One more winner to the list is S. Pasturel (Jersey). I umpired her (the last match of the afternoon)...her opponent from Uganda retired due to an injury, poor thing, she could barely hit the shuttle properly. It was basically serve; hit out (or into the net)

She can probably make it to the QF. But after that the QF and SF are held on the same day. It may be a step too high for her. But I wish her best.

Dreamzz 03-21-2006, 04:54 AM yup, i think mew choo deserves to keep her unbeaten run going due to her heroics yesterday.
and since the men's events are likely to be won by the malaysians (well, i'd put it at 60-70%), i'm going to be supporting the indians!

We'll see tomorrow. I admit Hendra v John Moody is a close call, but I think Aaron is just too inexperienced against someone like Aamir.

If luck is on India's side, they could well have 3 quarter-finalist or none at all by tomorrow. 2 players will face Singaporean players and the match could go either way. I personally have the same prediction with regards to these matches: Li Li will win while Nehwal will continue her impressive form in the Commonwealth Games. She is indeed a very good prospect for Team India. With a good coach and sparring partner, she will be a top 10-20 players in time to come.

Wong MC to play Xing tomorrow. Xing could possibly stop Wong MC (especially if her injury bothers her). She has more guts than Li Li, more like Wong MC herself.

Actually, Elizabeth Cann represents Jersey, not England. The only upset I can see is Xing beating Wong, injury or not.
abedeng 03-23-2006, 02:43 AM Nehwal must have lost due to experience, when Xing changed tactics, Nehwal cannot respond. Classic problem of newbies.
The same thing happened to Susi Susanti when she was still a teenager playing in Stadium Negara in '88. She was leading Han Aiping one set and at matchpoint in the second (10-5). Yet she managed to lose the set and the match.

That's because in the Commonwealth Games, you will find they really subdivide into the smallest division. So, you can find Jersey, Isle of Man etc. By itself, Jersey is way to small.

What? Archer is 31 weeks pregnant?
This explains her loss in the WD as well.

WD
Chin/Wong (Mas) v Murgunde/Nehwal (Ind) - not much doubt
Emms/Kellogg (Eng) v Jiang/Li (Sin) - expect a fight
Li YJ, Emms and Wong PT have 4 doubles matches to play today.
Wong CH has 2 singles and 2 doubles matches today!!!
Quite a few others have 2 or 3 matches today, and this is in the quarterfinal and semifinal stages, where the level is higher.
Saina Nehwal is still alive, but I think the bronze in the mixed team is all she will take home because the other three WD semifinalists are (supposedly) superior.
hcyong 03-23-2006, 10:06 PM If my predictions come true then the finalists are either Malaysians or English. There is half a chance that the men's events will be all-Malaysian.

Shirley/Runesten Petersen are not World Championship semifinalists for nothing, you know. The only reason they are not that visible is because they compete in very few tournaments.

Easier than I thought. I think I tip her for another win against Hallam in the final. She would have a one-day rest in between to soothe her back.

What a relief! But he will be up to play MD semi-final in 2 hours time. Wonder whether his "overplaying" situation will affect his performance. Of course, if there are all-Malaysian affairs for MS & MD finals on tomorrow, then it won't be matter for Malaysian supporters.

The finals will be the day after tomorrow. For Malaysians, I don't see any problems for Chan/Koo, Lee CW and Chin/Wong to advance to the finals. So, the exciting match will be Choong/Wong against Blair/Clark.
Netasia 03-24-2006, 01:43 AM who is LCW's gf? WMC? seem like the alphabet W & C is a popular character in Malaysia badminton team. Wong CH, also W & C...

SeraphTT 03-24-2006, 02:01 AM Ash Brehaut and Travis Denney won their QF.
This is awesome for australian badminton though the possibility of a bronze medal won't mean much compared to the bloody race walking or lawn bowls.

hcyong 03-24-2006, 02:25 AM 4 individual gold for Malaysia? It's a possibility. But 3 gold would be a surer bet.
hcyong 03-24-2006, 02:37 AM Blair/Clark has the advantage over Choong/Wong because Wong CH has already played 2 singles matches and a doubles match. But Choong TF is a solid player and is able to cause the English lots of trouble.
(I shudder to think what will happen if Wong/Ooi made it to the XD quarterfinals.)
hcyong 03-24-2006, 02:38 AM Hallam not exactly having an easy time with Cann. She is a game up 21-17.

hcyong 03-24-2006, 03:15 AM Jiang/Li are not a bad pair, but Chin/Wong have the upperhand. Emms/Kellogg would have been more dangerous. We shall see on Sunday.

hcyong 03-24-2006, 03:25 AM Chan/Koo won easily.
Now for the crunch match: Clark/Blair v Choong/Wong.
Malaysia has already confirmed one gold medal. Can Choong/Wong confirm another one? Half a chance. Keeping my fingers crossed.
wl2172 03-24-2006, 03:32 AM I hope Wong/CTF wins, but Wong could be tired from his previous matches. It is up to CTF to work his magic at the front court.
I think at the moment, Malaysia already have presence in 4/5 finals, with the MS being all Malaysian affair :) .

