that wushu guy (can't remember his name) definitely deserved to win it, i think he took gold at the last world championships, or was it silver?

and for swimming, it must have been daniel bego, amazing performance by him in the world junior championships, collecting a silver and maybe a bronze, smashing a few national records along the way. anyways, what was important was that he won malaysia's first international swimming medals, so a worthy winner.

Green light for Beryno and Chun Seang to compete in China Open

PETALING JAYA: Chief coach Rashid Sidek’s request for his Project 2010-12 players to compete in major Open tournaments has finally been approved after several failed attempts.

For a start, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), who want their juniors to step up to the fore, have named two singles players – Beryno Wong Jiann Tze (pic) and Tan Chun Seang – for the China Open in Guangzhou (Oct 17-22).

Besides competing in the Singapore and Thailand Opens, the China Open is the biggest competitive tournaments for the juniors.

The 20-year-old Beryno was picked for his good showing in the Malaysian Open this year when he went down fighting to Lin Dan of China in the third round while Chun Seang is the highest ranked player among the juniors – 111th in the world.

Chun Seang’s participation, however, depends on how quickly he can recover from a muscle tear in his left hand, an injury he picked up during training last week. Rashid will name a replacement if he cannot make it.

Rashid expects the players to benefit from the exposure of playing in the China Open.

“The BAM have approved only two but it is still a good start for my players,” said Rashid.

“If we do not start now, it will be difficult for us to narrow the gap between the juniors and seniors in the team.

“Previously, the juniors could not go for Open tournaments because of budget constraints and could only play in the satellite tournaments. But this group of players are being geared for the 2012 Olympic Games and they need more challenging competitions.

“This opportunity will help the players to be more daring on court. They will get used to playing against stronger opponents. With more exposure at the highest level, it will turn them into ‘thinking’ players eventually.”

Beryno, who was promoted from the state training centre in Sabah last year, was ecstatic.

“I am glad that BAM are sending us out for big tournaments. Playing in China, where the best players in the world are produced, will indeed be a good experience for me,” said Beryno.

“I will be more than satisfied if I can give my opponents a run for their money,” added the 2003 Under-18 National Grand Prix Final’s runner-up.

The BAM are sending the Asian Games-bound players to both the back-to-back Japan and China Opens.

Badminton: All five doubles pairs safely through
PETALING JAYA: The top two Malaysian doubles pairs of Koo Kien Keat-Chan Chong Ming and Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah were far from impressive in their opening matches of the China Open badminton championships in Guangzhou yesterday.
Both pairs, appearing in their first tournament since the World Championships in Madrid last month, had to come back from one game down to beat their respective opponents to book a place in the last 16.
Kien Keat-Chong Ming defeated Thailand’s Prapakamol Sudket-Patapol Ngernsrisuk 17-21, 21-18, 23-21 to set up a second round meeting with China’s Xia Xuanze-Xu Chen while Tan Fook-Wan Wah battled hard to beat Daniel Shirley-John Gordon of New Zealand 15-21, 21-18, 21-8.
Three other Malaysian pairs also made it to the second round.
Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Latif overcame China’s scratch pair of Zheng Bo-Guo Zhendong 14-21, 21-16, 21-15. They will face fellow Malaysians Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong, who beat Leong Kin Fai-Lam Chi Man of Macau 21-12, 21-19.
Former national players Chew Choon Eng-Hong Chieng Hun earned themselves a second round meeting against Indonesians Yulianto Alven-Hadiyanto Luluk after beating Hendri Saputra-Hendra Wijaya of Singapore 19-21, 21-16, 21-17.
Kuan Beng Hong is the only Malaysian survivor in the men’s singles competition. The Doha Asian Games bound-shuttler beat fellow Malaysian Pei Wei Chung 21-13, 21-11 but will find it tough in the third round today. He faces China’s up-and-coming player Chen Jin.
Malaysian junior Tan Chun Seang fell in the second round, losing 22-24, 16-21 to China’s Chen Hong.
World Championships mixed doubles bronze medallists Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty had it easy in their opening match, beating Hong Kong’s Wong Shu Ki-Fung Yin 21-5, 21-12.

