Hello Cat,
Hmmm... I already replied but it didn't get on for some reason.
We hope to get an array of players from Canada and US but we don't know who yet. Our tournament director is Mike Yang, Chris Lawrence, and Frank Yang. Chris is very renowned as he is the Tournament Committee Chairman for the USAB and he is completely dedicated to this tournament. Mike has flown to Boston and he has flown to GGBC to have meetings so they are very serious to making this a fantastic tournout!! Chris has got all the entries with him in Boston so when the time comes we will ask him to make his post here too OK? We certainly hope you will come too! To play or to watch. Whichever will be a great experience!
Regards, Sally

any other BC'ers aside from Pete and Paul?
i will be there for much of the tournament, but as i don't want to embarrass myself with my rusty badminton skills, i will be there taking pictures for GGBC. i will be wearing a BC t-shirt and holding a big camera, acting like i am a pro-photographer.

i was told similarly. Mike said the draws won't be available until the tournament to prevent local players from practicing beforehand.
i can understand that if the draws includes the court assignments.
i asked Mike whether they will release the names only. let's see what he says. i think releasing the names will be informative as that will let potential spectators know who will be playing...

yes indeed.
and not only that, it will be a very well run tournament. GGBC flew in a tournament director and an IBF accreditated umpire from Boston. i have also chatted with Sally/Mike and know that they have put in a lot of effort to polish everything into perfection.
it is our duty as a badminton fan to go and support them.

Good to know that. So every games will have umpire and line judge? wow !! this is so cool, so there wont be any bad call, score cheating etc, every player will focus on the game. Will they provide birds for free as well? this is very exciting. I cant wait to watch :p.
Do you know if Mike will play mix with Sally? will he play single as well or double? Mike is a very good and talented player(US no.1 single if I remember correctly), and I am sure he will win this tournament.

linesmen: i don't know. i will be surprised if there are no linemen for the final/semi. but for other matches, it may not be practical as space is limited. GGBC can confirm.
Yonex AS50 will be supplied for all matches.

I am sure whatever event he play he will win since he is the no. 1 US single. Cant wait to see he whacks his opponent. I heard Sally also plays well, and could show an upset especially playin with ex-national China player. Ginsong is magnificent and will make Halim down.

Hmm, wow, this looks like the mini-version of the US Nationals or US Open tourneys(which were held recently @ OCBC), as there are ex-international pro players playing in the event. Correct me if i'm wrong, but this must be the 1st big tournament GGBC has held?? Or maybe the 1st sizeable badminton tourney in NorCal??.. ;)

i don't think it will be possible. there simply isn't enough bandwidth to handle the upstream data. and it will also bog down the GGBC internet connection. not to say the quality is really bad also.
Sally mentioned that there will be video recorders during the matches. so the best that we can do is to ask them to upload the video to Google or youtube.

Just got back from spectating, pretty existing first day, all things considered. It's pretty impressive how many great matches can take place back-to-back without the B,C,D,etc flights intruding on the action ;)
I saw Kwun come at around 5ish with his camera, ensuing in a feverish session of picture snapping--must have gotten some great angles lying on the ground, standing on benches, etc :) Amidst all the Yonex and United Commercial Bank banners, I was surprised to see a non-corporate BadmintonCentral.com banner!
Men's singles #1 seed was knocked out in quarters (Hubert Kostro). Remaining semifinalists are Eric Go, Radu Milesvchi, Andrew Todt, and Wei Qin Zi. All four pretty much steamrolled their opponents.
Women's semifinalists are #1 seed Eva Lee, Lauren Todt, Lili Zhou and a fourth whose name escapes me at the moment.
Mike Yang is playing mixed and doubles, he was knocked out of mixed in the second round (ie. the round before the quarters) by Lili Zhou and Arnold Setiadi. Particularly impressive pairs, in my eyes, included the Todts, Stanley Wo/Daphne Ng, and of course, Halim Haryoto+partner (De Pauw?) I noticed a lot of strong male players, but coupled with much weaker female partners. As expected, most of these pairs were out by the end of the second round.
I bet Kwun took some pictures of the draw, so he can fill us in more.

With whom Mike playing in mix and double? if his partner is weak, he should ask her to set aside and just play one against two(lili and arnold), I am sure he will prevail. He probably tried to save some energy for his double matches because I know he wont be easy to beat and he will try everything to win.

