View Full Version : Thomas & Uber Cup - Asian qualifying phase
hcyong 02-03-2006, 03:42 AM For both Thomas and Uber Cups, China (defending champs) and Japan (hosts) have already qualified. Four more Asian nations will join them in the finals.
The draw for the qualifying event will be held on Feb 7.
The qualifying event itself will be held in India on Feb 15 to 19.
Competing nations (for both Cups unless stated)
1. Chinese Taipei
2. Hong Kong
3. India
4. Indonesia
5. Iran
6. Korea
7. Malaysia
8. Nepal
9. Pakistan
10.Singapore
11.Sri Lanka (only in Thomas Cup)
12.Thailand
13.Vietnam (only in Thomas Cup)
For Thomas Cup, it's a matter of formality for Indonesia, Malaysia and Korea. Who will join them? It would be close between Hong Kong and Thailand while India could play spoiler. My prediction is Thailand.
It is much harder to predict for Uber Cup. Korea is a sure-win, but choosing the top 3 out of Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand is no easy task. I cannot even predict.

thanks hcyong, you are so fast with the info!!!
thomas cup, easy ride for malaysia, but not for indonesia, although on paper can beat thailand and vietnam, but will be tough i think.
what about ride to semifinal or final? which group winner against which runner up?
hcyong 02-07-2006, 02:13 AM Thomas Cup
Group A
Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal
Group B
Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam
Group C
Hong Kong, India, Singapore
Group D
Korea, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka
Anyone knows the format of the tournament? It will probably be group matches, the winners of each group (they qualify for Finals) will play in the semifinals.
Easy for Malaysia and Korea.
Tough for Thailand. In Group C, they would have been favourites. But they will try to make life difficult for Indonesia. However, with Taufik, Sony and doubles pairs around, ... Vietnam is interesting here. I wouldn't write them off against Thailand.
Group C has no overwhelming favourites and all the teams here should be extremely glad they don't have to face any giants. Singapore will be banking on Ronald (if he is unavailable, then it will be almost impossible) and Kendrick to get two points, and hope for another point elsewhere. India has a balanced team with some of their singles players having the ability to spring some surprises. Hong Kong is the slight favourites in this group with Ng Wei, Agus and Yohan, and doubles pairs that are tipped to beat those from Singapore and India.

The good thing for Indonesia is that Thailand is not very strong in the singles department, the major weakness of the Indons. Except for Boonsak who may upset Taufik, I cannot see anyone else who can get another point.
I don't know the format of the tournament. But I guess it will just be group winners playing in semifinals, ie. no quarterfinals.

if winner A will face winner B in the semi, then very likely will be INA vs MAS in the semi, i am expecting them to meet in the final instead
hcyong 02-07-2006, 02:32 AM Uber Cup
Group Y
Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Iran
Group Z
Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, India, Pakistan
I don't know the format, so I am guessing top two in each group (they will qualify for Finals) will play in crossover semifinals.
Group Y looks like a group of death, with Iran squashed to the bottom. Korea should top the table, so it will be a three-way fight for a spot in the Uber Cup Finals. There are no obvious favourites. It all depends on the form of the day. Take for instance Malaysia v Chinese Taipei. Wong MC v Cheng SC and Chin/Wong v Chien/Cheng both look like 50-50. Same goes for Indonesia as well. The winner among the three will really deserve the spot.
For Group Z, obviously we can discount India and Pakistan, with all due respect. So, it is a three-way fight for two Uber Cup Finals spots. All teams have pretty strong first strings, but down the ranks, it becomes blurry.
Interesting. The Uber Cup interests me much more than Thomas Cup.
hcyong 02-07-2006, 02:38 AM if winner A will face winner B in the semi, then very likely will be INA vs MAS in the semi, i am expecting them to meet in the final instead
The semifinals are not that important. The main target (qualifying for Thomas Cup Finals) has already been attained. The teams may field weakened squads, or not take it seriously.
eskey 02-07-2006, 02:43 AM Hong Kong is the slight favourites in this group with Ng Wei, Agus and Yohan, and doubles pairs that are tipped to beat those from Singapore and India.
Are Agus and Yohan already Hongkong Citizen? i thought they are only PR.
Thomas/Uber cup must be citizen right?