Mohd Arif, Lydia lead the charge in world tourney

By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s future crop of badminton talent will face their biggest test in the World Junior Championships, which will be held in Incheon, South Korea, from Nov 2-11.
Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia picked 13 players from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) to compete in the individual and mixed team events.
Asian Junior Championships singles medallists Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Lydia Cheah will lead the Malaysian challenge in the boys’ and girls’ singles events respectively.
The others for the boys’ singles are Lim Fang Yang, Lok Chong Chieh and Teo Kok Siang.
Arif, winner of the national schools (MSSM) Under-18 title and a semi-finalist in the Asian Junior Championships this year, has a double shot at glory. The 17-year-old younger brother of current national doubles player Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif will seek to uphold Malaysia’s strong tradition in the doubles in a partnership with Vountus Indra Mawan Saniru. The pair won the MSSM championships and were runners-up in the Asian Juniors.
The second Malaysian boys’ pair in the World Juniors are Lim Khim Wah-Mak Hee Chun.
The favourites for the boys’ doubles title are South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Cho Gun-woo, who won the Asian Juniors crown.
Malaysia also have high hopes on the mixed doubles pair of Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei to spring a surprise in the World Juniors. They finished as the runners-up in the Asian Juniors.
Yong-dae, who has turned out to be a world-class player for South Korea, is also looking good to win the mixed doubles title with Yoo Hyun-young.
Lydia is another player who could make a breakthrough for Malaysia in the World Juniors. She was the first Malaysian to reach the girls’ singles final in the Asian Juniors and beat top Chinese player Wang Yihan to help the country qualify for the final of the team competition.
The World Juniors will provide the lanky Lydia a good chance to create history again. The others down for the girls’ singles are Tee Jing Yi, Stephanie Shalini and Vivian Khoo.
The current batch of BJSS players train under Chinese coach Zhao Kejian.
At the last World Juniors in Vancouver two years ago, Malaysia chalked up their best finish.
They finished fifth in the mixed team competition and Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong emerged with the standout performance, winning the boys’ doubles title for Malaysia for the first time since 1998.
Amelia Anscelly is the only member of the team from the Vancouver campaign who is still eligible to play in the World Juniors.
The BAM secretary, Gangga Rao, said that Malaysia did well to reach three individual finals in the Asian Juniors.
The players are currently in Bangkok for a satellite meet. The draw for the team competition will be made today.

Future looks gloomy in men’s singles
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's future in badminton, especially in the men's singles, looks gloomy as indicated in the outcome of the World Junior Championships, which ended in Incheon on Saturday.
None of the Malaysians – Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Lim Fang Yang, Teo Kok Siang and Lok Chong Chieh – cleared the early rounds.
China, South Korea and Indonesia had representatives in the boys' singles semi-finals with Korean Han Ji-hoon emerging as the champion, beating Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto, the son of former world champion Icuk, in the final.
The players, who did not show great promise at the World Juniors, will still be promoted to the Project 2010-12 under the charge of Rashid Sidek after they complete their Form Five studies at the end of the year.
In fact, the current batch of players under Rashid has yet to make any breakthrough in Open tournaments.
Although the process of churning out top players will take time, national chief coach Yap Kim Hock said that he was concerned with the quality of the singles players.
“Currently, our pool of men's singles players is small. We do not see many youngsters challenging the seniors we now have. And in this recent World Juniors, we find Malaysia doing better in the doubles than in the singles,” said Kim Hock.
“I will propose to our management and Rashid to release several potential players to the national team by end of the year. We need more players to be exposed at the higher level of competition.”
At the World Juniors, Malaysia's top performers were boys' doubles bronze medallists Lim Khim Wah-Mak Hee Chun. They went down to eventual champions Lee Yong-dae-Cho Gun-woo of South Korea in the semi-finals.
The hope was also high on second seed Lydia Cheah in the girls' singles but she crashed out in the fourth round.
The 16-year-old lanky shuttler, however, is talented and with time, she is set to be Malaysia's pride.
Meanwhile, South Korea, who won three of the five titles – boys' singles and doubles and the mixed doubles – showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Juniors under the microscope at KL Open
KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes will be on the promising juniors in the ongoing Kuala Lumpur Open as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) plan to bring in new faces into their elite squad.
The BAM will hold their council meeting on Dec 30 in Johor to review and finalise a new coaching and training set-up.
It is likely that some of the players in the Project 2010-12 under Rashid Sidek will be promoted to the national team while some in the elite squad will be dropped.
All of Rashid's charges led by Tan Chun Seang are currently competing in the KL Open at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) in Cheras. The Bukit Jalil Sports School's (BJSS) players are also in the fray in the Division Two events.
National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said that he would monitor the performances of the juniors in the tournament.
“It is the last tournament for the year and also for most of the players. Some of the players will get a chance to impress the selectors. We (the coaches) will monitor their progress,” said Rexy.
The KL Open is the last and second leg of the National Grand Prix Circuit. The GP Finals will be held in February.

