06-08-2006, 11:18 AM
The matches will start from 3:00pm.
MEN'S SINGLES
Peter Gade vs Ronald Susilo -- both players struggled to beat their opponents today, esp Peter. He was pushed all the way to deuce in the rubber set. The home crowd will be cheering for their local favorite, Ronald. Can he topple the top seed?
Bao Chunlai vs Saman Ismail -- should be an easy workout for the Chinese.
Mohd Hafiz Hashim vs Chen Hong (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- should be an interesting match to watch. Both players have impressed so far. The Chinese has an edge.
Anup Sridhar vs Kenneth Jonassen -- a tricky tie for the Danes, but, he was impressive in his victory against Shoji Sato tonight.
WOMEN'S SINGLES
Mia Audina vs Chen Li -- experience vs youth. I hope Mia can win.
Kaori Mori vs Lu Lan -- an interesting tie, with the young Chinese player holding an edge.
Petya Nedeltcheva vs Kanako Yonekura -- shouldn't be a problem for the Jap girl.
Zhu Lin vs Pi Hongyan (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- again, youth vs experience. This time, I think youth will prevail.
MEN'S DOUBLES
Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen vs Anthony Clark/Robert Blair -- the World no 1 should be too strong, although the English pair has shown improvements over the past year.
Chan Choong Ming/Koo Kien Keat vs Flandy Limpele/Sigit Budiarto (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- both pairs are erratic and have not impressed so far. It could be a thriller if both plays to their best level. The Malaysian pair has an edge.
Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong vs Jonas Rasmussen/Peter Steffensen -- can youth prevail?
Lars Paaske/Thomas Laybourn vs Hendry Saputra Kurniawan/Hendra Wijaya -- it will be a miracle if the local pair can create yet another upset. The Danes should be too strong for them.
WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen vs Jo Novita/Greysia Polii -- the Indonesian pair has fulfilled their expectation by reaching the quarter-final. It will be a bonus if they can get a set out of the world champion.
Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Britta Andersen/Mette Schjoldager -- shouldn't be a problem for the Chinese Taipei pair.
Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen vs Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- no question, the Chinese to win.
Zhang Dan/Zhao Tingting vs Gail Emms/Donna Kellogg -- again, similar to the above.
MIXED DOUBLES
Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms vs Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- the first match for tomorrow and what a thriller it's gonna be. The English pair holds an edge.
He Hanbin/Zhang Dan vs Robert Blair/Natalie Munt -- the young Chinese pair can create yet another shock by beating the more experienced English pair tomorrow.
Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir -- the road to the title is made easier since Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen is out of the equation now. The World Champion should not have a problem reaching the final.
Tsai Chia-Hsin/Cheng Wen-Hsing vs Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii -- the young Indonesian pair is performing pretty well. They crawl all the way from the qualifying round and could win again tomorrow to meet their senior in the semi-final. A bright future beckons for Rizal/Greysia.

as usual, thanks for the preview again badMania...
hmm, looking at the QF round, here are my 2 cents for the upcoming QF, SF and Finals rounds:) :
For the MS, it looks like it's gonna be an all CHN-affair in the Final...
Same with the WS, eventhough all the QF matches look quite appetizing, probably the most interesting event with 2 up-and-comers and 2 veterans, could be a repeat of the IO Final(Lu Lan vs. Zhu Lin); with probably Lu Lan being the winner this time(you know, taking turns, sharing the wealth around;)..although both Kanako and Mia could give CHN's players a run for their money, esp. Kanako who has been on a hot streak recently..
As for MD, hmm, looks like it's gonna be an all DEN-affair in the Final..
WD, hmm, what else is new...but this time i have a feeling YW/ZJW will *lose again* to WYL/ZYW, to give them a back-to-back victory after the IO(just to prop up their world ranking)..Probably ZJW is on this tour leg just to kill time whilst spending some time with CTF...and continuing also next week @ the MO..hehe;) :)
And probably the 2nd most interesting event is the XD...As i'm looking at 3 ENG pairs in the mix..
Anyways, enjoy the QF and the rest of the final rounds..:)..and your BC get-together event, it's coming is it??..;)

thanks for the review badMania.
Just got something to mention here,
I think Anthony Clark/Robert Blair will struggle to beat the danes. They played badly in CG at Melbourne against MAS pair in SF. Blair is so negative.........I hope he can perform better this time.
Tough match for Ismail Saman, hope he can produce something special.
For Hafiz, he is still a bit inconsistent, I hope he can perform his best tomorrow.

