View Full Version : Indonesia Open 2006 QUARTER-FINAL (02/06)

Okay guys...here's the lineups. I will be flying back to SG in the morning, so, hope to meet up with Loh, Ants and other BFers.

MEN'S SINGLES
Chen Yu vs Eric Pang

Taufik Hidayat vs Kenneth Jonassen -- a repeat of the WC quarter-final match. Taufik is a slow starter and he needs to play at his best to beat Kenneth. We have seen the fighting spirit of Kenneth...he just never gives up. A tough tie for both players

Simon Santoso vs Bao Chunlai -- it will be a major upset if Simon can beat Bao. He's definitely improving a lot this year with wins over Park Sung Hwan and now Boonsak Ponsana in his belt. However, I still think Bao is a class above him.

Qiu Yanbo vs Lee Hyun Il

WOMEN'S SINGLES
Chen Li vs Jun Jae Yun

Kanako Yonekura vs Zhu Lin -- I hope the Japanese can win.

Petya Nedelcheva vs Pi Hongyan

Lu Lan vs Xu Huaiwen (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- the young Chinese could win.

MEN'S DOUBLES
Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto vs Tri Kusharyanto/Rony Agustinus -- Luluk/Alvent shouldn't have a problem beating the non-Pelatnas pair.

Zheng Bo/Gong Weijie vs Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya -- a tricky test for the experienced pair, but, I think they will win.

Thomas Laybourn/Lars Paaske vs Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae -- youth will prevail.

Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan vs Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Lin Woon Fui (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- the defending champion has beaten the young Malaysian pair before. They should do it once more.

WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen vs Satoko Suetsuna/Miyuki Maeda

Zhang Dan/Zhao Tingting vs Jo Novita/Greysia Polii (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- so far so good for the Indo pair, but, the Chinese will present a stiff test. I expect them to lose....

Saralee Thoungthongkam/Sathinee Chankrachangwong vs Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati -- the young Pelatnas pair has done well to reach the quarter-final and should present a tough test for the more experienced Thai pair. It could go into 3 sets...

Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen vs Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung -- another candidate for match of the round. Lee/Lee has been rather erratic lately esp when they were beaten by Chien/Cheng in the Uber Cup. I expect the Chinese pair to win.

MIXED DOUBLES
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- the Chinese has beaten the defending champion once. Any match against Chinese pair is always tough....a real test of Nova/Butet's credential. I hope they could win.

Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung vs Songphon Anukritayawon/Kunchala Vorawichitchaikul -- Lee/Lee should progress

He Hanbin/Zhang Dan vs Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam -

Chen Hung Ling/Chou Chia-Chi vs Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen -- the Chinese Taipei pair has surprisingly beaten 2 Indonesian pairs en-route to the quarter-final. However, Xie/Zhang should beat them with ease.

I haven't been following the results. It's nice to see Jun Jae Youn on her way back to top form.

Tony/Candra. Well, what can be said about them that hasn't already been said many times before. :)

BTW, what happened to Sigit/Flandy? I suppose they lost in an earlier round, then? And the same for Candra and his sister?

I must say Chen Yu, Eric Pang and Simon have done very well in the MS to reach this far and to have beaten very experienced and highly ranked players.

In the semis, Chen will very likely beat Eric, Taufik will find Kenneth very difficult to beat despite the home support, but Simon has more than equal chance to dismantle Bao, I think. Simon has all too often been criticized as Indonesia's weak link and now is the chance for him to prove his critics wrong.

Don't know anything about Qui Yanbo. Must be an upcoming young China star, perhaps not quite in the mould of Chen Jin yet. He will learn from Lee Hyun Il. :)

But we will welcome badMania back to Singapore with open arms and look forward to meeting him soon. Maybe he is in the air now! :D

Today's LIVE Broadcast on SCTV :
- TH vs KJ (01.00pm local time)
- Markis/Hendra vs M.Fairuzizuan/Lin WF (01.45pm)
- Simon vs BCL (02.30pm)
I guess SCTV is very busy with its capacity as FIFA WC-06 Official Broadcaster so they don't coverage too much in IO this year. Anyway, I think CHN's squad present very well performance so far with its '2nd class shuttlers'. Big shock for MAS's team especially LCW as top-seed in this tourney must be lost in early round (quite embarrassing for him -- just straight set give in from CHN's unpopular player). Possible scenario for tomorrow's SF match in MS : TH vs Chen Yu and LHI vs BCL (slim chance for Simon to defeat BCL although many INA's fanatic supporters are very support him).

WOW....I have just landed in SG and now see that Taufik wins. Even though I am not his fan, its always good to see Taufik back to his form.