Good to know that. So every games will have umpire and line judge? wow !! this is so cool, so there wont be any bad call, score cheating etc, every player will focus on the game. It appeared first rounds featured one umpire who kept score and occasionally watched for illegal serves. Second rounds and quarters featured one umpire for scoring (he/she also made line calls on his/her side of the court) and a serving judge seated on the opposite side (he/she would make line calls on that side)

monto,
thanks for the quick updates on all the matches as we don't know where to find any link to see the results...:p Wow, must be quite exciting up in NorCal...yah, i'm sure Kwun will post some tournament pics...
BTW, how was the attendance at the club, was it full or half-full..
BTW, do you know the result of the 2 ex-national pro WD players : Johanne Lee and Yun(Grace) Peng? I'm sure they have advanced all the way to the QF or SF round..
Hmm, looks like Daphne Ng has a new XD pair, as last time i saw her play with another player here at the recent US Nationals. I remember she really can pack a punch with her strokes, a hard hitter.
Halim Heryanto's partner is Angeline De Pauw and both are former PBSI/Pelatnas(Indonesian national players). They *should* go all the way to the Final and win the XD event. But anything can happen..
Anyways, please keep us updated for tomorrow's and Sunday's matches, if you happen to go again...
ok guys. after a long evening of badminton watching and picture taking. i came home with more than 400 pics.. it was very exciting. matches are of very high caliber. i will try to write a report later, but here are the results from tonight's matches. hope they will be legible...
picture will be coming soon. i have to sort through them first.
ok. here comes the pictures.. i quickly culled down to around 50 of them. sorry the images will have to be small to save space and bandwidth.
enjoy!
so after the badminton tonight, Peter and I, and a few friends of his from Vancouver went out for dinner. his friends includes this couple, and also two players from Vancouver, Helen Yuen and Francesca Setiadi. Francesca used to be a national junior in Indonesia and a friend of Halim and Halim's partner Angeline De Pauw.
dinner was late and everybody was exhausted. so while dinner was good and filling, we all headed back to our home/hotel immediately afterwards.
some of the photos turned out pretty well. better than i expected, actually. i think i should have taken more pics of the gym and the spectators. but i was too engrossed in the action. i will definitely remember to do that tomorrow.

Neither doubles draws have begun yet, as they start later today, so I'll be sure to watch out for Lee/Peng now that you mention it.
I arrived at 3pm, with play having begun at 1pm, and the event was very sparsely attended--just players and a few family members/friends. As the day continued, however, there were more and more spectators. After 7pm, either because folks were done with dinner or they were waiting for the mixed action to start, I'd estimate maybe another 50-100 people trickled in.

Kwun,
as always, thanks for the pics and your info of the after-tourney dinner..Hmm, can anyone identify who the players are in the pics?? I know some of them, but not all of them, thx in advance:p ..I noticed Daphne Ng did a semi-jump smash and looked like her right ankle was abt to land the wrong way:p ; noticed also her partner, who is quite huge in physique, at least from the back reminds me of our BC member Dinkalot, hehe;)...Noticed also there's another photographer in the midst of the action; btw, who is he??..
Anyways, looking fw to more pics and reviews for the rest of the weekend actions..:)

Just got back from the second action-packed day... so much took place, I should have taken notes!
Mens and women's doubles consumed the morning before the MD/WD/XD quarters commenced around lunchtime. MD took on an ABCD drop format. Harim teamed up with Eric Go for MD and as ctjcad mentioned above, Angeline De Pauw for XD. All Harim's matches had at least three or four video cameras rolling. Actually I also saw a professional cameraman for a few hours in the morning, possibly for TV news coverage? The MD draw was filled with young guns, with Nicholas Jinadasa/Ba Su outdueling Mike Yang/Jinsong Guo in the semifinal. Harim/Go matched up against Daniel Gouw/Wei Qin Zi in the other semi. Go and Harim definitely lacked that unspoken 'connection' necessary for fluid play, although that might be expected with Go being a singles specialist. A few miscommunication miscues over shots and court coverage allowed Gouw/Zi to score a few points early before Halim's serve returns turned the match around in their favor. Not only was his serve return superb, but on drives and lifts, his ability to hold his shots completely threw off the Gouw/Zi pair several times. I rarely see players of this caliber fall for these disguised shots, much less in doubles! As for the second semi, Yang/Guo took an early lead before Jinadasa/Su charged back to tie it, at 14 all, before winning the set. The second set was a wash, as the Jinadasa/Su pair played more confidently and Yang made a few short serve errors.
monto

