Badminton: Maiden title for Chun Seang (http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Section/index_html?mysec=Sport)
http://www.nst.com.my/Monday/Sport/20070528080803/insidepix1
Chun Seang: Now aiming for Korat Sea Games spot.
TAN Chun Seang, playing in his 26th tournament on the international stage, won the Vietnam International Challenge in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.
Chun Seang, the joint third seed, was a bundle of nerves early but took a grip on the proceedings to beat unseeded Indonesian Ari Yuli Wahyu 21-16, 18-21, 21-14.
Chun Seang, 21, was denied the title by compatriot Lim Kenn in his previous final, the Sri Lanka satellite last November, and Ari Yuli threatened to do the same yesterday after the Indonesian had eliminated top seed Roslin Hashim in the semi-finals.
Ari Yuli was gunning for his first title but Chun Seang, the 2010-2012 Project squad’s top shuttler, did not waste the golden opportunity.
Yesterday’s win comes as a huge relief to Project squad head coach Rashid Sidek who has seen his players blowing away numerous chances, but more importantly, it is a psychological boost for Chun Seang, who has been persisting for three years for his big break and who remained stagnant after breaking into the top 50 last year.
Chun Seang, the World 46, said by telephone from Ho Chi Minh City yesterday that he is now aiming to earn a place in the squad to December’s Korat Sea Games.
"My target was to win this title as I badly needed it to boost my confidence. There was some pressure but I’m glad to have pulled through," said Chun Seang.
"I will now push for a place in the Korat Sea Games squad and also try to break into the top 30 so that I can qualify for the main draw of the Super Series tournaments.
"I’ll have a better chance of improving my ranking if I can gain direct entry into the main draw of the Super Series.
"I’ll play in the Singapore satellite next week and hope to continue my winning ways there as well."
Roslin is the top seed in Singapore while Chun Seang is the joint third in the satellite event which has attracted virtually the same players from Vietnam, which means Chun Seang has a good opportunity to reach the final again. The tournament begins on Wednesday.
If Chun Seang does win again, his ranking is expected to move up to World No 38. The women’s singles title was won by Commonwealth Games champion Tarcey Hallam of England who beat Indonesia’s Maria Elfira Christina 21-15, 21-15.
Results — (All finals) Men’s singles: Tan Chun Seang (Mas) bt Ari Yuli Wahyu (Ina) 21-16, 18-21, 21-14.
Doubles: Mohamed Ahsan-Bona Septano (Ina) bt Cho Gun Woo-Yoo Yeon Seong (S Kor) 21-15, 21-19.
Women’s singles: Tracey Hallam (Eng) bt Maria Elfira Christina (Ina) 21-15, 21-15.
Doubles: Yulianti-Dili Puspita Richi (Ina) bt Ha Jung Eun-Kim Min Jung (S Kor) 21-15, 21-17.
Mixed doubles: Trikus Heryanto-Yunita Tetty (Ina) bt Akhmad Tantowi-Yulianti (Ina) 21-17, 9-21, 21-16.

The success of TCS in Vietnam proves Rasid Sidek is good enough we can rely on his 08-12 project.
TCS should be trained and play more like LD style, A good offence is always a good defence.
TCS can play aggresive game which other MAS senior players lack of, except LCW. What he needs to improve is his stamina. Rasid and Fu KoK Keong used to trained this under Fang (his ex coach and now INA coach)

Just to be exact, Fang Kaixiang is PB. Djarum's coach in INA. He does not coach the National Team. Fang have also coached PB. Tangkas in the past... Djarum and Tangkas are badminton clubs in INA. :)
Congratulations to TCS again! Awesome youngster. Awesome left-handed overhead.
Let's see TCS vs. Andre Kurniawan Tedjono next time... ;) Andre is 20, will be 21 this year. Basically the same age as TCS. MAS young star vs. INA young star! :D
Unlike TCS who almost always breathes heavily by the 3rd set, Andre is so fit he doesn't appear tired at all. But unlike TCS, Andre does not have that awesome left-handed overhead.... So far that I know, TCS excel in power, Andre in stamina.
Maybe they will see each other at the Thailand Open GP or the Philippine Open GP or... Indonesia Challenge in Surabaya! Come to Indonesia TCS, we want to see you compete with our INA Juniors some more... ;)

ok i dont know what are all your opinions but i really hate it when i see people saying that.. hey, you know XXX player is under YYY coach and should be trained ABC way to go further. my personal opinion is that the coach knows what to do and although the player plays for the country, we have no rights whatsoever to say such things. anyhows, i personally feel that people who like to say XXX player should be trained in ABC way are kinda showoffs.

