Actually, drinking tea by Malaysian term is different than the actual Chinese term. Our "drinking tea" means mainly going out to a stall by the road or "kopitiam" at night with friends and order drinks and chatting, wasting the night away which we call "mamaking" or "yumcha" and not necessary drinking tea literally. It seems that this a culture which Malaysians are obsessed with, esepcially with the younger generation. However I do not, speculate that TBH likes mamaking and not "drinking tea" so to speak or vice versa. However, I'm sure yannie wouldn't mind having it either way with TBH~

YOUNGSTER Tan Boon Heong, who will partner senior Koo Kien Keat for only the third time in the Doha Asian Games, aims to make the combination work.

For Boon Heong, 19, being paired with a senior player will help him realise his dream of becoming a leading doubles player in the country.

The talented youngster from Selangor partnered Kien Keat for the first time in the Thomas Cup in May and in the Japan Open where they lost to former world champions Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya in the final.

However, Boon Heong is not new on the international scene.

He has earned valuable experience playing at the highest level for the past two years with former partner Hoon Thien How.

Boon Heong and Thien How won the doubles title in World Junior Championships in 2004.

"I will make full use of this opportunity and justify chief coach Yap Kim Hock’s faith in me," he said after the Games squad met chef-de-mission Datuk A Sani Karim at the National Sports Council in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

"We have about a month to polish up our skills. However, I do not foresee a problem as both of us have a similar style," added Boon Heong.

Kien Keat is also excited about his new partnership with Boon Heong.

"I have never played a mentor’s role in my badminton career. During my days with Chan Chong Ming, he was the one who led me and now I will be playing that role," said Kien Keat, 21.

Kean Keat is confident the combination can work because he feels Boon Heong is a very talented and highly skilled player.

Meanwhile, Kim Hock, who is aware that Malaysia’s best bet of winning a gold medal in Doha is in the men’s doubles, declined to comment whether Lin Woon Fui-Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari and Kien Keat-Boon Heong were capable of delivering gold.

"We have an equal chance to win gold medals in all of the men’s events. Both our pairs can go far if they play to their potential. The men’s doubles event will be an open affair as none of the Asian pairs have really dominated in all tournaments throughout the year," said Kim Hock.

He said they picked new pairs for the Asian Games to groom them for the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics.

Badminton: Let the good times roll

PETALING JAYA: It has been a year of many breakthroughs for young doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong.

And he will be out to add another feather in his cap when he competes in the Doha Asian Games next month with his new partner, Koo Kien Keat.

Boon Heong-Kien Keat is one of the two Malaysian men's pairs named for the Games. The other pair will also be making their Asiad debut – Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui.


BOON HEONG: Will team up with new partner Koo Kien Keat at the Asian Games in Doha.

The 19-year-old Boon Heong, who has been a regular feature in international tournaments this year, will be out to end the year with a strong finish.

“A year ago, I would not have imagined all these (representing Malaysia in major tournaments). But so far, it has been a good year for me. I am happy with that,” said Boon Heong.

The Kedahan showed that he was a player with tremendous potential when he won the world junior doubles title partnering Hoon Thien How in Vancouver in 2004.

After a year of exposure to Open tournaments, he showed his prominence this year by emerging as the runners-up at the Asian Championships, partnering Thien How.

Boon Heong earned a surprise call-up for the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan and was a sparring partner for the players for the World Championships in Madrid.

He partnered Kien Keat for a runners-up finish at the Japan Open and was finally named in the team for the Asiad as the replacement for Chan Chong Ming.

The lanky shuttler, however, is determined to keep his feet on the ground despite being one of the national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky's favourite picks this year.

“I am still the same player. There is still so much more to be achieved. For me, the focus is on giving my best in training and competitions. I do not want to be distracted with anything else,” he said.

For now, the easy going Boon Heong has vowed to repay the faith the coach has in him by doing well in the Asiad.

“Kien Keat is my new partner and our best achievement was at the Japan Open. But I know I could have played better then (they went down to Indonesian veterans Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya in the final),” he said.

“I am working on minimizing my mistakes. It will be not be easy for us at the Asiad but we will not let our opponents intimidate us. We will give our best and try to win a medal.”

Based on Boon Heong's and Kien Keat's good partnerships and results, the National Sports Council (NSC) after a meeting with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaches, have projected the new pair to win a bronze in Doha.

The draw will be released on Saturday and if it is favourable for the duo, Kien Keat-Boon Heong may even have a shot at winning the gold medal.

Although CTF & LWW are more weaker now compare with the past, but for me, they still are in the list of top 3 in Malaysia men's double. The other two pair, obviously are KKK & TBH and CCM & HTH.
In the aspest of experiences, sure is CTF & LWW. But in the other way round, KKK and HTH are more potential to bring out medal to Malaysia in the future ( and maybe now too).