Lim Kenn provides the only cheer for Project 2010-12 camp

KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Lim Kenn was the only bright spark for the Project 2010-12 camp in the Kuala Lumpur Open when he reached the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) here yesterday.

The 19-year-old Lim Kenn went the distance to beat teammate Tan Chun Seang 21-10, 13-21, 21-17 in the second round to set up a match against second seed Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

Hafiz chalked up a hard-fought 21-14, 21-18 win over Lim Kenn’s teammate Beryno Wong.

Credit must also be given to Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren for making it difficult for two national players – K. Yogendran and James Chua. After a great start, Wei Feng ran out of steam, losing to Yogendran 21-23, 21-12, 8-21 while Daren kept pace with James throughout the match before going down 16-21, 19-21.

In the quarter-finals today, Yogendran will take on top seed Lee Chong Wei while James will play against Kuan Beng Hong.

Bukit Jalil Sports School’s (BJSS) Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Chan Kwong Beng showed their potential, giving the senior players a run for their money.

Arif, who won the boys’ Under-18 title in the 100 Plus National Junior Circuit in Ipoh on Saturday, kept Wong Choong Hann longer on the court before losing 21-18, 10-21, 7-21 while Kwong Beng gave Beng Hong a scare before going down 16-21, 21-14, 14-21.

Choong Hann will take on Yeoh Kay Bin in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Lydia Cheah stayed on track in her bid to win her first senior Open title when she knocked out Pahang’s Tan Sin Lan to set up a match against Stephanie Shalini. The winner will take on second seed Julia Wong.

Badminton: Rashid’s New Year wishes
By RAJES PAUL

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/12/22/sports/s_pg78rashid.jpg

KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Rashid Sidek (pic) hopes that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) can grant him two wishes in his plans for his Project 2010-12 squad next year.

He wants the national back-up players to be considered for the SEA Games in Thailand next December. And he also hopes that his charges will get to spar with the seniors on a regular basis.

Rashid said that his main goal was to get the second echelon of players narrow the gap in standard with the seniors.

“I have been coaching the team for more than a year now. It is time to give them a challenging task. The SEA Games will be an ideal platform for them to start winning honours for the country,” said Rashid.

Malaysia have always relied on a senior side to carry the challenges in the biennial Games, which is considered the lowest tournament among the majors for the badminton players.

“We should start to give the second stringers the chance to represent Malaysia in the SEA Games. It will prepare them for the more challenging ones ahead,” said Rashid.

“It will also motivate the back-up shuttlers to outdo each other in the fight to win places to represent the country. It will be a good incentive.”

For the last few months, the seniors have had their training base in Bukit Jalil while the back-up squad are still at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.

Despite the many promises, joint training sessions for the seniors and back-up players have yet to take place.

“The joint training session is crucial. If both sides do not come together, the gap of standard will always exist and the progress of the youngsters is always retarded,” said Rashid.

“Thus far, only our doubles players had trained with the seniors on several occasions because coach Rexy (Mainaky) wanted it. The singles players hardly got the chance.

“All I'm asking for is joint training sessions or match practices at least once a week or even once every fortnight. This practice will bring great benefit to our players and I hope that the BAM will make it happen this time.”

On the performances of his charges this year, Rashid said that he was quite satisfied.

“There has been improvement in the quality of their game. Some of the players had won satellite tournaments. But we hope to see their participation in more competitive tournaments next year,” he said.

Lim Kenn emerged as the Sri Lanka Satellite champion while women's singles player Julia Wong bagged two titles at the satellites in Singapore and Indonesia.

“The players may not get to compete in the next year's Super Series because of their low rankings but I hope to get the BAM's approval to send them to second-rung tournaments on the BWF (Badminton World Federation) calendar,” said Rashid.