Today, I read in a malay newspaper about Yap Kim Hock's wish to send the MJs to this year's SEA Games in Korat. But still have to wait for the approval from the National Sports Council (NSC).
If NSC approved then four MJs will be chosen. But if NSC wants some seniors in the squad, then KBH & LTS might be chosen while the remaining slots will be given to the MJs.

Firstly, I was not directing my post to Krisna if there was ANY misunderstanding. But now for my real reply to this. If you could not understand why I said that, that just goes to show that you are a immature person who is ignorant to the feelings of others. To add on, we do NOT have any right to say that the players should be trained in ABC way unless you are the national coach of some famous country like Misbun Sidek or Li YongBo. I'm trying to make a point here, if you are have failed to notice. Oya, please don't try to act like you are a very well educated person by placing the SIN and INA to our names. You are merely an ang moh as us singaporeans like to say. In any case, whether or not Krisna is wel educated or not I do not know. But I know for a fact that you are not.

Badminton: Rashid’s faith in Kwong Beng pays off (http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Section/index_html?mysec=Sport)
http://www.nst.com.my/Saturday/Sport/20070623082848/insidepix1
CHAN Kwong Beng (pic) was once branded an indisciplined player but 2010-2012 Project squad coach Rashid Sidek has dismissed the allegation.
In fact, Rashid says Kwong Beng is probably the most talented back-up shuttler at the moment.
Kwong Beng, 19, was the top ranked shuttler in Bukit Jalil Sports School until 2005, twice a national junior champion and a quarter-finalist at the Asian Junior Championships.
Despite that, Kwong Beng was hardly considered for tournaments last year and was surprisingly left out from the squads to the Asian and World Junior Championships.
Discipline and lack of talent were often the excuses but Rashid retained his faith in the shuttler and sought his brother Misbun’s help to guide Kwong Beng and his three mates — Lok Chong Chieh, Zairul Hafiz Zainuddin and Syed Akhbar Syed Mustakim — in March.
Kwong Beng accepted the opportunity to spar with national seniors Lee Chong Wei, Hafiz Hashim and Kuan Beng Hong under Misbun and the results were immediate.
Kwong Beng, who was not considered for any tournament since last November, reached the semi-finals of the Vietnam Challenge and the final of the Singapore Satellite where he lost to eventual champion Tan Chun Seang on both occasions.
Kwong Beng was ranked World No 431 before the two events but his unexpected performance saw him leapfrogging to World No 166.
Rashid said he never doubted Kwong Beng’s dedication and the latest results have proven that the shuttler remained stagnant due to limited opportunities, not because of indiscipline.
"If I were to send my squad members for any tournament, Kwong Beng’s name will be the first one I’ll enter as he is a dedicated player. I was surprised to hear that he was indisciplined and lacked talent," said Rashid.
"If he is not good enough, he wouldn’t have improved so drastically in just three months."
Kwong Beng’s reward is a chance to compete in the Thailand Open, which will be held on July 3-9, where he will be playing in the qualifying rounds and is also expected to get selected for the Philippines Open on July 17-22.

Chun Seang: Bring on Chen Jin
KUALA LUMPUR: Inspired by his recent back-to-back international victories, national back-up shuttler Tan Chun Seang (pic) has vowed to give Chen Jin of China a run for his money in the Thailand Open from July 3-8.
The 21-year-old Chun Seang was unlucky to draw the top seeded Chen Jin in the first round of the US$120,000 tournament in Bangkok.
But the Malaysian, who won the Vietnam International Challenge (May) and the Asian Satellite (June), is not throwing in the towel yet.
“The recent wins have given me a lot of confidence. Chen Jin and I played in the same world junior tournament three years ago. He is the world number two now. I may not be in the same class as him but I hope to be up there eventually,” Chun Seang, the world No 39.
To ensure that he can keep pace with the big guns, Chun Seang has been working hard to improve on his attack.
“My coach (Rashid Sidek) has been focusing on my smashing skills every day. I spend about 30 minutes daily just on smashes,” he said. “My dream is to be the country’s top player. It will take a little more time but I believe that I am certainly on the right track.”
Chun Seang is one of the three players from the Project 2010-12 to play in the main draw of the Thailand Open. The others are Liew Daren and Chong Wei Feng.
In the first round, Liew will meet Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto while Wei Feng faces a qualifier.