My oh my.......both groups look tough...esp Group Y. Which 2 teams to qualify from Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei is an intriguing question which we will find out in just 2 weeks.
Here's my analysis:
Korea is weak in singles and all the other teams stand a chance of stealing pts from the second and (especially) third singles. The only pt they can rely on is Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung. They really have to work hard to beat Indonesia and Malaysia.
Korea lineup (according to latest rankings):
Seo Yoon Hee (WR 13)
Hwang Hye Hoon (26)
Jang Soo Young (39)
Lee Yun Hwa (42)
Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung (3)
Ha Jeung Eun/Kim Min Jung (67)
Ha Jeung Eun/Hwang Yu Mi (72)
Malaysia have a strong first single in Wong Meow Choo and two stable doubles pairs in Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui and Ooi Sock Ai/Moi Hing Yao. Their chances of qualifying are pretty high.
Malaysia lineup:
Wong Meow Choo (12)
Sutheswari Mundukasan (38)
Julia Wong (84)
Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui (4)
Ooi Sock Ai/Moi Hing Yau (22)
Fong Chew Yen/See Pui Ling (40)
Comparing to the other 2 teams, Indonesia appears to have the weakest singles. However, since Firda is most likely going to play third singles (due to her ranking), she should get a pt against Malaysia and Chinese Taipei. Similarly, any pairing that Indonesia puts up with Lilyana Natsir will trouble Malaysia's and Chinese Taipei's second pair. If Indonesia are to win against these 2 rivals, both Firda and the second doubles have to win! They have to slog for the other pt (likely from Jo Novita/Greysia Polii or the second singles). It's unlikely that Nana can beat WMC or Cheng Shao-Chieh. Jo/Greysia have beaten both Wong/Chin and Chien/Cheng. But again, matches between these 3 pairs are going to be tough! With some luck, I hope Indonesia can edge Malaysia for the second spot.
Indonesia lineup:
Fransisca Ratnasari (38)
Maria Kristin Yulianti (43)
Adrianti Firdasari (47)
Wiwis Meiliyanna (117)
Jo Novita/Greysia Polii (18)
Lita Nurlita/Nathalia Poluakan (38)
any combination with Lilyana Natsir
Relying only on Cheng Shao-Chieh and Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing to get the pts, I don't think Chinese Taipei will qualify. This is especially if Chien has to play in both singles and doubles.
Chinese Taipei lineup:
Cheng Shao-Chieh (11)
Huang Chia-Hsin (84)
Chien Yu-Chin might play singles (as in Chinese Taipei Open last year)
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing (9)
Chou Chia-Chi/Ku Pei-Ting (37)
For the second group, I think Thailand will take top spot with their strong doubles and relatively superior third singles. Hong Kong and Singapore will fight it out for the second spot. Ranking-wise, Hong Kong is better, but I think Singapore will qualify.
Hong Kong lineup:
Wang Chen (3)
Yip Pui Yin (25)
Wong Sin Yee (66)
Koon Wai Chee Louisa/Li Wing Mui (20)
Yip Pui Yin/Ng Ka Shun (126)
Singapore lineup:
Li Li
Xing Aiying (28)
Frances Liu Fan (113)
Shinta Mulya Sari (114)
Jiang Yanmei/Li Yujia (11)
Frances Liu Fan/Shinta Mulya Sari (50)
Thailand lineup:
Salakjit Ponsana (21)
Meemek Monthila (32)
Aparna Popat (50)
Saralee Thungthongkam/Sathinee Chankrachangwong (5)
Duang-Anong Arunkesorn/Kulchala Worawitchitchaikul (21)
zia.ufrida 02-07-2006, 07:15 PM Hi Badmania... I always waiting for your analysis in any badminton draws. Thanks for this nice analysis. How many team will qualify for uber in each group (Y n Z)? Are they 3 or 2 teams?

