Who is your most favourite jump-smasher?

For me it's:
1) Fu Hai Feng
2) Lin Dan
3) Taufik

You can base it on whatever...no system really :D I like playing/watching doubles..that why I picked Fu ahead of the other 2 :D

actually if you watch Peter Rasmussen doing his prime 97-99 he was amazing at jumpsmashing, also Gade during 97-2001 did some fantastic jumpsmashes. Still i would rate Arbi as the best pure jump smasher ive ever seen. Amazing how that little guy could explode in a few seconds.

I bet if Chen Hong used an old 2U Ti10, he could get up to 330+kph. He can hit 305+kph with a 3U NS8000. :eek:

KKK has a pretty good jumping smash when the opponent serves a flick serve. Kim Dong Moon and Park Joo Bong are downright scary. They are already so tall, and when they jump, they loom over the whole court.

For singles, I like Yang Yang's jumping smash. Morten Frost had no answer.

Ng Boon Bee will put all the youngster to shame. This man can jump and pack a power you could ever imagine, also coming from those heavy wooded racquet. Ng Boon Bee first partner was Tan Yee Khan, practically unbeatable, won every major tournament. When Yee Khan retired, Punch became Boon Bee's double partner. There were dominating but Punch was also a single players.
Someone research this and post the results of tournament that Boon Bee has won, late 60's - 70's maybe ! Anyway he is the pioneer to jumping smashes and probably the best you have ever seen.

Does a smash strictly have to be jumped to have the power behind it?
I'll go out on a limb here but IMO that it doesn't. I don't jump mine. I regret that I lack the fitness to get airborne., and - if I could - I'd jump it just to get steepness and killer angles, but when I'm on form, it is a cannon! I have put a smash or two through Rexy Mainaky messing around playing halfcourt singles once (my proudest moment!). I really would like to get a speed gun on it and find out how quick it is... I kind of like my smash for accuracy too... the only worry is that if I have to retreat suddenly I don't have the option of smashing, whereas a more athletic player would be able to jump smash.

First question: Do you know anyone who is similar.. or pros who don't jump much but pack a powerful smash anyway?

Second question: Just a thought.. I really don't know why it is as quick as it is, I mean, it's not a particularly 'coached' smash, and I'd be damned to explain how I hit it, I just know when I connect with it properly! Not even got brawny arms like Popeye! He he heh. :D I think it takes a toll though, because now I've got some serious arm problems [hence more time talking about the game than playing it]. My mates say it's a 'whole body smash', but my coach, who knows the game well says there's nothing wrong with it [just don't expect a long playing life as a smash happy player, he says!]. I'd like to do some things to safeguard from getting the same injuries again, I'm tempted to start going to the gym to build muscle to protect it, but equally I don't want to be overdoing it ....

Oh, and my vote for smash goes to Zhao Jian Hua for efficiency. Great deception, power and timing. For sheer power it probably has to be Fu Haifeng. The man hammers the crap out of the shuttle... but wait...lol, think of Robot Wars, there should be the following categories:

[B]Style: I'm going to be a purist and go for Zhao Jian Hua. Good at all types of smash. For modern players, Taufik. All the different kinds, and though his round the head is not so amazing, his backhand smash is a ****in' screamer!
Control: Who's the most accurate? I quite like Lin Dan's accuracy... I can't think of an occasion where I've seen him waste them. Also, he jumps damn high, and is clever at making his opponents lift crosscourt... right into the path of the best round-the head smash in the business.
Damage Has to be Fu Haifeng: I saw one smash clocking over 300 kph. Straight down the middle against Clark and Blair in the WC final. It bounced on the T and next bounced just behind the tramlines. Scary as ****, and he didn't even bother to jump that high... why bother when you're built like a grizzly bear and have already picked your spot???!!!
Aggression: A difficult category, all the snarlers and growlers who are in your face before the smash, let the bomb drop, then fist pump as they put it away. I think Rexy was of this breed as is his protege KKK. [As am I, but I can't put my name in such exalted company... ha ha ha!] What do you think?:D Who deserves this badge of honour? Simon Archer seems a possible contender, as does Zheng Bo. Man, that guy is in your face. I love it!:D

Its a good way to play when 50% of the time the opponent can retrive your shots but nowadyas players has improve their defense a lot thus it almost impossible to kill with one shot. Of coz most star player can take the 2nd shot after JUMP SMASH but its very engery consuming as you has to dash at full speed to the next spot.

