MS (opening round: R64)
The top 8 seeds have byes into R32.
Other interesting ties are:
Yeoh Kay Bin v Lu Yi
K. Yogendran v Li Yu
Xia Xuanze v Andrew Smith (to see how Xia's current form is)

WS (opening round: R32)
Yao Jie (the 3/4th seed) has withdrawn leaving Fransisca Ratnasari a much easier opening tie with Rachel Van Cutsen (Ned).
Other interesting ties are:
Pi Hongyan 1* v Susan Hughes
Zhu Lin v Nicole Grether
Wong Mew Choo 5/8* v Adrianti Firdasari (match of the day)

MD (opening round: R32)
If the Koreans are sticking with the same partnerships for 2006, Lee Jae Jin will be partnering with Jung Tae Keuk. (Now when we say Jung/Lee, we mean this Jung, not Jung Jae Sung.) Anyway Jung/Lee had to qualify and will play fellow Koreans Yoo Yeon Seong/Kang Myeong Won (who?) in the first round. Jung Jae Sung is now partnered with Lee Yong Dae and are also in this event. Talk about confusion. Another Jung/Lee!! So, for short cuts, we have to name them like this:
JungJS/LeeYD
JungTK/LeeJJ
Other than that:
Gan Teik Chai/Abdul Latif 3/4* v Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo (match of the day)

WD (opening round: R32)
Another surprise, Zhang Dan/Zhao Tingting is now a partnership. The only other Chinese pair in the event is Du/Yu, so we are not sure about Zhang Yawen and Wei Yili, maybe they will be together.
No interesting matches this round, but the coming days will have some.

XD (opening round: R32)
Expect one or two upsets from:
Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting v Anggun/Tetty 5/8* (match of the day)
JRasmussen/Andersen v Shirley/Runesten-Petersen 3/4*
Lee Young Dae/Hwang Yu Mi v Koo/Wong 5/8*

Yes, Zhang Yawen is partnered with Wei Yili now. They are the runner-up in the World Cup 2005.

I thought Chinese player will give this tournament a skip ????

The top Chinese players are giving it a skip, not all Chinese players. Hence, the likes of Lin Dan, Cai/Fu, Zhang Ning and Xie Xingfang are missing.

Live scoring is up, and as of now, the XD matches are almost completed. Two MS matches are starting already.

The upset (if you can call it upset) so far:
Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting bt Anggun/Tetty 15-11, 5-15, 15-7

china appear to have discovered some good mixed men in zheng bo and xie zhongbo.. very impressed with their recent results..

altho by the same token the danes have discovered a couple of girls as well in helene and britta...

exciting times ahead in the mixed world.. think we could see a lot of close games in the last 16 of most of the tournaments this season..

England seem to be doing okay in this tournament.. both our younger mixed pairs made it through their qualifiers and have won their first round matches..

altho one of the pairs that didn't have to qualify have fallen at the first hurdle :(

everybody else seems to be doing okay...

andrew smith vs xia has the potential to be interesting.. the young lad has been on the circuit since he was 16.. will be nice to see him pick up some points, perhaps a game against xia..

England seems to have a lot of youngsters with good potential. Good for their future.

JR and Britta had a tight match against WC bronze medallists Shirley/Runesten-Petersen but finally lost 15-6 12-15 17-15!

Note that Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty have already been knocked out by the Koreans...

right now the17 yearl old Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark is on the way to the 2nd round... He is perhaps the coming man from Denmark. Normally europeans peak later because they start training seriously later than the asians... so if he makes it to the 2nd round this is a great achievement. He also reached 2nd round in Denmark Open this year, losing to Dicky Palayma.

Any more information about Jan Jorgensen? What's his style of play? Is he already training full time? ... did he finally win his match? :p
Always interested in knowing about the upcoming players... :)

aye.. england seem to have benefited greatly from the likes of simon archer and jo goode in the mid 90's and now nathan and gail but with plenty of support from tracey hallam for ws, anthony clark, rob blair, nat munt, donna kellog all performing within the top 10 in the world all performing well in all disciplines. this is great for the next generation to get practice against and learn from.