Plans for the Project squad will be on the agenda of the BAM Council meeting in Johor on Dec 30.

THE PROJECT 2010-12 SQUAD
Men's singles: Chong Wei Feng, Tan Chun Seang, Azrihanif Azahar, Lim Kenn, Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin, Liew Daren, Chong Li Qun, Beryno Wong.
Men's doubles: Au Kok Leong, Khoo Chung Chiat, Goh Ying Jin, Hoon Thien How, Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Razif Latif, Mohd Razif Abdul Rahman, Chan Peng Soon, Chang Han Pin.
Women's singles: Norsyahliza Baharum, Daphne Ng, Julia Wong, Anita Raj Kaur.

They are quite good and have big potential.Kena 'gilap' lagi bakat.Hehe :D I've been to the KL Open Finals and I've watched the men's junior doubles. One pair was aggresive and the other quite reserved (personality-wise).But they played good..a lot of unforced errors though, still need a lot of work :o Nevertheless, I enjoyed their performance;) .Most people were watching the senior doubles between Chan C M-Hoon T H and Fairuz-Lin W F as they played at the same time.I watched both.I have some pics here.Hope the quality is okay :)

Four back-up shuttlers get nod for Malaysian Open

PETALING JAYA: Four national back-up singles players will get the chance to prove their worth in the Malaysian Open Badminton Championships.

The four players who will begin their campaign in the qualifying tournament next Tuesday are Lim Kenn, Tan Chun Seang, Beryno Wong and Liew Daren of the Project 2010-12 squad.

And Lim Kenn is determined to make a breakthrough.

“It is great that I have the chance to compete in the qualifying tournament. I am 21-years-old now but it is not considered young in the world of badminton anymore,” said Lim Kenn, who is ranked 131st in the world.

“It is time to step up and prove my worth in the team. I will give my best shot to make it to the main draw.”

The Malaysian back-up shuttlers are lucky to get to compete in the Malaysian Open because of the absence of many foreign players in the top 100 bracket.

Meanwhile, after being delayed due to problems with downloading information last week, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will release the draw for the Open today.

It seems KBH does not think much of his Juniors.

Despite his so called 'rebound' from his poor form of late, I think he should concentrate on his own progress and future performance rather than make such trivial remarks on paper.

Beng Hong has no fear of the juniors

PETALING JAYA: National men's singles shuttler Kuan Beng Hong is in no rush to be among the world's best. In fact, he's not even thinking about being the country's best.

He knows that none of the back-up players are even close to his standard.

National singles coach Li Mao has targeted Beng Hong to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games but the 24-year-old player is not too worried about missing out. He knows his place in the national team will not be jeopardised.

“My coach (Li Mao) has high hopes. But it is a tall order for me, especially now that I am not very confident about my game,” said Beng Hong.

“But I’m working hard in training. Hopefully, I will be able to achieve a breakthrough in one of three tournaments – the Malaysian Open (Jan 16-21), Korean Open (Jan 23-28) and the All-England (March 6-11). That would help me enter the Olympic qualifying period with more confidence.”

The Olympic qualifying season begins in May.

While Beng Hong is hard-pressed to psyche himself up, the absence of juniors and peers to keep him on his toes is fast becoming another problem.

“I will be back to training even if I do not make the cut for the Olympics. I will be concentrating on other tournaments,” he said.

“It is just unfortunate that there is no pressure from the juniors right now. For the time being, my place in the national team is safe.”

Beng Hong, who is ranked 31st in the world, said there was a big gap in standards between the seniors and the second team.

“It was different when I was in the back-up team. We trained with the seniors and had match practice every week.

“Our back-up players now train on their own. They only get a chance to rub shoulders with the seniors during the local circuit. And last year, we had only two legs of the circuit!

“I’m not looking down on them but their standard is low now,” added Beng Hong.

The back-up singles players under the Project 2010-12 are Chong Wei Feng, Tan Chun Seang, Azrihanif Azahar, Lim Kenn, Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin, Liew Daren, Chong Li Qun and Beryno Wong.

The seniors train in Bukit Jalil while the back-up players are based at the Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

Be Cool Jug8man.. personally i believe the Jrs are playing well. KBH is just expression how he feel. But that is definately not what he have in mind. Probably he knows that the juniours still need to improve. And since now the Jrs sections are running out of coaches... i think they may have some problem to fix at the moment. BAM also need to straighten things out in order to bring the jrs into higher level. But i do sincerely hope they will make some impact this coming MO.

