Team Indonesia has chance to win 3 titles.

MEN'S SINGLES
Taufik Hidayat vs Bao Chunlai -- Despite Taufik's poor record against Bao and his rumoured injury, I think Taufik certainly will not waste a good chance to win another Indonesia Open title. Bao will definitely be his greatest threat in the tournament and it will be a thriller.

WOMEN'S SINGLES
Zhu Lin vs Lu Lan -- Yawn...yet another battle betwen two Chinese...this time two youngsters. They have really shown their maturity by beating more experienced opponents such as Pi Hongyan, Xu Huaiwen, and Kanako Yonekura. Should be evenly matched with Lu Lan having a slight edge.

MEN'S DOUBLES
Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan -- I have earlier wrote that Tony/Candra will win the tournament...and by the look of it, they could do it tomorrow.Tony/Candra is a a better pair compared to Candra/Sigit. I will not be surprised if they decide to play in the WC this year. However, for the sake of youth, I hope Markis/Hendra can retain the title. They have impressed this week by beating Malaysia's and Korea's young pairs in Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Lin Woon Fui and Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae. At the moment, they only face some problems beating experienced pairs such as Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah, Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun.

WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen -- again, an expected clash between Chinese current no 2 and no 3 pairs. Yang/Wei to prevail.

MIXED DOUBLES
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen -- Nova/Butet is on a roll...beating Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting and now Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung. It was a surprisingly fast victory yesterday but I would expect another close match against the fastly-improving Xie/Zhong. There's no doubt about it, Xie/Zhang is definitely a gold-medal potential for Beijing 2008. I hope Nova/Butet will win...possibly in 3 sets....with the help of the home crowd.

MEN'S SINGLES

Taufik Hidayat vs Bao Chunlai -- Taufik is not fit 100% yet. Not to mention BCL had good record against Taufik and he already used to Indonesia crowd loud cheering. :D

And this is BCL best chances to win a title after always losing to his teammates in most of the tournaments he participated. (Mostly LD and CH). BCL will win in 3 sets.

WOMEN'S SINGLES
Note here: Zhu Lin and Lu Lan probably thanks LYB by not sending ZN and XXF to this tourney cause it mean they had very big chances to win their first title. And it already proven by both of them reaching final.

Zhu Lin vs Lu Lan --

I had never watch Zhu Lin play. But I watch Lu Lan play yesterday against PHY and she play very good controlling PHY. So just maybe Lu Lan will win.

MEN'S DOUBLES

Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan -- Not that I don't wanted Markis/Hendra to won but the experience factor will be very helpful for Tony/Candra to win this title.

And if Tony/Chandra win, it will be a slap in PBSI face cause their 2 main MD fail and lost to ex Pelatnas players.

WOMEN'S DOUBLES

Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen -- Yang/Zhang will win in 2 sets.

MIXED DOUBLES

Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen --
Their record is 1-1. Nova/Liliyana will win in 3 sets.

Just to add a word.. they also have much to do facing chan chong ming/koo kien keat too... lol

And if Tony/Chandra win, it will be a slap in PBSI face cause their 2 main MD fail and lost to ex Pelatnas players.
Hmm, this is an old issue and actually it was proven somewhat already last yr during the World Championship where Tony and the not-so-known Howard Bach defeated the Pelatnas *experienced* pair in Sigit/Candra...Actually if Tony/Candra win against Markis/Hendra, it won't really be a "slap in PBSI face"...I mean how can that be??..You expect PBSI to keep all their former players for ever and ever (ie. Rexy, Ricky, Halim??)...Didn't those players leave *on their own terms* for whatever reasons they have??..
Sure, if Tony and Candra win today, it won't be a good result for PBSI's current crops of MD, but remember(which i'm sure you know also) both Tony/Candra are experienced, ex-Pelatnas players who have won all the top echelon IBF tournaments and championships there are. Winning against the "inexperienced" Markis/Hendra shouldn't be a surprise. But IMO, losing against those 2 younger pairs will be somewhat of a surprise..
;)

BTW, right now i'm looking at Tony/Candra winning the MD tie, just purely on their sheer talents alone...On that note, i wouldn't be surprise to see the results of this IO *similar* to the 2005 World Championships' results, which were:
MS-INA:Taufik
WS-CHN's gal
WD-CHN's gals
MD-USA/mix pair:Tony and his partner
XD-INA:Nova/Lilyana

how's that for my "boldest prediction"..;):)

Hehe, no doubt...But why just play in the WC..why not continue playing together overseas as a freelance pair as long as their bodies are still able(but poor Halim though, he's going to be left out:p )...Go to all the possible tournaments and start racking up those titles...and $$...hehe:p  :) ..

