View Full Version : All England Quarterfinal (Day 3)
2cents 01-19-2006, 03:08 PM Lin Dan should win.
Lee CW vs Chen Hong
Chen Jin vs Peter Gade
are really neck and neck
Bao CL was supposed come out in the last quarter. Now with his withdrawal, Lee HI should win, but Sato may change the landscape of the mens single.

badMania 01-19-2006, 04:24 PM MEN'S SINGLES QUARTER-FINAL
Lin Dan vs Kenneth Jonassen
Lee Chong Wei vs Chen Hong
Chen Jin vs Peter Gade (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Lee Hyun Il vs Shoji Sato
-- except for the first and last match, the other 2 matches are touch and go. LCW is on form right now and he should be able to handle Chen Hong. Chen Jin is really maturing and it’s not easy for Peter to beat him. Remember than Chen prevailed once in the Denmark Open. Peter will definitely want his revenge.
MEN'S DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Lin Woon Fui vs Thomas Laybourn/Lars Paaske
Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif/Gan Teik Chay vs Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto
Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo vs Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen
-- Eriksen/Lundgaard Hansen and Luluk/Alvent should prevail. The other 2 matches should be tight.
WOMEN'S SINGLES QUARTER-FINAL
Zhang Ning vs Eriko Hirose
Pi Hongyan vs Cheng Shao-Chieh (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Mia Audina vs Wang Chen
Xu Huaiwen vs Xie Xingfang
-- another chance for Cheng Shao-Chieh to reach the semi-final of a major event. She is definitely a potential. The others are quite straight forward matches.
WOMEN’S DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Gail Emms/Donna Kellogg vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Aki Akao/Tomomi Matsuda vs Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung
-- pretty straight forward matches. But Ogura/Shiota might upset the top seed, given that Gao Ling has to play earlier in the mixed doubles (usually played first). That match is gonna be tough and long….
MIXED DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung vs Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager
Zhang Jun/Gao Ling vs Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thungthongkam (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen vs Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms
Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir
-- yet another QF clash between Zhang/Gao and Sudket/Saralee….a repeat of the WC. Can Sudket/Saralee prevail once more? Seems that Saralee is still bothered by her injury? The fast improving Xie/Zhang should trouble Robertson/Emms, but the home crowd should help the reigning champion to win…possibly in 3 sets. Nova/Butet must show that they are capable of winning the AE…and the first step begins with defeating Laybourn/Rytter-Juhl, who have beaten them in the semi-final last year.
Trance 01-19-2006, 05:26 PM Damn. BCL withdrew? I was really hoping he was gonna win. He's been really rising to the top over the last few months. Except of course his matches with LD.
retarded bunny 01-19-2006, 05:36 PM even though i am a chinese, i really hope peter gade would win one last big tournament before his retirement =\

weeeel..
agree in most places..
MS - would love to see KJ take lin dan down in a marathon 100minute 3 setter :) sorta like when he lost in the WC to Xia in that marathon game.. it's a bit different tho. hopefully he can wear Lin down a bit tho. That way the next round he has to face LCW when he knackered - Lin can prolly manage that one too but by the time he gets to Gade he'll be spent..
LCW vc CH - v close match - definitely a 3 setter - depends how much old man Hong wants it..
CJ vs PG - again depends how much PG wants it - but this man has a fire that burns.. he's shown a lot this year at how much hit fitness has improved and his experience is showing. as a bonus he should get a relatively easier match vs LHI or SS in the semi, altho LHI is in form and could be more dangerous that expected.
MD - personally i think it's wide open for the Danes. Luluk/Alven are young and have started slowly - the danes will punish them and are certainly the pair to beat in the draw now. TL&LP will push the malaysians hard. while they may have taken out Cai & Fu i suspect there is something not quite right there, perhaps injury or illness.. some people don't complain if they are ill and just get on with it.
WD - agree.. don't really take an interest - the English girls will fight hard, but i think Gail will save herself for the XD where she will meet ZHang again (must be fed up of the sight of each other :) )
WS - perhaps Mia can raise herself this time.. and Pi, Eriko Hirose can be trouble, but Zhang Ning is a truly dominant force in this category.
XD.. so.. my favourite category.. I think all the matches are going to be close, but you'd expect that - they're all the seeded partnerships.. However i think Nathan's decision to stop playing MD will be the deciding factor - all lot of the other players are in the MD/LD events and have
played more games than Nathan, i think only Zhang Jun and Nova Widianto are in the same enviable position.
So.. let the games commence :) here's hoping the XD is on in the evening so that all the girls and guys are knackered and so that Nathan and Gail can dominate and return to the no.1 spot they worked so hard to achieve before the WC. Also good luck to Jens/Mette - Lee/Lee can be eratic and haven't strung many results together recently perhaps Jens/Mette can turn them over this time :)

