The Singapore Indoor Stadium once again opens its doors for the Aviva Open Singapore 2006. Monday and today are admission free for the qualifying events.

Tomorrow are the preliminary rounds for the main draw, starting early morning at nine with the XD and possibly ending at around 9.30 pm with the MD. And what a start it will be with no. 1 seed, Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms of England crossing swords with their Japanese counterparts, Keita Masuda and Tomomi Matsuda. The dynamo Emms will not give the Japanese duo any quarters and it will be her control at the net that will once again prove decisive!

The WS will have a rest day and will commence on Thursday. The time taken to complete all the events will be decidedly shorter, thanks to the new 21-point rally scoring system. Badminton fans watching at the stadium will not have to endure past mid-night and miss the public transport to take them home.

I managed to capture a little of the atmosphere at the SIS this morning. As the main events will be held tomorrow they are still doing up the decor and fine-tuning other matters. A great deal of construction work are in progress in the vicinity as this Kallang venue will be turned into a new sports hub in about 2 to 3 year's with the new Circle Line very much in an advanced stage. But the sky is cloudy and a little rain is expected. Hopefully it will be bright sunshine tomorrow as lots more fans are expected to turn up to support the event and thier heroes.

As for the qualifying matches, I've chosen to focus on two of our young China girls brought into Singapore when they were about 12 to 13 years old. They are probably around 16 now. While Zhang Beiwen lost narrowly to Yoshimi Hataya of Japan in three hard-fought games, 14-21, 21-13, 18-21 in 53 minutes, Gu Juan brought some hope when she defeated the much taller, Lydia Cheah of Malaysia, in a 41-min three gamer, 21-11, 18-21, 21-16 to secure a place in the main draw. Hopefully with more exposure, our girls will learn to climb the ranking ladder faster! :D

Hi ctjcad,

Yes! there is a construction doing tunnels for underground expressway and trainway right in front of the bldg. But the place is not residential area and therefore traffic around the building is somewhat not heavy (and most of time, no traffic at all:D ).

hi kyiyu,
how is it going, long time haven't talk. i believe last time i tried contacting you was last yr, when i went to S'pore. However, i'm not there this yr..:p
Anyways, thanks for the additional infos. Yah, if that's the case and they're adding new tunnels for the MRTs, then that's a great news(sorry, i'm not that familiar with the area, but are they building the tunnels underwater?or above it?cos i remember there is a river/body of water separating the main downtown and the SIS area and we have to go on a bridge).
Anyways, now people can have access from downtown(Orchard Rd. area) to the SIS/Kallang(eventhough i remember there's one close by, but it's still far from the SIS) area using the MRTs. I remember last yr, i had to take a taxi to/from downtown area all the way to SIS..:p
Maybe next time i visit S'pore i'll be able to ride that instead to watch the SO..;):)

Yes, the new Circle Line (underground train) is supposed to bring more people and add more life to this sports centre in about 3 years' time.

Kallang will be transformed beautifully and will be another favourite place for physical-fitness and sports-minded people, especially the young, to converge and do their thing. The current national stadium (which you can see in the pic) will be pulled down and replaced by a more hi-tec one with about the same seating capacity (55,000) but an indoor stadium will be added to complement the outstanding SIS, which of course will be retained. There will be other sports facilities to this new Kallang Sports Hub, but the design details are not made public yet I think. This hub will be contracted out for private management.

I might also add that this sports facility will coincide with the completion of the International Resort (IR) at Marina Bay, a casino and integrated tourist facilities with first-class hotels, museums, entertainment, meetings, incentives tours facilities, etc. The much heralded IR , costing about US$6 billion to build, was recently won by Las Vegas Sands, which was also successful in Macau.

Not only this, our Botanic Gardens, will also come all the way to the IR to turn this downtown, first-class commercial area near to Raffles Place, into an extensive tropical garden.

Come to Singapore in three years' time and many interesting places will await you and tickle your senses!

The new Kallang Sports Hub will be the future sports arena to host regional and international sports such as sthe SEA Games, the Commonwealth Games and perhaps the Asian Games, if Singapore is given the honour to host them! :)

Hi ctjcad,
Yeah! You did. I felt bad that I missed your call as I was on line with other. And when I returned the call, the hotel reception picked up and could not trace anyone. Therefore, I could not get you back.