“My coach (Rashid Sidek) has been focusing on my smashing skills every day. I spend about 30 minutes daily just on smashes,” he said. “My dream is to be the country’s top player. It will take a little more time but I believe that I am certainly on the right track.”
Can somebody tell Chun Seang that Chen Jin practices smashes 90 minutes per day... Chun Seang's 30 minutes per day is pale in comparisson... :p

Actually, Chen Jin did beat Tan Chun Seang in World Junior Team Championships 2004. 15-2, 15-11
source
but that was a long time ago.... I'm sure TCS has made strides of improvements since then.
TCS did make strides...
Tan won the 2007 Vietnam Challenge and 2007 Singapore Series and ranked #37 in the BWF list. Practices smashes 30 minutes per day.
So did Chen Jin...
Chen won the 2007 Swiss Super Series, the 2006 China Masters, the 2006 German Open and ranked number 4 in the planet.:cool::cool::cool: Practices smashes 90 minutes per day.

Badminton: Coach wants Kwong Beng to raise his game
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s singles coach Misbun Sidek has thrown a challenge to youngster Chan Kwong Beng (pic) to raise his game to a new height in the US$120,000 Thailand Open, which begins today in Bangkok with the qualifying tournament.
The 19-year-old back-up shuttler is the only player under Misbun’s charge who will see action in the tournament.
His top three players – Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Kuan Beng Hong – are giving the tournament a skip. And three of Misbun’s junior charges – Lok Chong Chieh, Zairul Hafiz Zainuddin and Syed Akhbar Mustakim – were not selected.
Misbun wants Kwong Beng, who holds the credentials of having won the national schools (MSSM) Under-15 (2003) and Under-18 (2005) titles, to start making his mark on the bigger international stage.
“He did well in two previous satellite tournaments and I want him to continue with his good showing. The Thai Open will be tougher and I have asked him to spring some upsets,” said Misbun.
At the Asian Satellite in Singapore, he defeated two Project 2010-12 players – Liew Daren and Lim Kenn – en route to the semi-finals. He did better at the Vietnam Satellite – eliminating Thai number two Poompat Sapkulchananart and national player K. Yogendran.
Misbun said that the commitment showed by Kwong Beng reminded him of Chong Wei, who came under his charge four years ago.
“Kwong Beng is taking a similar approach to training as Chong Wei in his younger days. He can also read the game of his opponents quickly and has good anticipation,” he said.
“He is more prominent among the back-up players who train under me. The only setback is that he is shorter than Chong Wei but he makes up for it with fast movements on court. It gives me a good feeling to see his commitment in training.
“I am spending more time to develop his game. The sparring session with the top players is also helping him. Hopefully, all his work will be translated to a good showing in the Thai Open.”
Kwong Beng will take on Indonesian Nugroho Andi Saputro in the first round of the qualifying tournament today. A place in the main draw will give him a match against KLRC Bhd’s Lee Tsuen Seng, who is using the tournament as a run-up to the World Championships, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19.
In the same quarter of the draw are second seed Chen Hong of China and Nusa Mahsuri’s Mohd Roslin Hashim.
The other Malaysians in action in the qualifying round today are Vountus Indra Mawan, Lim Fang Yang, Teo Kok Siang, Chong Li Qun and Beryno Wong.
Meanwhile, Misbun said that Beng Hong, who has been given a clean bill of health after a dengue fever scare, would skip next week’s China Masters, which is the seventh leg of the Super Series, to concentrate on the Philippines Open from July 17-22.