Quick fix not likely to materialise in the men’s singles

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's lack of depth in the men's singles was evident once again in the just concluded Malaysian Open. And even an immediate plan to solve the problem may hit a snag.

Chief coach Yap Kim Hock said that he was waiting for an approval from the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) coaching and training committee to promote players from the Project 2010-12 to the national team.

But the Project's chief coach, Rashid Sidek, prefers to continue coaching the players who have come under his charge since March, 2005.

The BAM will now have to find the best solution to bridge the wide gap in standard between the seniors and juniors.

Said Rashid: “I think that it is best for me to continue coaching these players. I know them very well. The only problem now is that there are no regular sessions for the back-up players to train and spar with the top players in the country.

“But, of course, it is for the BAM to make the decision. We will be having our meeting soon to discuss the matter.”

There are a few options for the BAM to consider.

They could bring in Rashid together with some of his best young players into the national team. And together with Chinese coach Li Mao, Rashid can help in the bid to add more depth to the men's singles department.

Misbun Sidek, who had on many occasions stated his passion to groom youngsters, could be the right man to move to the back-up squad. Misbun now has only one player under his charge in the national team – Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

There are now about 10 players from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), who have completed their Form Five studies, eagerly waiting to join the back-up squad.

Except for a fighting display by veteran Wong Choong Hann in his second-round match against formidable Chinese youngster Chen Jin, the performances of the men's singles shuttlers were a letdown in the Malaysian Open, which ended on Sunday at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium.

The best bet, Lee Chong Wei, failed in his bid to win the title for the fourth consecutive time with an uninspiring performance against China's Bao Chunlai in the quarter-finals.

The lack of fire does not augur well for him in his bid to win the World Championships. No Malaysian has emerged as the champion in the series.

Mohd Hafiz Hashim still has a lot of catching up to do after failing in his first attempt this year to end a losing run against a Chinese player while Kuan Beng Hong was certainly out of depth in his defeat by Chunlai.

None of the back-up shuttlers made it to the main draw but Rashid said: “Some of them, among them Lim Kenn and Chong Wei Feng, gave good fighting displays. There was improvement in their game.”

Lim Kenn went down fighting to Choong Hann in the final round of the qualifying tournament. Wei Feng scored an upset win over Indonesian Jeffer Rosobin but was eliminated by Lim Kenn in the second round.

Today, some of the back-up players will get another chance to prove themselves in the qualifying tournament of the Korean Open. Choong Hann will also have to earn a place in the main draw from the qualifying tournament.

For Chong Wei and Hafiz, they have the tasks to make up for their disappointments in the Malaysian Open. Chong Wei opens his campaign tomorrow in the US$300,000 tournament against Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana while Hafiz will be up against Chinese veteran Chen Hong for the second consecutive time.

Badminton: Rashid set for bigger role

02 Feb 2007
K.M. BOOPATHY (nstsports@nst.com.my)

RASHID Sidek is expected to play a more prominent role in the national senior singles squad following the departure of Chinese coach Li Mao.

Li Mao, who has been coaching the singles shuttlers since 2005, has opted to be South Korea’s coach and this has left a void to fill.

While chief coach Yap Kim Hock confirmed that Li Mao’s assistant Wong Tat Meng will guide the national players for the time being, Rashid could be drafted in to coach the seniors as well.

http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Friday/Sport/20070202091220/rashid.JPG Rashid (picture) currently heads the 2010-2012 Project but a structural revamp allowing his players and the senior team to train together could see the former Olympic bronze medallist help coach the likes of Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choong Hann.

Among Rashid’s players who could be promoted to the senior squad are Tan Chun Seang, Lim Kenn and Liew Darren.

BAM secretary P. Ganga Rao said while it is unlikely that a foreign coach will be hired to replace Li Mao, a player reshuffle is a possibility.

Ganga said that there will be a discussion between Rashid, Tat Meng and Misbun Sidek, who is in charge of Hafiz Hashim, and the players before a solution is reached to overcome the vacuum left by Li Mao.