The only thing we seem to lack is MS players..

I can answer this one myself : yes he ended winning 9-15 15-11 15-6 against Niluka Karunaratne. Nice result! :)

I nevr played against him myself as im 2 years older... But ive seen him play. He plays typically like a young player, sometimes world class play next day lot of mistakes. I would say that he sometimes is a slow starter, but when hes ready he plays with great speed and a offensive style. His net play is very sharp and he has a cool and calm attitude on court. He has beaten some of the best young danes Jens Kristian Leth, Peter Mikkelsen who are around 22-23 and should be considered strong EBU players. Jens Kristian won a EBU the other day, so to beat them gives an indication about that he has a big talent.

I only saw him at the danish junior championship so a lot could have happened since. I dont think he at the time trains with Gade, Jonassen etc, but he will in a year I guess.. If he decides to give it a try and trains hard he has a chance, but lot can happen in that age. Lets hope he makes it to the top so there are a european after Jonassen and gade

Sure, beating Leth and Mikkelsen are great performances, though Leth relies mainly on his size (I find), Mikkelsen is a real fast attacking player.

And is he the super-gifted or the hard-worker type of player?

Anyway, it should be interesting to see how well he can perform in the future ......... and in the very NEAR future how well he can perform in the second round against Park Sung Hwan! ;) (tough match!)

With the 8 first seeds not playing in the first round ("funny" draw size BTW), we couldn't expect many upsets.

However, two of the 9/16 seeds are out :
Geoff Bellingham lost to Andrew Dabeka
Björn Joppien lost to John Moody (!!!!!)

Now WS playing...

yeah i was surprised to see bjorn lose..

was also surprised to see roman spitko lose too.. both are quite strong players in europe, altho kaspar from denmark is no slouch either so perhaps a tight 3 gamer was always on the cards here

toby honey put up a good fight against bobby milroy -taking the first game off him to 12, going down rather easier to 6

hmm.. bellinghams loss looks like some sort of injury - tight first game then lost to 1???

Yes, Zhang Yawen is partnered with Wei Yili now. They are the runner-up in the World Cup 2005.
Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen are also partners when they won the Junior World Championship (the same year Bao Chunlai and Zheng Bo/Yang San won theirs). Great to see them together once again.

mmm, he's not been thru the normal route to the england squad.. he travelled around, not sure where he was funded from, i'm fairly certain he didn't do his formative years in any of the england junior squads. Privately coached abroad, trained abroad, travlled to competitions by other means.

Unfortunately - plagued by back problems since he was 18/19.. i look forward to seeing him at the nationals this year to see what progress he's made..

interesting attitude tho.. especially when he doesn't think he can lose.. in fact - the rally point system wouldn't support him at all.. when he's winning comfortably he's quite happy to waste his serve doing clever stuff and trying things out, and simply take his opponents serve off them.. very very confident..

i hope he really fills all his potential

A Little updating scores:

Xia Xuan Ze won 2 sets against Andrew Smith : 15:10 15:4
This event and German Open probably his last chance to show LYB that he still can play. His likely to be opponent in R16 will be Hafiz. Exciting match!

Wong Mew Cho VS Firdasari : 4:11 11:2 11:6
And when we just a little happy when Firda got the Sea Games gold medal for women singles, she lost to WMC who she beaten in Sea Games. :(

Lee Jae Jin/Jung Te Kuk lost to Yoo Yeon Seong/Kong Mye Won : 11:15 11:15
Probably Lee had to pair again with his old partner.

Most of the seeded players move to second round.

Ya he is interesting... guess he can be very careless, whos not when they are leading? :p
But he is definatly better than Nicholas Kidd in my opinion!

Living in Aus have seen Andrew Smith play a fair bit recently as he is pretty much constantly (??) in NZ & on the oceania tour. He can be on and off but when he is on watch out. Played best I have seen him play in 3 years at the Aus Intl.. was on fire, beat Rony Agustinus in Semis in straight and went on to win the title pretty easily. Can be a very explosive player.

he looks sooooo thin - sort of LCW thin..
