Too bad she lost. Saina was a fine young lady. Manage to talk to her few times during the PO. It was tough for her playing hard games. I'm not suprised she lost. She need to improved on her conditioning. Anyway she is still young.. i'm sure we will see more of her in the future wining titles.

It is tough to back up for another tournament only a few days after --- she is probably still basking in her glory in the Philippines Open.

I am very happy for Saina Nehwal. I watched her played well at the Commonwealth Games, Melbourne just weeks ago. I told Saina, herself, that she will one day be a World Singles Champion. But I didn't think she believed me. Saina is only 16.
Cheers... chris@ccc

Tragically, I think there are probably a few 16-year-olds in China who may be able to beat her even now. It will be interesting to watch the coming World Junior Championships.

MikeJ 05-30-2006, 02:37 AM I was able to watch the finals of the Philippine Open in the Philsports Arena. :D My friends and I (and probably most of the audience) liked how Saina Nehwal played. I can say that most of us became instant fans of her. I hope she'll continue her ascent in the WS ranking. :D
Her style reminds me a little of Susi Susanti's style of playing. :D
saina fan 05-30-2006, 11:13 AM good to see many fans of saina:D

UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENT: Saina Nehwal is the first Indian to win a 4-star badminton tournament.

There is a new teenage sporting sensation in Indian sports. Move over Sania Mirza as now it is the turn of another Hyderabadi girl to make the headlines.
Saina Nehwal has became the first Indian woman to win a 4-star badminton tournament and her parents Usha and Harvir Singh Nehwal are on cloud nine.
After all their 16-year-old daughter has done what no Indian has done till now.
Saina's win in the Philippines Open saw her parents, both of whom are former badminton players, celebrating.
And now they proudly show off the medals and trophies that their daughter has won till date.
"Saina was was a very different kind of child. At the age of seven-eight months we were worried about her because she was very serious and would never smile. One day, I took her to the badminton court and when she saw a game, she started laughing," her father Harivir Singh says.
Saina's talent was noticed when she was just nine and former all England champion P Gopichand took her under his wing when she was 13.
"I think her achievement is phenomenal because no Indian woman has done it so far. Also to do so when she is just 16 is great. She has got many tournaments to play in future. It is remarkable not only for her but also for Indian badminton," Gopichand says.
Saina's game is simple as she relies on power to subdue her opponents.
It was on display at the 2006 Commonwealth Games when she was part of the team which won the team bronze.
And now her parents want her to go for the biggest prize of them all.
"Determination accha hai uska. Mehnati bhi hai. Woh accha Olympian banegi aur jeetegi (She is very determined and works hard. I want her to win a medal in the Olympics)," her mother Usha Nehwal adds.
At 16 Saina's best is yet to come. She celebrated her birthday just 10 days back and her parents could not have asked for a better gift from her.

For all Saina's fans, it is good that you are singing her song. I
However, I think it is still early days. To expect her to beat top Chinese players would be very hard. This could be her only win for a long while.
Just on that last game with Julia Wong of Malaysia in the Philippines Open, I think Julia could have won if she had attacked Saina more. To be fair, I think Julia should get some accolades too. Well done Julia for reaching the final.
saina fan 05-31-2006, 03:21 PM "I am shocked and still don't know how this happened," said not Saina after the Philippines Open, but Xu Huaiwen, world number four, after she was defeated by Saina. "This kid will be on the top in a year," proclaimed the disappointed yet impressed Xu after the game.
This is what Xu said after her loss in the philippine open.

Hi hcyong,
Yes, you are correct. But so far I can find two, namely, India's Saina Newhal and China's Wang Lin, gifted and talented. It will now depend on how hard they train for the coming World Junior Championships.
Perhaps, they will meet each other at the Finals.
Cheers... chris@ccc
MikeJ 06-01-2006, 11:39 AM I hope more sponsors will support her now that her talent is being recognized. :)
One of the things that endeared her to the audience was the fact that during the quarter and semi finals, she was wearing a shirt with her name in black pen ink written on strips of masking tape stuck on the back of her shirt. That's in contrast to the well funded japanese team with beautifully matching uniforms.
I hope she'll be invited to play in this year's MVP Cup. :D

Your sentiments could not have been at a better time, and going to first causes, Nehwal's win.:p
Mittal Champions Trust (India) is essentially providing carte blanche full support to participate in any international tourneys. Also, Yonex-Sunrise is stepping in. So, invitations would only help to better baddy!
And as Gopi, the recently appointed Head Coach at Badminton India, is reported to have said earlier "If we are able to produce a stream of players who can perform well at the international level, media attention will come and it will make a big difference to the sports." Surely seems the recipe for popularity!:D The Indian Open 07 will be revived by India and hosted as a 5* Grand Prix event! Then there is Project 2010 with a definite eye for medals at the Commonewealth Games, and India is also gearing up for WC09. More on this in this report (http://sport.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1600326.cms).

That's a nice one, Maz! Caught us by surprise!
I don't think I can take another one with her as security here is much tighter than in MEC. Unless I can borrow ants VIP pass (or even Glen's of Philippines) and steal a photo with Saina, without ants intruding. ;)
MikeJ 06-06-2006, 09:23 AM This is a great thread, but shouldn't this be in the "Professional Players" sub-forum? Maybe we can ask Kwun to move this thread so that it won't get lost in the "2006 Tournaments" sub-forum. :D

Dr Singh
You're a lucky father with such a talent as Saina. As I've mentioned in my other thread, I've seen your lovely daughter play in Singapore and met her again in Melbourne this March. What a change a year or two can make! She was in devastating form during the MCG and many of us here, particularly those from Australia like Chris, Maz, BadFever, Kim, FEND, had a chance to witness her brilliant display.
Are you a badminton player yourself and did you influence Saina in taking up the game? How was Saina when she was young?
Do give her your encouragement, especially when she is 'down' as it will happen from time to time, and start to treat her like a young lady, not a child anymore! We in BF will be following her progress closely and wish her well in her training and future development.
Please say a big hello to Saina on our behalf! :p
MikeJ 06-30-2006, 03:20 AM Dear Dr. Harvir Singh,
First of all, I'd like to say that your daughter is very blessed to have a very loving and supportive father. :)
If you and your daughter Saina have the time, please join our local (Philippine) badminton forum. Here is the link to our site:

Our local badminton players can learn a lot from your daughter's experience and talent.
Thank you for your time.

