The squad, gearing up for the 2010 Asian Games and 2012 Olympic Games, was formed in March last year.

By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: A lot is at stake for the singles shuttlers in the Project 2010-2012 squad in Sukma (Malaysia Games).
The stars of the Under-23 competition, which begins in Alor Star on May 28, will be selected for major Open tournaments but the under-achievers may find themselves axed from the squad.
By using Sukma as one of the final platforms to review the players' performances, coach Rashid Sidek expects his charges to put up a good show.
“I have given the permission to the boys to start their centralised training with their respective states, beginning tomorrow (Monday),” said Rashid.
“There are high expectations on them to do well in Sukma. The finalists and those who create upsets will be selected for two upcoming major tournaments – Singapore Open (June 5-11) and Malaysian Open (June 13-18). This is an incentive for them.
“Sukma is also one of the tournaments for me to evaluate the players. Those who perform poorly or lose tamely to other state players may not be considered good enough to be in the team.”
Except for Law Yew Thien, who crashed out in the semi-finals to Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin at the last Sukma in Negri Sembilan years ago, all the others in the squad will compete in Alor Star.
Hazwan, who went down tamely to Kedahan Kuan Beng Hong in the final of the 2004 Sukma, will be out to go one step better.
The others from the Project squad who will be competing in the Kedah Sukma are Lim Kenn, Liew Daren, Tan Chun Seang, Mohd Shafiq Jamaluddin, Azrihanif Azahar, Beryno Wong , Chong Wei Feng, Hew Loon, Chong Li Qun, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Lok Chong Chieh, Lim Fang Yang, Vountus Indra Mawan, Kuan Kam Chung, Zairul Hafiz Zainudin, Teo Kok Siang and Chan Kwong Beng.
Of all his charges, Rashid felt that Liew Daren, Lim Kenn and Chun Seang are the frontrunners for the boys' singles title.
“These players have been in good form in training. Hazwan may be the runner-up but he will find it tough to live up to his tag this time. His form had not been impressive in training,” said Rashid.
Rashid added that he would also be on a look out for new talent.
“If we spot players with talent, we will give them a chance to undergo a three-month trial with my squad,” he said.
“And state players who beat any of my charges will get an immediate call-up to train with my team.”
After delaying for many times, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will finally conduct a review of the Project squad after the Malaysian Open.
The squad, gearing up for the 2010 Asian Games and 2012 Olympic Games, was formed in March last year.

Hehe... these are from some websites I think... got over 100 personal pics of them... but we'll ask them if they let us post ;)
Dreamzz 05-26-2006, 05:01 AM seems a lot of the boys junior MS are left-handed ... perhaps they think LD has an advantage over the rest because he's left handed. i suppose you get less practice with left handers since they only represent 10-15% of the general population, so maybe there's a slight advantage there.
erin_hakkinen 05-26-2006, 06:27 AM Let see who will be promoted to train under Li Mao

Last chance for juniors to keep their place in squad
KUCHING: With a place in the Project 2010-12 squad at stake, the juniors are expected to go the extra mile in the Proton Malaysian Open badminton championships starting today at the Stadium Perpaduan.
The Project's chief coach Rashid Sidek has decided to wield the axe and trim his current 30-member squad after the four-star Malaysian Open.
“This Malaysian Open is the last chance for some of these players – both boys and girls – to impress. I will drop some of the under-achievers,” said Rashid. “I have not decided on the number of players that will be dropped. But those dropped can be taken back if they prove themselves in other local tournaments,” he said.
Today, some of the interesting first round matches involving Rashid's charges will be between the Kedah Malaysian Games (Sukma) gold medallist Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin and two-time Malaysian champion Lee Chong Wei; Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin vs top seed Lin Dan of China; Liew Daren vs India's Anand Chetan; and Chong Wei Feng vs Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.
Women's singles shuttler Anita Raj Kaur will take on China-born Pi Hongyan of France who won the Singapore Open crown on Sunday.