"There won’t be major changes and Tat Meng will continue with Li Mao’s programme. However, Rashid and Misbun could also make some contributions," said Ganga.

However, given Rashid’s experience as a world class player and his current status as head of the 2010 project squad, he could be the ideal choice to replace Li Mao.

And with Misbun’s forte in developing younger shuttlers, a direct swap of roles with his brother could be possible.

Misbun’s initial efforts on Chong Wei and Choong Hann have helped them to progress rapidly under Li Mao and this is an option which could produce the desired results.

Meanwhile, Tat Meng also took Li Mao’s decision as a blessing in disguise as he faces a bigger challenge as caretaker coach.

"I’ve followed Li Mao’s programme since the beginning and continuity is not a problem. In fact, it also gives me the added challenge to handle the situation alone," said Tat Meng.

This is an opportunity for the local coaches to prove their worth as quality coaches and it is up to Rashid and Tat Meng to grab the initiative.

By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: National back-up women's singles player Julia Wong is set for a big break in her fledging badminton career.

She is among the three players from the Project 2010-2012 squad whose names have been proposed by the chief coach, Rashid Sidek, for the All-England Open in Birmingham from March 8-11.

The others are Tan Chun Seang and Anita Raj Kaur, who are ranked 56th and 58th in the men's and women's world rankings respectively.

Chun Seang and Anita will have to play in the qualifying tournament of the All-England, which is the third leg of the inaugural Super Series. But Julia, who is ranked 20th in the world, is assured of a place in the main draw of 32 players.

While it is the dream of any young player to get the chance to compete in the oldest badminton tournament in the world, Julia said that she was more concerned with maintaining her consistency.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/2/2/sports/p66-julia.JPG
Julia Wong

In the Korean Open last week, she chalked up the biggest win of her career – beating world number six Pi Hongyan of France in the first round. But she was eliminated in the next round by Bulgaria's world number 10 Nedeltcheva Petya.

“After getting a great win, I could not maintain the tempo the following day. I hope it will not happen again,” said Julia.

The 20-year-old Julia is now the national number two behind Malaysian Open runner-up Wong Mew Choo, who is ranked 12th in the world.

Rashid started exposing players from his group to Open tournaments from last year and Julia is the only one who has broken into the top 20 in the world rankings.

Julia also hopes to get a place in the World Championships, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 13-19.

Malaysia can have up to three players if all are ranked among the top 16. Otherwise, two players will represent a country, provided they are placed among the top 32.

“There is a chance for me to qualify if I can maintain my world ranking position. It will not be easy because I have to upset one seeded player each time in a Super Series tournament. It will be tough but this is the challenge I have to face,” said Julia.

Among the tournaments after the All-England offering ranking points to qualify for the World Championships are the Swiss Open (March 13-18), Asian Championships in Johor Baru (April), Singapore Open (May 1-6) and Indonesian Open (May 8-13).

Ahead of the All-England, Julia will feature in the German Open scheduled for Feb 27-March 4. She is also the second seed behind Mew Choo for the National Grand Prix Finals, which will be held in Kuala Terengganu from Feb 8-11.

Badminton: Rashid wants joint training

05 Feb 2007
K.M. Boopathy (boopathy@nstp.com.my)

RASHID Sidek, strongly tipped to take over as the men’s singles coach from Li Mao whose contract is expired, has requested that the national senior squad and the 2010-2012 Project players train together if the BA of Malaysia (BAM) wants results to improve.

Rashid, who currently heads the 2010-2012 Project whose players train at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara, said joint training is the only way he can assume full responsbility as the singles coach.

He says he can concentrate on a few shuttlers from the Project squad and also focus on the seniors, if they train together.

Players like Lim Kenn, Tan Chun Seang and Liew Darren train under Rashid, and they will likely to be joined by Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choong Hann and Kuan Beng Hong when BAM hand (singles) coaching duties to the former Olympic bronze medallist.

Wong Tat Meng is the caretaker coach for the seniors but Rashid’s vast international experience will be invaluable in helping the national shuttlers who are preparing for August’s World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, and the Beijing Olympics next year.

"I have no objections in assuming the responsibilities of a singles coach but the current working order has to change. I cannot abandon the 2010-2012 Project as it will be infair to my players," said Rashid.