Jun. 30, 2006
A 12-member junior team, led by teenage sensation Saina Nehwal, would be seen in action at the Asian Junior Badminton Championship in Kuala Lampur from July 3-9. Saina, seeded second in the tournament, has got a bye in the first round. The team members are scheduled to leave for Malaysia tonight. The 16-year-old girl from Hyderabad reached the pre-quarterfinal in the previous edition but with a recent Grand Prix title -- Philippines Open -- under her belt, the world no 42 would look to prove herself in the junior circuit as well. World no 39 and top seed in the tournament, Korea's Jang Soo Young and third seed Xing Aiying of Singapore could pose a challenge for the Indian starlet

She has envey to those who take the honour on the stage that is why always keen to touch that level by diong at least 6 hr practice daily. She is 12 standard student but now a days finds no time to go to school. Our full support is with her and always prey to almight to help her in her mission. I wish that every body becomes like her in the game.

chris-ccc 12-24-2006, 03:29 AM Greetings & A Merry Christmas to Everyone,
Just received this article from The Hindu News Update Service.
If 2005 was tennis sensation Sania Mirza's year, 2006 belonged to Saina Nehwal.
Well Done Saina !!! :):):)
Cheers... chris@ccc
====== start article ======
Indian Badminton celebrated Saina's emergence
New Delhi, Dec. 24 (PTI): Circa 2006 celebrated the birth of a new sporting star in Saina Nehwal, who burst onto the international badminton scene with feats which no Indian shuttler had achieved ever before.
Sixteen-year-old Saina won a major international title, stood at the runner up podium at World Junior Championship, helped Indian team to a bronze medal finish in Commonwealth Games and made some big names of the world bite the dust.
In her very first year in international circuit, the Hyderabad-based teenager was India's top women badminton player, climbing a staggering 87 rungs in the singles rankings to attain her career-best ranking of world number 27 three weeks back.
Starved of sporting icons, the media and the badminton fraternity hailed Saina as the brightest prospect to emerge from the country in years.
It took 21 years for an Indian to win the prestigious All England title when Pullela Gopichand won it in 2001, after Prakash Padukone's famous 1980 triumph.
Shuttle queen Aparna Popat has done the country proud in many international meets and Saina emerged as an inheritor of that legacy.
There were other proud moments for the sport as well with the country earning a quarterfinal appearance in Thomas Cup and a bronze medal in the mixed team event of the Commonwealth Games.
India also swept the honours in South Asian Games in Colombo, winning five gold, four silver medals and one bronze medal.
If 2005 was tennis sensation Sania Mirza's year, 2006 belonged to Saina, who showed a burning desire to excel and who dreams of winning an Olympic medal.
Always regarded as a promise in the domestic arena, the Gopichand protege even took her admirers by surprise by the way she blossomed in the international scene.
Saina created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a four-star badminton grand prix when she won the Philippines Open title in Manila in May. She went on to record sterling wins in other events as the badminton faternity world over took notice of the young girl from India.
She finished the year on a high when she defended her Indian Satellite Open title in Mumbai.
But above all Saina challenged the superiority of the nimble-footed Chinese, Malaysian and Koreans and showed that will and guts could transcend any barrier.
That she would make it a memorable year was evident when she scored big wins in the Uber Cup qualifiers in Jaipur in February.
India upset Thailand 3-2 with young Saina showing nerves of steel to overcome the challenge of Sarojita Chansrisukot in the decider of the thrilling tie.
Although India's hopes of making it to the final round were dashed by Singapore, Saina played another stunner against Xing Aiying before losing narrowly.
In the Melbourne Games, a bold move by coach Vimal Kumar saw India bag the bronze medal. After initial hiccups, Kumar chose to play Saina in the singles in place of the seasoned Popat and the teenager did not let her coach down.

Perhaps it’s more than coincidence that a mere shuffle of letters connects India’s tennis queen and the country’s badminton princess. But if the career graph of the former is anything to go by, Saina should brace herself for a bumpy ride. After exploding on the scene in 2006, the Haryana girl, who turns 17 in March, will be eyeing the national title (she has been runner-up in last two years) and the Junior World championship gold (finalist last year) among other international events

Saina Nehwal: The year celebrated the birth of a new sporting star in Saina, who burst onto the international badminton scene with feats which no Indian woman shuttler had achieved before.
Sixteen-year-old Saina won a major international title (the Philippines Open), stood runner-up podium at the World Junior Championship, helped the Indian team to a bronze-medal finish in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and made some big names of the world bite the dust.
In her very first year on the international circuit, the Hyderabad-based teenager was India’s top women badminton player, climbing a staggering 87 rungs in the singles rankings to attain her career-best ranking of world number 27.
The Gopichand protege challenged the superiority of the nimble-footed Chinese, Malaysian and Koreans and showed that will and guts could transcend any barrier.
Her scalps included Malaysia’s Sutheaswari Mudukasan and Pei Xian Julia Wong, Japan’s Imai Sachiyo, world No. 4 Xu Huaiwen of Germany, and South Korea’s Bae Youn Joo.[/quote]