interesting point about specialization. i always wonder why INA doesn't let Lilyana play WD. she will be an awesome WD player. i can only guess that they probably think that even if she plays, there is little hope of breaking the Great Wall so it is better for her to concentrate on XD?
back to AE..
Lee/Lee vs. Eriksen/Schjodager - so difficult to predict. Lee/Lee can be lethal at times, but also can completely fall apart on others. Eriksen/Schjodager are stable most of the time, but never very outstanding. i give it to Lee/Lee for their #1 ranking.
Zhang/Gao vs. Prapakamol/ThungThongKam - oh boy, how Zhang/Gao would love to beat the Thai pair again to avenge their WC lost. but the Thai's are easy meat. Sudket "superman" Prapakamol will not let any shuttle go slow nor low, while Saralee just need to keep her composure and be more offensive at the net. the reason side of my brain tells me it is a 55/45 match to the Chinese, i think. but i have been rather fond of the Thai pair lately, so my heart bumped it back up to 49/51. so Saralee/Sudket it is...
XieZB/ZhangYW vs. Robertson/Emms - back a year ago, i would think that the Brits will butcher the Chinese easily here. but time has passed and the Chinese youngsters have gained much experience and confidence since. the largest hurdle will be for XieZB to remain calm and continue his offensive. ZhangYW will have a tough battle against the very fast Emms. but in the end, i still think this is 50/50 match and i give it to Robertson/Emms for the crowd support.
Laybourn/Juhl vs. Widianto/Natsir - a replay of last year's semi-final, how exciting. while our friend Thomas/Kamilla are runner-up last year, they are unlucky to be drawn against reigning World Champions. Lilyana i have totally faith in but Nova can be shaky at times. i give the match 60/40 to Widianto/Natsir.

Lol- of course they are... dumb 'ol me.. it's been a long day....
here's hoping that the mixed won't be on first- i'm sure it won't it wasn't last year or the year before.. they usually put it on after some men's doubles and mens singles..

if im not mistaken, tis is already the 2nd time they beat cai&fu. (china open & AE)
i've seen tis pair playin in Malaysia open, their attackin game is very solid.
eventually they lost to cai&fu, but its a vry close 3 setter fight....

terry 01-19-2006, 09:14 PM Hope LCW win over ChenHong:rolleyes:
Dave18 01-19-2006, 09:14 PM I think that Chen Hong should retire. After watching him over the last year. I think he is lazy until he starts losing points. When he's losing bad then he starts to be more aggressive. If he was always aggresive, I think he would be good. But he is a slow starter.

Lilyana Natsir (aka Butet as she is often called by her coach and fellow players) is indeed a very good and promising young player. It's almost unbelievable that she is only turning 21 this year and is already a World Champion. If you remember, she has played WD before....around 2 years ago before she was paired with Nova in XD. She played in Uber Cup 2004. However, it's pretty seldom you will see an Indonesian player competing in 2 disciplines (MD and XD or WD and XD). I guess playing the coach wants to prevent players from having to play too many games in 1 day (Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen played 3 games yesterday).
She deserves a better partner than Nova as I have mentioned so many times. Nova has the tendency to lose his concentration and play erraticly.