not yet... it will be dicided tomorrow, (thursday, 9 feb 2006):)
hcpoirot 02-08-2006, 11:00 AM From Asia zone qualification for Uber Cup , the drawing as follow:
Group 1 : Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Iran
Group 2: Hongkong, Thailand, Singapore, India , Pakistan.
Only the winner and runner up of each group will get a ticket to Uber Cup final in Japan, May 2006.
What a rotten luck! Indonesia girls drawn into hell group. The only easy match is against Iran. And we had to compete with 3 other teams for only 2 tickets.
We still had chance to win if PBSI coaches use the perfect strategy. Against Korea, Indonesia had to split their doubles. Cause I doubt Jo/Gresia can win against Lee/Lee and our second doubles can win against Korean second doubles.
Instead of losing 2-0 from doubles, better if they put Jo and her old partner Lita into second doubles where they had better chances to win against Korean second doubles. With 1-1 score, Indonesia can gain 2 points from singles where the Korean WS did not perform well lately. Indonesia VS Korea singles are 50:50 in all three singles.
Meeting with Malaysia, Indonesia have to use the usual formation cause Jo/Gresia VS Malay fisrt WD is 50:50. And the second doubles probably Indonesia had a better chance 52:48 to win.
For Taiwan, Indonesia probably already lost one point from first WS. So we had to gain 2 points from doubles. The difficult part is I guess Cheng Siao Cieh will also play second doubles after play first WS. Thus, it will hard to predict if our usual second WD pair can win against them cause usually a good single player also not a bad double player too. And it probably only 50:50 for the first double.
It will be a dilemma here. If we split the doubles, we probably will had 1-1 from the doubles. And it will be bad cause we 80% lost in the first single. And Taiwan second single also not bad at all.
But at the end, despite from skill, mental strength is the most important key in team event. Whose players had the most tough mental believing she or they can win this for their country, they will win. Unfortunately, from this 4 teams, Indonesia players mostly didn’t had great mental while playing for team events. I can’t blame them, cause PBSI only send them 5-7 events a year and most of them are small tournaments.
PBSI even send our strongest women singles into a satellite tournament (Grade A or B) where usually we send junior or new players to compete there.
My prediction: They can’t get past this qualification. But it is only a prediction. Maybe our girls had improve in their mental strength and believe in themselves that they can win the ticket if they wanted it badly enough.
Group A : Korea and Taiwan will get the tickets. Who will be winner or runner up, I can’t say. Depend on how good Cheng SC skills in doubles. Not to mention Chien YC who play first doubles also not a bad single player. She managed to reach R16 or QF of All England Open this year if I am not wrong.
Group B: Hong Kong and Thailand. Why I pick Hong Kong? Cause Wang Chen already guarantee 2 points from first single and second doubles. They only had to find another one point from another 3 matches.
hcpoirot 02-08-2006, 11:04 AM The good thing for Indonesia is that Thailand is not very strong in the singles department, the major weakness of the Indons. Except for Boonsak who may upset Taufik, I cannot see anyone else who can get another point.

Yes. For Thomas qualification for Asia zone: the winner of each group will get 1 ticket to final round in Japan.
Indonesia also not in an easy round here had to meet Thailand in one group. Although we in paper we will win against Thailand, but it will be a hard fought matches. Not to mention that Sigit got injured. And the official didn't know if he can back in form for the qualification round.
nugroho 02-09-2006, 06:35 AM do you know the line up for thomas cup?
it's confirmed that sigit will not fly to jaipur tomorrow morning. :crying:
peace 02-10-2006, 07:55 AM Sigit will not come to Jaipur...it's a pity for Indonesia, but I think Indonesia will still qualify for the TC 2006. Thailand can make the matches harder for Indonesia but Indonesia is still better, and Vietnam is the weakest among three in group.
For UC, it's unpredictable. Korea might be the strongest team, but I am not pretty sure, since they are also weaker now. Basically only Lee/Lee is the best one....so for UC it's harder to predict who will go to Japan. I hope Indonesia still can make it.
kemana 02-10-2006, 09:12 PM it's confirmed that sigit will not fly to jaipur tomorrow morning. :crying:

Malaysianfan 02-11-2006, 06:40 PM Shuttler Wan Wah out of Jaipur trip
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles specialist Lee Wan Wah will not be on the plane to India today when the Malaysian badminton team leave for the Thomas Cup Asian Zone qualifiers.
Wan Wah suffered a recurring knee injury and was left out of the team. With Wan Wah out, Malaysia will only be represented by five doubles players – Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui and Choong Tan Fook, Wan Wah’s partner.
Yesterday, national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said that Wan Wah’s main aim was to get ready for the Thomas Cup Finals, scheduled to be played in Japan from April 28-May 7.
“The decision to leave Wan Wah out was made after a meeting yesterday (on Friday). The meeting was attended by Sean Sturgess (physical trainer from the National Sports Institute), medical staff, mental trainer and chief coach (Yap Kim Hock),” said Rexy.
“He still has a problem with his knee. It still hurts when he bends. If this problem is not fixed, he may have to forget about playing badminton. We (the coaches and support staff) have decided that it is better to reduce the number of tournaments for him to play in.
“For now, we want him to be ready and stronger for the Thomas Cup Finals.”
Based on the recent performances of Wan Wah-Tan Fook in the All-England, Rexy felt that the services of the seniors were still needed.
“We can still use their services. Besides, their presence is good for the back-up players in the team. They can become good role models and instil confidence to the others in the team,” said Rexy.
At the All-England, Tan Fook-Wan Wah upset world number one Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto of Indonesia en route to the final.
They however, went down tamely to Denmark’s Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen in the final.
Rexy said that there would not be any replacement for Wan Wah for the Thomas Cup qualifiers.
“While we expect Wan Wah to take a longer break from competition, Tan Fook will not be deprived of competition,” added Rexy.
“Tan Fook will play with Wong Choong Hann (singles player) in some of the matches during the qualifiers.
“This scratch pair will also play in the Commonwealth Games (in Melbourne from March 15-26). It will be good practice for them.” Malaysia should not face any problems qualifying for the Thomas Cup Finals. In the qualifiers, top seeds Malaysia have been drawn in Group A with minnows Iran, Pakistan and Nepal. The group champions automatically qualify for the Finals.
IMHO, it will be a good experience and chance for the juniors.