Singles shuttlers again fall flat despite Chong Wei’s win
By RAJES PAUL
KUCHING: Apart from Lee Chong Wei's heroics at the Malaysia Open, the other men's singles shuttlers in the national team failed to live up to expectations in Sarawak.
Chong Wei's strong show was the only high point from the men's singles players when he won his third consecutive title in great fashion on Sunday.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/6/20/sports/seng.jpg TSUEN SENG: Failed to produce results
The second seed Chong Wei dug himself out of trouble to upset world number one Lin Dan of China 21-18, 18-21, 23-21 in the final at the Perpaduan Stadium.
But the performances of the other singles players were a huge letdown.
Kuan Beng Hong's misery in international tournaments continued when he failed to get past Germany's second best player Roman Spitko in the second round.
Lee Tsuen Seng, K. Yogendran and James Chua again showed that they are merely making up the numbers with early round defeats.
Yeoh Kay Bin, a back-up player, has showed a slight improvement since coming under the charge of Chinese coach Li Mao but he too failed to make an impact in Kuching.
Nusa Mahsuri's Roslin Hashim and former international Sairul Amar Ayob however, continued to perform better than these back-up players.
Roslin went down fighting to China's Lin Dan in the semi-finals and it showed that the veteran still has the fire to improve while Sairul posed problems for the higher-ranked opponents.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said that he was getting tired of giving some of the players in the national team the chance to prove themselves.
“This is the final straw. We are making changes in the singles set-up end of this year after the World Championships (Sept 18-24 in Madrid) and the Asian Games (Dec 1-15 in Doha). Some players will have to go,” said Kim Hock.
“Tsuen Seng especially has been given countless opportunities to prove himself and yet, he has failed to produce the results.”
Kim Hock said that the plan was to promote two players from Rashid Sidek's Project 2010-12 after the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Kedah recently to the national team but it did not fall through.
“Li Mao was unable to pick the best two. The standard of the juniors are about the same and he could not decide. He will make his pick at the end of this year,” said Kim Hock.
Rashid's charges also took part in the Malaysian Open. Except for Beryno Wong, who put up a fight against Lin Dan, the others showed that they were still not ready for the big league. The next assignment for the Malaysians is the Taiwan Open starting tomorrow.

Yeah... i doubt BAM will approve it... Our men doubles juniors are talented enough for sure...
But for men singles, this sort of action is kinda heartbreaking to those Malaysian Juniors, Lee Tsuen Seng, Wong and mostly kuan beng hong... :crying:
But I thought Rexy are bringing them over to watch Malaysian players play? Are they really gonna make up their career here?

Beng Hong: Leave me out
By RAJES PAUL
KUCHING: National men’s singles shuttler Kuan Beng Hong is ready to forgo his first-ever trip to this year’s World Championships if he fails to snap out of his miserable run in international tournaments.
At the recent Malaysian Open in Sarawak, the 23-year-old Beng Hong went down to an upset defeat to Germany's Roman Spitko 18-21, 10-21 in the second round.
Prior to the shocking exit, Beng Hong was also beaten by Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh in the Philippines Open; lost to Singaporean Ronald Susilo in the first round of the Singaporean Open; and fared miserably in his debut at the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan last month.
“I get the jitters at the mention of the Thomas Cup as I have been on a decline since then,” said Beng Hong.
“In Singapore, I lost to Ronald, who was coming out of an injury. In the Malaysian Open, I lost to an unheralded player.
“It is just getting worse. I am so demoralised.”
However, he is determined to put all that behind and has vowed to start afresh under Chinese coach Li Mao.
“I just want to forget all these. It has been a nightmare,” said Beng Hong yesterday.
The shuttler said that he would give up his place in the squad for the World Championships, scheduled to be held in Madrid from Sept 18-24, if he does not improve under Li Mao.
He has been selected for the world meet as a replacement for Wong Choong Hann, who is undergoing rehabilitation after a surgery for snapped tendon rupture.
“The world meet is just three months away. I am aware that there can’t be immediate results when I start training under Li Mao after this Malaysian Open. But I want to improve my style of play,” said Beng Hong.
Beng Hong, who is ranked 15th in the world, was removed from the charge of Misbun Sidek after the Thomas Cup Finals and will begin training under Li Mao after the Malaysian Open.

ksooi 06-24-2006, 01:09 AM nope.. just happened to be coming across him...