Very respectable opponents to Wong/Chin, they've been able to match the best SEA pairs from Thailand and Indonesia as well. Even got the upperhand against the Thais in Uber Cup qualifiers.

Well, the sad thing for England is that he is the best MS player there. Anyway, we shouldn't laugh at him just because he is not in the same league.
I know we (the Malaysians) are slightly pissed off because he ignored Malaysia's strength in the mixed team, but I think we have thrown enough bad comments about him already.
Dreamzz 03-24-2006, 03:49 AM haha, actually, a small part of me wants CTF/WCH to lose, because otherwise they won't show the badminton finals on the BBC. I don't have digital TV you see. But only a very small part ....

wl2172 03-24-2006, 03:54 AM Hmmm, a little unfair to comment on Aamir Ghaffar on his performance. He did exceed expectations as he is only seeded 7th here.
Also, don't forget he was up against one of the world's very top elite player. Lee CW is head and shoulders above the field here (maybe apart from WCH, but Wong is getting old and playing too many matches), and he hasn't even been pushed passed 4th gear yet as far as I can tell. Anup Sridhar did try to challenge Lee CW for a while, but Lee just upped the tempo by a bit and Anup cracked. If anyone watched the All England semi final between Lee Cw and Lin Dan, I think people would agree that Lee CW is just too strong here, plain and simple.
So I think Aamir was very brave and did try his best (though a bit naive in his comments:)). We can only wish him best of luck from here.

hahaha, calm down, it's only the commonwealth games. plus, won't it be more exciting if it weren't an all-malaysian final? WCH might not even play seriously if he has other events to worry about, i'm sure he'll concentrate more on the XD since gold and silver are guaranteed for MS and MD.

i think WCH will be concentrating on the XD, so might not perform to his best in the MS and MD. also, i think emms and robertson are going to walk the gold, they haven't even been pushed at all so far, so whatever score they've conceded in the past is pretty much meaningless. i would say, and i don't normally say this, but WS is going to be very exciting if they play like they played in the mixed team event ...

Why not, top badminton players in Malaysia earn a very good living. Lee CW will get about RM80,000 + bonus on top of his basic salary if he takes the MS title, and he also has the mixed team cahs bonus in the bag as well.
Malaysian national players take a basic salary (about RM6000 I think but this may vary) + a percentile bonus which is calculated based on their current world ranking each month. So if you stay among the top 15 in the world, you are guaranteed to have a huge monthly salary. I won't be surprised if you are among the top 5, you will be raking in more than 10K a month.
So, the monetary breakdown is such as far as I know:
1. Basic pay (fixed),
2. Bonus percentile based on current world rankings,
3. Cash incentives for winning prestigious tournaments,
4. All players keep 100% of prize winnings,
5. Guaranteed RM3500 a month after retirement until death.
No wonder Lee CW looks so relaxed, all he needs to do is play the game he loves and win for the country :)
P.S. Business class flights for all overseas tournaments as well lol.

That's not what I heard, but even if it is, the % is not much, player still keeps more than 80% I think. Besides, the coach gets loads of money already. Morten Frost and Park Joo Bong were reported to be having RM30000 per month or something like that

tutu_h 03-24-2006, 05:28 AM That's not what I heard, but even if it is, the % is not much, player still keeps more than 80% I think. Besides, the coach gets loads of money already. Morten Frost and Park Joo Bong were reported to be having RM30000 per month or something like that
ppl closed to the Chinese National team told me that the coach and the Club take 40% of the price money leaving only 60% for the Player.
whether it is true or not, this remains unclear.

In terms of badminton, I dont think any other nation are paying their players like that, not even China. Malaysian players are very fortunate. Lets not compare apples with oranges :)

I wasn't referring to the Chinese Team lol, i was talking about Malaysian National players. As far as I know, Malaysia players get to keep all their prize winnings.

That's becos BAM has other funding/sponsorship sources and complete support from Malaysian Govt. Funding of their Chinese/Indonesian counterparts may be different.
Actually, I sometimes feel that the players are too pampered. It was worse in the early 90s, esp. after we won Thomas Cup, the players were basically millionaires. None of them stayed as millionaires now, some having opened up businesses that failed.
Having said that, without pampering players too much, China is mass-producing world class players in many disciplines. Eg. in CG table tennis, many Chinese players turn up for different countries.

yup, no doubt.
becks is on what, £120k a week?
so, if LCW earns RM20k a month (including winnings), that'll mean he'll need to play for 3 1/2 years to make just as much.
plus, becks earns much more in advertising than his basic salary, so it's just unfair!

again, a major factor has to be the pool of people that they have to choose from. 1.2bn citizens, even if only 1% play the sport, that's 12m people, which is half malaysia's population.

that also explains y their coaches and Clubs can claim so much of money from the players.
for us is players market
for them is Coach/club market (so to say)
"if u don't want to take the job, we have plenty more to choose" is what they r practicing.
Big payday for the Msian players. :) All of them will sleep smiling.