badMania 02-12-2006, 10:32 PM The Asian qualifying campaign will begin on Wednesday. No news yet of the full schedule.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Uber Cup Team has announced its squad:
First Single: Wong Mew Choo
Second Single: Julia Wong
Third Single: Norsyahliza Baharum or Anita Raj Kaur
First Double: Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui
Second Double: Ooi Sock Ai/Mooi Hing Yau or Fong Chew Yen/See Phui Leng
The likely scenario against Indonesia:
First Single: Wong Mew Choo vs Fransisca Ratnasari (55-45)
- Wong should secure the first point for Team Malaysia unless Nana put up her best performance.
First Double: Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui vs Jo Novita/Greysia Polli (50-50)
- hard to predict since both pairs are equally matched...it has to depend on the luck and form of the day. If Indonesia can get this point, it will be make difficult for Malaysia to win the overall match.
Second Single: Julia Wong vs Maria Kristin Yulianti (40-60)
- Its imperative that Maria Kristin win this battle and on paper, she should win.
Second Double: any pair vs Lilyana Natsir/Lita Nurlita (45-55)
- With Lilyana Natsir playing the second double, Indonesia has a slight advantage to win this all-important point.
Third Single: any player vs Adrianti Firdasari (30-70)
- The only point that Indonesia holds absolute advantage. If the pts are split at 2-2, Firda has the mental burden to win the match and possibly qualification spot.
Prediction: Indonesia to win 3-2.

I thought Firda is the 2nd single and Maria Kristin's the 3rd. R they allowed to make a formation that isn't based on the world rankings?
badMania 02-13-2006, 08:32 AM I thought Firda is the 2nd single and Maria Kristin's the 3rd. R they allowed to make a formation that isn't based on the world rankings?
According to the World Ranking as of 9th Feb 2006, Fransisca Ratnasari (WR 38) is the first single, Maria Kristin (WR 43) is 2nd single and Adrianti Firdasari (WR 47) is the 3rd single.
badMania 02-13-2006, 08:52 AM Hmm....the schedule looks favorable to the Indonesian girls.
Wednesday morning, they will entertain Iran and they are expected to win 5-0. Note that every point counts towards final qualification. At night, they will play Korea. Korea is expected to win but I hope Firda and the second double could at least steal 2 points from them. Meanwhile, the Malaysian girls are in for an early battle against Chinese Taipei in the morning. Later at night, the Chinese Taipei will play against Iran.
On Thursday, Malaysia will play 2 matches. Iran in the morning, and Indonesia at night. The night match will be very important to both camps and a fresher Indonesia team has a slight advantage. Chinese Taipei faces the Korea in another the morning match.
On Friday, all teams will play their last match. Malaysia will face Korea while Indonesia will face Chinese Taipei.

With the lineup Chinese Taipei put up today, Indonesia has a 60-40 chance of winning. Maria Kristin and Firda should beat the second and third singles. Meanwhile, Lita/Butet also should beat the second doubles. If Jo/Greysia can win against Chien/Cheng (50-50 chance), it will make life easier. The only pt that Chinese Taipei can almost secure is from Cheng Shao Chieh.
Similarly, the second, third singles, and second doubles will be relied upon to contribute when playing against Malaysia.

Is Taufik just lack of practice after his wedding or this Tien Minh Nguyen really that good?

Nguyen is a very common surname in Vietnam, just like Lee or Kim in Korea.

i suspect maybe lack of practice. i am more worried when he play Boonsak tomorrow, some more he already said he doesn't like the new scoring, so..who knows it could be that factor as well....let see tomorrow:)

I will be really annoyed if this is really the case. This is irrelevant, he just has to accept that the scoring system is as such and he just has to live with it and play. I agree that he is probably out of practice with all his wedding preparation. Either way I hope he plays his very best against Boonsak, the guy is a tricky one. In the meantime, I am quite excited for the new pairing of Lita/Butet. I hope they do well. Novita/Polii can also do pretty well. They are a good pair, the only problem is whenever they play in major tournaments, they always end up meeting one of the chinese pairs in the earlier rounds. I think the Uber cup will certainly give them an opportunity to get themselves noticed by the badminton world.