I love to watch quarter final matches too as you can see more new up-and- coming young stars and the games are more well-matched and not totally one-sided as in many earlier rounds. ;)
MS
1. Lin Dan should have no problem with KJ, unless the latter moves much faster.
2. Chen Hong, as reigning champion, will unlikely cede his crown to aspirant LCW, I'm afraid.
3. Can CJ extend his fine run against the consistent and much more experienced PG? Tough call, but Yannie may be sad with the final result. :(
4. Lee seems to have the upper hand over Shoji.
WS
1. A matter of how many points Eriko is able to squeeze from Zhang.
2. Pi should win on account of greater experience at the world stage.
3. I feel Mia will not disappoint her adopted country, Nederlands.
4. The much shorter Xu will have to double up against XXF and this is indeed a tall order.
MD
This is very hard to predict for you because so many of your countrymen are playing. Your heart has to rule your head, I'm afraid and I can't blame you! ;) It will be nice to see an upset.
1. Choong/Lee should prevail.
2. Being less experienced, Lin/Fairuz will likely be stopped by Laybourn/Passke
3. Similarly with Gan/Zakry by Luluk/Alven
4. Defending champs, Eriksen/Lundgaard are in no mood to discard their crown.
WD
Same as what you've predicted. The 3 Chinese pairs and the Koreans should have little or no problem.
XD
1. Not easy for the Koreans as Eriksen is very experienced. However, if E has to play the men doubles first, then the Danes will be steamrolled.
2. I think the Thais have a good fighting chance though the scoreline will be very close.
3. The English pair will be unstoppable in front of a partisan crowd.
4. I simply like Natsir's play and attitude and it will be almost impossible for the Danes to tear the Indons apart, especially if Widianto stick to consistency for the most part.

Yes, it is surprising at first to know that Lee Chong Wei is the MS player with the hardest smash!
This shows that smashing hard in badminton isn't a question of being very muscular and powerful, more a question of pace...

What is "Nasi Lemak" ? :o
Ben Beckman 01-20-2006, 04:22 AM i think chen hong will win.
about the lazy comment, i think chen hong has a very relaxed style and is very confident in his shots. over this last year he has developed a runner's game to his attacking game so he hasn't been beaten by players who get it all back as he can do it back to them, plus he has developed more shots. i watched the chine open semi and final and although he lost first set to gade easily, it wasn't a slow start as gade played amazing but in the end gade couldn't keep it going, and chen hong prevailed.
What is "Nasi Lemak" ? :o
Taneepak must have loved this well-known simple Malaysian/Singaporean food very much but I don't know whether it can be easily found in Hong Kong and just as tasty!
In Malay, Nasi means rice and lemak means 'fatty' or 'oily'.
The white oily fragrant rice normally comes with a small fried fish (and or otak, a fish paste packed in coconut leave and grilled), a fried egg or portions thereof, chicken drumstick or wing, cucumber, ikan bilis very tiny fried fish which is common as a tidbit mixed with fried peanuts to go well with a glass of beer and lots of specially prepared hot chilly paste to whet the appetite.
Traditionally served on banana leaves, nowadays they are served on plates with fork and spoon in most food outlets. Nasi Lemak with Chicken drumstick, plus other usual items as stated, costs about Singapore $2.50 at my nearby food centre. It is indeed very tasty but whether it will give you that extra to be able to deliver a fantastic smash is debatable! :D
seven 01-20-2006, 04:39 AM Arg, stop you're making me hungry !!! :D
Hehe, doesn't seem bad anyway, hope I'll get chance to taste that one day! ;)
Kamen 01-20-2006, 04:41 AM Actually, a meal of "Nasi Lemak" before badminton is a big no no. It's too rich and oily, it will slow you down. :D
serviceover 01-20-2006, 04:42 AM i think Chen Jin will take the mens singles. The line up for QTR look like some good badminton...
Matrix 01-20-2006, 04:45 AM Hi,
Nasi lemak is a set of Malay style coconut flavour rice with small fish, cucumber, two pieces of large fish and sometimes with fried chicken wings. It will have spicy chilli as side dish. ;) Those who cant take spicy food will not able to taste chilli then:p
Taneepak,
LCW dont take nasi lemak lah. He must had eaten alots of rendang to increase his muscles and power. Rendang means beef cooked with coconut plus chili and other sauce.:D
Matrix:)
What is "Nasi Lemak" ? :o
_muse 01-20-2006, 04:53 AM about the lazy comment, i think chen hong has a very relaxed style and is very confident in his shots.
I agree, Beckman. Chen Hong's game has changed slightly - instead of smashing to create opportunities, he now smashes for the winner, which saves energy. The laziness he displayed in his performance in the finals of the German Open against Chen Jin was due to his obvious lack of desire to win and Chen Jin's intensely aggressive play.
As for the winner of AE 06, I'd like it to be the winner between Peter Gade and Chen Jin, preferably PG. They both carry that intense mentality in their games.