"However, joint-training will benefit everyone. The back-up players will give their 100 percent as they can use this opportunity to make a strong impact on the international scene, while the seniors will also receive quality sparring sessions from playing against their younger compatriots.

"We will have a win-win situation. I do not have to take charge of all the 13 players (in joint-training) as Tat Meng can focus on a few players, while Misbun (Sidek) can also take charge of some as presently he only has Hafiz Hashim under him.

"If the current situation persists, it will be very difficult as my players train in Bukit Kiara while the national team do so at Bukit Jalil."

There are seven players — Chong Wei, Choong Hann, Hafiz, Beng Hong, Yeoh Kay Bin, K. Yogendran and James Chua — in the national senior singles, while the Project squad has Lim Kenn, Chun Seang, Liew Darren, Chong Wei Feng, Chong Li Qun and Beryno Wong.

Rashid also coaches women’s singles players Julia Wong, Anita Raj and Norsyahliza Baharum with Tey Siu Bock as his assistant.

Rashid unhappy with ding-dong display
KUALA TERENGGANU: There was one upset pulled of by the men's back-up squad players in the Proton National Grand Prix Finals but for coach Rashid Sidek, the outing was still a big disappointment.
On Thursday, 20-year-old Liew Daren turned the tables on Kuan Beng Hong, who eventually withdrew from the tournament due to fever, in a group match.
But a day after the big win, Liew went down to Bukit Jalil Sports School's (BJSS) Lim Fang Yang.
Besides Liew Daren, the others – Chong Wei Feng, Lim Kenn and Chong Li Qun – were also eliminated from the tournament.
Their performances were inconsistent.
Rashid said he was disappointed with the lack of mental strength among the youngsters.
“I was not impressed with any one of them. After winning against Beng Hong, Daren lacked confidence and lost to Fang Yang. The others played well but put undue pressure on themselves,” said Rashid.
“Their main weakness is their lack of the mental strength. They show great commitment in training but I do not see the same fire in them during competition. Now, I have to keep on motivating them to be brave on the court,” he said.
Rashid said the men's singles players would now be heading for the German Open and Bahrain Satellite.
Those making the trip to Germany are Daren, Lim Kenn, Tan Chun Seang and Beryno Wong while Wei Feng and Li Qun will head to Bahrain.

Badminton: Rashid cool despite being overlooked

16 Feb 2007

AS a player, Rashid Sidek always wanted to work with coaches he was comfortable with, so he fully agrees with the BA of Malaysia’s decision to appoint Wong Tat Meng as the national singles chief coach.

BAM left it to the players to decide and all opted for Tat Meng, who served as outgoing chief coach Li Mao’s assistant for the last two years.

Rashid and brother Misbun were the frontrunners for the post, with Rashid expected to swing it as his work with the Project 2010-2012 squad has received rave reviews.

http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Friday/Sport/20070216094611/rashid.JPG But the players decided otherwise.

"It does not matter who heads the national team as long as he can do his job well. The players have put their faith in Tat Meng and it is only fair that he is given the job.

"The main criteria before deciding on a coach is to make sure the players are comfortable with the candidate and it was Tat Meng who the shuttlers wanted," said Rashid yesterday.

A bronze medallist in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Rashid said he was more interested in the other decisions BAM had made on Wednesday.

"My objective now is to make sure that my players are given the chance to compete in the super series and grand prix events as they have shown improvement.

"BAM will be sending them to the German and Swiss Opens and I hope this will continue.

"The joint training sessions with the seniors will also benefit them and I’m looking forward to seeing them train with the seniors on a regular basis."

Rashid has six men’s singles players — Tan Chun Seang, Lim Kenn, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Beryno Wong and Chong Li Qun — and four women’s singles players — Julia Wong, Anita Raj, Norsyahliza Baharum and Ooi Swee Wenn — under his guidance. He is assisted by Tey Siu Bock.

Julia stands out among them as she finished runner-up in the four-star Phillipines Open last year, won the Sri Lankan satellite and has the distinction of beating World No 5 Yao Jie of the Netherlands, World No 8 Xu Huaiwen of Germany and World No 11 Kaori Mori of Japan since last June. She is currently ranked World No 22.

Lim Kenn was the first player from the project squad to beat a national player, Lee Tsuen Seng, in the Malaysian satellite last year which forced the latter to quit the national squad, and won the Sri Lankan satellite beating Chun Seang last November.