MS featured more young guns. Go dispatched Radu Milesvchi with ease in one semi, while Wei Qin Zi took out Andrew Todt in the other. I thought I was watching doubles matches with these big hitters, as they smashed without abandon, with much energy to spare! I hope Kwun got some good jump smash pictures, as there were plenty of opportunities. One observation, Go was the only one of the four to serve consistently short and backhanded, a la most elite international MS players on the circuit.
XD featured Eva Lee/Eric Go dispatching of Gouw/Jennifer Coleman in one semi, and Harim/De Pauw taking out Christopher Ngu/Yun Peng in the other. Ngu/Peng played doubles rotation (they had just beaten another doubles rotation-utilizing pair in Lili Zhou/Arnold Setiadi in the quarters), and were hanging tight with Harim/De Pauw with De Pauw making several uncharacteristic mistakes in the first set. Harim took over during the second set, however, following up several attacks up to the net to ensure the point. The XD championship match will be played first tomorrow, and with Go lacking that same partnership 'bond' with Lee (they played representative of what they were, top singles players mashed together, with the whole less than the sum of its parts) as he lacked with Harim in the MD, I don't think Harim/De Pauw will have much trouble tomorrow.

I left summarizing the women's action for the end because they were really the highlights of the tournament in terms of scintillating and highly contested play. I didn't count up the actual numbers from the USAB website, but I heard someone mention 9 of the nation's top 10 ladies players were in attendance.
In WS, the bottom half of the draw was dominated by Lili Zhou, as she sailed through into the finals after allowing just 2 points (11-1, 11-1) in her semi match versus Jamie Subandhi. The upper half semi featured #1 seed Eva Lee against #3/4 Lauren Todt. The two had already played one another in the morning session in a hard fought three set WD round-robin (World Cup style) match, but more on that later. This was one of the most evenly matched and thus exciting matches of the day, although it didn't start out as such, with Todt taking the first set with litheness and well-positioned drop shots at 11-3. It was quite a joy to see the grace of singles play after the MS draw featured power play instead. Lee fought back in the second, however, preying on Todt's backhand and with much improved net play, with a score of 11-2. Lee appeared poised to continue and take the third set as she built a lead of 6-2 before Todt roared back to take the lead at 8-7. Back and forth play ensued, with a large cheering crowd having gathered by now, aware of the third-set finality. Lee eventually managed a 10-9 lead, serving for the match before some deep backhand drives won Todt her serve back. Tying the score at 10-all, Todt would eventually win 13-11 (IIRC), upsetting the #1 seed, to set up a coach vs student championship match of Zhou vs Todt.
The WD semis were almost as exciting, with Zhou/Todt taking on De Pauw/Mona Santoso in one semi, and Yun Peng/Johannah Lee encountering Eva Lee/Jennifer Coleman in the other. I was watching the first semi as Peng/Lee appeared to be dispatching Lee/Coleman with ease, with another case of singles specialists mashed together. The Zhou/Todt vs De Pauw/Santoso match was evenly played until at 5-4, Santoso sprained her right ankle diving for a drop shot in the alley. The referee allowed a few minutes stretching and massage, along with an ankle wrap, but it appeared Santoso might be done as she stood up gingerly. Well, this certainly wasn't the case, as she smashed and moved with ease. De Pauw/Santoso would take it in straight sets, with Todt unable to quite keep up with the play of the other three, partly being outmatched by the abundant experience/ability of ex-national talent surrounding her, and partly by exhaustion, having endured a three set WS semifinal less than an hour ago.
Few final observations. Tonight's play drew quite a few more spectators than yesterday, perhaps 100-200 in all? Lots of children too, which bodes well for the next generation of talent :)
Sally played and won the senior WD draw--there were only two participanting teams, so the one match was the championship :) Sally plays again tomorrow in the senior XD draw with Jinsong Guo, with a bit more competion, as there are three teams in that flight.

