JAKARTA: Olympic badminton gold medallist Taufik Hidayat is receiving treatment for a back injury, but Indonesian officials are hopeful he will be fit to contest this month’s Thomas Cup Finals in Japan.

“Our team still depend on Taufik Hidayat,” Rudy Hartono, chief of development affairs for the Indonesian Badminton Association, said yesterday.

“We are giving him the best treatment to enable him to join the team.”

Taufik, who is also the sport’s world champion, injured his back in practice last month, forcing him to miss last week’s Asian Badminton Championships in Malaysia.

“He is still recovering, but we are optimistic he will fully recover within two or three weeks,” said Rudy.

China are the current holders of the Thomas Cup, badminton’s premier men’s team event. It is held every two years, this time from April 28 to May 7 in the Japanese cities of Sendai and Tokyo.

Back injuries are also not to be trifled with!

At the recent ABC, I saw Boonsak putting on a waist brace, presumably to support his back muscles and to prevent serious injury. I also observed that many of the Chinese women players also do the same thing.

yes!i heard it's very hard to cure, cause when you make many everyday movements you use your back muscles.(saw this from discovery i remember)

Tell me about it.....back injury is the last thing you want to get. After injuring mine a year ago, I have to go through physical therapy on regular basis, get a extra firm mattress, extra warm-ups before playing, ...etc and it is still not completely healed...

heard that Taufik's injury includes something wrong with his back bones, guess it's even worse.

From previous posts, it is clear that back injuries should not be taken lightly. For TH's sake and his long-term career, maybe PBSI should just let him stay home for the TC. Of course it sucks real bad for the Indonesian team (and I am Indonesian so I really want them to win), but maybe PBSI should just bite the bullet and not send him off to the tournament. I onc had a back injury myself and it is difficult enough to go about daily activities, let alone intense sports...
