View Full Version : Does brands really make a huge difference?
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 01:37 AM Hi Guys,
I have been using yonex clones all the while, and haven really played on yonex racquets other than my old carbonex 8sp, the kind with frame and shaft joint together(do we call it t-joint?)
I'm thinking of getting a yonex mp28 or mp99 after reading thru all the wonderful reviews given by forumers, but the question is are yonex racquets really good? or the others like apacs and proace are as good as yonex?
I'd love to try out yonex for a change, but they are pretty costly...so I'd really need some advices.
TIA :D
Pball 03-16-2006, 01:52 AM Branded vs clones ... big difference
branded vs brandes ...less difference, more of personal preferences.
regards
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 01:58 AM well, most brands copy the technology from yonex so can we call all of them clones. not many came up with their own technology.
Linus 03-16-2006, 02:12 AM Personally I owned more than dozen different rackets, but of it only 2 Yonex (Ti-10 and Iso Tour 800 SP). Not that I donot like Yonex, but as you said they are expensive. On the other hand, I also like to try out many other brands (I have SOTX, Kason, Proace, Victor, Viva, Wilson, Winex and the much talked about E-1000), when saving on 1 Yonex high-end racket can buy me 2 of other brands!!! ;)
My own experience is that Yonex or other brands, they do not make me a better or worse player. Their attributes do affect my play a little (such as speed of swinging) but it has nothing to do with the brand but rather the characteristic of thar racket itself. So IMHO - if you can afford a Yonex go ahead to buy it, if you donot mind owning a less well-known brand, they are probably just as fine too.
I noted elsewhere, you played in the CCK Saturday morning group? I joined that group twice in January when I was back from HKG.
Cheers
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 02:22 AM Yup, I played with the cck sat morning group a few times. Lee said you'd be joining, I was looking forward to playing with you but I didnt see u turning up. :(
hehe
Sometimes I cant really tell if a racquet suits me, everytime I visit a shop selling badminton racquets, I pick up a few clone racquets and try. But I always feel that they have a hollow feeling(like the one i am having) But when I hold yonex they give me a solid feeling. maybe i'm thinking too much.
Linus 03-16-2006, 03:01 AM Wow, that is quite abstract!;)
The only time I have a "hollow feeling" is after I purchased a high-end Yonex racket, and then my wallet felt really "hollow"!:p
Re CCK, I did turn up whenever I signed up via the forum. But there is once the 2 courts are on both side of the hall, probably we ended up on different court and did not see/meet each other at all. No worry, I will see when I can join again.
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 03:09 AM haha I dont know how to describe that feeling, it just feels strange. But when i hold the racquet that will make my wallet feel hollow, it seems that its packed with power. ;)

Maybe clones are lighter in weight, but they're also lighter on the pocket! :D
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 03:24 AM Hi Loh, I'm Loh too.:D
btw i've seen some threads on mp99 and then i saw some sp versions.
are there 2 variations of mp99 and whats the difference of sp and non sp?
i tried to use the search function, but i get too many irrelevant hits.:(
ok, i get it...SP is singapore version. :D
pandee720 03-16-2006, 04:04 AM i think it all depends on the clone you use... i guess some clones are better than other clones... but most of the time, the branded ones are usually the best. i've had some friends who prefer clones though... really weird... maybe they like it cuz it's more flexible...
Javalina 03-16-2006, 11:25 AM I think the difference is personal. I have owned Victor and Yonex and played other people's Mmoa and Genji. I found very little difference, however, I still prefer Yonex racquets because I can "feel the shuttle more" when I played. One of my friend like the Vitor so much he bought it from me and use as the main racquet even though he has a Yonex NS7000. I think the difference between brands is minimum but personal preference is the major contributor.
LazyBuddy 03-16-2006, 12:16 PM As long as the manufacture is reputable, I think whether its product (be it a yonex clone or completely independent series) is better than Yonex is down to personal preference. The reason Yonex occupies most of the market is due to it's rather successful marketing strategy, as well as it offers more selections than most of other brands.
lightsmash 03-16-2006, 07:39 PM Hey guys,
thanks for all the inputs, i've decided to get a mp99...but i need to save up first. :D