Nope....definitely not a junior.....he is considered the No 3 singles player now that WCH is out for some period of time....plus he has been in the BAM setup for too long to be considered a junior.....more of a backup player before WCH was injured....

Malaysia good for two titles
30 Jun 2006
MALAYSIA, in the absence of powerhouse China, are the favourites to win the boys’ singles and mixed team titles in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships which will be held at the KLBA Stadium in Cheras beginning Monday.
In the men’s singles, Arif Latif (pic) is the top seed while Lok Chong Chieh and Vountus Indra Mawan are the joint third seeds and this will provide Malaysia a golden opportunity to win the boys’ singles title for the first time.
Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk is the second seed but the Malaysians are good enough to secure the final berths.
In the mixed team event, top seeds Malaysia are likely to battle for the title with second seeds South Korea.
The Koreans will be relying on their national senior doubles squad member Lee Yong Dae and national back-up player Jang Soo Young to shock the hosts.
In the women’s singles, Lydia Cheah will be Malaysia’s best bet but she will have to contend with favourite Soo Young, China’s Wang Yihan and India’s Saina Nehwal.
Arif and Vountus are the top seeds in the boys’ doubles but Yong Dae and Cho Gun Woo, the second seeds, are the clear favourites to win the title.
The seedings were based on the International Badminton Federation’s (IBF) world ranking but do not reflect the true strength of the juniors competing in the tournament.
Some of the better juniors were not seeded as they have not competed in the IBF grand prix tournaments and the Asian Junior Championships promises plenty of upsets.

Chinese and Koreans can spoil party for Malaysian top seeds
BY RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: The odds are stacked high against the Malaysian players in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships despite being seeded tops in three out of the five individual events.
The Asian meet, which will start with the team event on Monday and individual event on Wednesday at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA), has attracted top juniors from China, South Korea, Indonesia and India.
Malaysia are seeded tops in the boys' singles (Mohd Arif Mohd Latif), boys' doubles (Arif-Vountus Indra Mawan) and mixed doubles (Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei).
Although Arif has shown good progress under the guidance of Chinese coach Zhou Kejian, he will have to brace himself for tough challenges from unseeded players from China – Lu Qicheng, Du Pengyu and Chen Tian Yu.
http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/6/30/sports/s_p54arif.jpg TOUGH TASK: Mohd Arif Mohd Latif will find it difficult to break the Chinese barrier in the Asian Badminton Championships.
Out of the three Chinese, Qicheng, will probably be the most dangerous as he had made some of the seniors look like amateurs in the China Masters this year. Besides China, South Korea will be banking on their trump card Hong Ji-hoon to go far in this tournament.
The other singles shuttlers are Vountus, Teo Kok Seng, Lok Chong Chieh and Lim Fang Yang - all students from BJSS.
In the boys' doubles, Arif-Vountus may have been given top billing because they have better world rankings for competing in more satellite tournaments, but the real favourite is South Korean second seeds Lee Yong-dae-Cho Gun-woo.
The 18-year-old Yong-dae was instrumental in his partnership with senior Jae Jung-sung during the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan. Then, the duo beat Malaysia’s top pair Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat.
In the mixed doubles, Malaysia's best Wee Kiong-Khe Wei will find it hard to live up to their seeding. Their main challengers are Koreans – second seed Yong-dae-Yoo Hyun-young of South Korea and Gun-woo-Sun In-jang.
Malaysia's hope in the girls’ singles rests on Lydia Cheah.
But, the Malaysian Games (Sukma) gold medallist Lydia will have to go against an array of stars, which includes the Philippines Open winner Saina Nehwal of India, top seed Jang Young-soo (former Korean's top women singles shuttler) and China's Wang Yihan, who is seen as a future top player for the country.
For the record, when Malaysia last hosted the Asian junior meet in Kuala Lumpur, Kien Kean-Ong Soon Hock emerged as the boys’ doubles champion in 2002. In fact, they were the last Malaysian to win at the Asian junior meet.