Carbonex8200LT 01-16-2007, 06:37 AM Best Of Luck For Malaysian Open 07 To Saina :)
Krisna 01-16-2007, 09:10 AM Saina defeated Indonesia's current Junior National Champion, Sylvinna Kurniawan in the 2nd round of the 2006 World Championship in rubber sets. It was a close match, as both players are known for their fighting spirit, and could have gone either way. But we admit Saina is more powerful.
This year, Sylvinna won't play as a Junior anymore because she will become 19 sometime in 2007. So, another good player that will compete with Saina for the 2007 Junior World Championship (yes, they have it every year now) will be 17 year old Maria Febe from Indonesia. She was defeated by the eventual champion from China (who later on defeated Saina as well)...
Febe, like Sylvinna, is being coached by a Chinese legend, Fang Kaixiang. She did not win any 4 star tournament like Saina, but Febe did win one Satellite tournament. We shall see how well they progress after one year. :)
Badminton is more fun when there are so many countries that have great teenage badminton queens... :D

Carbonex8200LT 01-30-2007, 12:05 AM The hindu report
She moves with measured strides. She hits the shuttle flat with power and panache, straining every sinew. There aren't many players who can play quite like Saina Nehwal in India. In the domestic circuit, women are not used to her pace and style of play. Junior National champion Aditi Mutatkar (PSPB) found the speed at which Saina (PSPB) played quite unnerving in the women's final of the BSNL senior National badminton championship at the Secretariat Sports Club here on Sunday. Her best was not enough as Saina, the top seed, raced to a 21-19, 21-16 to clinch her maiden women's singles title from three successive finals.
A deceptive player, Aditi fought back from being down 1-7 in the first game to take the lead 13-12 when Saina netted a return. Aditi matched Saina at the net and from the baseline with some delicate drops.
Initially, she created problems and was dominating the rallies. But once Saina started to get her drops and overhead smashes going, Aditi had no choice but to relent. When Saina is set, it's next to impossible to even contemplate defeating her. That's exactly what happened in the second game
chris-ccc 01-30-2007, 12:35 AM Hi Carbonex8200LT,
Thank you for the report.
I think Saina Nehwal has not only raised her own personal performance recently(in terms of her own World Ranking), but she has also raised the performances of many India's potential Ladies Badminton players as well.
Well Done Saina... for everyone at Badminton in India !!!
Cheers... chris@ccc

That is awesome!
I want to see more competition for the Chinese women... :p Indonesia will groom our own champions, of course. Then, we shall see who gets the 2012 or 2016 Olympic gold then... :)
So far the Women Singles gold medals in from the four Olympic games that had badminton [1992, 1996, 2000, 2004] are distributed:
1 for Indonesia
1 for Korea
2 for China
2008... er... I think it will go to China... :p
2012? Up for grabs!
2016? [if they still have badminton as an Olympic sport...]
chikkubhai 01-30-2007, 05:03 PM wooow, congrats Saina. Continue to make us proud.

chikkubhai 02-27-2007, 01:31 PM Hey I am not a sports editor but I got some news for this thread.
Recently one of my BC friends sent me some links of Phil06 games up for viewing.
He sent me three uploaded files, however only one of them seems to be working. Unfortunately I cant send him an email because it was sent from megaupload itself and not using any email address I can use to contact back.

If any of you guys also got these messages please try to trace this guy and let him know that the part two and three are not working. So there is no use of downloading any of these files as all the three together build the main file.
And looks like he really wanted to upload the game, but made a mistake, as was seen from the extension of the file in Part 1, unlike what I initially thought was phishing.

Carbonex8200LT 04-10-2007, 01:24 AM New Delhi: Promising shuttler Saina Nehwal has supported Badminton Association of India’s decision to restrict players’ participation in international tournaments to attend training camps, saying it was important to improve fitness level to go beyond preliminary rounds in competitions. “I think we need time for training to stay fit. It is not first and second round always. We have to move beyond that at tough competitions. We have to be extra fit to compete with other fast Asian players,” Saina said. “The movement on the court plays an important part and to improve on this aspect of the game we need time for training,” she said before leaving for Malaysia where she will participate in the Badminton Asia Championship today.

Cheung 10-23-2007, 10:09 AM I watched Saina play at the recent Macau Open. I took a special interest in watching her just because of this thread. It was her quarterfinal match against the Korean Jun JaeYung. I think the performance was creditable but there is one aspect of her game which can be raised a few notches. I'm talking about her footwork.
Consider foot positioning - her feet positioning is pretty much OK. I see sometimes when she is wrongfooted, the footwork becomes less clean. Sometimes when she does the little hop to pretension the legs, both feet land on the floor slightly out of synchrony. This slows down her first step when moving towards the shuttle. Not so noticeble when she's fresh but becomes more visible when she tires.
Speed of legs - on an adjacent court, two chinese ladies were having a singles game. Compare their movement with Saina's and you'll see a big difference. Saina doesn't have the same acceleration and rhythm changes when moving towards the shuttle. She can slowly (it's all relative) accelerate but her movement seems wanting for change of speed.
Tiredness - I saw after the first half of the 2nd game, Saina was having difficulty in reaching the shuttle and just reaching them a split second slower. This would get her into more difficulties because this becomes a cumulative effect. If her acceleration can be improved, I think the movement can be more efficient and she'll be less prone to fatigue in the game.
Mind you, Jun Jaeyung is no pushover and Saina did well to nearly grab the first game.

..(i haven't seen Saina played before), but could her "less than clean footwork" be the result of her being fatigue (knowing she's playing in the QF Rd.)?!..
avataar 10-23-2007, 03:17 PM Saina has had direct entry into the main draw at the Dutch and also in the current Danish Open. If memory serves me right she was also a direct entry into the main draw at Macau.
Gopichand has been working with her and accompanied her to Macau. His tutleage is proving beneficial as can be seen from her performances.
She is definitely in the running to be a serious title contender at the Vietnam Open in early Nov
Saina at the Danish Open tomorrow - after two consecutive QF apperances in Macau and the Dutch Open a tough battle awaits Saina in RD1 facing 3rd seed Chinese Zhu Lin. This match will test Saina's all round play and mental strenghth and a prelude to see where her game is against more reputed and tougher opposition.

