View Full Version : Commonwealth Games - Melbourne - HELP!

Hi guys,
I have great news! IBF has just hired me to be their eyes and ears for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (since I live in NZ). I will be writing daily reports on the Commonwealth Games for IBF to be published by them and so I'll have access to the badminton event and the players, yay!
What I really need help is with accomodation. I will be there from March 15th to 26th and will need somewhere to stay while I'm covering the games. I'm wondering if anyone in Melbourne would be kind enough to offer me some sort of accomodation (I'm more than happy to sleep on the couch!) or otherwise, suggest some really reasonably cheap accomodation around Melbourne?
I'm looking forward to this event, not only will it be my first big badminton report coverage, but also first visit to Australia! So I hope that some good Aussies will be kind enough to extend their hospitality to their cousin Kiwi! :)

Wow, you're so lucky :) Maybe you should have asked them to provide accommodation (closer to the players, the stadium... )
Better sharpen those camera skills too :D
Congratualations Adelina! I'll be at the Games from March 18 to 25. It was FEND who recommended me to stay at the budget hostel (dorm with beds) at Urban Central Backpackers. You may wish to find out more from their website but I'm quite happy with what they provide and had booked with them just yesterday. Hope to meet up with you there. :)

Great!Looking forward to your report and hopefully some interviews with the players. The least IBF could do will be to provide accomodation and food for you. But,knowing how passionate BF members are,I think you did not ask for anything.

Hi Adelina
Congrats on your hiring. From reading your previous posts, I am sure you'll do more than a good job in your position. My question is: If IBF "hired" you, are they not covering your accommodation/expenses, etc.? Is that not normally commensurate with a "hiring"? Just curious. :o
Anyway I hope you make out OK. Looking forward to your reports.
FEND.

Go urban central backpackers. At least that's where Loh and I will be staying and that it's easier to keep track of where everyone is :D

Thanks Loh and FEND for the recommendation. Can I assume the backpacker is very near to where the stadium is? Not even sure how transportation system works in Melbourne. I mean is it like Singapore where everywhere is accessible by metro-line / subway (in which case, distance isn't an issue)?
To answer the other questions posted so far about IBF and their payment for accomodation and food - I'm not getting paid for these but I'm getting paid quite well for the articles that I'll be writing which in a way makes up for the other expenses (to a point). I guess I'm not looking at making much money out of this assignment but at least it'll give me a chance to be at the Commonwealth Games and also see Melbourne, so can't complain lah! :p
As for my photo skills noluckjim, you guys are spared from having your visions impaired from trying to decipher from the blurred images who the players are! We're using professional photographers for the assignment.
I'll confirm my accomodation and it will be good to meet up with all of you that's going to be there too! Perhaps we can even squeeze in a friendly game here or there?

If I recall correctly, guessing players from less than amiable pictures is a favourite past time around here... :p
Irrespective of that, make sure to enjoy yourself :)

It's walking distance, hence I chose it. Give it a call asap as places fill up.

I think tze yang, who also hails from NZ but is currently working in Melbourne for about 3 months now, may be able to arrange some games for BFers. I'm looking forward to that, especially when FEND promises to bring extra rackets! Anybody else wishing to join us, please PM tse yang. :)
Hi Adelina,
Congratulations on this fantastic opportunity.
May I go on to make two requests:
1) Please ensure that your coverage is more extensive on Aus/NZ teams (or any other Oceania individuals) as I think we will need it most.
2) Hope to meet you too as I will be one of the (younger/st) umpires there (but don't interview me if I get into controversial matters...hehe :o )

Hi Maz
Nice to know that you'll be umpiring. Hope you've got sufficient practice on the 21 points. The cameras will be on you if you boo booed unless you want to be in the news! :p Hope to meet up with you too.

hi adelina, i dnt think transport would be a matter to anyone watching the games because they are providing free public transport on the day u have a pass to one of the events which i guess would be everyday for u, and in the metro area most train stations are within walking distance to key places so dw bout transport that would be my tips