As for Markis/Hendra, they are really destroying the Malaysian pair. Hope they can continue with their momentum.

Today's "big" matches have been close.

I think Taufik will go to the final and face his nemesis...Bao Chunlai.

Yogya quake lies heavy on hearts of shuttlers
ID Nugroho, The Jakarta Post, Surabaya

While men's doubles specialist Sigit Budiarto continues to give his all on the court at the badminton Djarum Indonesian Open 2006, his heart is elsewhere: His family's house was destroyed in last Saturday's earthquake in Yogyakarta.

The quake has claimed the lives of more than 6,200 people and the numbers keep rising.

The 30-year-old shuttler was in Kudus, Central Java, to attend the official opening of his club's new badminton complex when he got a call from his younger sister.

"My sister only said there was a quake and asked me to call her back. I tried to call her, my house, my parents but I couldn't get through. I was very worried about them," said the 1997 world champion with former partner of Candra Wijaya.

His concern only grew when he saw on television the devastation wrought by the quake.

Sigit immediately left for his family's house in Kalasan, Central Java, which is quite close to Prambanan temple. "When I got there, I saw our house was flattened by the tremor. It was shocking. I was speechless."

It was not only his parents' house which was destroyed by the quake. His grandparents and other relatives also lost their homes.

The quake has left about 650,000 people homeless.

"My family is still lucky as none of us were seriously injured in the disaster," he said.

Sigit, who is eying a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, considering withdrawing from the US$250,000 Indonesian Open, where he is playing with new partner Flandy Limpele.

"The tragedy has ruined my concentration. I didn't feel like playing. But I have to be professional. I can't just pull out. I should not be emotional," he said.

Sigit is not the only athlete affected by the tragedy. Shuttlers Tri Kusheryanto and Aprilia Yuswandari are also playing with heavy hearts.

Aprilia -- whose home is in Imogiri, Bantul, the area hardest hit by the quake -- went into a panic the minute she heard the news. Already in Surabaya for the tournament, Aprilia could only wait for news on her mobile phone.

"My family told me that our house was leveled by the quake but they all survived," she said. "I had to turn off my grief and stay focused on my game."

But it was not easy. Aprilia lost to second seeded Huaiwen Xu of Germany on Wednesday.

If I am not wrong, usually if withdraw unless injury, there is a fine.

it should be the logical thing to allow players to withdraw without a fine as it is a natural disaster and is also a global issue.
if players get fined then the organisers/IBF guys should be fired without hesitation

If this is the case then they should be a little flexible. Rather than 'players can only withdraw due to injury', they should say 'withdrawals must be approved by the IBF and/or their badminton associations'.

Nonsense, you talked as though the kancil has no chance of escape and will surely be devoured by the harimau.

This kancil of yours is different. Although relatively small in physical size compared to the harimau, it is very fast and has a lot of ideas and a good strategy to get the harimau into serious trouble without actually coming face to face.

This kancil is on home ground and knows all the nooks and corners of the rough terrain. Whilst being chased closely by the harimau, the kancil sped through the thick undergrowth. When the harimau was just a hair's breadth away, the kancil suddenly jumped up into the air. The harimau was shocked and could not apply his brakes and in an instant found itself screeching into a deep ravine. The kancil sailed majestically over and landed safely on the other side. Now, pray tell me, who is the victor? The kancil or the harimau? Taufikist or BCL? :D

i agree with u hara^kazuko,

and also i want to see non china player to be # 1 player, the last non china player who became # 1 player is only taufik in 2001

Lee CW just ruined his chance 2 days ago. He still has chance next week at Singapore, since Lin Dan will not play there. (correct me if I'm wrong).

From my observation, Chinese don't care about the #1 ranking at all, even though they occupy that position for a looooong time.

Then why LYB didn't send Lin Dan to INA to defend his ranking
Also, Chen Hong, Chen Jin can participate more tournaments to improve their ranking.

Overall, I think all Chinese players, plus Taufik are under-ranked. They don't have a plan for competing on ranking, while Malaysia and Denmark over-ranked, they always keep two eyes on ranking.

LCW won't be making history because Wong Choong Hann, Roslin Hashim and Rashid Sidek had all been the world no.1 player before.

Not really. WCH was the world no.1 in 2002 (even its only for a week :D ) and I think Lee Hyun Il was the last person who held the top ranking position before Lin Dan took over (correct me if im wrong)

i think the reason why china doesnt really care about the top ranking is because they had enough of it... i think now the player himself will only care bout bringing glory to home and family... n china is making sure that they will still be appearing on badminton courts n make the country sounds enuff internationally