Possibly. It's became more noticable as the match progressed.
Fatigue is a funny thing - it's affected by mental condition as well as physical condition. Both factors may both apply.
I think those details I mentioned may not be noticable to average spectator. I find it very interesting to compare each player's movements and footwork skills.
Good luck to Saina in all her matches:).

Thank you. I'm sure the coaches have spotted it. I hope that a different source pointing out the same deficiencies will help add extra motivation. I must admit I would never have realised the changes of acceleration on my own. I had a very good singles coach who taught me the movement (but now I'm too old.:):))
It's great to see Saina acheiving more. Funnily enough, we have an ex-Indian team player coming to our club in HK. Maybe that's perked up my interest in Indian players.:)
Krisna 10-25-2007, 11:49 PM I might be wrong... but I think Saina is better off playing for India in the World Junior Championship in NZ this week... instead of the Denmark Open... More playing experience and help India win something... A moral boost for Indian badminton in general...

Olympic stars have been in her eyes, ever since she picked up a badminton racquet. But 18-year-old Saina Nehwal, national women’s champion and world number 30, knows that dreams don’t translate into reality on their own. A fan of Roger Federer, Saina hopes to see the tennis champion in action at the Beijing Olympics. But her real focus is on badminton and making an honest attempt at Olympic glory. “I am quite young. I’ve already played at the Commonweath Games and the Uber Cup. I have many more big matches to come,” says Saina in this interview. Excerpts...
What went through your mind when you qualified for the Olympics?
It has always been my dream to participate in the Olympics and win a medal. I know that won’t be easy. Qualifying for the Olympics is only the first step. Now, I have to play consistently and improve my ranking. I have gained good experience by playing on the international circuit and have a good idea of how the top players play. This experience will help me improve my game. I am currently working on my game at a two-month camp with coaches from various parts of the world. I hope to improve all aspects of my game.
Both your parents played badminton. Did picking up a racquet come naturally to you?
Although I was quite active in most sports, I started playing badminton fairly late. I was into karate for a long time. I took up badminton at the behest of my father, at a summer camp at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad. Badminton started as just as another activity, but soon, I started participating in tournaments and winning.
Did these wins motivate you to take badminton more seriously?
The wins made me very competitive. Having always been a runner, my stamina was good and, as I never liked letting the shuttlecock touch the ground, I would lunge and try to hit everything. In tournaments, I participated in both singles and doubles, playing non-stop from morning till evening. Once I started winning, I just wanted to get better and better.
You started playing in the senior circuit at a fairly young age.
Yes. I was only 14 when I participated in the senior circuit. I hadn’t played any under-19 tournaments at that time and I was obviously a little hesitant. Again, big names like Aparna Popat playing in the senior circuit then and I knew I had to raise my game.
How difficult was it for you to make the transition from the junior to senior level?
Initially, I lost a few matches, but I had my share of wins. In 2004, I lost to Aparna Popat. But then in October 2005, I defeated her at the Asian Satellite Badminton Championship, which I went on to win. Aparna was ranked 26th in the world at that time, so the victory was an amazing boost to my confidence.
Is it easier to win as a newcomer, when the burden of expectations doesn’t exist, or when one has become an established name?
Once you start winning, everyone automatically expects you to keep on winning. But I don’t let other the expectations of other people put me under pressure. I have played against most of the top players in the world now and have had many close matches. I keep learning from each match and focus on working hard.
What do you feel about the Chinese domination of the game?
There is no such thing as Chinese domination. The world number 1, a Chinese, is very good, but the rest are beatable. One of the major differences between the top three or four players in the world and the others is that they train together and get to practise together. When you have the world’s top two players practising together, the level of competition is high and this helps both players improve their strokes and stamina.
How are you preparing for the Beijing Olympics? What is your idea of ideal match practice?
I want to go abroad, play a few more international matches and get quality match practice before the Olympics. The Super Series events in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, all scheduled for next month, are on my agenda.
Have you set any year-end goals for yourself?
I don’t want to predict what rank I will have at the end of this year or the next. Of course, I want to be the world’s best player one day. I am waiting for the right moment. Till then, I hope to remain fit and injury free. That is all that matters right now.