jamesd20 01-20-2006, 06:09 AM MS:
Lin should beat KJ, but needs to be careful to keep it quick if he wants to reach the final, as KJ can be draining to play
CH should beat LCW, but may be tight, LCW definitely looks faster and stronger than last year when he played him in semi final, but CH is a master IMO so will win.
Chen/Gade difficult to say. Gade didn't have it easy against Ng Wei yesterday, but chen didn't either. Chen to take on past form however.
Sato vs LHI tough mattch but Lee should be able to control sato speed and take it.
MD:
Choong/Lee vs Jung/Lee should be a fantastic match, and difficult to decide winner the KOR pair are very good.
Lin/Tazari shoul dbeat Laybourn/paaske on last nights performance, they were sublime against Cai/Fu, we shall see if they have consistency.
Abdul/Gan vs Luluk/alven. MAL pair are very agressive, much more so than other MAL pairs, and I think this may count against them. It will be a good game as INA Pairs like to sit and defend and go for counter attack.
Guo/Xie Vs eriksen/MLH should be DEN pairs game to take, CHN pair a level below them, and may struggle against DEN variation as they are not a very mobile pair.
No comment on Womens or XD as havent even seen the scores.
hcpoirot 01-20-2006, 09:23 AM Prediction:
MEN'S SINGLES QUARTER-FINAL
Lin Dan vs Kenneth Jonassen
Lee Chong Wei vs Chen Hong (Although it will be tight match CH will win. He play really well so far.)
Chen Jin vs Peter Gade (MATCH OF THE ROUND) If CJ didn't feel exhausted cause he play back to back events,he will win. Also in tight match.
Lee Hyun Il vs Shoji Sato
CJ really got the toughest draw in Al England. Hafiz in first R, Boonsak in R16 and now Peter Gade. If he through SF, another strong player waiting.
MEN'S DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Lin Woon Fui vs Thomas Laybourn/Lars Paaske
Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif/Gan Teik Chay vs Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto
Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo vs Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen
If Thomas/Lars can't pass QF, maybe Lars had to think to play again with Jonas.
WOMEN'S SINGLES QUARTER-FINAL
Zhang Ning vs Eriko Hirose
Pi Hongyan vs Cheng Shao-Chieh (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Mia Audina vs Wang Chen
Xu Huaiwen vs Xie Xingfang
Lets see if Cheng Shao Chieh can step up closer to Chinese players level.
WOMEN’S DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota
Gail Emms/Donna Kellogg vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Aki Akao/Tomomi Matsuda vs Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung
Gao/Huang will win in 2 sets. I havent see them play in three sets lately except they meet their own teammates.
MIXED DOUBLES QUARTER-FINAL
Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung vs Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager
Zhang Jun/Gao Ling vs Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thungthongkam
Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen vs Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms(MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir
I say ZJ/GL will want to revenge their World Championship loss. Pretty much all the matches in XD will be tight.
hcpoirot 01-20-2006, 09:33 AM XD is also my fav category... :D
interesting point about specialization. i always wonder why INA doesn't let Lilyana play WD. she will be an awesome WD player. i can only guess that they probably think that even if she plays, there is little hope of breaking the Great Wall so it is better for her to concentrate on XD?
Again another mistake from PBSI. Playing two numbers will make you had good endurance. Indonesia is the only nation whose pairs only play in XD number.
Example: Gao Ling, Lee Hyo Jung, Gail Emms , Zhang Ya Wen etc also play WD.
Jens Eriksen, Xie Zhong Bo, Sudket, Thomas Laybourn etc also play MD.
If Nova/Lilyana only play XD and can dominating XD like Kim Dong Moon/Ra Kyung Min, its okay. But they can't. In XD, after KDM/RKM retired its an open field. Who play the best, and they can win.
Maybe if Lilyana air with Jo Novita in WD, they can close the gap with the China and even beat the Korean girls. Who knows?
**KZ** 01-20-2006, 09:42 AM i was going through yesterday's results...how can Lin Dan take 60 minutes to beat WCH with the score of 15-6, 15-5?
hcpoirot 01-20-2006, 09:45 AM For those of you who lived in Indonesia , don't forget to tune in to LaTivi at 00:00 midnight cause LaTivi will broadcast it live.
My only hope is they broadcast not only Indonesia 2 matches, but 5 matches in that court.
And I am really hoping Indo pairs can move to SF cause if they fail, I doubt LaTivi will show any live broadcast for tommorow SF and Final. :(
Better to logoff now and start preparing something to eat for the matches.

