Dear all,
I've been informed of different opinions.
Please clarify if it's considered a FOUL should your return smashed shuttle hits your opponent's body.
Whatever your answer is, Please explain WHY.
and, if you have the time, please give me a link to a credible source to support your answer.
I've placed bets on my opinion. Let's just hope im right.
Thanks.
appreciate it loads.

Not a "foul" but a "fault"
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/badminton-central/content/view/82/56/1/11/
It is a ‘fault’:
13.2 if in play, the shuttle:
13.2.5 touches the person or dress of a player; or
13.2.6 touches any other object or person outside the immediate surroundings of the court;
It's a fault once it touches the person's body/dress.
Whether you're being offensive to the person, then it is considered acceptable, unless you're bullying someone with skill levels way below yours.

In a competitive level (and healthy environment), the side touches the shuttle using any part of body is considered as fault. The opponent award the victory of this particular rally. Therefore, say if you lauch a smash, and hit your opponent, you win the rally. Therefore, aiming the body is an acceptable strategy in badminton, especially effective in fast paced double games.
However, bully hitting opponents (especially if there's huge gap in skill) with intention of injury or show-off attitude, is not acceptable.

Right, definitely not acceptable but allowed.

Hey Yin Hun,
Definitely a FAULT as stated clearly in the law:
13.2 if in play, the shuttle:
13.2.5 touches the person or dress of a player; or
13.2.6 touches any other object or person outside the immediate surroundings of the court;
I didn't know you like to play these kind of shots to your opponents!
I better take note of that!:D
otherwise my body will turn blue and black from your abuses!:crying:

Haha....hey cendolabc, sounds like you need to change partner la. Definitely need one who can hit the shuttle further away to the back or a bit lower when doing drop shot.

learn to defend urself... i used to 'kene' also... be careful when playing
DivingBirdie

of course allowed. sometimes players good in stretching reach out for the shuttle well, even at far spots, and smashing against their bodies would prove a better strategy than elsewhere if he's a good stretcher

I think it takes courage to face your embarrassment, and it's the first steps towards improvement. Take the time, learn the skills, and you'll be well on your way.
Good luck, cendolabc.

Interesting thread. To follow-up, what if your opponent tried a net kill, but the bird hit your forehead (let say you are right in front of net) and the bird bounced back to your opponent's side and onto the floor. Do you win the point?
chessymonkey
04-17-2006, 08:01 AM
well the bird hit yr forehead so u lose the rally there already
besides, aim for the body is one of the tatic to use
when u come against some really good runner that can get to
anywhere on court or if the opponent is very tall.
Of course u won't do it when there is a clear skill difference
but when both side r really close, then every tatic counts.

Hi, Don't feel bad or embarassed as even the pros were all beginners once.
Smashing at an opponent's racket-arm is a very basic strategy that any coach will teach once a beginner have directional control of the smashes. It'll often be a winner or force a weak return setting up for a kill.
Smashing at the racket arm is more effective than smashing at the head / face. Although psychologically intimidating, shuttles coming at your face is easy to direct to an open space on the court and turn the opponent's offence into defence.
Keep in mind, becareful of every player's eyes whether you are defending or smashing. Rupture of the eyeball is a possibility and this injury is probably the most dangerous injury you can get from badminton (apart from the usual knee, ankle, elbow etc.)
So take extra care if you don't wear glasses. A point / shot is not worth risking injury to your eyes. Remember that it was reported that Korea's SHON SEUNG MO's damaged his eye from such injury.
Take care everyone !

