Indonesia's Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat arrived in Singapore on Monday night for the Aviva Open Singapore tournament.
But, less than 24 hours later, the defending champion was on a plane back to Indonesia, to seek treatment for a back injury suffered before last month's Thomas Cup.

Indonesia national coach Paulus Firman said that his player, who won the Indonesia Open last week, was very upset.

Said Firman: 'After his Indonesia Open victory, he complained about his back injury.

'I asked him to come to Singapore and see how he felt. But, after one night, he felt that his back was too painful, and he could not play.'
This is not the first time that Taufik has teased Singapore Open fans.
In 2004, he appeared for a pre-tournament press conference and declared his enthusiasm for playing in the event, before heading home five hours later complaining of a foot blister.

Denmark's world No5 Kenneth Jonassen said that Taufik's withdrawal was not a surprise, if he was playing with an injury last week.
He said: 'There's no point for him to play here if he's just going to get a bad result.'

His compatriot, Peter Gade, said that the withdrawal would not affect the competitiveness of the tournament.

He said: 'He is not the only big player in this competition.'
Singapore's Ronald Susilo, who is making his comeback to top-flight singles competition after a lengthy injury lay-off, echoed Gade's sentiment.
'That's one tough opponent less, but there are still many others left,' he said, pointing out China's Bao Chunlai and Chen Hong as the ones to watch.

Spoken with Taufik. Its true that he will not be able to play. What a pity. He was kinda excited to come here to Spore. But at the same time mixed feelings due to his back problem. Anyway show must go on.

What's the big deal here? Having kids is a nature right of man and woman. This is Taufik's private affair. Now, let's discuss badminton. Kids is nature. But leaving kids is a big problem. He probably has bad ethics but good at badminton skill. But to me, the best player is completely not like him.

I think taufik 's father in law is powerful in Indonesia. If that news is not true, how can she be alive.
Nowadays, everything can be checked by ADN. It seems to be nothing for her to blame Taufik.

I do not think that Indonesian girls have free time and enough confidence to do that.
I think that girl have some evidence to prove that rumour. Otherwise, he can not be forced to come back quickly like that.

i think 2 important steps before dna test is :D

- a picture, is there any picture taufik with her (proving that she has a special relationship with TH)
- a witness (her friend or parents), that can confirm about relationship between her and taufik

He should not do it at all. If he takes the test, he is admiting that he had a relationship with the woman and there is such a possibility that the child could be his. If there's no chance the child could be his, he should not even bother.

SPECULATION was rife in Indonesia and Singapore about the real reason behind Taufik Hidayat's withdrawal from the Aviva Open Singapore on Tuesday.
The Olympic and world champion had arrived in Singapore on Monday night.
The next morning, he was on a plane bound for home after complaining of a back injury he had suffered prior to last month's Thomas Cup.
However, Indonesian lifestyle tabloid Nova reported on Tuesday that a 26-year-old woman had come forward with her five-year-old son whom, she claims, was fathered by Taufik, the recent Indonesia Open champion.
The woman was not identified but observers speculated that the shuttler had returned to Indonesia to quell the allegation.
He married Armi Dianti Gumelar, daughter of Indonesia National Olympic Committee head Agum Gumelar, in February.
The wedding was a star-studded event, which saw Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla acting as witnesses during the solemnisation.
Agum reportedly told Indonesian media on Tuesday that he did not believe the report.
'I don't want to comment on the report because its accuracy is under question,' he was quoted as saying by the Rakyat Merdeka tabloid.
Taufik could not be contacted yesterday.
Indonesia national coach Paulus Firman said that he had not heard anything about the rumours.
'But many people are jealous of him and may be making up stories,' he said.

You'll find Agum speak many things about Taufik and his injury, the issue about Taufik's child etc.

Agum also spoke about Taufik's recurring back injury. It's worse than I first thought. He said that after semifinal IO match against Chen Yu, Taufik felt the terrible pain again, and his body temperature rose and Taufik must take a bath in early 01.00 am because he couldn't stand the heat. According to Agum, physically Taufik was unfit to play the final match against Bao, but Taufik's spirit was so strength despite the pain. And he won, and Agum was so proud of him.
Agum said that Taufik said he did not care even if he must die in the field for the glory of the country. (Taufik tidak peduli walau pun harus terkapar mati di lapangan demi membela nama bangsa, or something like that). Hmm.

And it's after the final match vs Bao that Taufik and Ami met Agum to explain the issue to him.
Lucky Taufik, Agum is really proud of him and always support him. Taufik withdrew from SO is due to his injury, not because of the rumour.

Actually the tabloid is owned by Bimantara group, just like RCTI. And the tablid's ad on TV shows Ami read it. :-) So, the tabloid was lucky to be able to interview Agum exclusively.

Why Taufik went to Singapore? I guess this was PBSI's decision. I read somewhere else, that Taufik has told them about the pain, but PBSI's official told him to just go and see if his condition improved there. But that's not the case, Taufik's pain was just worsening so he just went back home.