Rashid have been given too Many players? Rather it was him whom took in too many players.
Rashid is still yet to be in the spotlight of the media. 2010-12 is a long way to go. They should start acting like the future national squad & the future national singles head coach. Not as a 'back up squad' 7 back up squad coach.
Prior to this, I have never met a head coach so eager to release his best charges to another head coach.
Its a strange world we live in.

Badminton: Rashid: We are getting bad deal
03 Jul 2006
K.M. Boopathy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE Project 2010-2012 badminton training programme, aimed at preparing national shuttlers for the 2010 Asian Games and 2012 Olympic Games, has lost sight of its objectives.
The damning assessment was made by Rashid Sidek, the man entrusted to oversee the project together. Rashid is assisted by Tey Siu Bock and Rosman Razak.
"The Project squad is supposed to be preparing for the 2010 Asian Games and 2012 Olympics. However, at the rate things are moving, it is looking more like a national back-up squad," said Rashid.
"There should be better planning for the squad. The players even struggled to get a chance to compete in international tournaments for almost a year.
"They were considered for several events but funding was always an issue.
How can we set up a concrete long term programme when we are short of coaches and the right mixture of players.
"I also do not agree with the arrangement where our potential players are upgraded to the senior squad too soon. The potential players should be with our squad longer."
BAM decided to recruit two project squad players for the senior squad after Malaysia’s lack of depth in the singles was exposed during the Thomas Cup Finals in Tokyo in May.
The 2010-2012 squad was formed under Rashid in January last year but have not been getting the focus and assistance received by the Project 2006-2008 squad which is led by national head coach Yap Kim Hock.
While the national senior squad enjoys superb facilities, including an eight-member support team of sports science experts, the 2010-2012 squad has been treated merely as a feeder squad, and more unfortunately, without a concrete programme.
Rashid and Siu Bock currently train 13 men’s singles and four women’s singles players while the doubles players are under the guidance of Rosman and Woon Sze Mei.
Initially, Rashid wanted his players join the national team but changed his mind as there were no immediate plans by BAM to drop stagnant senior players.
The two players were supposed to train under Chinese coach Li Mao and his assistant Wong Tat Meng but the duo have nine players to focus on.
"How much can Li Mao do with such a big squad. I’m sure he has to focus on the top three or four players. What kind of exposure my players will gain?," asked Rashid.
"It is better for them to remain with me as they still need to improve.
"Their basics are not strong and they are not going to get personal attention with the senior team."
Rashid, who has a total of 29 players in the squad, will be dropping five of his 13 men’s singles players so that they will gain more personal attention in training.
The BAM, after some persuasion by Rashid, have started giving the Project Squad better focus with Tan Kim Her, who is currently coaching South Korea’s men’s doubles, likely to be appointed as doubles coach.
But is that enough?

Arif: China will be our big test in mixed team event
KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS)'s shuttler Mohd Arif Abdul Latif has played down his chances despite being the top seed in all three events in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships.
Today, Arif, who is competing in his second junior meet, will spearhead top seed Malaysia's challenge in the mixed team event at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) when they take on Pakistan in the first round.
The 17-year-old Arif is also the top seed in the boys' singles and doubles with Vountus Indra Mawan.
Arif, who is the younger brother to national doubles shuttler Mohd Zakry, said China would be their main hurdle in the mixed team event.
The mixed team event is introduced for the first time in the Asian junior meet.
“The first round should not be a problem for us. We may take on Japan in the quarter-finals but the real test for us will be against China.
“We are expected to meet them in the semi-finals,” said Arif.
Last year in Jakarta, Malaysia's boys' team lost to China in the semi-finals.
In the individual event, Arif is hoping to improve on his performances after losing in the last 16 and quarter-finals in the boy's singles and doubles last year.
China will be banking on defending champion Lu Qicheng and South Korea will be pining hope on their last year's runner-up Hong Ji-hoon to go one step better in the boys' singles.
In the boy's doubles, South Korea are the clear favourites through their defending champion Lee Yong-dae-Cho Gun-woo.
Meanwhile, in the qualifying tournament for the mixed team event yesterday, four teams made the cut. They are Pakistan, Philippines, North Korea and Kazakhstan.
Qualifying tournament