Hey guys,
Good to hear Tze Yang is arranging some games for us, I'll be sure to bring my badminton gear then. Wow, just looked at that Urban Backpackers site, they're charging AUS$35 per night's stay during the C Games..crazy! I'm going to be there for almost 10 days, that's a lot of money! Trying to find cheaper accomodation at the moment..perhaps see if I can stay with the NZ team! :P
Maz, as for the reports on the oceania team, I am not sure if I'm able to focus too much on them more than obvious attention giving to the host nation simply because the coverage is for international badminton. Having said that, if they're to cause an upset, I'll be sure to write more about them! :) Also, looking forward to meeting you. Make sure you wear a big name tag or at least put your pics here so I know what you look like so I can go around and say hi!
Also, good to know transportation won't be an issue during the games. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Hi guys!
I've booked at the Victoria Hotel - Melbourne. While the name sounds flash, the "hotel" probably would not be given that I've booked a 15 female dorm type accomodation! Hehehe, the life of a struggling journalist! :)
Anyway, here's the contact details. I'll be there from 15th March onwards. Can we arrange for us to somehow meet somewhere? Let me know...

No prob man! I understand beers are cheap down under, or is it wine? Certainly cheaper than in Singapore where the tax is pretty high! :crying: Btw, FEND, are you of legal age for beers or wines? ;)

Yes I am :D. And I have to bring ID to get my uniform and pass so yea. :D
Are you guys planning to drink Australian beer or just Tiger beer? hehehehe :D
Anyway, the Victoria Hotel sounds like it has a pub within (or next to) its premises. So can we aim to catch up there informally as a BC group?

Wow... so many people visiting melbourne :)
Supposed best beers (from some friends I know, I don't drink *much*:P) are Cooper's (not too sure which one, there are a few) and Kilkenny.
Have fun (I'm not too sure where I'd be :( )

Actually in my most humble honest opinion, NZ has better beer and wine, ok,ok, so I'm a bit biased! :D
Anywhere you guys pick I'm sure would be great, as after all, for a change, don't think it's location, location, location, but good company, great friends and lots of badminton convos! So really looking forward to seeing you all soon. Just make sure to arrange a time and place to meet soon so we all know where to go closer to the CG!

Hi all - first time here, and first post.
Coopers Inn is about a block and a half away from the Victoria Hotel, and is probably the best and cleanest pub around that area. Oh - if you hadn't guessed, I'm from Melbourne, and I'm also new to comp badminton too. I'm currently playing D grade at Altona on wed nights. I'd also be up for meeting ppl from here too. (as long as you don't mind an older newbie around....)

Welcome onboard Twodogs! I'll be coming to the Games from Mar 18 - 25 and will be staying at UCB where FEND will be staying too. Understand UCB is within walking distance from the badminton venue. I'll be watching badminton for 3 days (4 sessions) and hope to meet up with some BF'ers, both from Melbourne and elsewhere. Tze Yang is trying to arrange a baddy game but in case he can't make it, can you help?
Looking forward to meeting you. :)

I should be able to help out if needed :) Remember, I'm waaaay down in D grade and only play my 4th match this week!
I'll bring my rackets. (But I guess I'll have to see how much time I'll have in between umpiring to travel outside of the venue)
The closest venue would be MSAC but the Badminton Hall will be closed for the Commonwealth Games.
From the Badminton Venue, it would be easier to go to Alotna than Kilsyth. Travelling time to Altona is approximately 20 mins while it would be around 60 mins for Kilsyth.
Therefore Twodogs might have to book some courts at Altona.
I am keen to catch up with some BF'ers. If any of you guys are game enough to get into my 'sardine can', I would be able to provide transportation for a few kakis (members).

I think Altona would be best - I've also got a car (for want of a better word...) that can fit a couple of people in. Are people thinking of any particular day? I think mon - fri evenings are already taken up at Altona with pennant comps, sat pm is usually ok, and I think mon-fri day time is also ok. I'll check tomorrow night if someone gives me a date & time.