What does it take to make a badminton star like Saina Nehwal? Ask her father Harvir Singh.
If Saina battles it out on the badminton court against the world’s best players, it has been no less a battle for her father to let her do the same.
Rarely a middle-class family can think of spending half of the monthly income on an eight-year-old child’s training without knowing if the gamble would pay off.
But Harvir Singh, a Scientist with the Directorate of Oilseeds Research Hyderabad, opted to go by the advice of PSS Nani Prasad Rao, the then badminton coach of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), who saw immense potential in the girl.
“I met Nani Prasad Rao in December, 1998, at Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad. Saina was standing with a badminton racket on the court and he asked her to play. After watching her game, he said,‘She has the potential and if you want to train her, bring her to me as a summer trainee,” Harvir said.
The tough journey had started. Saina had to be taken to the stadium every day early in the morning and the distance from the house was 20 km.
“It was a challenge for both of us because I had to wake up early so that we could reach the stadium by 6 am. The training session used to last for about two hours.
After attending the training session, Saina had to attend school. This way I had to drive my scooter around 50 km daily as Saina, apart from attending rigorous practice sessions, had to concentrate on studies,” her father explained.
The impact of this tough routine began to show in the first week as Saina would often fall asleep on the back seat.
Sensing the danger, Saina’s mother started accompanying them on the two-wheeler. This continued for three months.
Ultimately, the family had to arrange a house near the stadium in 1999. This time the distance was about 7 km from the stadium.
But the travelling ordeal did not end here as Saina was asked to attend evening training sessions as well.
“With an extra training session, the travelling expenditure rose to Rs 150 per day. Added to this was the cost of training. Shuttles, racket, shoes, guttings and what not had to be purchased regularly. I spent around Rs 12,000 every month to keep her going those days,” Harvir said.
But how did the family manage such high-cost training? Saina’s father revealed that he had to sacrifice his savings.
“I started withdrawing money from my provident fund. Sometimes it was Rs 30,000 and other times it was nearly Rs 1 lakh. It happened more than five times when I had to shell out money from my PF savings due to Saina’s various requirements,” said Harvir.
He stated that the tight-rope walk continued till 2002 until Yonex Sunrise sports offered to sponsor Saina’s kit.
“It came as a big relief. Fortunately, she got BPCL support late in 2004. Ultimately, she was spotted by Mittal Sports Trust in December, 2005.
“But I had never disclosed to Saina my financial difficulties fearing that she might get disturbed knowing that her father was left with no savings for the future,” he said.
When asked if they got any help from the sports authorities, the answer said it all.
“Till 2003, she was getting Rs 600 per month from the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It was raised to Rs 2,500 in June, 2003. You can understand how I could have managed,” Harvir said.
Apart from the training cost, hefty telephone bills put extra financial burden on the family when Saina started touring foreign countries for events.
The byte-crazy media played a part too. Wherever she went, be it the Philippines or South Korea, her phone kept ringing.
“A major part of the prize money that Saina got from big competitions like the Philippines Open and World Junior Championship was utilised in paying her mobile bills, which were between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 in the touring months,” he said.
But was the prize money enough when she began her career? “Saina was given just Rs 300 as prize money after winning the under-10 state level competition, held in Tirupati in 1999. The period between 1999-2004 was very trying for the family as we did not get any sponsor for her,” Harvir said.
It was not only the financial burden but the risk of lagging behind on the educational front which added to the pressure.
Saina had to skip examinations twice. She did not take her first year intermediate exams because of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and later in May, she could not write supplementary exams as she was in the Philippines.
At present she is studying in the second year at Saint Ann’s College, Mehdipatnam Hyderabad. Ironically, the family, despite her big success at the international level, has not been able to celebrate much.
“She has never been to any party, any restaurant or cinema in the past seven years. When the electronic media personnel visited my home in May last year for shooting of a programme, I could not even offer them sweets. Do I need to explain why,” he asked. — PTI

cooler... Thank you for posting "Saina: The untold story".
Yes, there are always untold stories behind all our Badminton heroes. Much sacrifice is usually made in order to succeed.
It's great that Harvir Singh brought up Saina the way he did. Anyone who have met and spoken to Saina would know what I mean. It was a privilege for me to have met Saina. :):):)
We are happy that Saina did well in the last 3 tournaments just weeks ago, namely;
Singapore Super Series 2008: Finishing as the last 4 participants
Indonesia Super Series 2008: Finishing as the last 16 participants
Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2008: Finishing as the last 8 participants
We wish that one day Saina would have time to read and post at Badminton Central like her father did. :):):)

drkishorehadal 07-10-2008, 12:37 PM Its heartening to see the rapid strides made by Saina at the global level and saddening at the same time to see the plight of parents who risk their entire life savings for their ward's future.
Hope the Government and media realise this and support Saina in her future endeavours.
Keep going Saina and make us all Indian's proud at Beijing olympics.
huangkwokhau 07-10-2008, 07:57 PM Saina is planning to train Indonesia with some clubs....I do not know when she will decide as she needs more sparring partner.

Saina Nehwal is a precocious talent, but even she never thought that she could be face to face with her dream so soon in her fledgling international career.
Come August and the 18-year-old badminton player from Hyderabad will be in Beijing playing for the country at the Olympics.
Winning a medal playing in her first Olympics might be too much to expect from her, but anyone who has followed her game in the last two years would not hesitate to wager on her as a dark horse. Her amazing run-up to the Games will only tempt the punter to put his money on her.
At 18, she is well aware of the expectations and the accompanying pressure, but Saina does not appear in any sort of stress even though her life at this point of time revolves around her game and national coach Pullela Gopichand.
Saina has been undergoing extensive training at the Gachibowli Stadium here and nothing seem to escape Gopichand's keen eye and analytical mind. The former All England champion is quietly shaping up her talent.
"I will take Olympics as any other tournament. I have grown up dreaming of an Olympics medal and I can only feel the enormity of the situation when I get on to the court in Beijing. I will try my best not to take any pressure and play freely," Saina told IANS after a rigorous work-out.
"World's top players will be there and it will be a big occasion for me. It will not be easy for me to win a medal, but I will give my best shot. This is just my second year of my international career and I am really happy that I will be part of the Indian contingent in Beijing.
"It is also a big occasion for my family. I know that because my parents were club level players and to see their daughter in Olympics is a big thing. But my parents do not talk about it for fear of putting pressure on me," she added.
The fact that she cracked the top-20 of singles rankings this month has given her the belief that she could fight it out and has the ability to do so.
Her performance in the Singapore Open, where she became the first Indian women to reach the semi-final of a Super Series event, and quarter-final appearance in Thailand Open, placed her at World No 18.
"I am happy that I am peaking at the right time for Olympics. The results in the last two tournaments have been a big confidence booster. I played well against seeded players and it has given me the belief that I can take on the big ones."
"I gave a tough fight to Chinese top-seed Xie Xingfang. I was running neck and neck but at 16-all I made mistakes and that took the game away from me. I will have to hold my nerve at such critical moments."
When girls of her age might be freaking out, Saina is happy to have nothing but badminton on her mind.
Her day starts at 5 a.m and she reaches the stadium by 6 a.m for training with Gopichand. She leaves at 10.30 a.m and after some rest is back on the court at 3.30 p.m for the evening session.
"I am following this regimen for quite some time now. I hardly get time to do anything else. Once in a while, I go out to see a movie for relaxation. I am not missing out anything in life because at the moment my focus is only on badminton," Saina said.
She is a second-year commerce student at St. Ann's College, but hardly gets time to open her books.
"I hardly get time to go to my college. But the teachers and principal are very supportive and they give me the freedom to take my exams whenever I am prepared," she said.
Gopichand said if not in this Olymics, Saina is certainly destined for bigger things in a couple of years.
"She has the potential to win an Olympics medal. She has just started her career. She will play in at least two more Olympics. Give her some time and she has the talent to bring a medal. Last three months she has shown tremendous improvement."
"It depends on individuals as to how they soak the pressure in big events like Olympics. There will be ten other top-ranked girls playing more or less at the same level and much will depend on how well she plays on that particular day," Gopichand said.