Thinking of redeeming you for a missed call with a lunch treat :D, if you come this year open. So bad that you miss this year.

Loh, appreciate again for sharing your never-ending information. Wow, what an ambitious plan by the local and national govt. of S'pore. Looks like they are investing quite a lot in enhancing the image and charm of S'pore. I just hope with all the changes, they don't lose or forget their traditional side. Yes, i heard and read abt the IR and a plan to open up a Casino/Multi-complex area in S'pore and to be built/owned and operated by the Las Vegas Sands group(as a matter of fact, Las Vegas area is also undergoing and/or planning to undergo an extensive no. of expansion). BTW, mind telling us how are they going to build the underground tunnels for MRTs??underwater or above it??..

Anyways, i'll probably visit S'pore sometimes soon again, cos 3 yrs. is probably a long time wait, hehe..;) Hopefully next year, for the 2007 SO so i can join you guys..;)

Last evening, five of us went to Lau Pa Sat, a 10-minute drive from the SIS, to take a quick bite as we need to return to watch the exciting MS Round 3, featuring some of the best players like Peter Gade (v Chen Yu), Chen Hong (v Bjoern Joppien). Bao Chunlai (v Eric Pang), Chetan Anand (v Saman Ismail), Hafiz (v Simon Santoso), Kenneth Jonasen (v Shoji Sato) and our own Ronald Susilo (v Nguyen Tien Minh).

The longest match of 1 hr 11 min, was between Ronald and Tien Minh, both of whom employed long rallies to try to tire the other. In the end Ronald emerged victor and TM almost had cramps with a score of 21-19, 15.21 and 21-9.

The more interesting match was fought out by Peter Gade and Chen Yu in attacking mode and it was a close finish right to the end, with Peter almost losing but recovered in the last few points to win 21-11, 23-25 and 22-20 in 1 hr 6 min.

Bao Chulai had an initial scare when he lost 19-21 in the first game to Eric Pang, but he piled up the pressure to win convincingly in the two remaining matches, 21-14, 21-9. Having watched Eric Pang in the past, I must say he has improved a great deal in this tournament.

The more interesting matches will come this afternoon where the QF winners will be decided.

Seated at the round table at LPS are from left EastDevil, kyiyu, ants, badMania an yours truly:

I would suggest you to take Cathay Pacific from HK to LA (like I always do whenever I go back to Indo) so that you can play some games with us (Dan, Chris, everyone else) here at SGVBC. And you could take the Burbank Airport to go to SLC. How long will you be in the US?

Hmm, badMania, i don't know what is your exact schedule for your upcoming trip to the U.S., but if i were you, i will consider Gunawan's suggestion also. Here are your options:
1. IF you plan to go thru L.A, and your trip to SLC happens to be just during weekdays, then maybe you can catch an early flight back to L.A. on the Friday and spend the rest of the weekend here or if you want, spend 1 more week here in L.A. whilst going sightseeing before heading back to H.K. Perhaps the U.S. Open will be going on at the same time??.. And you can meet another BC member harimau, our resident OCBC fellow and meet Tony and Halim also..hehe:p
2. Another option is, if you want to arrive thru S.F., then i suggest you spend 2 weeks here in the U.S. So after the SLC trip, you can swing by L.A. and spend the weekend or so here with the SoCal BCers(for sightseeing also if you desire) and then fly back to S.F. to meet/spend some time with Kwun(and other BCers) and finish off the trip there (go sightseeing the rest of the week) before heading back to H.K.

In any case, we'll be ready for your arrival here..;)Just let us know, ok??..:)

Hmm, "10 days" meaning 10 working days or 10 total days(including weekend as well)??.. ..If it's 10 total days, including weekend, then might as well spend 2 weeks here in the U.S....Too awkward, IMO, if you decide to go *at most* 10 total days...:p  And we'll let you know the schedule of the U.S. Open also, if it's going to be played in Oct., so you can plan ahead..:)
BTW, just a quickie info, flight time from L.A. to/from S.F. is about 1 hr. Flight time from L.A. to/from SLC is about +/-2 hrs. or so and there's a 1 hr time difference also.

on the 2nd day they said that 70-200 is also not allowed. dunno whats with this ridiculous policy. Their website only says no flash photography, then suddenly want to say lenses like 70-200 cannot use.