It must have been rather tight despite the score...
hcpoirot 01-20-2006, 09:48 AM i was going through yesterday's results...how can Lin Dan take 60 minutes to beat WCH with the score of 15-6, 15-5?
KZ, sometimes even the scores which had a big gap like that doesn't mean the match will be quick. It mean WCH had already gave his best fight against LD.
The same can be said for WD yesterday between Yang/Zhang and Indonesia girls: 15-8 15-9 in almost 1 hour.
ye333 01-20-2006, 09:55 AM In German open final, Chen Hong really did some good shots, among them a fabulous backhand crosscourt drop.
He still needs to understand more this more relaxed style and learn how to quickly understand his opponents (PG is really good at this). If he can manage to do this, he will have a good chance to reach the top of the world in the following two years. '

They simply can't do that!!! Canceling a broadcast that they've advertised for soooo long "only" because none of the Indon pairs get into the semifinals. Aiyo.. Let's pray pray pray Lativi still has some conscience for all the audience..

hcpoirot 01-20-2006, 12:54 PM Nathan/Gail VS Xie ZB /Zhang YW
In first set the Chinese pair play really bad. They didn’t had any team work, tons of unforced errors so the British pair lead 14-1 when the Chinese started to tune in their usual play. British won 15-4
In second set the Chinese play really well and the British started to play real bad. I counted 4-5 times Gail and Nathan fail to smash a high shuttlecock in front of their net. An easy smash. No wonder the British lost 8-15.
Third set who attack first will win. Specially for the Chinese pair, they should not think their next WD and MD match. Just concentrate on this match first.

AGREE !!! Another vote from me to do away with the 21-point sytem!!!
oh my goodness. that was an AWESOME match. Robertson/Emms picked up their composure again in the 2nd half of the 3rd game. it was very close. my heart nearly popped out.
sad to see my fav pair lost, however. but kudos to the British. Robertson dominated the service return. Xie was so scared of him, he either served into the net or ended up lifting. basically the Chinese was reduced to one service because of this.
Zhang needs to work on her deception at the net. Emms is very good at jumping onto a net shot. and Zhang needs to fake her a few times to stop her from doing that.
the 3rd game was just awesome. the tension was very high as everybody can sense. the pace and variation in pace, placement was right on.
madbad 01-20-2006, 01:43 PM ZN 4-0 Eriko

ye333 01-20-2006, 01:45 PM Just watched a few moments of Lin Dan -Jonassen, 2nd game. Is Jonassen 40 years old or something? He is unbelievably slow. In reaction, in footwork, in everything.