monto, thanks again for the review and recaps...Yes, i can see that it's been organized very well..Wow, looks like the actions were more exciting today the QF/SF rounds, a lot of great matches...:)
Anyways, just some comments after reading your posts for each event:
XD, not surprise to see Halim and Angie cruise all the way..They are definitely a class above anyone else playing in the XD event..
MD, tomorrow's Final between Halim/Go and Ba Su/Nick should be interesting, but i will expect the former to win it..
WD, i think this will be one of the most interesting event to watch...wow, 2 Indonesians will be facing 2 ex-nationals from CHN and KOR...Too bad Mona sprained her ankle, as eventhough she was able to play thru it, i'm sure tomorrow/today it will be quite sore and swollen...Good luck to them..
BTW, do you know if Mona Santoso was an ex-Indonesian national player..
MS, this is also an interesting match..I've never saw or heard of Wei Qin Zi before, but by the current result and him going all the way to the Final, i'm sure he's pretty talented..Should be interesting..
WS, this must be the surprise of the event so far, although both Lauren and Eva are in the national team and both are equally skilled. Must be a pretty good match also as it went to rubber set...But tomorrow, i think the coach will win..;)
As for the senior draws, which included Sally, if i'm not mistaken Viper2005 is playing in it also...not sure though?!?!..
Anyways, thx again and i'm looking fw to Kwun's newer pics.. :)

That would be Elena Dumitriu, she's quit thin, making it seem she's taller. She's about 6 feet I'd guess. She looks even taller in the picture because her partner, Nancy Lan, in the foreground is really short, in the low-5ft range.

You mentioned not knowing Wei Qin Zi, so he's shown in the second from last pic, the lefty in the black polo shirt stretched out, battling Andrew Todt. He's also in the second from last pic in Kwun's first set of attachments, in the gray shirt, right before Daphne Ng jumpsmashing.
By the way, I noticed he was wearing several Guangdong Tactics shirts, so perhaps this bodes well for those BCers going abroad to train for the summer? ;) Zi also appears to train at UBC, with his name appearing on their website as part of the 'elite team'.

Halim with partners De Pauw and Go took XD and MD in convincing fashion. XD score of 9 and 2, MD score of 1 and 3 (or thereabouts). MD was actually quite evenly matched, once Su/Jinadasa managed to get the rally going, but more often then not, their serves were either errant or pounced on, and thus ended.
MS was also a wash, with Go prevailing over Zi without allowing a point. Zi managed some good rallies, but once behind, he forced several unforced errors with smashes and drives out of bounds or into the net. The crowd was appreciative and gave one of the loudest and longest ovations of the day after Go's performance.
WS had Zhou taking Todt out 0 and 5, with Zhou effortless dominating.
WD was the most hotly contested, with De Pauw/Santoso winning 10 and 6 (or therabouts) over Peng/Lee. Several rallies lasted at least 20 shots. Santoso showed no signs of slowing down and didn't have the ankle brace on. Lee was the weakest of the four, with Peng covering Lee's side defensively several times. The losing pair just couldn't keep up, both being several years older, and steps slower, than the victors.
Sally took senior XD after yesterday's senior WD victory.
Random observations...
...Volunteer linesmen, especially one lady judging the baselines in the WD final, were shaky with their calls. If I knew they were taking volunteers from the crowd, I would've taken the opportunity to help, but alas, several unsure and overturned line calls were made, with Santoso/De Pauw visibly upset.
...Halim gave the crowd a show, smiling often and posing for dozens of photos after each victory. During the MD match, he faked the serving motion and baited Ba Su into moving before hitting the shuttle, evoking laughter from the crowd--but subtly, also an indication of the serving judge not doing his job ;)
...Two prize packages were giving out after each match, as the winners of each match hit high clears into the crowd. The spectator who caught the shuttle won a prize of Yonex bag, Isometric 75MF, Yonex baseball cap, Yonex water bottle and a few more more goodies. Needless the say, this got the crowd out of their seats. After these 10 prizes were given out, Mike Yang hit another clear, this time with the prize being a Jackie Chan-autographed racket/bag.