I had the same ridiculous encounter! A more camera-literate usher came to me to 'inspect' my camera and was satisfied that it is not a 'professional' one although I had the 70-200 zoom lens (Nikon version). I told him it is not possible to take reasonable pictures from such a far distance with the ordinary wide-angle lens. Therefore the zoom lens is necessary. He agreed and was assured that I'm just an amateur with amateur equipment. But the days followed that I was told again and again that my camera is not allowed because it is 'professional' (optical illusion?) and I have to explain again and again that it is not and that my camera had been 'passed' for use from day one!

I think next time, Kwun should make sure we get our 'pass' so that we can get right onto the courts and take very close-up pics! :D Maybe I should pass my camera to ants who has free access to the court area. He even 'coached' Saman in his game against Bao Chunlai! :D

Actually, we were all in a hurry and very hungry for the exciting matches that should follow after dinner. In fact, when we returned to the SIS, the matches had already started but thankfully, we didn't miss much!

More pictures of the finals matches were posted in the following threads:

It must be a blessing in disguise for Flandy Limpele and Sigit Budiarto to part ways with their old parters, Eng Hian and Candra Wijaya respectively. For this 'new' veteran pair has swept aside all opposition to become the MD Champions of Aviva Open Singapore 2006!

Some may say it is most unexpected, probably lucky for them to win, but whatever the case, they did and most convincingly. Thier victims were another unexpected Danish scratch duo of Lars Passke and Thomas Laybourn who managed only 8 and 16 points from their bruised and quick encounter in just 35 min. The exciting XD Final between eventual winners, compatriots Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir and their English counterparts, Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms, in contrast, took almost twice as long!

Of the two, Sigit was decidedly the more adventurous but steadier partner. Maybe he had nothing to lose with no old baggage to weigh him down, so he enjoyed this laxity and threw all caution to the wind! Flandy had just to keep pace with him to elicit a thoroughly devastating victory. The Danish pair simply could not find an answer to their spontaneous, though unchoreographed moves. Bewilderment was all written on the Danish faces! Even the great Morten Frost sat still in front of all the Indonesian spectacle!

Strangely enough, another scratch pair from Singapore, Hendry Kurniawan Saputra and his younger brother, Hendra Wijaya, had caused a lot of rippled excitement and confusion to their opponents when they appeared from nowhere to defeat the likes of Malaysia's Lee Wan Wah/Choong Tan Fook (21-12, 21-12 in 26 min), Indonesia's Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido (21-16, 21-16 in 40 min) before losing to Laybourn/Passke in the QF in three games 21-13, 12-21, 21-23 in exactly one hour!

So this Singapore Open has somewhat given supporters something to remember by despite the absence of some top players.

I also didn't have a chance to meet your Filipino friends like Glen or Patrick(?). Just managed to say a quick hello to Terry (KL) and another Thai BFer on my way out to join EastDevil and badMania for dinner at the Lau Pa Sat after the semi-finals.

It was a rather rushed and absorbing outing for most. Fortunately we were rewarded with some very fine showing by the players! And the atmosphere at the SIS was as relaxing and as comfortable as before. The spectators behaved well although some might think they are too noisy with their balloon clappers. There were no unruly incidents and many seemed to enjoy themselves.

I can't say much about the food provided by Cheers though. Limited variety, insufficient food on certain days, food too dry for my liking as there was no such thing as gravy or soup. Only one microwave oven to serve the entire SIS community. And there were insufficent tables and chairs as well although food can be brought to the seats, which I think is a good change. However the coffee tasted good but not the price at $1.20 versus 80 cents at the coffee shops - a 50% increase!

Hi,
Of course I remember! LOL...

Well Raphael used to be a professional player I think (?). I was told that in Jakarta last year he was Pi's sparring partner :-). Maybe even until now.

Yes pics are coming.....

Our website has been up and down. We've suffered so many attacks from our Malaysian friends. I don't know why they attack our website as it's not even government/political sites. We get attacked mostly when the two countries have disputes. It's a shame but well...

We managed to get it up soon or at least we will try to get the news section up and the rest can wait. members area isn't working anymore after recent attacks.

