BASEL: Shuttler Mohd Hafiz Hashim’s hopes of defending his title at the Commonwealth Games look bleak after he crashed out in the second round of the Swiss Open yesterday.

The third-seeded Hafiz went down 11-15, 13-15 to former world champion Xia Xuanze of China.

The defeat was least expected, especially after Hafiz’s superb 15-12, 15-0 win over Xuanze in the first round of the last year’s Malaysian Open.

With only five men’s players –singles and doubles –allowed to compete at the Melbourne Games in March, Hafiz’s poor showing here has certainly weakened his chances to make the trip Down Under.

It was also the end of the road for James Chua in the Swiss Open after he lost 7-15, 9-15 to Canadian Bobby Milroy.

Malaysian number one Lee Chong Wei, however, stayed on course for his first title of the year, easily clearing his second round.

Seeded number one, Chong Wei made short work of youngster Michael Christensen of Denmark, winning 15-7, 15-9 to set up a third round meeting with South Korean Park Sung-hwan.

Three other Malaysians – Wong Choong Hann, Yeoh Kay Bin, and Sairul Amar Ayob – also joined two-time Malaysian Open champion Chong Wei in the third round.

Choong Hann and Sairul will take on Danes Kasper Oedum and Niels Christian Kaldau respectively while Kay Bin will meet South Korean Lee Hyun-il.

In the men’s doubles, back-up shuttlers Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif were the only Malaysian pair to fall in the first round.

The third seeds went down 15-13, 15-17, 12-15 to China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xie Zhongbo.

Scratch pair Choong Hann-Choong Tan Fook did well to clear the opening round. They defeated England’s Ian Palethorpe-Kristian Roebuck 17-14, 15-5 to earn the right to meet top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen of Denmark for a place in the quarter-finals.
