Another long day is in store for tomorrow esp for men's and women's singles. Both events will see out 2 rounds by the end of tomorrow night.

MEN'S SINGLES (starting from 10:20am)
Peter Gade vs Roman Spitko

Ronald Susilo vs Juergen Koch -- can this be the start of a revival from the local favorite? If he's in top form, he should win.

Bao Chunlai vs Kendrick Lee Yen Hui -- a bad draw for Kendrick and Bao shouldn't have a problem advancing.

Lee Cheol Ho vs Simon Santoso -- I have more and more confidence in Simon now. He should progress after disposing the 15th seeded Kasper Oedum today. His next opponent could yet again be Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

Erwin Djohan vs Andrew Smith -- a winnable tie for the local player. Can Singapore have 2 players in the last 16?

Mohd Roslin Hashim vs Kenneth Jonassen -- a tricky tie for Kenneth, but, he should advance.

Round 3 will be played starting from 7:40pm. It will be a long night...

WOMEN'S SINGLES (starting from 1:00pm)
Chen Li vs Hirayama Yu

Cheng Shaoh-Chieh vs Lu Lan (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- I would like to see Cheng beating the Chinese player.

Chien Yu-Chin vs Saina Nehwal -- another interesting match and I would also like to see young Saina progressing.

Gu Juan vs Petya Nedelcheva -- the Singaporean player has done well to qualify and she meets the 7th seeded Bulgarian. Again, I hope she wins.

Kanako Yonekura vs Hwang Hye Youn

Julia Wong Pei Xian vs Yao Jie -- Yao has not impressed since her recovery from injury. Julia might sneak a suprise win.

Huang Chia-Tsin vs Xing Aiying -- a tie that the Singaporean can win.

Eriko Hirose vs Zhu Lin -- the newly crowned Indonesia Open champion should win.

MEN'S DOUBLES (starting from 5:00pm)
Chan Choong Ming/Koo Kien Keat vs Rian Sukmawan/Eng Hian -- the Indonesian pair has suprisingly beat the Korean pair in 3 sets (with 22-20 in the last 2 sets). However, the erratic Malaysian pair should beat them.

Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong vs Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo -- a real test of the young Malaysian pair's credential as an upcoming pair. Can they beat the more experienced Chinese pair?

Jonas Rasmussen/Peter Steffensen vs Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- a tough test for Luluk/Alvent. However, they should have an edge.

Hendry Saputra Kurniawan/Hendra Wijaya vs Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah -- the Singaporean pair managed an upset in the last round. Can they repeat the feat tomorrow?

WOMEN'S DOUBLES (starting from 3:40pm)
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Tomomi Matsuda/Aki Akao -- the Chinese Taipei pair struggled to beat the local pair of Jiang/Li today. They should have an easier task tomorrow afternoon.

Hwang Yu Mi/Kim Min Jung vs Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- a tricky tie for the Malaysian pair, but, they should manage it.

Zhang Dan/Zhao Tingting vs Miyuki Maeda/Satoko Suetsuna -- when it comes to play a Chinese pair, seeding does not matter! Zhang/Zhao to prevail.

Fu Mingtian/Yao Lei vs Gail Emms/Donna Kellogg -- the Singaporean pair won their first match today and faces the second seed tomorrow. It's unlikely they will win again.

MIXED DOUBLES (starting from 9:00am)
Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms vs Lars Paaske/Helle Nielsen -- a tricky tie for the top seed, but, they should win.

Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager vs He Hanbin/Zhang Dan -- again, a tricky tie for the Danes, but, one that they should win.

Robert Blair/Natalie Munt vs Tri Kusharyanto/Minarti Timur (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- the Indonesian veteran has yet again exceeded my expectation by beating the younger Singaporean pair. Can they reach another quarter-final tomorrow?

Jonas Rasmussen/Britta Andersen vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir -- tricky, but still manageable for Nova/Butet. The only pairs that can trouble them in SO are Xie/Zhang and Robertson/Emms.

Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii vs Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen -- it will be a huge upset if Rizal/Greysia can beat the second seed.

badMania, thx for the updates...Hmm, a bit surprise to see only 2 pairs of CHN's WD in there(i assume the Fu/Yao pair is from CHN as well)..Sorry, are these just some of the WD draw or all of it??..
BTW, where are you doing the updates/internet access??..Are you writing this from SIS media center??or in an internet cafe or from the hotel room??..

Those are just some of the WD draw. Fu/Yao pair is singapore pair. There are still three chinese pairs in the draw: Zhang/Zhao, Wei/Zhang, and Yang/Zhang.

