If Taufik will not come to the TC, it means that Indonesia will have smaller chance to win the TC. Sony is not yet mentally mature, I believe. Simon is even worst. So, this is really a bad news for Indonesia.

Too much? There's no such thing!

What was the last major tournament Taufik played in? must have been a long time ago.

You're right, I stand corrected. Maybe he's just plain pussy-whipped :p

If memory serves me right, I don't think he's played in a tournament this year yet. He didn't play the All-England nor any of the lead-up Euro tournaments (Swiss, German)

Very bad news for Indonesia indeed. I would go so far as to say that this reduces Indonesias chances of winning the trophy to virtually nil. Taufik was the key.

Where did you read this? Was it an official source?

"Sony is being prepared to be the first singles" -- that is the headline in Kompas today. Apparently, Taufik has pulled his back muscles during training last week and the doctors advised him to rest and undergo some theraphy.

I think ever since the victory in Aneheim, you could almost sense that Taufik is no longer interested in competing anymore. He only competed in Indonesian Open and Hong Kong Open, losing out in the early rounds to Simon and WCH respectively. He then pulled out of the China Open right after losing in HK, claiming stomach injury. Then, he played only in the team competition of the SEA Games in December, winning all matches, including a straight set victory against LCW. Unfortunately, that did not help at all because Malaysia eventually triumped.

At the beginning of this year, he announced that he was preparing for his wedding and pulled out of the Swiss and All England Opens. The last tournament he competed in was the Asian qualifying phase of the Thomas Cup, winning one and losing two matches (against Boonsak and LCW).

With Taufik almost certain to be out of the Thomas Cup Finals, that goes Indonesia's chance of winning the trophy back, especially if they are going to stick to the 3-singles, then 2-doubles format. Sony, Simon, and Markus Wijanu is of no match even to Korea's Lee Hyun Il, Shon Sheing Mo, and Park Sung Hwan. I will foresee them ending up as second in the group and then win one more match in the playoff, before succumbing to Malaysia in the quarter-final. Unless of course, there is a big miracle and all 3 singles play their best form in all the matches.

I think this is the strategy of PBSI. Taufik always play in 2nd Singles in the past TC. I think PBSI also not very confident that Taufik could win the 1st point, that's why PBSI always let Taufik plays in 2nd Singles. Furthermore with this 21 scoring system, it is very unconfirmed that Taufik could beat any team's 1st singles (LD, LCW, LHI, PG). He even lost to Bonsak Ponsana recently.... but Bonsak also a great player, never under estimate on him :)
From my opinion, if Taufik plays in 2nd singles then Indonesian Team will only have better chances.

Please remember, Taufik is not undefeated.... no one either in badminton ~!

No...it is impossible to place Soni as the first SIngle and Taufik as a second single...the difference in the ranking score between Taufik and Soni is wide.
One thing is clear that Taufik has sustained very serious injury. HE WILL NOT GO TO JAPAN.

SO...it is time for Malaysia, China, Denmark and Korea to party!!!:D

Not really. If without Taufik, Sonny also is the secret weapon of Indonesian Team. I dare to say Sonny will performan greatly in Japan.

Sony might perform well but you could say the INA team was probably of the mentality that they had a point in the bag already with Taufik. Sony's chances of a win, IMHO, against the big guns are below 50%. Imagine how demoralised the team feels going into every match knowing that if Sony loses, they're pretty much done. Their great doubles pairs might get them to 2-2 but whoever INA throws to the wolves for the 3rd singles will be quickly devoured.

Sony and Simon must improve greatly within the next few months if they want to stand a chance of winning anything at all this coming TC. However, this is very unlikely and so we can more or less say Indonesia is not going to get past the first knock out stage. It is so unfortunate that Taufik is injured but things happen and we must just accept it as it is. If it is of any consolation, it is a reminder to all MS players in the Indonesian team that they should never rely on any one person to do the job for them. They all have a role to play for their country. I hope the thrashing both of them are about to get in their TC matches will hit reality home that they need to buck up. Man, am I harsh or am I harsh?

Agree with you.

If someone to blame for this, its the PBSI who so mean with the money to send players to lots of tournaments. If they send 3-4 potential players beside Taufik to at least 10 events a year, we still had a small chance to win the Cup.

Now, we even had to fight real hard if we want to reach the QF of Thomas Cup.

Sony's recent losses were due to his WEAK physical condition. I read in BOLA that he has been trained by Tahir Djide recently for TC. Tahir Jide was the physical trainer of Icuk and Liem Swie King. According to Tahir, Sony's physical performance has significantly improved.

