REIGNING OLYMPIC and world champion Taufik Hidayat has lauded the staging of the first Philippine Open Badminton Championships, saying the event will further raise the level of play here and at the same time help develop local players of world-class caliber.
"From what I’ve seen, the physique of Filipinos is identical to most of the world champions whom I have played with. The only element needed for major success by Filipino players is more international competitions," said Hidayat.
The Indon ace, who became the first player to win both the Olympic and world singles crown, is expected to lead the foreign challenge that includes the likes of Nathan Robertson, Gail Emms, Lin Dan, Pi Hongyan, Mia Audina Tjiptawan in the upcoming Philippine Open slated March 1-5 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Hidayat, widely regarded as one of the best singles players in the sport, was actually scheduled to grace the launch of the 0,000 event last week, being its chief endorser, but the five-time Indonesia Open winner begged off at the last minute after sustaining an injury.
Still, he praised the holding of the championship, saying he’s raring to renew ties with the Filipinos and play before the local crowd after he saw action, along with the other world-caliber players in the MVP Cup last year.
"I am happy to play in the Philippines because it is one of my favorite places in Asia," said Hidayat. "The world of badminton is getting more and more competitive. The Philippines now needs to develop its own IBF Open event in order to produce world-class players."
Truly, the RP Open, sponsored by Bingo Bonanza, will serve as a four-star tournament, marking the first time that an IBF (International Badminton Federation) event is held in the Philippines, thus giving local players the chance to obtain world-ranking points.
Organized by IMG and backed by JVC, the event is expected to lure over 200 players from 25 countries since it will also serve as a tune-up for those competing in the China Masters, a six-star tournament slated the week after the RP Open.
For details, contact the PBA, Badminton Hall, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, P. Ocampo St,, Malate Manila c/o Joel Maborang at 0926-5973222 or send an e-mail to joebm_13@yahoo.com and aglipay@globequest.com.ph or log on to the event’s website on www.philippineopenbadminton.com.

kokcheng 01-17-2006, 02:27 AM I am sure Taufik will grace the Philippne Open baring any injuries. The atmosphere during last year Europe versus Asia (MVP) was just unbelievable.IBF surely have something to learn from the Philippines in promoting the game. The stars, the celebrities, the famous, the notables, the ordinary folks came and cheered for the likes of taufik, lin dan,mia audina, kkk, ccm.and the european stars. It's simply terrific that the first Philippine Open is a 4 star event. In due time it will attract all the best players to cme to the Philippines.Congrats to the Philippines Badminton Association for being so aggressive in your quest to be a major player in the world of badminton. You will not fail.

i remember postings about the first PO was very successful, the players really felt the excitement and cheering feedback from the fans
The Philipino crowd is definately more lifelier than other crowds that i've seen during the mvp cup however not during the SeaGames. The respond is kinda different then.
Well i don't know about this 2006 PO. I hope it wil be the same as MVP as long as the ticket price is cheap.
glencomienda111 01-17-2006, 10:33 AM well jkad65 already bought tickets, kinda cheaper now compared to the ones sold for the SEA games, well the crowd was great but when the philippine team didnt actually perform to the expectations of the filipinos, it kinda sucked the life out of them:crying: i really wasnt that dissappointed 'cuz i know were still in our infancy stage in badminton. i was cheering for all the great games, regardless of country. anyway its time to get our vip passes right ants:D:D

Great that world badminton will traverse to RP in March. Just hope that I may be able to visit Makati again. Dear Ants and Glen, how strong is your influence in obtaining another VIP pass? ;)
Darth Andrianus 01-22-2006, 01:38 PM Didn't Taufik win his first tournament in the Philippines? Well, if he really likes playing there as he claimed, he should certainly participate in this one and play his best. That's the least that he can do for the crowd and for Philippine badminton! Oh, and while he's at it, he might as well play in the China Masters and detroy LD again if possible.
harimau 01-23-2006, 10:07 AM But Good News ..... I heard the current MD World CHampion will be participating in the Phillipine Open....

Wait a minute, TC qualifying is 15-19 February, right? This means there should be enough time for the players to have a little bit of a break before going off to the Phillipines. And while they are at it, they should go to China Masters as well?

blueagle 02-19-2006, 08:28 AM PBSI has confirmed that Taufik is going to the China Master and would not come to Philipine citing safety issues :p
are you sure? what safety issues are you referring to? taufik is the official endorser of the philippine open. his name and face is in all the posters advertising the philippine open. i do hope he comes and play. btw, i heard minarti timur and trikus hariyanto will be playing in the philippine open. minarti has been staying in manila for quite sometime already. trikus, on the other hand, just arrived last friday.