Twodogs (Are your dogs twins as well?), you and Kim are godsend helmsmen. For the present I can think of Adelina, Maz, FEND, Tze yang and myself who may need transport to Altona. There may be more by next week and I hope they can make their presence felt here before you finalize our BC Melbourne Fun Game itinerary.
To assist Twodogs in his court booking, may I suggest we let him know of our own dates for the Games (whether as offcial or spectator) or which date and time we are free to join in the fun game?
I will be at the MCG badminton venue on the following dates and times:
Mar 19 (Sun 11 am and 7 pm),
Mar 20 (Sat 2 pm) and
Mar 22 (Wed 9 am).
I tried unsuccessfully to get tickets for Mar 20 (7 pm Team Gold) and Mar 24 & 25 (Individual QF & SF). :crying:
So I should be free on other days. :)
As for skills, Twodogs and I will be at the 'mercy' of our much younger BF'ers, especially FEND and Tze yang, who are bursting with energy and power. And Adelina is a few grades above us, having played competitively in NZL. Don't know about umpire Maz and Kim though. But I'm sure we can learn from them. So not to worry, Twodogs, they're all freindly people! :p
PS: FEND, yes extra rackets needed. ;)
I'm prepared to meet up anytime when I'm not umpiring or scheduled to be at the hall. Again, you can spot me as possibly the youngest female asian umpires there. :D
I hope you BC-ers will wear a BC banner or shirt so that I can spot you in the crowd too!
As for my level, I've played at national level in Australia, but I have very dodgy knees for a 23 year old (doesn't anyone else?)!

Hey guys,
What's all this "veteran only" game?! Since I'm not as strong as you guys but perhaps a teeny weeny bit younger, do I qualify as a 'veteran' as well? :D
I'm quite keen to play and will be bringing my racquets and shoes etc! I'm not sure as to when I can play since I'm suppose to be at the Badminton event covering the games. I got access to the games from March 16th to 26th! I only need to cover the games until they finish and I think they finish quite early each day so perhaps playing in the evening would be good for me!
Definitely, keen to catch up! So we got BC shirts etc as well?! :) Hope to see you guys soon!

Hehe...only a handful of people know me as Maz outside BC.
The competition organisers haven't given us a schedule, so we'll probably only find out on arrival.
By the way, a word of warning...are you all sure Altona is open during the Games? I heard it was the practise centre for all the athletes?
Worse comes to worst, we can just bus it to MDBA (Kilsyth). :D

I'll be in Melbourne from the 15th onwards and would be available to meet up with you guys anytime in the evening then.
PS: FEND, yes extra rackets needed. ;)

Do u still need the tickets for the S/F & Fianls on 25 & 26 ?
My friend in Sydney said, he can probably get me 2 pass or 2
comp tickets for the 25 & 26 matches.
I don`t think the Badminton event is at MCG. Should be at the
Melbourne Exhibition Centre. If I am right.

It's held at the Melbourne Exhibition Center. I'm pretty sure. Either that or I've been assigned to the wrong sport.
I am sure Loh meant MCG = Melbourne Commonwealth Games and not Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Yes, that was what I meant for MCG. Yes I also know that badminton is held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. I will have a great time exploring Melbourne in 8 days but my Singapore baddy friends assured me that I won't get lost.
Btw kong-19, are you related to my good friend, Chan Kong of Brisbane? He should be at the MCG to watch and play badminton with us. ;)