COnsidering that Taufik will NOT go to Japan, Indonesia's chance of winning the TC is 30%. SOny will play a key role. Let's see if his performance is ABC is good and he wins in ABC, Indonesia's chance of bringing back the TC become 40%, as we know that Chinese top players will not participate in ABC.

I guess taking the latest condition into consideration, Indonesia's chance of winning the TC is 30%. WIthout Taufik, Indonesia will reach Semi Final at the maximum.

INA only hope 'the ace card' will be back healthy soon at 'D-day'.Without 'the ace card' be ready to see INA ousted from semifinal TC.The format in upcoming Japan TC is very disadvantage for INA team: SSSDD (three singles party in consecutive three matches and two doubles party in last two matches). As we know,INA's MS is the weakest better than another competitor's MS such as CHN-MAS-DEN.For the best scenario INA will crackdown KOR at Group B to meet CHN in semifinal.Certainly,we can predict who-meet-who between CHN and INA in 1st-2nd-3rd singles : LD vs Sony ; CH?BCL vs Simon ; BCL?CJ vs Markus. And the finalist goes to...

Taufik's sore back hurts Indonesia's hopes for Thomas Cup

JAKARTA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's prospects in next month's Thomas Cup men's team badminton championship were dealt a blow when Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat hurt his back last week, the Jakarta Post said here on Thursday.

Taufik is now undergoing therapy to try and be ready for the April 28 and May 4 championship in Japan. The 24-year-old would skip the Asian Championships in Johor Baru, Malaysia, from March 28 to April 2, said the paper.

"We don't know if Taufik will be fit for the Thomas Cup," Badminton Association of Indonesia training official Lius Pongoh was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Assistant coach Paulus Firman said that Taufik had an MRI on Tuesday night, after the injury first surfaced last Wednesday.

If Taufik was unable to answer the call in Japan, the team would have to rely on second singles Sony Dwi Kuncoro, the paper added.

Even Lin Dan, Chen Hong, Bao CL and Taufik also lost to Lee CW in Malaysia. Do you think Sony has any chance to beat Lee CW in Malaysia base on current form? Even Hafiz and Wong CH can trouble Sony in Malaysia.:D

Yeah, but Taufik lost his match to Lee Tsuen Seng in the final. Having said that, it is possible still for Indonesia to win TC without Taufik, though not very likely.

Let's hope he recovers, playing Indonesia without Taufik (whether we win or not) is no fun.

Taufik's fitness in doubt for Thomas Cup
Damar Harsanto, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The good news is that world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat will rejoin Indonesia's Thomas Cup squad after a one-month injury break. The bad news is he may not be 100 percent for the biennial men's team badminton event in Japan later this month.

"I haven't fully recovered. I'm still in the recovery process from my waist injury," the 25-year-old told reporters Tuesday. "I hope the next 20 days will be enough time for me to recover."

Taufik suffered the injury during practice March 15. The injury forced him to miss the just-concluded Asian Badminton Championships in Johor Baru, Malaysia.

Orthopedist Nicolaas Budiparama, who is treating the 2004 Athens Olympic gold medalist, said Taufik might not fully recover from his injury before the Thomas Cup.

"What he can do is undergo a special training program, under the combined supervision of coaches and doctors, to prevent the injury from getting worse," he said.

Taufik's injury has Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) officials concerned about Indonesia's chances of winning the coveted Thomas Cup trophy for the 14th time at the April 28 to May 7 event in Sendai and Tokyo.

PBSI chairman Sutiyoso said Taufik's presence on the squad was crucial to the team's confidence.

"We have no choice but to field Taufik. We can't take the risk of deploying our second best single's player, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, as the first singles to face stronger rivals like Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai (of China)," he said.

Though he has not yet fully recovered, Taufik took part in a practice session Tuesday at the national training camp in Cipayung, East Jakarta.

Taufik last played in February's Asia zone qualifying session for the Thomas Cup in Jaipur, India.

At the Asian Badminton Championships, the best result for members of Indonesia's Thomas Cup squad was the quarterfinals. The country's only title came from the mixed doubles pair of Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir.

At the Thomas Cup, Indonesia has been drawn in Group B with South Korea, the group's top seed, and New Zealand. It should be the favorite to win its opening round match against India of group A, possibly setting up a meeting with Malaysia, the top seed in group D, in the next round.

Defending champion China is the top seed in Group A with Germany and India, while Denmark, the runner-up at the last Thomas Cup, is in Group C with Japan and South Africa. Malaysia is in Group D with England and the U.S.