Japan, China in Malaysia’s way

Ajitpal Singh (ajitpalsingh@nst.com.my)
MALAYSIA’S top junior singles player Mohd Arif Abdul Latif hopes Malaysia will be able to live up to their top billing in the mixed team event of the Asian Junior Badminton Championships at the KLBA Stadium in Cheras today.
The 17-year-old Negri Sembilan-born player said it will not be easy to clinch the title as Malaysia have to beat Japan and China to earn a place in the final.
"I have seen the Japanese shuttlers play in the international junior circuit and they are technically more superior than us, especially in the boys’ singles and doubles," said Arif, who won the Dutch Junior Open in March.
"If we beat Japan tomorrow (today) in the second round, we are likely to play China in the semi-finals."
He said although China are not seeded in the tournament, it does not reflect their true strength.
"Most of the junior Chinese shuttlers are not highly ranked as they play in selected tournaments. Traditionally, Chinese players are very strong and Malaysia have to be careful," he said.
China will have the services of last year’s Asian Junior champion Lu Qicheng in the mixed team.
They will play Singapore in the opening round today.
Mohd Arif, who won a bronze medal in the recent Malaysia Games in Kedah, is the top seed in the boy’s singles and doubles with Sabah-born Indra Vountus Mawan.
However, Mohd Arif, whose elder brother Mohd Zakry is a doubles player in the senior squad, has only set a semi-final target for both events.
"It will be tough to win the singles as countries like China, Japan and South Korea have sent their top players for the event," said Mohd Arif, who started donning national colours when he was 14-years-old.
In last year’s edition in Jakarta, Indonesia, Mohd Arif lost in the third round in the singles and the doubles quarter-finals.
Mohd Arif’s elder sister Nairul Suhaida will also be representing Malaysia in the girls’ doubles in this tournament.
RESULTS (qualifying round) —
Group A : Pakistan 5 Jordan 0; Pakistan 5 Cambodia 0; Philippines 5 Jordan 0; Philippines 5 Cambodia 0; Philippines 5 Pakistan 0; Cambodia 3 Jordan 2;

Buddies Arif and Vountus storm into third round
KUALA LUMPUR: Close friends Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Vountus Indra Mawan got off to convincing starts in the boy's singles event in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) here yesterday.
Arif and Vountus, who have been roommates at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) hostel since playing badminton together in 2002, are two of the five Malaysian singles players still left standing in the tournament after the first day of action.
The 17-year-old Arif defeated Vann Chanpisey of Cambodia 21-7, 21-5 while Vountus knocked out Sri Lankan Hettiarachchi Nuwan T.J 21-10, 21-11 in the second round matches yesterday.
Both received first round byes.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/7/7/sports/s_p58mawan.jpg THROUGH: Vountus Indra Mawan defeated Sri Lankan Hettiarachchi Nuwan T.J 21-10, 21-11 in the second round match yesterday.
The other BJSS boys, who also cleared their second round hurdles are Teo Kok Siang, Lok Chong Chieh and Lim Fang Yang.
The only casualty in the boys' singles was Kuan Kam Chung, who went down fighting to China's Chen Tian Yu 21-19, 10-21, 10-21 in the second round.
The top seeded Arif said that a good showing in the Asian junior meet would improve their chances of winning a ticket for this year's World Junior Championships.
“Vountus and I are hoping for a good showing here. It will certainly strengthen our chances to feature in our first ever world junior meet later this year,” said Arif.
Arif is expected to meet either Tian Yu or Korean Choi Sang-won for a place in the semi-finals.
For Vountus, it would be even tougher to reach the last eight. He will take on China's Du Pengyu today in the third round.
Said Vountus: “Hopefully, Arif and I will face each other in the semi-finals. It will be tough for me but I will give my best shot. We have trained hard for this meet.”
However, If that does not materialise, the duo will still be able to shine In the boy's doubles.
Yesterday, the duo knocked out South Korea's second top junior pair Lee Jung-whan-Kim Ki-jun 21-18, 21-18 in the second round.
It was however, a sad day for the duo's siblings.
Vountus' younger sister Saniru Sannatasah got off to a disappointing start after losing 15-21, 18-21 to South Korean Bang Eun-hye in the second round of the girls' singles.
In the girls doubles, Arif's elder sister Nairul Suhada and Jeslyn Pang went down 16-21, 15-21 to China's Liao Ging Mei-Wang Siyun in the second round.
Meanwhile, Lydia Cheah kept Malaysia's flag flying high when she marched into the girls' singles third round after a superb 21-6, 21-3 win over Pakistan's Isa Marukh. Lydia will be joined by Stephanie Shalini, Vivian Hoo and Tee Jing Yi in the third round today.
jug8man 07-07-2006, 02:38 AM If one of Rashid's Squad member play their cards right in the next few tourneys, the last spot in the Asian Games is still in reach.
All that Rashid's charges have to do is outshine the following Senior Squad members :-
1) Kuan Beng Hong (No point sending any jr below this guy, or at least show better 'potential' & 'reliability')
2) K Yogendran
3) James Chua (FYI, He's is currently still in the squad)
4) Lee Tsuen Seng
I think Melaka Open (July 20-23) will be an important & exciting place to determine this. Rashid's 2010-12 squad pitted againts the Seniors in a Free For All Slobber Knocker!!!

