View Full Version : Tension to the MAX.

I am just wondering, how many of you guys out there are currently playing with a racket string at tension more than the specified max by the manucturers (as your main racket)? If possible, name the brand and tension used. Also, do you string the racket yourself or, if not, how do you convince the stringer to string it beyond what is specified on the racket? How do you know in the beginning that the the racket can withstand such tension?

After watching the Commonwealth Games live and reading this forum, I find myself in a position of wanting to know how does it feel like playing with a racket that is strung to the extreme. The feeling is just like wanting to own a Subaru WRX and further tune it to the closest possible to one driven by the WRC Pro drivers and drive on a normal road even though I know I lack the skill, physical and mental strength to drive the car (Well, at least with badminton, I know I won't kill someone and the worst case is injured my own shoulder :D ).

Woo Hoo, this is my very first thread. Time's up. Need to get ready to watch the final CG. Oh, one last thing before I go, if you are reading this Kwun, thanks for creating such great forum for all badminton fans. God bless you.

Have had a Carlton AS1 strung to 40lbs.

You need to say to your stringer that you do not hold them responsible for any damage sustained to the racket when they attempt to string it to such a high tension.

Crazy! Are you a top 20 world ranked player?
One mishit will not only make your strings crash but also your frame.
Last olympics a referee asked a top player if he could try out his racket strung at 17kg, that is slightly less then 40lbs and the frame was completely broken after 2 hits...

At 40lbs? your plastic grommet are most likely cut through to the frame.

A carlton as1 would feel like a brick at that tension, considering the racket is so stiff already.

Seriously if I had my rackets strung with that it would not last an hour.....without a mis-hit.

Wow, I think 40lbs is a bit too much. Top players only string up to 30lbs, right? If you are one of those player who can play with string tension close to 30lbs (lets say 26, 27, 28 & 30), meaning you can play normally without any physical strain, does it make you a better player than those who play at lower tension? What level do you consider yourself (top five in your competition group or state player or national)?
What I am trying to relate here is, does it make you a better player being able to play at higher tension? Let's just say that someone who has been a top player in his group playing with a racket at 22lbs and he wanted to further improve his skill, will increasing the tension help (with more training on the wrist and arm)? If not, why does the world top players use such high tension.

Dill, thanks for your advise. I will keep that in mind when I go purchased my Nano9K (when available in Melbourne) but definitely not 40lbs. :)

you are crazy to string it at 40lbs. your racquet frame will break anytime if you fail to hit it at the right stop...

normally, advanced players or national players string above 30lbs because they are sponsered.. plus, you need the skill and strength to hit the shuttle because the racquet is too stiff..

So you are making a comeback after a year's hibernation! And with arguably the best racket currently available too! I hope our BC Melbourne fun games played a part in your decision. Come to think of it, your smashes will be more deadly and I hope Kim can find some counter-measures! Otherwise we may have to send our secret weapons to deal with you (Maz & Adelina prepare yourselves!) :D

If people actually bothered to read the thread after Dill's post that he had linked to, they might've noticed that it was done in an experiment style process, given certain factors such as:

The reason that I got the AS1 strung so high is because Carlton say that it will take the tension

My reasoning for putting the tensions stupidly high was to see how much the racket could take before it shattered

Two linked reasonings from the thread he posted...

Maybe he'll seem a little less 'crazy', now. :p

Hey Loh, what are you doing in the equipment section? and yeah, I am thinking of joining a social game, once a week. Don't have to send Maz or Adelina cos I can't even beat you!! That's why have to get the best from Yonex NS9K. Hopefully, I can generate more powerful smash to beat you the next time we meet, Beijing 2008. :)