With all due respect, if the fella can consistently smash and hit you, then its quite an honour to be playing him because he must be pretty accurate and good. Either that or you're a smash magnet.

me, being a smash-magnet - correct.
him, beng consistently good - nope. i noticed that he made loads of silly mistakes..no doubt, he's better than me. but i have to agree with the previous posts in this thread that it's not at ALL admirable to 'smash' at a female amateur's face and head consecutively..
not cool man.. *thumbs down*

very true, but nothing u can do untill the day he learn not to
aim for ppl's head, before that day come, remeber when u r expecting a smash right at yr face or if u'r standing too clsoe to the net and have no time to back off. u have a racket and it should be place in front of your body. it can be a very good shield, don't hesiate and put it in front of your face if you feel that yr in danger of a head shot. who knows perhpes a few lucky rebound would make him think twice before going for a lady's face again.

guess what?
got smashed at again,
but this time, i'm sure this new fella did it unintentionally,
also, it didn't hurt.
when he apologised, i answered,
"don't worry, it MUST happen to me each week"

But how did the person get to keep aiming at someone's face or body where most of the time we had trouble keeping our smashes in? :D

Dear Cendolabc,
Don't turn angry. If your opponent smashes on your face frequently it means you allow him to do that.
1)Avoid mid court and weak returns
2)Avoid moving to the net always expecting net drops.A good lunge is enough
3)Don't take eyes from the shuttle cock and turn face.
4)Practice eye-arm coordination
One day you can smash on the body of your opponent and immediately after the body shot say "sorry."

hey Joonu,
nah,, my anger didn't last 10 seconds.
I apply and learn life's philosophy while playing on the court.
Know when to attack, when to defend...
when fail to do so,- ponder why...and seek counsel...
like what i did...:)
thanks guys.. will note all the tips given.
terima kasih ( thank you)

I never smash at the face............I do not need to. At the body is fine.
Even seen anyone who has been hit in the eye with a shuttle? ouch!
Why increase the odds of hurting someone like that. I know someone who is now blind in one eye, and can't play anymore.
MORAL: If you want to hit someone in the head.........Take up boxing instead.

If it is understood that the best place to defend against a smash is not at the net, then the fear of being smashed at should never arise.

MORAL: If you want to hit someone in the head.........Take up boxing instead.
Sometimes I get hit on the head. Sometimes I hit people on the head. Often times me and my friends try our best to hit each other on the head, without success but plenty of laughter. It's all part of the game. Either learn to defend yourself or learn to find games that's on your own level.
In a lot of social badminton where people are mixed up for the sake of mixing up, that's when accidents happen when the weak is pitted against the strong.

At my standard my defence has already been learnt........years ago.
Trust me it is all fun trying to 'Tunnel' shot opponents in the head or face..........until someone gets hit in the eye........accidents happen though.
At the speed i smash at...............i dare not aim at someones face.
CoolDoo6
04-25-2006, 09:08 AM
At my standard, I have no accuracy. On the many occasions I hit people on the head/face, I did not aim for them. I smashed and their head/face was in the way. Accidents can happen whether you aim or not. The best approach remains that one should learn quickly not to get in harm's way. If you insist in waking on the road rather than on the side walk, then sooner or later you are going to get run over by a bus.

This is the new moral of the day;)
An old team mates mother got blinded in one eye from being hit in the eye.........so i know the damage(permanant) it can do. So I avoid doing it on purpose at all cost.........I don't want something like that on my concious if i did it on purpose...........I would probably quit playing.

I played a friendly mixed doubles a while ago and hit my female opponent on the head with a smash down the middle. I apologised and we carried on. A few minutes later there was a weak lift and I thought I'd smash the return. I had a quick look to see that my female opponent was standing in the middle and aimed a smash down the left hand side. Problem was she saw me about to smash and stepped away down the left hand side to escape....and got hit again!

ahh head-shots....we actually had some sort of competition at my club. Was quite funny because 80% were all 'near hits'.
I actually head-shot somebody from the baseline with a smash. that was real fun. mostly because it looked hilarious, but no harm done (I hope)

Aim between the eyes! I am more interested in scoring a point then trying to get a head shot or hit in general on the player. Smashing at opponents because of greater skill only lacks interest for badminton in general.