Badminton/Asian Junior Championships: Three more for Doha
07 Jul 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) will request the inclusion of three more doubles players in the 2006 Doha Asian Games programme following the improvement showed by the three.
World No 4 Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan Tazari and Gan Teik Chai are the ones BAM is pushing for to enter a programme which already has Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Zakry Latif.
BAM secretary P. Ganga Rao said the decision is based on the rapid progress shown by the national men’s doubles squad where currently four pairs are ranked in the top 10.
Chong Ming-Kien Keat are ranked World No 3, followed by Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan, Tan Fook-Wan Wah (7th) while Teik Chai and Zakry occupy 10th position.
"This is the first time we have four men’s doubles pairs in the top 10 and this shows they have made progress. Five of them are already in the 2006 Doha programme and we want another three players," said Ganga.
"This will give us more options when the squad is finalised in October.
"As for the men’s singles, we have four players and there will be no changes or additions unless requested by the coaches."
Chong Ming-Kien Keat and Tan Fook-Wan Wah look certain to claim a place in the Games squad while the third spot will be a tussle between Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan and Teik Chai-Zakry.
Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan can strengthen their claim if they perform well in the World Championships in Madrid on Sept 18-24.
The men’s singles players who are in the programme are World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, Hafiz Hashim, Kuan Beng Hong and Wong Choong Hann.
Choong Hann underwent surgery after rupturing his Achilles tendon during the Thomas Cup in May and should he fail to recover in time for the Dec 1-15 Doha Asian Games, BAM must identify a replacement
Choong Hann’s injury during the quarter-final stage against South Korea saw a reshuffle in the Thomas Cup semi-final where all three singles players — Chong Wei, Hafiz and Beng Hong — lost their matches.
Beng Hong is not a reliable team player and there is always the possibility of Choong Hann suffering a recurrence of his injury hence the need for a fifth player in the programme.
The other players who are in the Doha programme are women’s doubles pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui and singles player Wong Mew Choo.