Saina Nehwal is a precocious talent, but even she never thought that she could be face to face with her dream so soon in her fledgling international career......
.
Loh... Thank you for the article.
Saina Nehwal is a precocious talent indeed.
Wishing ALL THE BEST to Saina at the Olympic Games, Beijing 2008.
:):):)
.
limsy 07-17-2008, 06:03 AM she will have four olympic(if she play until 30 years old...)...oh...so good...the 1st indeed
george@chongwei 07-17-2008, 07:45 AM she will make India proud of her:)
Saina Nehwal is modest but has a positive mental attitude and this is very good for her future. She cherishes challenges, learns from them and trains hard to overcome her weaknesses and her opponents at the next opportunity.

Hyderabad
A tough draw is the last thing an Olympic-bound athlete would look for but Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal says she does not fear being pitted against top-ranked rivals in Beijing as difficult matches only bring out the best in her.
Saina said she would happily take a tough draw against the likes of world number one Xie Xingfang of China and Tine Rasmussen of Denmark as it would give her an opportunity test herself against the best.
"Both of them are excellent players but I would like to fight it out with these two players. I don't get scared playing top players. I just love playing against such players. If I beat them its really good. It doesn't matter if I lose and would give a good fight in the next match," the 18-year-old said.
"They are not easy to beat. But I will do my best. I have to really work hard and need lot of stamina and I am doing it in that regard," she said.
"The thing is that they make the opponents run a lot in the court and basically I need to make them run and pick up all the schedules and be ready for the smash," she said.
After putting up a stupendous performance in the Asian circuit and reaching a career-best world ranking of 16, Saina is hoping to continue her fine form in Beijing.
"I am training extensively for the past three weeks. Im looking forward for the next two weeks on how well I train. I am quite fit and feeling great now. I am confident that I would play well and put up a good show," she said in Hyderabad.
Confident about her performance despite being pitted against top players from China and other countries, Saina said, "Playing against top 20 players of the world will be very tough. But I have previously won against top players and thus achieved 16th rank, that too being only for two-years in the circuit.
"I am quite confident that if I match their speed I can beat the top players including those from China. If I play my best, I can," she said.
"It's not impossible to beat them but I need to be fit like them," said Saina, the lone female shuttler representing India in Beijing. Anup Sridhar is the other player representing India in Badminton.
Saina said she does not feel any pressure going into the mega event as there are hardly any expectations from her.
"Expectations and pressure will always be there. But they (rivals) are seniors in their 20s and 30s and they will be under more pressure," she said.
Getting a medal at the mega event will be fulfilling a very big dream, Saina said, adding "As a child it was always my dream to participate in Olympics and win a gold medal."
Saina, who pulled off sensational wins against higher-ranked players at Singapore and Thailand this year, is presently undergoing training at former All England champion P Gopichand's academy at Hyderabad.
Her coach and mentor Gopichand says the 16th ranked player in the world has been playing really well.
"Olympics will be a good experience for her. We would be taking one match at a time," the seasoned player who will also be going to Beijing, said.
"My parents have been very supportive and they want me to train more harder," Saina said. She faces her first encounter on August 9.

You would not only support your own players, like LCW and WMC, but also the underdogs, right? So long as they are not up against the other. ;)
Of course, I will also support our 18-year-old Aiying! :)

.
For a Badminton event at the Olympic Games, it is a great achievement for a 18 year old to be remaining in a group of last 8 players. And Saina eliminated the No.4 seed on the way to that group.
So CONGRATULATIONS to Saina for doing so well. :):):)
Haven't watch Saina's Quarter-Finals match against Maira Kristin YULIANTI yet... but knowing that their first game went on for 28 minutes, finishing at 28-26, won by Saina, I would guess that exhaustion played a big part in Saina's failure to win the next 2 games.
There should be at least another 2 more Olympic Games for Saina to win a medal or more.

Ningtyas 08-13-2008, 11:01 PM Saina's father in tears as he pats his daughter
13 Aug 2008, 2020 hrs IST,PTI
HYDERABAD: Tears of joy welled up in the eyes of an emotional and ailing father of shuttler Saina Nehwal who came very close to becoming the first Indian woman badminton player to reach an Olympic semifinal in the Beijing Games on Wednesday.
Harvir Singh said he was "not too disappointed" with her the performance of his daughter, who lost to Indonesian Maria Kristin Yulianti in the quarter-final, and in fact "I'm proud that she went up to the quarter-finals".
"Saina has done very well for a girl who has no support except that of her family and I wish she continues to do so", mumbled Singh, his voiced choked with emotion.
Admitting that Saina's opponent was "formidable", Singh said he had no regret that her daughter had lost a match which she could have won.