That's so strange since he was here a few months ago to play in a tournament held in the Asuncion Badminton Center (ABC; a 5 minute drive from where I live). He also comes here once in awhile to play with the people of Bingo Bonanza and some of the former Philippine National Team members. :D
rajp25 02-19-2006, 09:51 PM according to this article from manila bulletin on feb 19, taufik still headlines the event:

ekimnat 02-23-2006, 05:56 AM check out the Philippine Open website, there are no players from China, Denmark, UK, or any of the big stars. MVP Cup was much better. won't buy tickets, will just watch it on TV.

Whether there are big stars or not, it is always better to watch badminton live than on TV... that's my opinion at least

depends on how close you are to the court
image last row of the stadium, barely see anything
actually i think it's better to watch it on TV,if it's just for the game
ekimnat 02-23-2006, 09:04 AM its just such a letdown that none of our favourite players will be competing in the Philippine Open

There are still players from ASEAN countries though :D
Not surprisingly, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Phillipines are the largest contingent.
It will be interesting to see whether the first or second team are being sent to compete by PBSI. My guess....it will probably be a mix.
Darth Andrianus 02-23-2006, 12:57 PM Are you kidding me? China and Denmark are not coming? Then everybody else will be getting easy 4* points. Taufik definitely should go! Philippines should give the guy and his wife free honeymoon accommodation at some posh hotel.
cooler 02-23-2006, 01:10 PM Malaysia to stamp class in RP Open badminton
MALAYSIA WILL parade a talent-laden roster that includes the world’s No. 2 in the men’s singles and the reigning SEA Games women’s doubles champions when the first Bingo Bonanza Philippine Open Badminton Championships presented by PLDT Business Solutions is staged March 1-5 at the PhilSports Arena.
With world No. 1 Lin Dan of China opting to skip next week’s blue-ribbon event to prepare for the tough China Masters, Lee Chong Wei will become the top ranked player in the 0,000 tournament although he will have to contend with the likes of reigning world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and a host of others for the top plum worth ,600 in the men’s singles.
Lee, a semifinalist in the World Championships, a 7-star tournament, last year, is coming off a big victory in last month’s Swiss Open a week after reaching the semis in the All England Open.
Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty will also return to the scene of their SEA Games triumph in the women’s doubles as the world No. 4 pair heads the cast in their own side of the event, a four-star tournament sanctioned by the IBF and sponsored by Bingo Bonanza, JVC, PLDT and Smart.
Malaysia is actually fielding in one of the largest contingents in the five-day tournament organized by IMG with 14 players in the men’s singles, five in the women’s singles, seven pairs in the men’s doubles, four teams in the women’s doubles and three in the mixed doubles.
Fifteen countries have so far enlisted in the event, including Finland, Austria, Vietnam, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, United States, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan with the hosts to be represented by the brother-sister tandem of Kennie and Kennevic Asunsion and Paola Obanana.
Meantime, tickets are available at all Ticketworld outlets and are packaged in the following categories: March 1-3 Category 1 (R200); Category 2 (R150); Category 3 (R100); Category 4 (R50); Gallery (R10); March 4-5 Category 1 (R500); Category 2 (R350); Category 3 (R250); Category 4 (R150); Gallery (R20).
For details call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or get online at: www.ticketworld.com.ph.
Games will start at 2 p.m.
Darth Andrianus 02-23-2006, 04:22 PM errr...if this article is true, then I take it taufik is indeed coming? This will be a good opportunity for LCW to win a tournament this year and add to his world ranking points. Surely at some point LD must be dethroned? He has been up there for too long.
Malaysia has the biggest contingent. 39 people.
kemana 02-28-2006, 06:30 AM PBSI has confirmed that Taufik is going to the China Master and would not come to Philipine citing safety issues :p
i heard he is not coming???
MikeJ 03-06-2006, 12:56 PM (in the small tournament I mentioned before; in Asuncion Badminton Center) It was amazing seeing Taufik Hidayat play doubles against Rudy Wijaya (Tony Gunawan's former doubles partner) and Minarti Timur (2000 Olympics Silver Medalist in Mixed Doubles). Taufik's partner was Albee Benitez (owner of Bingo Bonanza). Since the venue was small (I think the hall has 6 courts), you could here the boom Taufik's smash would generate (WOW!!!!), and compare it to the sound of Rudy Wijaya's and Minarti Timur's smashes.

sorry, no pictures. :D i wasn't able to bring a camera. :(
Well, the badminton boom officially started here sometime 2002, so I'm hoping that those small tournaments will be held more often.
Btw, Rudy Wijaya and Minarti Timur are based here in the Philippines. Minarti Timur coaches players in Asuncion Badminton Center ("ABC") and Rudy Wijaya coaches recreational players in Olympic Badminton Center (it's nor really an official center for the Olympics, it's just the name of the badminton hall)