The first results of the day: Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting beat their French opponent easily 21-14, 21-9. They will meet Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms tomorrow. Robertson/Emms themselves beat Lars Paaske/Helle Nielsen 21-18, 21-15 in the second set.

The other on-going matches: the local favorite Li Li takes the first set in her match against Diana Dimova 21-10. Tri Kusharyanto/Minarti Timur are trailing Robert Blair/Natalie Munt 16-21 after having an early lead. Surprisingly, He Hanbin/Zhang Dan leads Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager 21-15.

Li Li has won her match 21-10, 21-14 and is through to Round 1/16 to be player later today.

Meanwhile, He Hanbin/Zhang Dan shocks the 3/4th seed Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager 21-15, 22-20. They will meet Robert Blair/Natalie Munt, who themselves beat the veteran pair of Tri Kusharyanto/Minarti Timur 21-16, 21-17.

Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir are also through to the quarter-final after beating Jonas Rasmussen/Britta Andersen 21-12, 21-15. They will meet Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg next, after the English pair beats the local pairing of Hendra Wijaya/Frances Liu Fan 21-9, 21-16.

Saina Nehwal clinches the first set in her match against Chien Yu-Chin 21-18! A good start for her. However, she now trails 11-13 in the second set.

Tsai Chia-Hsin/Cheng Wen-Hsing also create another upset after their 21-19, 21-15 win over Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl. A bad day for the Danes in the XD event. All their seeded pairs are now eliminated.

Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen take the first set 21-15, but Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii manage to force them to a rubber after the promising Indonesian pair takes the second set 21-12. It will be an interesting rubber and I hope the Indonesian pair can win it!

badMania
06-07-2006, 09:37 PM
Saina Nehwal wins her first match after taking yet another close second set 21-19. She now faces the winner between Gu Juan and Petya Nedeltcheva.

Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii also win after their Chinese opponent retired in the rubber set. Possibly an injury to either Xie or Zhang? This could affect the men's and women's doubles matches later on.

So, the lineup for the XD quarter-final is as follows:
Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms vs Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting (MATCH OF THE ROUND)
Robert Blair/Natalie Munt vs He Hanbin/Zhang Dan.
Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir
Tsai Chia-Hsin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii

Ronald Susilo beats Juergen Koch as expected 21-10, 21-14.
Nguyen Tien-Minh also continues to impress after beating Tan Chun Seang 23-21, 21-10. He faces Ronald next. The local favorite has the chance to advance to the quarter-final.

Peter Gade and Chen Yu also progress as expected in 2 straight sets. They will clash later in the afternoon.

The local girl Gu Juan nearly won the first set, but she eventually lost in straight sets to the 7th seed Petya Nedeltcheva 21-23, 7-21. The Bulgarian will play Saina Nehwal next.

A good effort by Kendrick. However, Bao Chunlai is still too strong for him and he lost gallantly 12-21, 21-19, 10-21. Bao will play Eric Pang, who won against a Malaysian player 21-14, 21-16.

Chetan Anand also wins his match quite easily 21-14, 21-9.

badMania
06-07-2006, 11:08 PM
After a tight first set (22-20), Simon Santoso pulls away from Lee Cheol Ho early in the second set and eventually wins comfortably 21-9. He will meet Mohd Hafiz Hashim in the match of the round tonight, after the Malaysian also wins 21-15, 21-14. Meanwhile, Saman Ismail wins the rubber set 21-12 in his match against Peerasak Wirayapadungpong after 2 tight sets 19-21, 22-20. He will play Chetan Anand later today.

Bjorn Joppien and Chen Hong also win the first set. Barring any spectacular collapse, they should meet in Round 3 tonight.

PARTIAL MEN'S SINGLES ROUND 3:
Peter Gade vs Chen Yu -- a tricky tie for the Danes, but, he should win.

Ronald Susilo vs Nguyen Tien Minh -- not a bad campaign for the local favorite. He should advance to the quarter-final with the help of the home crowd.

Bao Chunlai vs Eric Pang

Saman Ismail vs Chetan Anand

Simon Santoso vs Mohd Hafiz Hashim (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- tough tie once again for both players. Simon won an earlier encounter in the ABC this year. With a notable win over Boonsak Ponsana and near victory over Bao Chunlai last week, Simon has clearly shown that he has improved. I hope he can win again tonight! It's a good sign seeing him beating 2 players he lost to earlier this year (Kasper Oedum and Boonsak Ponsana) in the past week. I think he's quite suited to play the 21-pts system.