Krisna 08-13-2008, 11:23 PM Unless Saina gets injured/not properly trained, she should be a strong title contender in the 2012 Olympics...
ctjcad 08-26-2008, 04:03 AM ..saw her for the first time playing live as she defeated Wang Chen. At first i thought Wang would probably win the rubber set, as Saina would probably run out of energy, but it wasn't to be. Wang Chen also appeared or seemed to be slimmer than before.
After the match ended, Kevin, Fengwei and myself noticed 3 gentlemen (all wearing turban) waving and trying to call Saina, but to no avail. We thought one of them was Saina's father and wanted to call out his name "Dr. Singh"..:p
Eventhough she lost vs. Maria, Saina should have a pretty bright future ahead of her, esp. with her advantage in age...

then howcome she's in college? search this thread, i learnt it over here and that's how got confused. anyways, saw her speaking on times now the other day. i must say she needs to learn a lot about public speaking or she'll carry on sounding like ex-medium pacer venkatesh prasad. and maybe a bit of touch-up by the makeup man won't be bad although she looks fine.

Figures keep falling after the Olympics and India's Saina Nehwal was promised no less that 2.5 million rupias, which is around 40 000 euros or 57 000 US $. The 18 year old shuttler qualified for the quarter final of the Olympic Games and was promised this amount of money today by her Haiyana government as well as 6 other Indian athletes amongst which Vijender Singh, who got a bronze medal in Boxing.

anshulshirke 09-30-2008, 10:24 AM New Delhi: Badminton player Saina Nehwal is on a roll and is now ranked 12th in the world. This is the highest any Indian woman has ever reached in the world rankings.
Saina returned home on Monday night after an impressive game at the Asian Grand Prix series.
There were high expectations after her quarter final appearance at the Beijing Olympics and Saina lived up to it by winning the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix a few weeks ago.
She crashed out in the first round of the Japanese Open but reached semi-finals of China Open last week.
CNN-IBN spoke to a Saina in Hyderabad and she said that she is very happy after returning.

“I am very happy about it. I never thought that I would reach 12 by September end. I was aiming at top 20 by the end of the year but now as I have reached 12, I am aiming at top 10 by the end of the year. It has been great five, six months for me. I have been playing well and I am beating good top players and I my game is improving. I play my best and I keep on improving my ranking,” says the victorious player.
Saina also talked about her future plans mentioning the name of the tournaments she is preparing for.
“Positive is that day by day I am improving my ranking which will really help me to get good draw in the future tournament and second thing is that I am getting to play good matches. Next year I'll be having good tournament like All England, Junior World Championship, so that will really help me to learn by playing with top players. These are the positive things that I have taken from them and one thing is that beating Julian in China was excellent match result, beating her with her hometown was unbelievable because the way the spectators were supporting her but still I was cool and I thought that I can do it. I was so focused that I had only one thought in my mind that I can win against it and I should beat world champion and I am really happy about it,” she adds.
The badminton player said that she is working hard and won’t repeat the mistakes she did in her recent game.
“Now, I will just working for two weeks and I have Commonwealth and Junior World Championship. For junior world championship I think I am pretty prepared for that but for future coming super series which is in November I have a good 20 days break after Junior Commonwealth Championship so I will see how to improve and how to play with those players, I will recollect at that time and hopefully I shouldn't repeat the same mistake which I did here.”

I saw saina in a tv interview. her parents played badminton alright, but according to that interview, they played till state level, not national level.but yes, i agree, she's got the genes.and i hope she never gets a big head.
Sealman 11-18-2008, 09:41 PM Saina will be world number one in 3 years: Prakash Padukone
BANGALORE: Saina Nehwal is a 'champion material' and in another three years, India can look forward to seeing a world number one in the Hyderabadi youngster, said legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone.
Seventeen-year-old Saina has most of the qualities a champion needs - physical, technical, mental and self-belief - the former All England Champion said.
"If she continues to work hard and remain focused, there is no reason why she can't reach the very top", Padukone, himself a former world number one and a World Cup winner, told here in an interview.
"It (Saina becoming world number one) is definitely possible. She is already at 11 (in world rankings) now. It's just a matter of time before she breaks into the top 10", he said.
"I think within a year, she is definitely capable of being in top five, and go on to even become number one may be in two-three years," he said.
This year has been an extraordinary one for Saina, who reached the quarterfinals in the Beijing Olympics and won the recent World Junior Badminton title.
"If she continues like this, she has got everything going right", Padukone said, terming her performance in the two events as impressive, creditable and commendable.
"One can look forward to some great performances from her in the future," he said.
Saina needs to plan her tournament schedule properly, Padukone said, advising her to be selective about tournaments and space them out in such a way that she gets enough time and rest and can work on her weaknesses in between.
Training for short stints abroad - may be in Malaysia or Indonesia - would be a good idea for her as such outings would help her familiarise more with the type of game that foreigners play.
"They (foreign players) play a different kind of game, compared to the Indians. So, that does not come as a surprise to you when you play them (If you have short training stints abroad)", Padukone said.
On her quarter-final defeat in Beijing Games, he said that was more due to lack of her experience. Saina was mentally very strong and had self-belief, which were the key factors.
"She believes now that she can beat the best in the world," Padukone said, but cautioned that she should also be prepared to face some defeats along the way as the other players would not give her titles on a platter.
"You have to be prepared mentally to face some reversals...may be one or two odd defeats will be there. That should not upset you", he said.

