WOMEN’s singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo will be out to keep her clean record intact in Commonwealth Games mixed team competition as Malaysia bid to win the gold medal in the event for the first time.

The mixed team event begins tomorrow at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

In the 2002 Manchester Games, Mew Choo won all her matches, including beating Julia Mann in the quarter-final tie against eventual champions England.

But her efforts were all in vain as Choong Tan Fook-Chan Chong Ming crashed to an unexpected defeat in the men’s doubles match and Malaysia lost the tie 2-3.

Malaysia’s hopes to win the gold medal in Melbourne will very much depend on Mew Choo’s ability to deliver a point in her match.

“I am very determined to help Malaysia win the mixed team gold medal and I will be going all out to win a point in every match,” said Mew Choo.

In the mixed team event, Malaysia have been tipped to play against England in the final.

Malaysia are the top seeds in Group A and will take on Fiji in their opening tie tomorrow. Their other opponents are Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland. England are in Group D with India, Seychelles and Trinidad and Tobago.

“If we meet England, I will play against Tracey Hallam. In the previous meeting at the Hong Kong Open, I beat her in rubber games,” said Mew Choo.

Besides Mew Choo, the other women players in the mixed team event are Julia Wong, Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty.

The men in the team are Lee Chong Wei, Chong Ming, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Fook.

If Mew Choo wins her match against England, there is a chance of Malaysia wrapping it up in the first three matches. Chong Wei and Chong Ming-Kien Keat are expected to win their matches.

Mmm. Your aussie coach Claus really knows how to make decisions all right. Putting pressure on kate Wilson and Kellie Lucas by playing kate in the mixed doubles in the first match and kellie the women singles in the 3rd game giving added pressure to both of them by playing them in the Womens doubles again. Fantastic. I've never seen such strategy.