Bjorn Joppien vs Chen Hong

Simon's world ranking is abt 30-35 (last week's) and should improve to somewhere in the top 30. He should qualify.

yes, i knew abt Mulyo being the coach of Simon, that's why i inquired badMania if he saw Mulyo on the sideline(if he was watching tv, of course:) ). I believe Simon has been coached by Mulyo, ever since last yr. I actually spoke, while giving him a ride, with coach Mulyo last yr during the WC and he confirmed the same thing as you mentioned above, ie. Simon's technique. The other coaches(coach Joko and Richard) also concurred the same thing about Simon.
About Simon winning this yr's SO, hmm, let's not jump too far, we shall see first. Cos, I guess the only thing that they all say was lacking in Simon's game is the mental area, similar thing with Sony-for some reason he's not as "clever" as Taufik... ;)

My last update of the afternoon before I go to the SIS.

The top seed in WS, Mia Audina is untroubled in her first round match against Charmaine Reid, winning 21-11, 21-13. She will face Meemek Monthila who beat Chen Jiayuan 21-19, 21-10 later in the late noon.

PARTIAL WS ROUND 2 Matchup:
Mia Audina vs Meemek Monthila -- no problem for Mia.

Saina Nehwal vs Petya Nedeltcheva -- despite facing a seeded player, I think young Saina still has a chance. I will be rooting for her victory today!

I think Sony also lacks the stamina to last 3 games. I often observe that he lost in 3 rubber games because he does not have the energy to last the distance. As for Simon, he has surprised me this year in beating Hafiz, Boonsak, and nearly beating Bao last week.

Hmm, as far as i know, i thought Sony was the "diligent"/rajin(Indonesian-hehe;)) one in comparison to Taufik. Until he got injured late in 2004(with that foot surgery) and missed most of the 1st half last yr before the WC. Which then, his lack of stamina has been plagueing him since..But definitely the coaches said he just lack "mental cleverness" during games unlike that of Taufik...

Just happened this morning. I sat right in front of the cout that Simon playing by conincidence. I saw the whole first game was not excellent. His smahes were so flat and not steep enough. Net shot are so high and having big gap.

His first game not really impressed me and therefore moveed out to the court that Chen Hong playing.

So quite hard for me to convince myslef that he has better techque than Taufik (Note: I am not die-hard fan of Taufik).

It is understandable if people find it hard to believe in Simon's great technique.
I have watched Simon plays his best and his worst, so I can tell that the difference is indeed very huge.
It seems Simon hasn't played his best in SO. :-)

I hope Simon's case won't be like that of Marleve Mainaky.
Coaches said that Marleve's techniques/skills were great, he had all the weapons, but that great technique was not enough to bring him to the top because of the weakness in the mental area.

I hope Simon will do better in the future. He is definitely more mature than he was 2 years ago. Just give him some time and more experience.

With Xie Zhongbo's possible withdrawal in the MD, the Malaysian pair of Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong could go to the quarter-final without breaking a sweat.

is this confirm already?

is yes, their opponent in QF will be either Luluk/Alven or Jonas Rasmussen/Peter Steffensen.

I hope they can perform their best.

Ronald Susilo vs Juergen Koch -- can this be the start of a revival from the local favorite? If he's in top form, he should win.
Ronald played very well and the result was not really in doubt. Juergen Koch has powerful strokes but was not fast enough to trouble Ronald. But Ronald looked tired. He also broke the strings on 2 x AT700s. I wonder how many spare racquets he was carrying...

Bao Chunlai vs Kendrick Lee Yen Hui -- a bad draw for Kendrick and Bao shouldn't have a problem advancing.
Kendrick had a great second set. He won the 2nd set by playing winners rather than Bao making mistakes which is great. But many unforced errors in 3rd set, guess Kendrick was tiring.

Erwin Djohan vs Andrew Smith -- a winnable tie for the local player. Can Singapore have 2 players in the last 16?
Andrew Smith completely outclassed Erwin Djohan in every area. It was really no contest. Interestingly, Smith used an AT800OFF instead of the usual AT700.

Cheng Shaoh-Chieh vs Lu Lan (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- I would like to see Cheng beating the Chinese player.
Lu Lan won but it was close. I would say evenly matched. I noticed that Cheng does not play round the head shots but would always play with her backhand. When she plays her backhand, her head is not facing forward and I don't think she had any idea where Lu Lan was moving to. Very often her backhand shot was not convincing enough (considering the calibre of her opponent) and punished by Lu Lan. Also many unforced errors on her backhand - shuttle into the net. When she plays forehand and backhand shots she seems to be a different player :)

Gu Juan vs Petya Nedelcheva -- the Singaporean player has done well to qualify and she meets the 7th seeded Bulgarian. Again, I hope she wins.
Gu Juan went down in 3 sets. However, I felt that it was Petya that had the initiative throughout and was the one who was pressuring Gu Juan. Unlike Kendrick-BCL where Kendrick really put up a good fight.