Badminton: Beng Hong in last eight
22 Jul 2006
KUAN Beng Hong, aiming to capitalise on Lee Chong Wei’s absence to win his first local grand prix title, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Malacca Open badminton championships yesterday.
Beng Hong, the top seed, brushed aside junior player Lok Chong Chieh 21-9, 21-15 in the second round.
He will meet 2010-2012 Project squad’s Azrihanif Azahar in the quarter-final today. Azrihanif defeated another Project squad player, Liew Darren, 21-14, 22-20.
Chong Wei had to skip the tournament to compete in the ongoing Macau Open as he needs ranking points to maintain his World No 1 status.
Second seed Yeoh Kay Bin also stayed in contention when he defeated Beryno Wong 21-15, 21-15. He will meet Hazwan Jamluddin in the last eight.
Internationals K. Yogendran and James Chua set up a semi-final showdown after easy victories.
Yogendran defeated Lee Hock Lai 21-16, 21-10 while Chua beat Tan Chun Seang 21-18, 21-17 in the second round.
Project squad players Chong Wei Feng and Chong Li Qun completed the quarter-final line-up with Wei Feng beating Lim Kenn 23-21, 20-22, 21-10 and Li Qun beating former international Ramesh Nathan 21-17, 13-21, 21-8.

gemini12 07-26-2006, 11:11 PM Does this mean that Lydia Cheah reaching the final is just something with 99% luck and 1% hardwork?
To be fair to Lydia, before the individual event starts she has been playing almost 7 days of tough singles. She has beaten japan top two player, beaten Wang Yihan in the China Team event and the Best of Korea Jang Soo Young. In her individual event she has beaten two chinese players Chen Wan and Han Li who has beaten player like Xing Ai Ying and Saina Nehwal.
Its is not easy to play 7 days straight of tough single. I agree she did not played well in the final but she has done her best for her country
azneric 07-28-2006, 07:33 AM overall i think kenn lim is one of the stablest player in the few even though he is not performing his best recently, he should play more international tournies
xijiayu 07-28-2006, 08:35 AM TCS played well in TO reaching last 16. If he continues to improve, we might see him to be included in the senior team by the end of the year. Apart from him, no young MS has impressed me so far.

yannie 08-03-2006, 03:01 AM Badminton: Five singles players to be axed
03 Aug 2006
K.M. Boopathy (boopathy@nst.com.my)
SOUTH Korea’s Malaysian doubles coach Tan Kim Her is expected to be named as the 2010-2012 Project squad coach while five singles players will be dropped from Rashid Sidek’s group of 13 players when the BA of Malaysia’s (BAM) coaching and training committee meets today.
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Thursday/Sport/badmin.JPG
Only Tan Chun Seang, Liew Darren and Lim Kenn have shown potential but Rashid may give the other five players until the end of the year, where another downsizing exercise is expected, to prove themselves.
And with Bukit Jalil Sports School-based players such as Arif Latif, Vountus Indra Mawan, Lok Chong Chieh and Chan Kwong Beng producing better results, they are set to compete for places in the Project Squad once they complete their SPM examinations at the end of the year.
Kim Her has been doing a decent job with the Korean team since last year where Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung have become one of the top pairs under his guidance and are among the title contenders in the World Championships in Madrid on Sept 18-24.
The current batch of doubles players in the Project Squad lack quality and this is one area BAM should take note of before hiring Kim Her.
It would be better to give Kim Her a free hand to identify new pairs rather than wasting his efforts on the existing squad.
"We have given the players almost a year (to prove themselves) and it is time to go for quality. The quality of the project squad should not be compromised," said Rashid.
"I will drop five but while waiting for Kim Her’s position to be finalised, the doubles squad will be maintained.
"He (Kim Her) has proven himself with the Korean team and its better for him to see the current batch before recommending changes."
Meanwhile, the world championships squad, which was confirmed on July 17, will be officially announced today.
It has also been decided that there will be no centralised training for the World Championships but this decision must be changed.
Although national chief coach Yap Kim Hock made a good decision to arrive in Madrid early, on Sept 6, to acclimatise, it would be better to have centralised training as well.
Hafiz Hashim, currently training under Misbun Sidek in Kelana Jaya, is one player who would definitely benefit from the centralised training and will also help build team unity.
Kim Hock does not look keen in pushing for centralised training but it could make a big difference in Madrid.