Human can only run 100m in full speeds not 10000m... so how long can you sustain those kinda speed.

Now, Ms is more on rally and finding open spaces... We are more likely to see REally High jumping smash in doubles nowadays.. where yo double players can cover the space u left behind...

The beauty of badminton, its not a all power game... u see tony&candra seldom JUMP to full height to smash.. Just a little to make use of body mass & gravity.!

Arby's play would be too one dimentional for todays game, and unless u have other skills like wonderful shotmaking like gade and lindan to compliment the leaping power-smash, one cant go really far. BUt the point of the discussion is really not how useful the leaping smash is or how it should be employed, but how beautiful and exciting it is.

But by the way i am a defensive player, when up against an aggrasive player i just keep sending the shot back with minimal risk and error untill the oponent makes the mistake or get tired or get pissed...which ever comes first. Still the wonder of a full blooded jumping power smash is always nice to see.

Jumping smash is the most attractive of badminton game move...

I used to smash smash & smash only when playing in tournaments...
But found out that usually average players smash arent as effective, now in tournament i usually drop & lop to open up opponents.
It's totally a different kinda game for the international... for average player is almost commit suicide to play like them.

This is the way to reduce impulsive force.The bended legs lenghten the time impact when the shuttlers landed and thus,reduce impulsive force.It's all about physics theory.

Fu Hai Feng is the best jump-smasher. so powerful. He holds the fastest smash record which is 336km/h. amazing speed!
Lee Chong Wei is also good.
However, the best backhand smasher goes to Taufik Hidayat. dont remember the speed, around 260km/h

I noticed that BCL doesn't has a very steep and accurate jump smash but I find he doesn't perform it often because he's so tall. Chen hong and LCW are the best. Watch the youtube video of WC 06 with Chen hong vs taufik, and watch how many times taufik goes to the right when Chen Hong's smash goes left. LCW just for he's crosscourts.

Zhao Jianhua - as mentioned earlier in the thread (last year!); there is no way to predict where he was aiming until the shuttle passes the net.

Hariyanto Arbi - similar to ZJH but a lot more tricky.

Sigit Budiarto - did I see him jump metres high at the Glasgow world championship? Not only are they really high, they can be supremely deceptive.

Nowadays I suppose Fu Haifeng takes the cake - all power focused into that single spot on the racquet.

the pic is taking from rear left hand side of the court when lindan is airbourne, about to execute his jump smash, while leehyunil on the other far side of the court, is standing ready, looking at lindan, to receive the smash... the expression in leehyunil's face is priceless... its like almost saying.. Based on recent tournaments Jung Jae-Sung is getting my vote. Not 100% consistent, but when he really gets hold of one (his trademark shout usually accompanies these) it's NOT coming back. He's an absolutely tiny man (less than 5' 6'', by the looks of it), which makes it all the more impressive.

The grandfather of all doubles jump smasher was Ng Boon Bee at slightly over 5 feet stature. Opponents use to be bewildered for since the shorter Ng would play at the back and the taller Tan Yee Khan at the front until the shuttle hit their eye from Ng's leaping smash.

The next great doubles jump smashers Kim Moon Soo, Cheah Soon Kit, Rexy, Bambang, Sigit, Chandra and Ha.

For me it's Tang Xianwu and Ng Boon Bee..should see how those guys play. Tang was solidly built..even Rudy Hartono acknowledged Tang as the greatest then. Tang was originally from Indonesia..so is Hou Chiang Chang and Fang kai Xiang. Ng Boon Bee was the exponent of the backcourt leaping smashes during his heyday. Anyway that's history.

In addition to JJS, I think I'm going to have to nominate Keita Masuda. He has excellent side-on technique, great jump height and good rotation (and a cracking shout:D). He's the most powerful Japanese smasher I've seen so far.

Same both smashes are very good. BCL's smash is amazing. I wish I could jump smash like him. It seriously does look as if they stop in the air. They go so high:O and have so much time to play there shots. AMAZING!

BCL does have a nice smash, the only thing bad is that he doesn't attack often enough. He focuses on being deceptive and rally to much.