I used to write a lot in English so that you guys can know what's going on in Indonesia but I don't have that much time anymore :-).

So, i guess podcast is the easier way to do it these days. I'll try doing it weekly at least.

hey come to Singapore again!!!

The Aviva Open Singapore has become an event for all badminton and sports lovers - the young and old, family with kids in tow, the trendy and not so trendy, the active and inactive - they all love to meet at this diamond-shaped, Japanese inspired, comfortable and air-conditioned location. The number attending this year is not bad although I do not have the official figures.

Hordes of school children could be seen in their uniforms as this event was held during their month-long school holidays! They added colour and vibrancy to the tournament as they applauded with their balloon clappers and cheered in unison. During the finals, the pair of hand-drum players hammered a familiar Malay rhythm interspersing between rallies which the spectators appreciated and joined in with their clappers given free by the organisers. That provided an instantaneous background music to the proceedings.

It was a fun-filled event and the younger participants were cajoled into responding loudly with their vocals to the wishes of the emcee engaged during the finals to add more noise, excitement and entertainment for all.

Debutant brothers, Indonesian born Hendry Kurniawan Saputra and Hendra Wijaya now wearing Singapore colours, created a mini-storm in the MD.

Being unknowns, they had to endure the two qualification rounds, beating the Singaporean pairs of Alvin Fu/Koh Yan Sen 21-9, 21-12 in 25 min and Pu Yunbiao/Daniel Yudi Kurniawan 21-3, 21-9 in 14 min - the quickest time of the entire tournament.

They entered the main draw as a result, but more were to come. Few would have given them a chance to beat Indonesia's young second doubles pair of Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido in R1, but they did in identical straight games of 21-16 in 40 mins. Fewer would think that they could take a game off Malaysia's world-ranked veteran pair of Lee Wan Wah/Tan Choong Fok but they shocked us with an emphatic victory of 21-12 for both games in merely 26 mins.

Only the tough Danish pair of Thomas Laybourn/Lars Paaske were able to stop their smooth passage in a hard-fought match of three games 13-21, 21-12, 23-21 in an hour! And the Danes could have lost had the younger Hendra not got over-excited and crash the shuttle into the net when it should have been an easy kill. They would have carried the Singapore fight into the SF and made Singapore badminton history with attractive rewards awaiting!

And to think that these same two brothers were once told to leave the national team because they failed in the long distance run test. They returned after a year in much better shape and Hendry in particular, was chosen to partner China-born Li Yujia in the XD. This XD partnership had also caused a stir when they beat much higher ranked pairs. At their peak, I think they reached WR10.

I'm sure we'll hear more from the brothers. :)

AVIVA OPEN SINGAPORE 2006

TIME TAKEN FOR MATCHES
(21-Point Rally Scoring System)

Time: Below 20 min /20-29miin/30-39 min /40-49 min

MS 1 29 24 15
MD 4 13 12 7
WS 2 9 15 6
WD 3 8 9 4
XD 4 18 12 3

Total 14 77 72 35

50-59 min/1 hr & above/Walkover-Retired/Total Matches

MS 6 5 4 85
MD 3 2 3 44
WS 8 3 0 42
WD 3 0 0 27
XD 0 1 2 40

Total 20 11 9 238 (229 Played)

Interestingly a total of 11 matches took over an hour to complete out of 229 matches played (9 walkovers and retired games) with the MS leading with 5 matches, followed by WS 3, MD 2, and XD 1.

Of the MS matches the longest of 1 hr 11 min was fought between Ronald Susilo (SIN) and Nguyen Tien Minh (VIE). Tien Minh almost suffered from cramps as he had played a R2 match against Tan Chun Seang (MAS) lasting 27 min in the morning. However, Ronald also had to endure a longer R2 match of 34 min against Juergen Koch (AUT). Ronald was knocked out by Peter Gade in the QF in 45 min. But it is to Ronald's credit that he could last this long after recovering recently from an Achillies tendon injury. His most crucial test came during R1 when he met and beat Kuan Beng Hong in three games, 21-16, 18-21, 21-16 in 50 min.

Peter Gade had to be on court the longest as he had to defeat Indonesia Open runner-up, Chen Yu (CHN) in R3 in 1 hr 5 min and again in the SF against Bao Chulai in 1 hr 3 min.

