Mixed Team is like the Sudirman Cup format where there are
1 MS
1 WS
1 MD
1 WD
1 XD
In order to have a strong team both male and female players must be strong and competative. Malaysian Mixed Team used to be a weaker team due to weaker female players though Malaysia has "stronger" male players. With the more exposure of female players hopefully Malaysia will be able to come out with one of the best Mixed Team in the world to challenge the Sudirman Cup.
tehsham 03-23-2006, 03:19 AM I like the word 'used to be a weaker team' though there are some improvement but very much are dependant on two or three players only .....only 1 single and double through to the last 8 and the rest dropped out, so it will take a much longer time to be among the best Mixed Team in the world to challenge the Sudirman Cup
Dreamzz 03-23-2006, 03:22 AM still can't see anyone beating china, especially in a team especially where women are involved. no other country has the depth in both men and women to compete.
PandaLord 03-23-2006, 03:24 AM So to get this straight, Mixed Team is all the singles, doubles, mixed doubles jumbled up together ? What ever for when theres already the individual events out there ?

This is the team event. If you know the Sudirman Cup format you'll understand. Well, Thomas Cup is for men team. Uber Cup is for women team and Sudirman Cup is for mixed team.
tehsham 03-23-2006, 03:30 AM In some tournament like SEA Games, they had team events for men and ladies separately and also like Thomas Cup for men and Uber Cup for women but in Commonwealth Games, they had only one team event so it will comprise of all the individual events in the team tournament but team like Malaysia had 2 strong men singles, only one can play in the team at each time
FrenziedEye 03-23-2006, 03:30 AM haha ...team unity buddy =)
But i personally think the atmosphere for teams events is much more energetic compared to some individual events....
(of course...there is no comparison between the singles finals!)
I guess its just a matter of who wants to be the best nation at everything =P
Sammy 03-23-2006, 03:39 AM I like the word 'used to be a weaker team' though there are some improvement but very much are dependant on two or three players only .....only 1 single and double through to the last 8 and the rest dropped out, so it will take a much longer time to be among the best Mixed Team in the world to challenge the Sudirman Cup
It would be nice to see more Malaysian female players be able to challenge top female players around the world. BAM should give more international exposure to female players. Neighbouring country Thailand is catching up their female players are playing some good badminton lately. Singapore is improving with their imports. May be BAM should consider importing players if they cant find good talents locally.
tehsham 03-23-2006, 03:43 AM Maybe WMC performance will spurs and motivate more ladies players, well believe that the people in power at BAM would not like to see or hear a Malaysian imported team

Hahaha....why not? They can learn from Singapore. How about buying the whole Brazilian team and stand a chance to win the World Cup? :D
tutu_h 03-23-2006, 03:56 AM Hopefully Julia Wong Pei Xian can take over Wong Mew Choo. she is only 18 and BAM should let her gain more experience by sending her to higher star competitions.
tehsham 03-23-2006, 03:59 AM I think Singapore is doing well with their import which are world standard but the very few import of Malaysia in athletic and shooting (which was 'imported' for the 98 Games) are pensioners and did not even win a gold medal at Commonwealth level (except maybe the boxer but he failed at the SEA Games)
A long term planning with the abundance of talents and good exposure may do the tricks for Malaysia, eg like the current CG 2 women singles were fielded and 2 pairs in the mixed though the rules allowed 4 participants from each country (I think)
tehsham 03-23-2006, 04:01 AM My apology to PandaLord for side tracking the thread
PandaLord 03-23-2006, 04:06 AM Ugh..i think im lost. I didnt even know that Thomas Cup was for men and Uber for women.

I think you must be new to badminton.
Well, in a team event (Thomas Cup) each team is to consist of
3 MS
2 MD
Team A vs Team B where
1st MS (A) vs 1st MS (B) --> winner will be given one point
1st MD (A) vs 1st MD (B) --> winner will be given one point
2nd MS (A) vs 2nd MS (B) --> winner will be given one point
2nd MD (A) vs 2nd MD (B) --> winner will be given one point
3rd MS (A) vs 3rd MS (B) --> winner will be given one point
The team with the most point will win the match.
Same format goes to the Uber Cup (female)
Team A vs Team B where
1st WS (A) vs 1st WS (B) --> winner will be given one point
1st WD (A) vs 1st WD (B) --> winner will be given one point
2nd WS (A) vs 2nd WS (B) --> winner will be given one point
2nd WD (A) vs 2nd WD (B) --> winner will be given one point
3rd WS (A) vs 3rd WS (B) --> winner will be given one point
The team with the most point will win the match.
This are the Sudirman Cup format (mixed team)
Team A vs Team B where
MS (A) vs MS (B) --> winner will be given one point
WS (A) vs WS (B) --> winner will be given one point
MD (A) vs MD (B) --> winner will be given one point
WD (A) vs WD (B) --> winner will be given one point
XD (A) vs XD (B) --> winner will be given one point
The team with the most point will win the match.
cxytdn 03-23-2006, 04:18 AM The IBF Events include:
Team Events - "Three Big Cups":
1.Men's Team World Championship For Thomas Cup
2.Women's Team World Championship For Uber Cup
3.Mixed Team World Championship For Sudirman Cup
Individual Events - "Three Big Tournaments"
1.World Championships/Olympics Badminton Competition
2.World Cup
3.World Grand Prix Finals [pause]
hcyong 03-23-2006, 05:10 AM I like the word 'used to be a weaker team' though there are some improvement but very much are dependant on two or three players only .....only 1 single and double through to the last 8 and the rest dropped out, so it will take a much longer time to be among the best Mixed Team in the world to challenge the Sudirman Cup
You only need 1 good WS and 1 good WD to be a good mixed team. You don't need two. It so happens that this is the case for Malaysia currently. We are decent in mixed team competitions but when it comes to the Uber Cup, that's when our weakness in the second and third strings are exposed.
alloh 03-23-2006, 10:38 AM still can't see anyone beating china, especially in a team especially where women are involved. no other country has the depth in both men and women to compete.
Errr...... not really. I think Indonesia has the ability to beat China Mixed Team.
XD - 50:50
MS - 50:50
WS - China
MD - 40:60 (to Indonesia)
WD - China
other 03-23-2006, 11:00 AM still can't see anyone beating china, especially in a team especially where women are involved. no other country has the depth in both men and women to compete.
um back to the topic...good thing china isn't in the commenwealth then:P
also i don't think you require that much strength in depth for a mixed team match than the thomas/uber cup, since you need to be playing your 3rd best singles and 2nd best doubles, whereas in Commenwealth games, you play only your best players for each event.
jamesd20 03-23-2006, 11:04 AM please keep to the topic (Commonwealth games mixed tournament)

Ahh i see, thanks that helps alot ! So in essense, each country will belt out 3 men singles players and 2 MD teams and the country with the most points will win then ?
And nah im not new, ive been playing quite a while and watching too but embarassingly enough, i had no idea how the format goes. My sports channel usually showed the 'good finals' only so i couldnt tell.