The only result that was a bit surprising to me is the WD event. I was a bit surprise by the straight sets victory from Angelina and Mona; esp. didn't expect both Grace/Johanna to lose in straight sets. Oh come on now, one or two levels above Grace and Johannah? That's a very bold statement. Both Grace and Johannah played at the professional level and were ranked in the Top 10 in the world at one time. To say another player is one or two levels above that, I do not think is very accurate. Would you not agree? Besides, I gotta stick up for my fellow SGVBCers. :p :D

hehe, sure...:) ..actually what i was referring to "close-up" shots/pics, which you actually had a few, are in your post #64(pics #15, 17, 18 & 20 of Helen Yuen and her partner Mike). And post #77(pics #1, 9, 10, 11, 14, 16, 17, 20& 28). And above 1st pic of Lily Zhou..IMO, those are more of a 3/4, half-body shots/pics..
yeah. she forced a half court lift and just went for it with all her emotions.
she is awesome. very expressive player. you will know right away if she is mad or if she is happy. now only if she'd wear a color other than green! it make horrible photographs as it blend right into the wall color!
well, that pic alone probably is your "winning pic" in the whole tournament...what a shot..;):)...she better show those emotions, she is afterall a former national team player..hehe:p  :)

Are you talking about current form or something else? J. Lee was once top WS in Korea. And I don't think Indo has very good WD in the last 10 years.
Hi Chris,
She used to be in PELATNAS but i heard she has retired from it recently (since her age is 24 now). I heard she has a very strong backhand smash just like guys. She is definitely one or two level above players like Johana Lee & Grace Peng.
can anybody guess who this lady in green is?

no comment on the tomboy part. but she definitely smashes like a guy. i think she can smash harder than most guys i know. Angie and Mona have way more fire power than Grace/Johannah.
talking about smashing. when i watched Ba Su / N. Jinadasa play against Mike/Ginsong, i thought Ba had a really strong smash. but when they play against Halim/E.Go, Ba looked weak in comparison!

they did. there are short portable ones that have 3 rows of seating. they have 4 of them that lines both sides of the court. it is hard to see in the pics as the audience are sitting on them.
for next year, i think they can get taller ones that goes higher up. they won't have space on the wall side, but will have no problem on the more opened sides.
they do have a cafe. but the view is quite far from the action.

hmm, i see...yah, i concur with the idea of having taller seating next time around, for 2 reasons:
1. so people have better seating, rather than standing up or sitting on the floor
2. and to accommodate for more spectators/seating, in a way, more people will come..
..regarding for having space for those, i think they have the space for them(from the pics of GGBC) & can reserve several courts for the last 3 days of competition or so..of course, it'll take a few more work to put them up, but i'm sure they have enough of manpower..;) :)

I have several opportunities to ask the pro stringers during the tournament. Here is a summary of what they do:
(1) no pre-weaving the main and cross strings
(2) main string tension = cross string tension
(3) all racquets are two-piece string job with four knots.
(4) use awl to get cross string through shared grommets
The stringing machine used is the electronic version from Yonex.

yeah. i agree. in fact, that's one of the suggestions i sent to Mike/Sally, taller seating and more space between spectators and court. to their defense though, they did buy a few of them, but i think the event was so successful they probably didn't expect so many ppl to show up!

Hmm, i see...Wow, that's a wonderful news and gesture by UCB, if UCB is willing to sponsor next yr's tournament again. I know it's not a "big" tournament, but IMO, sponsoring an event like this will benefit the sport in the long run, esp. in the Bay area....On that note, who knows, perhaps(just suggesting, not recommending them to do so) UCB can help purchase or rent those taller seatings??.. :p ;)