Rashid axes six players
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Six players, who had been stagnating in Rashid Sidek's Project 2010-12 squad, were dropped yesterday.
Among those axed was Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin, the longest serving member in the squad.
Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also axed Law Yew Thien, Lee Hock Lai, Hafiz Shaharuddin, Lim Chen Wet and Raymond Steven.
Four new faces from Bukit Jalil Sports School – Chan Peng Soon, Chang Han Pin, Tan Sin Lan and Lim Yin Loo – were promoted to the squad.
The squad, which was set up last March, is geared towards the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and the 2012 Olympics in London.
Rashid said the six players were dropped because they had failed to improved.
“Their progress has been slow. It has become a burden to keep them in the team. We would rather have quality players and focus on those with potential,” said Rashid.
The doors, however, are not closed on those axed. The BAM may absorb them as sparring partners for the elite group or provide opportunities for them to become coaches.
With yesterday's changes, Rashid will now have a total of 26 players under his wings.
“For now, we lack the quality in the team. Some are even lacking the basics. These players need 3-4 years to produce results,” said Rashid.
In order to further strengthen the back-up squad, former international Tan Kim Her will be recalled, said BAM president Datuk Nadzmi Salleh.
Kim Her is currently the South Korean national doubles coach.
“We have liased with Kim Her. But we need his answer before making any official announcement,” said Nadzmi after chairing the coaching and training committee meeting at Bukit Kiara yesterday.
At the same meeting yesterday, Nadzmi also commended the recent performances of the BJSS players and the elite men's singles and doubles players.
At the Asian Junior meet recently, 17-year-old Lydia Cheah became the first Malaysian to emerge as the girls' singles runner-up. Malaysia also had two runner-ups – Mohd Arif Abdul Latif-Vountus Indra Mawan (boys' doubles) and Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei (mixed doubles).

Jessica 08-04-2006, 07:31 AM Ok...I know it now...Thanks a lot to erin hakkinen...But i think the BAM has to do this way because we need some good and talented players...If the players have slow progess..its really wasting time and resources...They better find some others good players..
erin_hakkinen 08-04-2006, 08:02 AM Agree with Jessica. Cannot waste time, effort and money. i hope it will benefit both parties :o The higher you fall, the higher you bounce. This might be an opportunity to try other fields. Explore things you never explored before :)

My Genius Erin... :D "Our" MJs... *faint* I'm sure they will be cheered up by your quotes, well... when they do read this thread.
Well too bad they were dropped. Sometimes i feel bad for them.. but sometimes i think they deserve to be dropped based from their performance and commitment towards badminton. In a way i'm not suprised. But the good news is that they are not axed for good. I think they deserve the second chance.

well..they ARE our Juniors..MAS juniors i mean. OUR = MAS
What were you thinking my Genius Yannie
and we certainly hope they will cheer up a bit. That's my intention. Because i, i mean WE know, they DO read the thread :D
xijiayu 08-05-2006, 10:09 AM Although I feel sorry for those who have been dropped from Rashid's team, we have to keep only the best and potential players in the team. Anyway, YKH said they can still make it back to the squad if they produce good results in the tournament. The door is always opened for them.
ksooi 08-06-2006, 08:45 PM and we certainly hope they will cheer up a bit. That's my intention. Because i, i mean WE know, they DO read the thread :D
Well, if they are reading the threads, then they aren't training hard enuf and truly deserved to be dropped.......if they are reading the threads that means they are not in traininng coz there is no internet access in hostel....
There is always internet cafes or phone with MMS and GPRS. I can even log in BCBF using my phone. I don't think they can't do that either. Besides that they can't be training 24hrs right?
yannie 08-07-2006, 01:40 AM Ants is right... They confirm they DO read this thread... Even though there is no internet access in hostel, don't you think they ever go home, use mobile phones to go online or have fun in CCs during weekends?

kokcheng 09-03-2006, 12:56 AM How lucky the Malaysian juniors are? So,it's high time to pull up your socks.Be a fighter and fight to the last drop of your sweat. If you still lose,do not despair.Go back train harder.Indentify your weaknesses and correct them. Then, I am sure the girls supporting you all will be proud.I have watched Weifeng paying badminton since he was 12 years old.A very well-mannered,pleasant and unassuming guy.