Hey there guys!
Tze Yang, I don't mind going wherever is convenient for us to go in order to have some games. My only 2 main concerns are:
1. I don't have transportation but won't mind catching trams to get to the playing venue.
2. As I'm doing the IBF coverage report on the events, and I see each day the event starts from 9am to 11pm except for semis and finals day! Geez! I'm not sure what my schedule will be like until I'm actually there. I might be able to sneak out for a few hours here and there I presume...but I'm definitely keen to play so long as I can get away during the times you guys arrange for playing.
Loh - I think you'll find the term "off load" some tickets is a kiwi/aussie slang for "keen to sell" some tickets. So it's not free - The minimum I think you'll find you'll have to pay what the guy paid for those tickets. Nothing in this world is free my friend! :p
I think I might be in trouble! As I'm not sure what the hostel I'm staying will be like, I only booked my accomodation from 15th to the 17th, which means I still need to look for somewhere to stay from the 18th to the 26th. So I hope I'll find something when I'm actually there or I'll be sleeping in the badminton stadium itself! :p

From the newspapers here, tickets START at $15 (probably plus a booking fee, which would explain the discrepancy) and go up to $65. The article didn't say which games they were for though.

Ants, I'm surprised that you are not leaving with the Msian Team. They need you as their mascot! Not to worry, the Individual MS and MD are almost guaranteed. As for the Mixed Team, no other country except perhaps England can really give Msia a good fight for gold.
Adelina, actually my Brisbane friend, kong-19, was offered complimentary tickets but he was a bit late and now I have to pay for them! :crying: Anyway, this senior gentleman will be joining us at Melbourne but he is assured of accommodation as he is staying with a friend. Why don't you take up FEND's suggestion to stay at UCB, only a 5-min walk to MEC.

I'm arriving only on the 18th, Sat morning and will watch the Singapore v Canada match at 7 pm. I'm preparing to fly off tomorrow (Fri) evening. Cooler, maybe we should have a wager. I pick Singapore to win! ;)
The following day, Sun, will see me stationed almost for the entire day in MEC for both the AM & PM Team matches. I think I will put on our white "BC T-shirt" for easy identification. :) Hope at least some of our BC Forum members will do likewise but I'm not sure if any of them have or seen one before!
Similarly on Mon for the Team Bronze and Gold Medals. This will be an exciting day and I'm looking forward to find out whether Malaysia is able to beat England by a convincing margin. Or will there be dark horses?
I intend to 'free' myself on Tue 21st to soak in the sights and enjoy the Arts Festival. Hope it will be breezy but sunny.
But on Wed morning, it will be back to normal at the MEC. I want to see for myself as many Commonwealth players as possible in their various colours, shapes and sizes during the Individual Singles and Doubles Elimination Round events. I think it will be a sight to behold and I hope they will don the most trendy and outrageous badminton attire. :D
Another two 'rest days' for me on Thur (23rd) and Fri (24th) to walk the streets of Melbourne or to play some social games with you and the rest of the 'gang' if possible. Maybe Kim (the organizer) can take note and I hope many of the others, especially hard-working officials Adelina, Maz and FEND, Tze yang and other BC members can make it. I have two of my regular local Sunday group badminton buddies, a couple, who have decided to join me the last minute and they will be around from 22nd to 26th. They love to play with us too.
And to culminate my short MCG visit, my Brisbane BC friend, kong-19, have managed to obtain the tickets for us to enjoy the Individual SF and Finals on Sat 25th and Sun 26th respectively.
Luckily for me the Finals are held in the morning and I hope to catch the probable "All-Malaysian MS Final" between Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choong Hann before I rush off for the airport to take-off at 4 pm for home.
There goes my 8 1/2 days sojourn in Melbourne. Till we meet again, adieu or in typical Australian, Goodbye MAIT! :p