Here's what has been said about Taufik's injury (maybe you can translate it):
"Taufik memang tengah mengalami masalah pada punggungnya, apa ya, bukan syaraf kejepit tapi ada yang kena pada syarafnya. Ini biasa dialami oleh para olahragawan. Dan kondisi yang terjadi pada Taufik itu sudah parah banget. Kalau lagi kambuh kadang untuk jongkok atau sikat gigi saja terasa sakitnya bukan main. Ini yang tidak diketahui masyarakat."

"Belum reda sakit yang dialaminya, Taufik dihantam isu yang hampir merontokkan moralnya. Dalam waktu yang bersamaan, atau sehari menjelang Taufik bertanding di final (Sabtu 3/6), seorang wanita bernama Anny membeberkan kepada media bahwa dirinya telah memiliki seorang anak hasil hubungannya dengan Taufik Hidayat enam tahun yang lalu. Pengakuan menggegerkan ini tentu saja sangat mengganggu persiapan Taufik menjelang final. Hari Sabtu itu juga Taufik yang tengah berjuang dengan sakitnya, mendapat kabar mengenai pengakuan wanita itu dari Ami istrinya yang sempat dihubungi oleh wartawan.

Am I the only one who thinks Taufik behaved really unprofessionally by begging off the Singapore Open through injury and showing up at the World Cup? :rolleyes: I mean a 9 hour flight from INA to GER isn't exactly what the doctor ordered for a back injury. As a professional badminton player, he should behave like one. He's not really setting a very good example for all those kids who idolize him. You know what they say, kids like to emulate their idols. Looks like Taufik is dropping big hiints about leaving the game; he prefers to be a celebrity these days.

madbad, even PBSI could not do anything because Taufik is the KONI chief son in law. And Agum has asked Indonesians to understand that Taufik is not so fit (lagi sakit).

Maybe Taufik will not leave badminton so soon.
But because of his injury --or-any-other-reason-- I think he become very selective in chosing which tournament he would play.
When Agum asked by the tabloid reporter about Taufik's future in badminton, Agum said that Taufik is just 25 years old, and he hope Taufik will win some important events such as the Beijing Olympic, Thomas Cup, and Sudirman Cup. And Agum also said that if Taufik can win the All England title, then Taufik's achievement as a badminton player will be just excellent and perfect (karirnya sudah sangat cantik dan sempurna).

And I hope Agum add Doha Asian Games as another target for Taufik. :-)
For me personally, if Taufik for-whatever-reason can only play in 3-4 tournament, I would like he chooses the very important ones. It's alright if he cannot not win so many open tournaments, it's alright if his ranking drop, as long as he win in big tournaments, especially for the country (such as Olympic and Asian Games).

Its true that kids try to emulate their idols. However the parents are the one who is most responsible for the kids development and NOT sports people or idols.

imagine a parent saying " my kids are spoilt because of Taufik "
how ridilculous that will be???

I suppose the concept of a professional sportsman is different in each country, or at least how a professional is supposed to behave. While parents can guide their child, if the child is enamoured with a certain sports celebrity you will see him/her emulating the idol. Why, because the kid sees it as glamorous, cool, hip. It is very evident in soccer where kids copy their favourite player's moves and skills. It then evolves into some body language mannerisms or disintegrates into behaviour such as berating the referee. Believe me, I have been very disappointed with how some kids with great potential have turned out, and that's to some degree due the the influence of their idol.

In North America at least, responsible sports stars acknowledge the need to be a good role model for kids, both on and off the the playing field/court. That's also a measure of the type of person they are.

Believe you me, Taufik is one of my favourite players but recently, his off court life is making more headlines than his professional life. I quite honestly do not care much of his personal life but as a badminton fan, it is affecting his play. And he doesn't appear to take this setback seriously. Also, like it or not (I am not apportioning blame), his behaviour will have a trickle down effect to some of his younger, adoring fans. It is very evident on BC he has almost cult-like groupies that can see him do no wrong. I hope Taufik realises that badminton gave him his fame and fortune and treats the sport and his fans with respect.

that picture of them in Germany and having a good time is pretty convincing, that the issue was just a big rumor after all...Either that, or they were very good in "putting up a good front" for the media...:p ;) :rolleyes:
Side note and off topic:i'm just wondering, in the pic, why is Agum there with both of them?? I know he probably was invited, but why still mingling with his daughter and son-in-law??..Hmm, sorry, just expressing what i've known abt Indonesian or Asian culture: I hope i'm wrong on this, but i guess for the time being, Taufik will have to "follow" his father-in-law's wishes/command. If he decides not to, then probably he will be on his own and not be "treated" as the son-in-law of a "respected" individual...Sigh, this is just me, but poor Taufik, he's got all the "material" and "status" all to him, but he loses his "freedom of will"..:rolleyes:

He loves watching soccer as much as you like watching Badminton:D .