Ooh...I did forget that BCL has never won a single tournament except for a Denmark Open title some years ago. This has added further pressure for Bao to win today. I recall he was leading 1-0 when he faced Chen Hong in the China Open last year, however, he screwed up badly later on (esp in the third set) and Chen Hong ended up winning unexpectedly. Yes, it's Bao's mental attitude. If he goes to the court with the pressure of having to win, it will be Taufik's advantage. Also remember that Taufik's sole victory is in front of a home crowd in yet another Indonesia Open.

It will not be a shame if Markis/Hendra lost. Again, my heart says that Tony/Candra will win because of their vast experience. However, I do hope that the youngster can prove themselves by playing a smart game. Beating Tony Gunawan at the net is going to be a hard task. I guess they should watch the video of Fu/Cai beating Tony/Howard in the semi-final of China Masters a couple of mths ago. This is exactly what they should do...catch the seniors by surprise and build a healthy early momentum quickly.

I thought Bao won the 2nd game in China Open... Well, today could be the best time to prove that Bao is more mature than before... He beat Taufik in his homeground during Thomas Cup 2004 and he had proven that he is better mentally in Thomas Cup last month, how about today? Taufik said that it will be more difficult to beat Bao than Chen Yu yesterday... Its hard to predict who is going to win today... This will be a really interesting match to watch...

It's a pity that once again, Nova/Butet lost to the upcoming Chinese pair. It's not going to be easy for any senior pair to beat Xie/Zhang now.....
hmm, well, they were very lucky last yr winning vs. XZB/ZYW and winning the WC..i think the scoring system is a bit of a factor as well..IMO, NW/LN's game is a bit defensive, esp. NW, can't believe he wasn't able to consistently control the shuttle so LN can play her game-couple or so bad shot selections by him also...i think they have reached their max *as a pair*, time to partner up LN with another partner...

I had the new year edition of pplive and it was awesome. In recent weeks tho I haven't been able to select channels from that version so I got the new one. Markis/Hendra still have problems playing against senior pairs like Tony/Candra, Eriksen/Hansen, Chong/Lee as I have mentioned earlier. When attacks failed as we have seen today, they don't have any other weapons to get pts. Playing against Tony patroling the net is another big problem.

However, they are very very young at 22 years old only. Time will mould them into a pair that could be as good as Tony/Candra.

I am wondering, how about tony/candra/sigit 10 years ago? Was their technique level the same as Kidho/Setiawan? My impression is that the former should be better.

So what happened to Indo MD? From tony/candra/sigit to Alven/luluk to K/S, seems the level of technique is going downhill...

to answer your 1st question, yes, they were that good even 10 yrs ago...that's why the domination by INA MD from mid 90s to 2000/2001..
but time changes and they all grow older..

I won't say level is going down, but it's just not the same, for whatever reason.....possibly the newer MD pairs lack quality sparring partners(ie. during Tony/Candra's time, they have Ricky, Rexy, Trikus, Halim, Flandy, Eng Hian to name a few to spar and train with, world elite players, unlike now)..could be also just simply, the lack of new talents..not only in MD but MS, WS, WD and XD..guess PBSI will just wait and see what their new players have to show..

My only regret was the dubious linecall. I congratulate TH, but I don't want him to win because there were dodgy linecalls in his favour. But this is sports I suppose, sometimes you just accept the decision and move on. Congratulations, TH! Who says he will not do well in the new scoring system?

Taufik wins in 2 close sets 21-18, 21-19. There was one controversial call when the score was 19-19 in the second set. I thought it was an out ball to Taufik and a game pt to Bao Chunlai, however, the decision was made against Bao and it was match pt to Taufik. At that pt, it was game over to Bao.

One note I want to make is that Taufik was full of confidence throughout the entire match and looked determined to win. That was the first time I watch such a performance from Taufik since last year's World Championships Final against Lin Dan. He deserves his win. Once again, I reiterate....if Taufik wants to win...he will win. He does not show that kind of mood in the Thomas Cup. Let's see which side of him shows up in the Singapore Open next week. I personally don't think he will win next week.

Anyway, congrats to Taufik for his 6th Indonesia Open title. Too bad the other Pelatnas pairs such as Nova/Butet and Markis/Hendra could not win today. They will face tougher opponents in the Singapore Open, esp Markis/Hendra. They could go out as early as in the second round as they are once again paired against the Malaysian veteran pair of Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah. Nova/Butet will also face another match-up with Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen in the quarter-final. Expect another close match!

true but gota admit I lost count how many times Taufik did a tumbling netshot..
and the commentator keep saying its luck, its really annoying
and keep saying the linejudge is bias and all, look @ china open and everything they never say anything

Both players were exceptional today but I think overall Taufik played better (by a small margin) with his powerful smashes and superb net drops.