Commonwealth Games: Singapore pair win badminton mixed doubles game
MELBOURNE : Commonwealth Games badminton giants Malaysia and Singapore got their quest for gold medals off to a flying start on Thursday with a series of comfortable victories.
Singapore's Aaron Tan and Frances Fan Liu had the distinction of being the first athletes in action at the Games which were officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II at a glittering ceremony Wednesday evening.
Playing in the mixed team event, they overpowered the South African pair of Lance James and Claire Edwards 2-0 in the opening match in just 24 minutes.
"It was a tough game, it's always tough against Singapore. We need to learn from it," said Edwards.
Defending women's singles champion Li Li of Singapore, world ranked 17, was also on court, and easily brushed off the challenge of South Africa's Kerry-Lee Harrington in a singles match in the mixed team event.
Top seed Malaysia, which won nine badminton medals at the last Games in Manchester, is grouped with Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland and Fiji in the preliminary mixed team rounds.
Singapore plays Canada, Mauritius, South Africa and Jersey while defending champions England are pitted with India.
Each of the four groups play in a round-robin event over three days with the top two nations from each group going into the quarter finals.
Malaysia had an equally impressive start Thursday with the pairing of Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui demolishing minnows Fiji 2-0 in barely 15 minutes.
Women's world No.12 Wong Mew Choo of Malaysia needed less than 20 minutes to send Karyn Whiteside of Fiji packing in their showdown.
There were also wins in the morning session for New Zealand.
England, Australia and Canada are in action later Thursday.
The singles and doubles competitions are played next week. - AFP/ch

Hi all,
Since Loh & Co will be available for social games on 23rd and 24th, we shall have the BF'ers gathering on either of those days depending on the numbers that could participate. I am proposing that we start at 8.00pm to accommodate those working BF'ers, especially Twodog. After the game, we will be having supper. The venue will probably be at MDBA Kilsyth but I will try to find a venue closer to Melbourne.
Please let me know if you are able to join us and the day you would prefer, 23rd or 24th.
For those that do not have transport, I could probably pack another 7 into my 'sardine can' (priority would be given to our overseas and interstate friends).
Currently, the participant are …
Kim
Loh

Hi guys,
Maz and I just looked at the 23rd, very bad time for us as that's the last of the preliminary rounds in the individual events which would no doubt end at some time like 11pm or something so no go. 24th is a bit better for both Maz and I as that's the quarterfinals and semi finals date and most likely everything will finish around 6:30 that day. Better still is the 25th (Friday) where it will be the Bronze medalists determination day and the play doesn't start until 4:30pm so we can play and meet anytime before hand. So let us know what you guys want to do, if it's the 23rd, most likely Maz and I can't come but we can make it if it's on the 24th or 25th.

Book it Kim, I'm sure most people will be able to make it. I know Maz, FEND, Loh and I are definitely will be able to make it (provided we have transport to this place).

Where would this be? I'm interested.
Adelina, Maz, FEND and Loh, all of you are staying at Urban Central?
I should be able to pick all of you up in my car.
Edit: Should have read the thread fully :)
I live on South Melbourne area, so I can easily drop by to Victoria Hotel as well.

Hi there Hagane,
Yeah, Fend, Loh and I are staying at Urban Central but Maz is staying at somewhere else but can easily come to Urban Central. It would be good if you can pick us up. So Kim, just waiting for your confirmation all is go and I'll tell the others.

Hagane,
I'm at the Stamford Plaza on Little Collins Street. As Adelina says, her, FEND, Loh, and myself will be able to make it if you can give us all a lift :)
I probably won't be checking the forum again for the rest of the week, so if you can, please contact Adelina or FEND to confirm things. TKS!

I'd also love to play if you can get it at 12-2:30. I could also go in and pick people up too. I probably won't be able to get onto the forum tomorrow, so could adelina/fend/maz please txt me the details and where/when you need to be picked up?
Guys,
I have booked a court for Saturday from 12.00 - 2.00pm. If more people turned up, I could have more courts. The stadium is at 52 Henderson Road, Keysborough, melways: P89 B6.