Similarly in the WS, Yoshimi Hataya (JAP) had to play two matches lasting longer than an hour. They were in R1 against Weny Rahmawati (FRA) in 1 hr 3 min and in Q2 against Aditi Mutatkar (IND) in 1 hr 10 min. She also played an energy sapping match against Zhang Beiwen (SIN) in another qualification round before winning 21-14, 13-21, 21-18 in 53 min. Finally she was stopped by compatriot Kaori Mori in R2 with a score of 19-21 13-21 in 43 min. But this Japanese girl showed a lot of promise and we should be seeing more of her especially now that her older teammates are considering to retire.

The ignominious distinction of remaining on court for the shortest time went to the inexperienced young Singapore scratch pair of Pu Yunbiao/Daniel Yudi Kurniawan in Q2 in just 14 min. They were surrepititiously ushered out by teammates Hendry Saputra and Hendra Wijaya who became the pair most talked about in this tournament for their gusty display. This hitherto unheard-of scratch pair of brothers Hendry and Hendra defeated two highly world ranked pairs of Lee Wan Wah/Choong Tan Fook (MAS) WR6 and Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido (INA) WR13 before they were halted by the eventual MD runner-up Danes, Thomas Laybourn and Lars Paaske during the QF in three keenly-contested games.

The bulk of the matches centred around the 20-29 min (77) and 30-39 min (72) range or 34% and 31% respectively of the total number of matches played (229). In total these two groups formed 65% or the bulk of the matches. If this is the pattern, we should expect most future NSS matches to last an average of not more than 40 min.

If we were to calculate the total number of minutes taken to play 229 matches (taking only the mid-point of the above time range categories), the answer is an average of 35.2 min for every match played (8060 min divided by 229 matches).

But we do have two extremes - the long and the short, 1 hr 11 min versus 14 min for a match as detailed above. :D

Here are some pics of the MS QF.

Bao Chulai (CHN) completely harnessed Saman Ismail (MAS) who had no answers and surrendered meekly 21-11 in both games in 24 min.

Anup Sridhar (IND) did slightly better against Kenneth Jonassen (DEN) in two identical games of 21-15 in 35 min.

Ronald Susilo did well in the first game 19-21 to contain Peter Gade but also fell badly in the second 16-21 in 45 min. There were longer rallies but Ronald did not capitalize on his opportunities to attack more. Instead Peter Gade took every opportunity to initiate attacking moves and finish off with powerful smashes.

Chen Hong found his touch after losing the first game to finish off Hafiz Hashim 13-21, 21-13, 21-15. With his defeat, no Malaysian were able to advance to the semi-finals as all five quarter-finalists were all eliminated. Certainly a sad day for Malaysia as it was for Singapore when Hendry and Hendra also lost in the MD.

Eight ladies came through to challenge the WS quarter finals. Not unexpectedly, the most number, three, came from China, followed by two from Japan and one each from the Netherlands, Bulgaria and France.

China sent her second-stringers, three very young but tall, talented and strong-looking girls, Lu Lan, Zhu Lin and Chen Li, but in the end only Lu Lan, runner-up to Zhu Lin in the recent Indonesia Open, proceeded to the SF by beating Kaori Mori in a close match 22-20, 21-18 in 44 min. Japan was represented by their 'veterans', Kanako Yonekura and Kaori Mori, the younger Japanese girls like Yu Hirayama, Yoshimi Hataya, Eriko Hirose (beaten by Zhu Lin 21-12, 21-14 in R1) having been knocked out in the earlier rounds. I must say that newcomer Yoshimi has impressed many, not only by her good looks but also her sheer grit and determination to remain on court for as long as possible.

Surprisingly, the three contenders from Europe were in good form compared to their displays in the Indonesia Open and won their matches in straight games as the following results show. Bulgaria scored a first when the oversized Petya Nedeltcheva became the first Bulgarian to reach the SF in Asia. Petya will put Mia to shame with her huge assets. But I'm sure EastDevil will be just too happy to see his 'darlings' here. :D

1) Mia Audina Tjiptawan beat Chen Li 21-17, 21-12 (31m);
2) Lu Lan beat Kaori Mori 22-210, 21-18 (44m);
3) Petya Nedeltcheva beat Kanako Yonekura 21-14, 21-19 (42m) and
4) Pi Hongyan beat Zhu Lin 21-18, 21-9 (38m)

The two rivals have met 11 times since October 2002 but this time proves to be as exciting and as competitive with the outcome slightly different. This WS match certainly proved to be much more exciting than the MS encounter between compatriots, Peter Gade and Kenneth Jonassen.