Anup Shirdar v Lu Yi - impressive win for Anup as he displayed formidable offensive and defensive skills (Lu Yi has a good jumping smash and every time Anup returned his smash i would go 'wow'). From their performance, both seem to be 'underranked' as far as their world ranking goes.

:) Simon Santoso did well today, losing narrowly to Hafiz

badMania
06-08-2006, 10:19 AM
Well..well...just back from the SIS. A good day of badminton indeed..with a number of upsets. It was great to meet up with Loh, EastDevil, Ants, and Kyiyu. Loh will surely post some of his photos sometime tomorrow.

A mixed day for Team Indonesia. Luluk/Alvent lost narrowly to Jonas Rasmussen/Peter Steffensen. It was tight all the way from the start till 18-18 and 19-18 in the first and second set respectively. From then, the Danes seemed to have better concentration and went for the kill. The danes won 21-18, 23-21. Too bad

Next, Simon Santoso also lost narrowly 23-25 in the first set to Mohd Hafiz Hashim. He was at game pt, but could not kill the game. In the second game, Hafiz had a 14-7 lead, but Simon managed to catch up till 14-14. Then, Hafiz upped the tempo and went for the kill. He wrapped up the second set 21-15. Simon has improved, but, he definitely needs to be more initiative. More playing hours against these higher ranked opponents will surely help him.

As for the women's doubles, Jo Novita/Greysia Polii had a hard time in the first set, with the Bulgarian pair keep pegging them and they even had a game pt at 20-19. It was at this pt that Jo/Greysia decided to kill of their challenge. The second set was a walkover and the Indonesian pair won convincingly 21-9.

Flandy Limpele/Sigit Budiarto also had a hard time beating the Chinese Taipei pair. It was more like a practice match to them, with flashes of brilliance only when they needed to do so. The first set went to deuce and it finished 27-25. It was better for the Indonesian pair in the second set, but they only managed to win 21-18. Not a convincing performance and they will need to be better to beat CCM/KKK tomorrow afternoon.

The locals had a good day. Ronald Susilo and Hendry Saputra Kurniawan/Hendra Wijaya are through to the quarter-final. Hendry/Hendra surprised the crowds yet again as they did the unexpected by beating the second seeded Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah pretty convincingly in 2 straight sets 21-12, 21-12. The home crowds were ecstatic and that match certainly created the best atmosphere for today.

Ronald also won in 3 sets: 21-19, 15-21, 21-9, but, it was a laboured performance from him. It was also the longest match of the day at 71 mins. At times, it resembled a practice match with long rallies. Eventually, the Vietnamese had to surrender the third set because of a cramp? Ronald will face Peter Gade next.

Finally, I also watched young Saina Nehwal facing the 7th seeded Bulgarian Petya Nedeltcheva. She's still very raw and need to work on her strokes. Despite that, a good effort for her in the second set.

From my eyes, here are my quick sum up.
Even though the big guns are not here, the games are quite interesting.

Hafiz did well against simon, easy.
Ronald had a great workout from the Vietnamese. Marathon game. Wonder if Ronald can recover. Hopefully.
Gade almost beaten. Phew....
Johanssen is easy and cool.
Ismail did well against india.
Chen Hong strolling through.
Bao CL made to sweat a bit.
Friday shd be a good game.

Yao Jie looked lethargic...even when it's only the first set  Julia was all over her and she indeed deserved the win.

She also nearly beat Kanako Yonekura. I only watched the ending of that match. It was 20-20 and it was her mistakes which eventually led to Kanako's victory. :) Simon Santoso did well today, losing narrowly to Hafiz

Simon ran out of gan in the second set. Well of course he was dissapointed with his performance. He did his best. In fact we ( Me and Hafiz ) was commenting on his game at the changing room. Simon is kinda slow in the
2nd set. Then Viola.. there comes Simon..

Ants: What happened Simon?
Simon : Don't know...
Ants: You should have won the 1st set..( i was actually trying to show that i support Simon in fact was also trying to console him a little. )
Simon : Angin la .. translated WIND La.
Hafiz: *grin*
Ants : Nevermind.. next time u hantam Hafiz. ( Next time you give Hafiz a beating )
Simon : Yeah .. ok

We laugh after that.. anyway it was all good.