I had the opportunities to watch Lim Kenn and Tan Chun Seang in action in 2005 MO. Chun Seang was much more aggressive and well built than Lim Kenn... he has this thunderous jump smash which was really impressive. Meanwhile Lim Kenn is more of a stroke player who would move his opponent around the court and finish off with a sharp side line smash or drop. Technique wise i thought he was slightly better while Chun Seang has the edge in power.

Chiou Hwee proves to be an asset for KLRC
www.thestar.com.my (http://www.thestar.com.my/)
Monday July 16, 2007
PETALING JAYA: Former national back-up shuttler Haw Chiou Hwee is the latest recruit of professional badminton club KLRC Bhd.
And her switch to the club has brought her success.
Chiou Hwee lifted her first international title in a partnership with seasoned campaigner Lim Pek Siah at the Victorian International in Australia yesterday.
They defeated New Zealand's Renee Flavell-Donna Cranston 21-8, 21-14 in the women's doubles final in just 25 minutes.
The 20-year-old Chiou Hwee left the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) Project 2010-12 squad last month citing personal reasons.
She was seen as the country's future talent after partnering Julia Wong to win the National Grand Prix Finals title in Terengganu in February.
The KLRC Bhd's owner, Datuk Seri Andrew Kam, was happy that the Chiou Hwee and Pek Siah partnerships had got off to a flying start in their first international tournament.
“Chiou Hwee is a player who has impressed us and she is full of energy. We decided to test her combination with Pek Siah in the Victorian International and we are glad that they succeeded in winning the title,” he said.
Besides Pek Siah-Chiou Hwee, the KLRC Bhd also have former national doubles players Joanne Quay and Chor Hooi Yee in their stable.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Damn funny wei! (Dunno what's so funny tho..but i laughed when i saw this on TV)
I just watched ESPN. They show some clips and interviews from AJC. Then the commentator mentioned Lim Kenn, Chan Kwong Beng and someone.. i forgot.
He said these juniors started feeling the pressure since playing in Thai Open where they met top players and got eliminated in the early rounds. But things are looking up for MAS badminton scene cuz we won AJC mixed team event, WCH in China Masters Final, LCW in good run in Phil Open etc etc..
There was a short interview of LFY also.

Rayzam was picked over swimmer Daniel Bego and badminton player Mohd Arif Abdul Latiff for the boys' award.
The 19-year-old Rayzam won the silver medal in the 110m hurdles of the Asian junior championships in Macau last July with a personal best of 13.84. The time was better than the Asian junior record of 14.05 set by Shi Dongpeng of China in Brunei in 2001.
The SMK Gunsand Keningau student's also retained the Asean schools title in Chiang Mai in August with a time of 14.22. He went on to clock 13.92 in the semi-finals of the world junior championships in Beijing and was ranked 11th in the meet.

The best sportsboy and sportsgirl awards went to hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian and artistic gymnast Nabihah Ali.
Rayzam is currently the third ranked national hurdler after Robani Hassan and Mohd Faiz Mohamed.
Nabihah was chosen in favour of national bowler Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahim.
She won six gold medals in the national schools (MSSM) championships last year; three silvers in the Asian schools championships in Manila; and was placed 19th in the individual competition of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Both Rayzam and Nabihah were not present to receive the awards. Rayzam competed in the Asian Track and Field (ATF) Championships in Jordan and only returned home yesterday evening. Nabihah is undergoing a one-month training stint in Kunming.
Bowler Mohd Rafiq Ismail and squash player Yong Sue Ann won the boys' and girls' promising talent award respectively.
“I was a bit surprised to be selected for this award. But I am grateful to the Education Ministry, MSSM and Milo for recognising my efforts in squash,” said the 12-year-old Sue Ann, who finished third in the Under-15 Australian Junior Tri-series and reached the quarter-finals Under-15 British Junior Open last year.
“I am having my UPSR this year. After that I will put in more effort to concentrate on winning a place in the national junior team to compete in the World Juniors in two years.”
p/s:No arif latiff... sigh..
Those who got the awards have better results than Arif. So its okay. I'm sure Arif will strive to work harder.

This boy is talented. If he remains well grounded and stay focused. He might be someone one day. I've seen him play against Taufik and Peter Gade. He tricked both of them and make them look silly at times. These 2 guys have respect for him. They encouraged him to play on.