Hi All,
Just a quick note to say thank you to all efforts made to meet up. I enjoyed every moment of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, except for yesterday (Sunday) :crying: , where I went home after the Mixed Doubles final, as I was fighting off a very high temperature and a flu that's just hit me all of a sudden :(
Back in Sydney now.
Apologies to tze yang, we didn't manage to catch up with you, but I did ask for you when I went to Kilsyth with Lenny for one of your Sunday training sessions...but you weren't there
Maz
Yes, indeed we missed the company of Twodogs and Tze yang, particularly the former, as we had hoped he would turn up at our second session on Saturday 25th from 12 - 2 pm, at Southern Star Badminton Center at Keysborough, a converted warehouse with 4 rubber floor courts, owned and run by ex-Indonesian, Irvan Lay, who also sparred with us.
Adelina, Maz, FEND, kong-19, Hagane, Kim and I much enjoyed our session there. We had a very close match, with each side taking a game based on the new 21-point scoring system. Kim partnered Maz and Adelina had to cover me! ;)
Hagane was rather handy in giving us a lift back to Urban Central after the fun games so that we could even take a shower before we rushed off to MEC (Melbourne Exhibition Centre) in time for the semi finals which commenced at around 4 pm. He also fetched our two ladies, Maz and Adelina, to Southern Star in his trusty car at about 11 in the morning. FEND and I started off an hour earlier to take the 40-min train ride to Glen Waverley Station to meet up with Kim and Kong.
As our game was near lunch hour, Kim suggested we take an early meal of delcious Vietnamese beef noodle soup at Spring Vale at about 11 am.
Two days earlier, on Thursday 23rd, Kim brought us to the more modern Springster, which has dark wooden floors with more courts and facilities than Southern Star. The five of us, Kim, Kong, FEND, BadFever and I played from 8-10 pm, followed by supper of Chinese noodles and fried rice. Both Adelina and Maz were on duty at MEC.
It was late into the night before we departed from the restaurant, which is located in an area mainly populated by Asians, particularly Malaysian Chinese and Indians. Kim gave an interesting account of the history and social fabric of this area as we enjoyed our meal. We then took a ride in Kim's car to savour the lights and sights of Westgate and the Docklands. But poor FEND tried hard to keep his eyes open with little avail! He was not used to late nights and had to officiate the next morning. BadFever drove home on his own.
In place of Twodogs and Tze yang, we were lucky to be joined by BadFever and Hagane. So altogether, there were eight BFers representing Melbourne (3), Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, New Zealand and Singapore. With a relatively smaller group, that meant more games and more muscle aches! :crying:
I trust Maz has fully recovered by now. :)
Already, some of us are thinking of making it together again at Beijing Olympics 2008! How many of you care to join us. Make plans and save up for the occasion! See you in Beijing?
Here are some pics of the group:

