Hi,

When I watch other people do a Backhand Serve, the head of their racket and their contact point is BELOW their waist.

I was starting to wonder the serves I've been doing for the past 5 months have been illegal. I serve a Backhand Serve where the head of my racket is aligned with my waist. I make contact point right at the level of my waist.

Is this legal?

Hmm? Of course the racket head and contact point should be below waist. Also they should be below the wrist of which hand holds the racket. No matter forehand or backhand serve.

Rules:
9.1.5 the whole shuttle shall be below the server’s waist at the instant of being hit by the server’s racket;

Answer: unless it's all below your waist, no :P

your serve is legal but you need to put the shuttle in the center of the racket.

yea u probably confused between waist and hips, the place where most ppl(except nerds) wear their pants are at the hips so thts not the judging line, waist would roughly be the slimmest part of ur body, unless ur absolutely obess(is tht how u spell it?)so ur serve is fine infact i think mine is higher i gotta watch it nxt time

Well, I think that's a matter of preference. Ideally, yes, center is better but I know a few people that serve off center for a variety of reason, quite effectively. :p

That looks like a nylon bird in the picture!! If so, use a real feather! =)

Yup, make sure your below the waste, otherwise you give your serve over.

yah it has been discussed before, waist area in serving generally translate to the part from above your hip to the lowest point of your back rib cage.

As long as you don't "shift up", you are OK with the picture looks.

Lately I have encountered many people who think they have perfect serves, but they actually are not because they shifted the hitting point up when they hit the shuttle.

Someone told me long time ago that the backhand serve is not legal? Does this hold true some point in time long ago?

Nope.

The backhand serve has always been legal.

You used to see only forehand serves, because the backhand serve had not then been "invented". But there has never been a law against it.

Only the "Sidek" serve was banned and is illegal. But that was in the 80´s

It was used for aprox 1 season before IBF banned it.
