MALAYSIA secured their Thomas Cup Finals berth when they thrashed minnows Iran 5-0 in the Asia Zone qualifying rounds in Jaipur, India, yesterday.
The win enabled them to top Group A to earn one of the four qualifying spots. Malaysia are likely to meet Indonesia in the semi-final today, a tie which is purely academic.
Malaysia once again rested Lee Chong Wei from the singles and Hafiz Hashim gave the expected lead with a 21-11, 21-12 win over Golamreza Bhageri.
Wong Choong Hann took the second singles with a 21-16, 21-11 win over Ali Shahhoseini while Kuan Beng Hong defeated Omid Karami 21-17, 21-11 in the third singles.
In the first doubles, Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat defeated Golamreza-Ali 21-5, 21-13 while Chong Wei, partnering Choong Tan Fook for the second time in the tournament, beat Nikzad Shiri-Arash Mohammadian 21-7, 21-7 to make it 5-0.
In a Uber Cup Group A match on Thursday, Malaysia played brilliantly to beat Indonesia 3-2 but the result may not be enough to earn them a place in the final round.