Oldhand 11-21-2008, 05:26 PM From The Telegraph (http://www.telegraphindia.com/1081122/jsp/sports/story_10146685.jsp) of 22 November 2008:
Saina, Bindra fired me up, says Anand
New Delhi: World champion Viswanathan Anand on Friday said the series of successes by various Indian sportspersons had motivated him in defending his title against Vladimir Kramnik of Russia.
“I am really happy to see so much sporting success for India this year. Apart from cricket, I followed Abhinav Bindra and Saina Nehwal’s triumphs. In fact, that gave me a little bit of extra motivation to win again,” Anand said on his return to Chennai.
Anand arrived in Chennai to a tumultuous welcome in the wee hours of Friday and was greeted by a horde of fans and quote-hungry reporters.
This is his first visit home after retaining his title, his return to the country being delayed by illness. He will be taking a couple of months off and will play his next tournament in February.
Anand, who looked tired, was received by his mother Sushila at the airport.
The large crowd that turned up overwhelmed him. “The reception and the enthusiasm of the fans is fantastic. I hope none of you gets killed in the melee,” he said.
The 38-year-old said he was proud of the thumping he gave former world champion Kramnik in the 12-game match — a format that is supposed to be the Russian’s forte.
“A three-point lead is unheard of, especially against a player like Kramnik,” he said, and admitted that his “opening preparations played a big part”.
“Games 3 and 5 were not only important wins but were also beautiful wins,” said Anand, referring to his three-point lead in Bonn last month.
Anand said he was also proud of his consistency and that he managed to peak at the right time because of which he reached the pinnacle of the game.
“I am pretty proud of my consistency. I have been in the top-three (in the world) from 1996... I also managed to peak in the right years which is very important,” he said.
Anand said he had not reached a cul de sac as far as the game was concerned. “I am still learning a lot about chess. I am enthusiastic about it and (still) motivated to play,” he told a news channel.
Asked about his legacy, Anand said, “I am happy and proud that I have contributed in making India a potential powerhouse in chess”.
Anand is the lone Grandmaster to win world titles in three formats — he won the 128-player knockout format in Teheran in 2000, the tournament format in Mexico in 2007 and the traditional match-play format last month.
Oldhand 11-21-2008, 05:27 PM Aside:

Google has the answers, limsy.
And don't google for 'viswanthan anand'.
Try this spelling: 'Viswanathan Anand' ;)
By the way, Anand is the only Chess Grandmaster to have won the World titles in all three formats — the 128-player knockout format, the regular tournament format and the traditional match-play format.
limsy 11-22-2008, 05:28 AM thanks...uncle old hand...hehesorry for off topic

As we know, China's younger guards are now replacing the older ones. And there are lots of them of Saina's standard waiting in the wings. Therefore Saina will not have it that easy unless she continues to show great improvement.
Oldhand 12-13-2008, 06:50 AM It's amazing how callous bureaucrats can be :(
Here's the Times of India (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Potpourri/In_a_sorry_state/articleshow/3832735.cms) on Saina's travel woes.
She's been preparing for the Super Series Finals.
And here's NDTV (http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/showsports.aspx?id=SPOEN20080076331&ch=12/13/2008%203:14:00%20PM) on how they finally resolved it.

It looks like Saina is not only having China's younger guards to do battle with, but also India's callous bureaucrats.
It's good news that things have worked out fine for Saina..
ALL the BEST to Saina at the 2008 Super Series Finals

robin7 12-19-2008, 08:19 AM Saina has advanced for the semi-finals in Masters Finals in KK.
What an impressive performance from a 18-year-old beating Pi Hongyan and Wong Mew Choo en-route to the semi-finals.
Seriously, I can foresee her to be ranked world number one by the year of 21.
limsy 12-19-2008, 11:06 AM congrates to saina too...
gemini12 12-21-2008, 11:51 PM Saina Nehwal is a nice girl. spoken to her many years back. She is a very independant and polite girl.
I have seen her game improved many folds and it is great to see her played. She is young. Only 18 years old but with great potential to challenge the chinese girls in years to come. wish we Malaysian have a young girl like her.
Congratulaton Saina.
Ningtyas 03-19-2009, 09:49 PM here is the link to Saina's new blog.

Oldhand 06-20-2009, 08:27 AM Not since her victory at a depleted Philippines Open a few years ago has Saina Nehwal played as well as she has at the 2009 Indonesia Open.
The gutsy Indian girl has downed China's Lu Lan 25-23, 21-19 in the semifinal.
That pits Saina against China's Wang Lin who trumped her just a week ago at the 2009 Singapore Open.
Perhaps it will be second time lucky for Saina Nehwal :)
suetyan 06-20-2009, 08:37 AM Tomorrow will me a World Junior battle:p World junior champion 07 (Wang Lin) v World junior champion 08 (Saina) :D Too bad Wang Yihan lost to Lu Lan in the QF, if not, it would be another world junior battle in the semi final. Seems like all the juniors are improving and performing very well lately, especially Saina. Hope she can defeat Wang Lin tomorrow and get her first SS title :)

jaydeep 06-20-2009, 12:23 PM Terrific win to reaching her first Super Series final ... But final is difficult as Saina lost against same player in last week's Singapore Super Series quarters and still she is vunerable against top-5 players.
Good luck Saina!

Oldhand 06-21-2009, 03:10 AM Now that she has experienced the pressure of playing and winning a Super Series final, Saina Nehwal will be better prepared for the 2009 World Championships.
She will also hold the advantage of playing in Hyderabad, in front of her home crowd :)
narnia 06-21-2009, 05:32 AM In my view of her plays in the Final against WL, Saina seems to have good talents; she played very smart! Very promising in WS future. :)

No doubt, Saina Nehwal is the star of the 2009 Djarum Indonesian Super Series Tournament. She played brilliantly in the rubber game with both her defensive and attacking moves and Wang Lin just could not wear her down. Luck was also a factor. Now that the ice of winning an SS tournament has been broken, I think SN will go on to win more tournaments with the guidance of her coach Gobichand, the former All-E MS champion. . She will definitely give the Chinese a run for their money.
:D:D:D:D:D:D