I am so p'd off that I couldn't get there in the end. My youngest son didn't turn up till just after 12, and by the time I could've got there, I would've had to turn round and come back.
On a good note though, it looks like I have a new girlfriend :) so I'm glad I didn't cancel my 4pm date that day!
It was really great to meet Fend, Adelina & Maz - I wish I could've met with the rest of you though.
Looks like Fun Loh. 2008 Olympic?... hmmm that a good idea.
Pic 1 - At the Yarra
(L-R) Adelina (NZL), Maz (Sydney), FEND (Perth) and Loh (Singapore)
This is a tourist attraction with modern developments, mainly shopping and restaurants, along this part of the Yarra River. The MEC (Melbourne Exhibition Centre) where the badminton, boxing and weightlifting events were held, is located just across the road.
At the very start of this tourist stretch situates the famous and extensive Crown establishment housing mainly entertainment, restaurant and shopping facilities. The Crown Casino is located inside and the food courts are very popular. :p
In the background, across the Yarra, is the busy Commercial Business District.
Pic 2 - Close-Up View of Pic 1
This pic was taken by an elderly lady who mouthed us a smattering of Malay. The four of us have never met before until this MCG. FEND (Edmund) met both Adelina and Maz (Marianne) earlier as all three were involved as 'spotter' (identify nice-looking chicks and alert when the GAME is about to be OVER), IBF journalist and umpire respectively. Earlier, I joined the three of them at the Crown Food Court where they were having a bite.
Pic 3 - At Springster Badminton Center
(L-R) kong-19 (Brisbane), Kim (Melbourne), FEND, Loh & BadFever (Melbourne)
Quite a modern regular sports setup with facilities for shower, restaurant and refreshments. The courts have dark brown wooden flooring that make the place look dimmer. But unlike many other courts which have overhead lights, here the flourescent lights are located along the aisles in between the courts. This is Kim's regular badminton haunt, although of late he hasn't been playing much, it seems. Just like myself and Maz, Kim's knees are not as strong as they used to be! :(
Pic 4 - Close-up View of Pic 3
(L-R) BadFever, Kim, kong-19, FEND & Loh
With five players occupying one court, at least one of us can take turns to relax. However, fair-looking BadFever took more than his share to recover as he had not been playing for about a year. But when he returned to the court, he was very deadly with his smash. Obviously his early training in Malaysia before his family migrated to Melbourne when he was still in his teens, must have done him a lot of good. ;)
Pic 5 - Southern Star Badminton Centre
Well-known for its "Olympic carpet" flooring, the 4 courts with other limited facilites, have been well utilized by famous players and officials from the Indonesian foreign service. Converted from a warehouse, the dark red brickwall keeps the shuttle in sight although the ceiling is a bit low for singles play.
Pic 6 - BC Melbourne 7 Group Photo
(L-R) Adelina, Loh, kong-19, FEND, Kim, Hagane (Elton from Melbourne) & Maz
Absent: BadFever (work commitment), Twodogs (had a lovely date elsewhere) and tze yang (missing in action). :D
Pic 7 - Ladies in Action
Our two ladies can be more than a match for our guys. Both are accomplished players and the leggy Adelina can certainly move about and cover the court easily. Maz possesses a rather deceptive backhand flick that changes the flight of the bird quite unexpectedly.
Pic 8 - Satisfaction
All seemed rather satisfied with the noon workout and were ready to leave Southern Star for another venue - the MEC, where the individual Bronze Medal events were scheduled from 4 pm onwards. Unfortunately, Hagane (seen on the extreme right) would not be joining us as he had a work assignment to complete.
Pic 9 - Happy Are We!
(L-R) Kim (ex-KL boy and the tallest among us), Hagane (Elton who is the stongest and heaviest at about 90kg is ex-Indonesian. Actually has reduced from over 100 kg cause mom and dad agreed to play badminton with him), Maz (Marianne whose parents hailed from Singapore and maybe be related to me? :) ), Adelina (has to be ex-Malaysian with all those skilful moves and strokes!) and me (rooted to Singapore for life :crying: ).
Pic 10 & 11 - Crown Food Court
In the evening, after the completion of the individual Bronze Medal events, kong-19 suggested this venue where his favourite Duck Noodles in soup was available. He should know better as he frequented this place after his successful forays in the Crown casino nearby. Kong was in generous mood and decided to part with some of his winnings to give us a treat. As such, the duck noodles tasted even better coupled with generous servings of duck meat and pork! Maz and Adelina, who both ate 'char kway teow', just could not resist the immense satisfaction shown on our faces and decided to share a bowl. They never regretted.
The sad part was that this was like a farewell dinner for most of us as we went our separate ways thereafter and just dreaming when we'll be able to meet again.
Beijing Olympics 2008 is waiting for us! Can we turn our dreams into reality? ;)

You misheard me :P
Whilst I would have liked my parents to join me, they couldn't for health reasons. During the past year, I managed to coax a couple of people to play for an extra session (mostly singles) :)
Whilst that doesn't translate to myself having skills like Adelina and Maz, I have fun nonetheless (and lose weight! :P)
It was a pleasure meeting everyone. Unfortunately, I can't set anything in concrete for Beijing 2008. I'm hoping that I would be able to, but there are too many things currently set in my timeline :/

Just want to say thanks all for the meet-up! It was really cool. I'm sorry if I wasn't always in the cheerful of moods...it was stressful writing 11 articles in 11 days! ...But still, no regrets! :) Great fun!
When I came back, I slept 10 hours straight...soooo tired!