The Chairman of United Commercial Bank is Mr. Tommy Wu. He is a very nice man. His wife Jessa Wu is a member and a good friend of ours.
About the seating. I did ask Mike about that and he gave me some sensible answers.
1./ if we have higher bleachers, the weight of the people may have adverse impact and effect on our floors. Our floors are very expensive and we want to take good care of them.
2./ With higher bleachers there is a risk of people toppling over. Just on the 3 tiers people were standing up in excitement sometimes and of course when grabbing those birdies that the players hit out. I dont' even know how people can get down or up to seat themselves if there are like 6 tiers. I remember at one event in HKG coliseum, Andy Lau threw a gift to the upper tiers and someone caught it but fell over the safety bar and toppled to his death. Since then, we are not allowed to even throw things to the front seats.
3./ The higher the bleacher the wider space it needs on the bottom. We don't have that kind of space on the sides of our gym.
4./ We have no storage space once the games are done.
Mike has spent alot of time to think what is the best way since he is very conscious of everything being of standard but also cost effective. Wanting everyone the chance to be spectator he didn't want to charge for this tournament. Bleachers are very expensive and to rent the charges are even higher. We too were surprised of the generous number of such a responsive crowd. As we all know even the world championships didn't pull in full capacity at Anaheim on the finals day. Thomas / Uber in Japan was considered sparse by my concert experience much to my surprise. I've never sang to so little people! In HKG QE stadium only seats capacity of 2000 or so and on the last day of a 6 star World champion complete roster tournament, there were still seats available. Most of the best seating was VIP so the capacity was quite little. So comparatively, GGBC did really well, and the seating was quite adequate I thought because most people were actually seated or standing. In most of the touranments I see all over Bay Area EVERYone was sitting on the floor, including me, at the last tourney I entered at Gunn High. Mike didn't want that so he did the best he could. The 2 bleachers he got was already much over his budget and it was a panic because one of the seats arrived quite damaged so Frank had to punt and pound to make it useable and they sent another but arrived after the tournament sooo........ it's ain't easy!!!
Sally
thanks Sally for the explanation!
the seating as it stands is already is major improvement to the floor sitting arrangement of other tournaments. i think most audience appreciate the comfort of sitting there instead of the floor, or standing up all day. the seating contribute their part to the success of the GGBC Open. we are just expressing what could make it more attractive. however, if it is infeasible to do, it is totally understandable! :)

Appreciate for the explanation Sally-some of Sally's post snipped for brevity; and want to add a few comments from myself. Hope the GGBC mgt won't mind..:p
1./ if we have higher bleachers, the weight of the people may have adverse impact and effect on our floors. Our floors are very expensive and we want to take good care of them.
understandable..:)
Since then, we are not allowed to even throw things to the front seats.
understandable also..Hmm, since you mentioned about people throwing items into the stands, i remember(i'm sure you do also) during last yr's World Championship also(i believe during the SF or Finals), there were cheerleaders shooting t-shirts into the crowd, even shooting them as high as the upper tier seating..
3./ The higher the bleacher the wider space it needs on the bottom. We don't have that kind of space on the sides of our gym.
hmm, i see...I guess in terms of the club having multi-function incl. as a "spectator hall", for whatever reason(s) the mgt was never really able to provide a spectator seating area, in case, they may have a tournament like these. On that note, i'm not sure if other bay area badminton clubs have these or not?!?!Can Kwun or anyone else confirm on this??..Because in SoCal, the only full-time badminton club which has a spectator seating area is OCBC. Thus they are able to hold smaller to IBF-sanctioned U.S. Open tournaments...anyways, i understand..
4./ We have no storage space once the games are done.
Understandable...But how abt renting, which i know can be quite expensive..
The 2 bleachers he got was already much over his budget and it was a panic because one of the seats arrived quite damaged so Frank had to punt and pound to make it useable and they sent another but arrived after the tournament sooo........ it's ain't easy!!!
Hmm, i see...Anyways, for the first "big" tournament being held @ GGBC, i can say from looking at the picture, it was a big success and I'm sure it was a very successful event. Despite the free admission and all...

Concur also with Kwun...Anyhoo, pardon for our(my) "suggestions", hope Sally and the GGBC mgt won't mind us(me) expressing them. It's just such *a small* issue which, at least myself (who don't know the real story), saw as an area for a possible "improvement" for future tourney @ GGBC... ;) :)
After reading this thread.. darn i miss alot. Hope i can visit GGBC one day and see the folks there.Thumbs up to the organisers, kwun and the rest who help out. Congrats for having a successful event!

>>YES I SAW THAT AS WELL AND REALLY WANT TO BUY THE T-SHIRT GUNS ACTUALLY BUT THE SEATING IN ANAHEIM WAS NOT STEEP AT ALL. I SAT IN THE LAST ROW ON THE FIRST DAY AND IT WAS ROOMY AND NOT STEEP. IF WE HAVE A 6 TIER ALUMINUM BLEACHER IT WILL BE QUITE STEEP, AND I WOULD FIND, RATHER UNSTABLE.
Because in SoCal, the only full-time badminton club which has a spectator seating area is OCBC. Thus they are able to hold smaller to IBF-sanctioned U.S. Open tournaments...anyways, i understand..
>>THERE ARE SOME BLEACHERS LIKE SCHOOL GYM BLEACHERS AND THE ONES AT OCBC THAT CAN BE PUSHED FLAT AGAINST THE WALL. THOSE HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED IF YOU OWN THE BUILDING AND CAN PUT THOSE IN THE BLUE PRINTS FROM DRAWING BOARD STAGE. THOSE ARE GREAT. THEY ARE NOT STEEP, MULTI SEATING AND CAN PROVIDE FUNCTIONAL USE FOR THE FLOOR IF THEY ARE PUT AWAY BUT ONCE PULLED OUT WILL TAKE UP ALOT OF ROOM.