Daren also beat a national player when he outplayed Kuan Beng Hong in the National Grand Prix Finals in Kuala Terengganu last week.

Chun Seang, despite not winning any title, has been more consistent and is ranked 56th, which is higher than seniors K. Yogendran (61st) and James Chua (169).

Chun Seang, Lim Kenn, Daren and Beryno will be competing alongside Wong Choong Hann and Yogendran in the German Open, a grand prix event, in Mulheim on Feb 27-March 4, and will also compete in the qualifying rounds of the All-England on March 6-11.

The squad’s pairs Khoo Chung Chiat-Razif Latif and Chan Peng Soon-Chang Hun Pin and women’s pair Haw Chiou Hwee-Lim Yin Loo will also compete in both tournaments.

Julia will be competing in the All-England and Swiss Open on March 13-18 while Anita will play in the German Open and the All-England.

Just wanna share, while browsing i found this pic.Roslin and Hafiz twin brother,Hafifi and Hafizi.I never know they are twin until i saw this pic. They also junior badminton player from Nusa Mahsuri right??

http://www.bharian.com.my/Misc/EPG/Images/Remaja/4hashim.jpg

yes they are from nusa mahsuri. i was training there twice last year and i saw them. im planning to go there for a 1month intensive training at the end of this year after my o levels. im sec4 you see.. the people there are nice and kind and funny! even head coach misbun sidek jokes. but my gosh. their training is tough. they like start at 630 in the morning and there are 2 or 3 sessions in a single day. when i went i only did 2 but i heard that there was 1 more which i did not attend that was held at 8pm at night. really fantastic that place. and the motivation level is way up high.

is it better to have more clubs like Nusa and KLRC?? or it is better to do it like in the olden days......all in BAM?

your olden days means 50s or 80s? in 50s, no BAM. all train on their own. centralize training only when competition is near

in my opinion, i think that hafiz has to thank his very good temper and
character for getting in. if im not wrong when i was in nusa last year i heard that he is suffering from sinus or something. im not sure cos im not malay and i can only make up so much. nusa has many wonderful players. zulfari for instance is training at nusa and has rep. msia in singapore open before, but because of his age he couldnt get into the BAM/ MBA.. i dont know im singaporean i only know SBA. haha. yea. there are MANY MANY players there and they do have quite alot of exposure but it does depend on the tournaments sometimes. nusa has many strong players in the u-10 category. they are not famous but they are very good. im SURE that we will see new faces from nusa in the coming years.

hope i helped you. i will inform you when i have anymore news.

i think it had something to do with lee chong wei. does anybody know if he's from klrc or nusa or some other badminton club? cos i heard again when i was training at nusa that misbun does not like to train lee because he has some attitude. maybe thats why his players are not really welcome in the BAM. but then again, its just some rumours i heard during my stay there.

PLEASE READ THIS. MY INFORMATION DOES NOT COME FROM THE PLAYERS OR PEOPLE FROM NUSA MAHSURI. ITS JUST THAT I HAVE MY SOURCES OF INFORMATION. SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. DO NOT GO AROUND TELLING PEOPLE THAT THIS IS 100% TRUE.

no i dont know if he has been under any club.. but when misbun became national singles coach or something he didnt like lcw's attitude. well at least i think. thats why li mao was coaching lcw for the past times..as wad i see in tournaments.. hh as well as wong mew choo has very humble character thats why you see misbun side coaching them in tournaments... last year if i rmb correctly..

Chong Wei Feng,

A year has passed..
Firstly, thanks for letting Erin and I bully you.. Every day was a another “Third World War”..
Miss those days when we bullied you until you laughed like a happy man!!!
All of us became brilliant cooks during the year, always busy preparing the ingredients for grilling, frying, baking, steaming..
Besides cooking, we kill and faint a lot too.
Although we're having a lot of fun with you, we're always here to support you, in your personal life and career.
Today is a special day for you, hope you're enjoying it!
Sorry that we can't go to Vietnam to celebrate it with you, but here we are, greetings from afar..

Happy 20th Birthday Feng!!!

One year older, one year wiser.
May you be blessed with good luck, health, and happiness..
Jia You in badminton!

Regards from,
Erin Kerrrin and Snail Mei Mei