-------------------

Bao really tried his best though, especially at the end giving all that he got. He should have been a bit more agressive because I noticed that he didn't smash very often.

My only regret was the dubious linecall. I congratulate TH, but I don't want him to win because there were dodgy linecalls in his favour. But this is sports I suppose, sometimes you just accept the decision and move on. Congratulations, TH! Who says he will not do well in the new scoring system?
it happens, in almost all sport, even if one tries to avoid it...in that instance, i would like to see a side camera shot from the baseline, cos the camera angle used didn't give a good angle thus it wasn't that clear...for me it looked like it made the 1st bounced barely on the line, it was very2 close and too fast..for sure it's too darn close..

The fact that Agum Gumelar (father-in-law and KONI head), Sutiyoso (PBSI head), Djarum bosses, his wife, and all the crazy Indonesian fans are in the stadium is one motivation for Taufik to win today. I can't imagine what will happen if he lost....

As a reminder, this is Taufik's first Grand Prix since the HK Open last fall (when he lost to WCH).

From the Singapore Open draw, if things go according to plan, Taufik should meet Bao yet again in the quarter-final. This time, I think Bao will win.

I indeed think TH is not worthy with this championship. BCL is more worthy. The referee had an unfair behaviour with BCL. This maybe happen to all player's host country.

well, other than that 1 close call, how do you know the result will differ??...it was a close call and a fairly fought match...try putting yourself in that linesperson who made the call...
it always comes down to blaming the linesmen and putting excuse on home cooking etc., which i've highlighted the comment i put in bold..sigh..:p

No more stupid line calls against Bao in singapore (i hope so). This is the 2nd time he got a line call against him. The first one is when he played against Simon in QF. I'm afraid there won't be Chinese player in Indonesia Open. Just like what they do every Korea Open. 3 line calls against Chinese players when facing Indonesians. It is really dissapointing for a 6* tournaments. One of the linesman even changed his decision (during Taufik vs Chen Yu). It was really dissapointing, no wonder Bao looked like that after the final match. Anyway, two thumbs up for Taufik, he played well today.

Bao could return most of taufik's powerful smashes, which most player couldn't
yes, i can see that he has a good feel of Taufik's smashes..add to that his lanky physique, which really helps him a lot to cover the court..which leads to your comment below for Taufik's counter-answer..
And taufik's nettings were almost perfect...
IMO, that was *the difference* today..It's gotta be "perfect" and his ability to do it consistently and effectively...For example, in many instances, esp. in the 1st set, when Taufik was trailing, he used that shot quite a few times in a row to bring himself back in the match after trailing...and it was Taufik's netplay which threw off BCL's rhythm a bit in the latter half of the 1st set and in the 2nd half...
You complement that tight-net shot technique with his smashes and that's a deadly combo, because both shots complement each other..

The tournament official looked unproffesionally, I little disagree IO 2006 held in this place.
Some years ago, The stadium was dark when Taufik & Chen Hong played in Final.
Bad line calls, cancelling of umpire decision also court moving (Lu Lan match in Quarter Final) was happened in this year.

I also prefer the tournament to be held in Jakarta, but Indonesia Open has been held in many location, Batam, Medan, Surabaya, Semarang, Yogyakarta Pontianak and other cities.
they held it in Bali a few yrs. ago, but heard it didn't attract too many spectators...I believe this yr's IO is the 2nd one held in Surabaya..
I saw some tournament in Jakarta, complaining because of human error wasn't tend to give advantage to host players. Many INA players also got bad call and made complaining in here.
Human errors will always be there, no matter what sporting events and where...And in these instances, *linesmen, referees and umpires often times become the scapegoat*..if a certain player(s) play at his/her own home soil and gets a bad call, he/she will complain etc.; but if another outside player say comes to Indonesia to play and receive bad calls, then they all say, "it's 1-sided" or "it's home cooking, and must be some special treatment to home player" etc2 and so on and so on...:p

well, "having standard to hold international tournament", maybe not, but i won't call it "bad stadium". I mean according to PBSI's and Surabaya's badminton organization's standard, CLS Hall is probably the "best and biggest available" sport hall in the city of Surabaya, which also hold games for the Surabaya's pro basketball team. So basically that's what they can provide. Heard also, eventhough they had air condition in the CLS hall, it wasn't strong enough, as the players were also soaking like crazy..
But i heard next yr's(2007) IO will be held in the city of Solo(near the area of the new Djarum Sport Hall in Kudus)...