This sort of pay just makes me sick, it is not as if Lee CW trains less harder. In fact, I won't be surprised if Lee is 3 times more hard working than Becks to keep up his precision-play condition :crying: .
mcchooi 03-24-2006, 11:44 AM it's all about demand. beckham is watched by billions all over the world whereas LCW by significantly less viewers...
alloh 03-24-2006, 12:10 PM people gamble on football.... but do you see any gamble on badminton?
That makes football stars rich!
madbad 03-24-2006, 12:58 PM Getting back on topic. I was occupied last night so missed following the action. I think MAS will sweep all the golds, with the only threat being Hallam of ENG. If her first encounter with WMC is anything to go by, that'll be the match of the evening. WMC, on the other hand, has proven to be quite resilient despite her bad back. The day off will do her a world of good. I feel for WCH as he's probably exhausted from his QF & SF matches. Says a lot about his fitness at his age to get through to both finals. Alas, he starts both as a prohibitive underdog and it would be a shame if he did not return home with a gold medal. Anyone knows if MAS management plays team orders? Looking forward to all the finals.
The Msian Team will not have any team orders. Once both team are fighting for GOLD... you are on your own. May the best player/s win.

I'm glad to hear that. Makes it much better for the paying public too. Good luck to all the finalists.

Looks like? They are from China (!).
It'll be close because the MAS girls always make it interesting by allowing their opponents to keep up. But in the end, I think the MAS pair will prevail
tze yang 03-24-2006, 09:50 PM Guys its more for the love of the sport...
I basically play for the love of it more than anything else in the world, that explains why i still play badminton competitively despite crashing out in first rounds in every tournament i play in...lol...im not exagerating...i am that bad, but what to do?i love it way too much to quit it...money doesnt drive me on in badminton
Btw i'd like to add, if players have their own sponsor, they ussually get another stash of bonus from there, i think yonex pay big players bout RM50k for a 5 star win...and korea is reportedly being the biggest takers from their players, bout 70% then indon 50%(which explains taufik's unhappiness) and then China 30-40% and m'sia 0...and i think denmark should be 0 too...
Inky2000 03-24-2006, 09:52 PM women doubles for m'sia might not win...s'pore team looks strong..the gals looks like from china!
They ARE from China, albeit second- or third-rated ones by China's standard. Singapore imported such Chinese players at their teen-age (some of them were from provincial sports schools) and groomed them as national players. Still, their achievements couldn't match their table tennis counterparts like Li Jiawei and Zhang Xueling (who followed a similar path to become Singapore players). Their teammate Li Li's Gold Medal at CWG'02 has been the only high note so far (but she then lost to WMC at Southeast Asian Games WS final). We shouldn't write off Jiang/Li's chance but don't overestimate them either. I guess the only way they could win is that Wong/Chin aren't their usual self.
Sammy 03-24-2006, 11:13 PM women doubles for m'sia might not win...s'pore team looks strong..the gals looks like from china!
They ARE "made" in China and imported to Singapore. Need those imported players to win medals (else medals are very hard to come) like what we did in table tennis.
Sammy 03-24-2006, 11:20 PM if this is the case, then we r fortunate.

Thats why we call "Professional" player. I think in term of pay BAM is doing a great job. Encourage youngster to involve in badminton and let them know their future are "secure" if they can make it to the national/international level. In today's society not many people would like to involve "full time" with full commitment in a sport that dont have some kind of "secure" future financial.

That's the fact of life that we have to learn to deal with it. Global popularity is very important even in sport. Football is the so called the most popular game in the whole world bringing millions of broadcasting rights, sponsor rights, expensive tickets, clubs souvenior/products and etc. That bring in money. The key word is POPULARITY. If badminton can over take football to become the most popular game in the world Im very sure badminton players gonna make as much money as the football players if not better no matter which country the players come from.

Absolutely! One's so-called "value" doesn't depend on how hardworking (s)he is, but how much money that one could generate. That's the way capitalism is.
Back to the competition ... Koo/Wong lost the 1st set 14-21 to Singaporeans in XD bronze-medal final.

maybe preserving energy for the doubles match later in the day yesterday...hmm
xijiayu 03-25-2006, 02:59 AM I am worried about Msian WD in the final. WPT made a lot of errors today and LYJ was playing better technically. KKK was out of form today and committed so many errors too. Msia need to work hard for WD tomorrow.

Of course ... as the overall standard of the Badminton event of CWG is even lower than Southeast Asian Games (the latter have Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore).
byelnats 03-26-2006, 04:57 AM Yeah, if Malaysia did not dominate this CWG, they have to start thingking of practicing harder. But well, they should celebrate now. This year Thomas and Uber Cup will be exciting.

Quite true, but gold is still gold. Even the table tennis field is not as strong as Asian Games, but no one is making fun of Singapore dominating the women's competition.
The important thing is to meet or exceed targets, given the strength of the opposition. Malaysia in general did not meet all their targets, but the badminton squad did. Still, we lost women's singles gold, too bad but we accept that the better player won.