Pi Hongyan won only 4 times against Mia Audina who prevailed 7 times although she is WR5 just ahead of Mia's WR6. In this SO, Pi is seeded second behind Mia.

Mia, as the favourite, moved away quickly in the first game and seemed to have it wrapped up easily when Pi made a fight back towards the end and forced a deuce at 20-20 before winning it 22-20.

The second game started off no differently but again Pi showed her true colours and fighting spirit to edge Mia out in the end with a similar score, the entire match lasting a good 45 min.

So the underdog has won with her steely nerves and uncompromising determination!

Just a correction on my writeup on "Analysis of Time Taken for Matches".

I mentioned that Chen Yu was the runner-up in the Indonesia Open, this is incorrect as he was only a semifinalist having lost to Taufik Hidayat 17-21, 16-21 in the Top Section.

The Bottom Section saw Bao Chunlai beating compatriot Qiu Yanbo, who received a walkover from Lee Hyun Ill (KOR), 21-14, 21-13. In the final, TH overcomed BCL 21-18, 21-19 but in the process, he aggravated his back injury and was unable to play in the Singapore Open although he did turn up but returned to Jakarta soon after.

Taufik's absence gave the Danish players a monopoly in the SO MS final, which turned out to be a relatively dull affair. Both the Danes' semifinal encounters were much more exciting when Peter Gade was stretched over three games against Bao Chunlai, 21-15, 16-21, 21-17 and Kenneth Jonassen was also involved in a 3-game struggle with two-time winner, Chen Hong before winning 25-23, 19-21, 21-16. Both matches took just over an hour. Compare this time with the MS final between the two Danish teammates of merely 35 min in the SO, it was a great disappointment! :(

Kenneth has resigned to the fact that if cannot beat PG in the first game, the second should almost be a quick 'let-it-go' thing - hence only 35 mins.

This is the same with LCW and WCH in the Commonwealth Games --- WCH knows if he cannot do any good in the 1st, he let it go quickly in the 2nd rather than fighting hard against LCW and getting injured.

I really can't be sure about what is actually in their minds. They are top individual professionals and to be second means getting paid for only about half of what the winner gets. If they are willing to forego this much after having gone this far into the final, I'm not am not very impressed! Albeit they are teammates from the same country.

In events where prize money is the main criterion, say the Commonwealth Games, but where the team spirit is important, maybe such concessions as you've mentioned can prevail. Or it could also be a case where the coach decided that your compatriot needs the points to be placed in a higher world ranking for whatever reason, then this could also take place.

However, good friends may also make personal sacrifices and concessions!:D

Well if MP studies in our local schools, then she will have to study Chinese (Mandarin) as well, unless she chooses the Malay language which is not too different from Indonesian.

Of course it will be different if she enters our Polytechnics or our Universities.

Sorry, what i meant was "In events where prize money is NOT the main criterion".

Many times my typing just doesn't synchronize with my thoughts! I'm only human! :D

sorry we didn't meet. I was looking out for Loh but not sure where he was

We were all trying to look out for storkbill but at the same time we knew he could not be at the SIS for all the matches. Unfortunately we did not know his timetable (probably available most times during lunch hour?) and therefore it was difficult to meet.

As I recalled during last year's SO, storkbill was sitting many rows in front of me and I then took the opportunity of taking a snap of him from the back. Here's how he looks like in case you want to locate him next year! :D

Here are some pics I took of Li Yujia at last year's SO and this year's ABC in Johor Baru. You be the better judge of whether Li is a creditable representative of badminton in general and whether she is better looking than some of the tennis gals who have been given so much exposure over TV.

Hope Moonsilk likes some of the pics with her "Thai family" in them.

I do agree that most of the gals from China have fair skin. Not nessesary those who are playing badminton.