i thought Bao played very well also, he controlled most of the 1st set, until Taufik started to "force" and keep BCL honest by doing the tight-net shots to set-up his smashes..A rubber set would be wonderful, no doubt, as the people who came to watch will really get their money's worth..hehe;) :)

The umpire is fine, but the linesmen sux ... how come they changed their decision... Should be in Jakarta. The new Djarum Hall is really huge. But i prefer in Jakarta, so I could watch every single match in istora...
Doing it in a different place/city will not diminish or eliminate the chances of "bad line calls, cancelling of umpire decision and court moving"..
Regarding the change of city, i heard from a source from Indo that the reason they moved the IO to Surabaya from Jakarta this yr was because there was somekind of demonstrations going on in and around Jakarta. Another reason i heard was that they were doing some renovation work in the Senayan complex..?!?!..
I think the atmosphere is also different, as the crowd and supporters in Senayan were a bit more raucous and loud. This yr's tournament, seemed like the crowd was a bit more "subdued" and "organized"...
As for a new place to hold IO, heard they will hold next yr's tournament in Solo. Possibly in the new Djarum Sport Hall in Kudus..?!?!..

And how do you pronounce Djarum? (D-jar-room or Ja-room?
Djarum is a large conglomerate group in Indonesia, with businesses in cigarettes production and distribution. It also sponsors one of the most famous badminton club in Indonesia (apart from Tangkas and Jaya Raya).
that's right...To add, Djarum has 2 clubs, one in Jakarta which develops Men Doubles or doubles players. While their main club headquarter is in Kudus, Central Java, where they just opened a new sport hall...see for their latest news..http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33491
as far as the pronounciation of it goes, the latter is the sound..

i thought Bao played very well also, he controlled most of the 1st set, until Taufik started to "force" and keep BCL honest by doing the tight-net shots to set-up his smashes..A rubber set would be wonderful, no doubt, as the people who came to watch will really get their money's worth..hehe;) :)
Beside, BCL is not the only CHN player who fell "victim" to Taufik's tight net shots, ask LinDan and probably Chen Hong also...hehe:p  ;)

Yeah, the tight net plays killed BCL for sure. Every time BCL lobbed it back it either went into the net or got smashed by Taufik (Taufik seemed to use this to score at the most critical time).

Taufik was also good in varying the speed of his returns (pushing the shuttlecock to the back of the court fast, and catching his opponents on the wrong footing --- even though they went long a few times).

When watching Taufik play, one gets this feeling he had control and will win even though he was behind BCL a couple of times. He seemed to be able to snap a few winners when he was down --- a sign of a person who knows he can control the game if he wants to. LCW from Malaysia needs to learn from Taufik --- Taufik is a real Champion !

well, it didn't "killed" BCL, hehe, but it sure threw off his rhythm quite a bit...throughout the match, BCL seemed to be the one who is "reacting" instead of the "initiator"..
Taufik was also good in varying the speed of his returns (pushing the shuttlecock to the back of the court fast, and catching his opponents on the wrong footing --- even though they went long a few times).
well, Taufik was able to do that because of 2 things:
1. Strong wrist..For example, a few times, i noticed he was caught in a wrong position by BCL, and had to go back and execute a very difficult shot(either by backhand or forehand) and still got it to go over the net..
2. He was the one controlling the tempo/action, which you mentioned below..Eventhough there are times which BCL also caught Taufik wrong-guessing and on a wrong footing..

Absolutely..And he was motivated, for whatever reason.. ;) i mean you can tell the difference between his body language and BCL's-from the beginning during warm ups til the end..And a person who knows that *he is in control*. That's what i saw last yr(live) when Taufik played in the Singapore Open and World Championship..I think with him slowly getting used to and adjusting to the new scoring system, i think he will be hard to beat... ;)

Hopefully, they'll devote the lavish new training center for the development of the women's team...don't we all miss the days of Susi Susanti & Mia  It's been a while since Indonesia competed in the elite women's events (esp singles)

I don't think its fu, its chen qiqiu or zhang jun, i forget that one... But the other one is cai yun, it was shocking... I wouldn't believe it if i didn't watch it... They are like 'emergency' pair, and candra/sigit was the # 1 pair... Unbelievable...
Cai partnered with Zhang Wei

Just heard of that since over here no badminton channel available (pitty). It was quite shocking. Perhaps somebody can give me the video of that Sudirman2003 (MS and MD = INA vs CHN). Thanks.