WE HOPE WE WILL HAVE THAT PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE IF WE DO, THAT MEANS BADMINTON WILL ACHIEVE IT'S POPULARITY LEVEL!

hmm, i see. Sorry, i didn't know abt the overall bldg size of GGBC or how much space it has(i had to rely only on the pics:p)..oh, i just remember, there's a teen recreational center here near my house, which has 2 types of spectator bench seating:a 3-4 tier seating area that is not high(i believe it's fixed though) as well as a taller seating area. They're not really the same as the ones @ OCBC, but quite sufficient. The gym is used for many different sports: basketball, volleyball as well as badminton. If i have a chance, i'll take a pic of the place and show those bench-seating to you guys...

OT: Chris, you keep using the "" icon in wrong places. = sarcastic. In general, it's a negative connotation and I know you. You are nice guy. So unless you are being negative, I suggest you not use "". :)
And if you are trying to be funny, sorry, I didn't see it. :p :D :D :D

hehe, no problem, i'm not trying to be sarcastic/or being in a negative way....i use the rolleyes icon(at least in here), eventhough it's noted as (sarcastic), to show as one is "to wonder/wondering", at least to me(as i don't know what's the standard/reg. icon for "sarcastic" and "wondering/to wonder")...erm, like for example this post #12 by LazyBuddy http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=396297#post396297...mu guess he put that icon to show that he's "wondering", and not being sarcastic..hehe:p;)

Not to butt in or anything, but I always kind of thought the icon was a kind of a SHYYY kind of expression, like "hmmm... whatdayathink"? kind of look? Yah.. I kind of took it as "wondering" too. Just giving my 2 bits. Sorry for being intrusive...

Hmm, so he's playing for France now heh??..Or is that another sibling??Cos last time i saw her brother under the same name, De Pauw, played thru live web broadcast; I believe was last yr or 2 yrs ago @ the Swiss Open; he was playing MS for Swiss..?!?!..
BTW, i noticed this particular link of GGBC has attracted other BCers who are outside the American continent(ie. ants, fabcargo). Considering GGBC is still new(unlike OCBC) and located in the U.S...Must be the popularity of our GGSally..hehe;)

OK, as promised and requested, here are some pics of the semi-portable seating bench @ a teen center gymnasium. Sorry, didn't find out who is the manufacturer. Noticed in one of the pic, the seating bench actually has wheels at the front.
I took a quick measurement, and it's about +/- 7 feet in depth. And the last 2 pics are the taller seating benches, which never opened during badminton time.
ok. after a few weeks of sorting and processing, Weng and I have put all our good pics from the GGBC Open 2006 online. they can be found in our new website:
www.16feathers.com.
the site was created as a couple of players have asked us for prints. and we found this service that will let us host our pics, and then prints and mail order out for us for a nominal cost. we hope we can start to provide such a service to other local tournaments in the future.
enjoy!

Hello CT,
I'm so sorry I never got back to you regarding the benches for so long. It was so thoughtful of you to go and take photos of them. GGBC has been sooo busy and we don't have enough arms and legs to handle the people at nights.
Thank you for the photos and they look great and of course they would be so ideal but when they are pulled down they take alot of room and we wouldn't be able to walk. Aside from that they cost of those are quite enormous and we don't have that kind of budget as of yet since we are still quite young. But they look great and we will certainly take those into consideration. Thank you.

Sally,
no problem, i understand you guys are very2 busy..;)
Sure, i just took them and post them so you guys can see; i thought those are the minimal size...Actually i recently went to another sports event and saw similar benches that go up to 8 tiers; now, those are space-eaters and probably quite expensive.

yeah. the printed photos will not have the watermarks.
