A victory in the Copenhagen Masters would have been, for Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, like icing on the splendid cake after their heroic year, clinching back to back the Commonwealth title and the World Championship title. Yet it wasn’t to be, as Denmark’s Laybourn and Rytter Juhl also had some things to celebrate in 2006; a title in the European Championships and a very good year all around. In front of a packed house – no seat left in the 1400 capacity Falconer Center – the Danes worked wonders and led from start to finish in both games, even if at some point, the English seemed to be able to get back into the game. Each time, Laybourn’s good sense of the game added with Juhl’s power made the difference while their opponents were struggling to get their tempo going. Motivating each other like always, widely supported, the two friends from the National team won 21/16 – 21/17. “It was really a good match. We knew that Nathan wasn’t playing at his best and we used that. When he plays well, they are the best in the world but he has his bad days so we hoped our tactic would work,” said Laybourn. The tactic was, “To avoid flat games and letting them get control as Gail is brilliant at the net. So, we made Nathan work for the points and relied more on our defense, which has been a point we’ve been working on,”’ added Juhl. “It’s the consistency in our game which pleases me the most as we are able to focus better and not have ups and downs,” added the tall, smiling girl. They end up the year in the best way, hoping for success in 2007. “This is an important win but overall we’ve had a great year. After 2005, we wanted to prove to everyone that we could actually keep it up and we did so. Now, we haven’t really felt the pressure of being the new number ones but we know that some pairs are coming up, like Lars Paaske and Mette Schjoldager will be very strong together,” said Laybourn. briangarg 09-12-2009, 02:27 AM Well hearty congratulation to u Thomas & all the bessssssssssssssssssssssst!!! |