I just cant wait for Hafiz to redeem himself from his lost to KJ at the recent Thomas cup.No matter how much brickbats he has received,I still believe he is an avesome player.A player not to be taken lightly. So watch out Chen Hong.I feel he has the skill to go all the way to take this year SO.Dream BIG,man.Go for it,Hafiz.

Chen Hong is a dangerous player --- at his peak, he was unbeatable. But unfortunately, the Chen Hong today is not the same person. Like Tsuen Seng and Roslin......good but not good enough against younger players.

06-09-2006, 02:06 AM
Possible casts in SF's matches :
-MS:Duel between Danish and Chinese shuttlers --> PG vs BCL and CH vs KJ.
-WS:As usual CHN will secure 2 places in last four.
-MD: Three Dane's pairs, why not?
-WD: CHN again (3 pairs in SF)! Poor Jo/Greysia to meet the Top Seed.
-XD: Fat chance for two INA's pairs to reach in big-4 round.Hope it realize!
Anyway,I guess all sport-events will affected by Fussball-Fest'06 during this 1 month including badminton. How about SIN-Open?Still not impact?

I find those comments lack perspective for two reasons: Firstly, you are talking about perhaps the most consistent MD pairs since Kim/Ha. The TC aside, there is nothing in their track record that says they should quit. They consistently beat younger pairs. Secondly, "let the younger one play" is an invalid argument -- Denmark simply hasn't got that much to choose from.
Martin's injury is terrible news. I hope it's not too serious and that he recovers quickly.

The day started with drizzles in Singapore (and a black rainstorm back in Hong Kong). I left my home after I had my brunch at around 11:30am and went to Orchard to settle some banking stuffs and do some shopping. Bought a jeans that was discounted from S$189 to only S$40  Grabbed it without hesitation...hehehe :p
The indoor stadium was not that packed when I arrived there at around 2:55pm. The announcer just made the announcement for the first and second match of the day: the mixed doubles. I settled into my seat right at the back of Court 3 (the centre court). The matches started at 3:00pm.
The first match was Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms vs Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting. It was pretty tight from the start and the pairs were separated by at most 2 points. However, the Chinese pair made some crucial mistakes at the ending stage and they yielded the set to the England pair. The England pair had control of the second set until they began to make mistakes and let the Chinese caught up. However, they proved to be the more dominant pair and won in 2 close sets 21-19, 21-19.
Then, the Indonesian pairs began to arrive in Court 2 and 4 as their matches started at 3:20pm. I switched my attention to watching the World Champions, Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir. They were dominant from the very beginning and wrapped up the first set quite comfortably at 21-15. The second set was much closer but they were never troubled. It ended 21-18.
In between pts, I also watched the new pairing of Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii playing against the Chinese Taipei pair. The Indonesian pair made many silly mistakes in the first set (esp Rizal) and they let the opponents (esp the guy) take control of the match. The Chinese Taipei pair took the first set 21-16. However, things were different in the second set. The Indonesian pair started to play their game and once they established a healthy gap, they were never in trouble. It was the same story in the rubber game. The Indonesian pair grabbed the second and third set 21-15, 21-12. I think this pair can go far and they are certainly better than either Devin/Vita or Anggun/Yunita. They will be in the top 20 in no time.
After the XD matches, I also watched some part of Mia Audina's match against Chen Li. There was no question, Mia was in control of the entire game from the start to the finish. A good win for her.
I took a break from watching the matches and went outside to shop around at the Yonex booth. At that time, there was a group of Chinese young players shopping for souveniers. I saw Zheng Bo, Zhao Tingting, and a couple of other unfamiliar faces. Then, I took a walk outside the stadium and was quite suprised to see that there were a number of restaurants surrounding it. I would probably try the Jumbo Seafood restaurant tomorrow night. While walking around, I bumped into Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg. They were searching for a cafeteria that sells sandwich. As I was not familiar with the area, I couldn't direct them to the right shop
At around 4:45pm, I bought some snacks and tucked into them while watching Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen playing against Anthony Clark/Robert Blair. I only watched the first set and it was a close encounter. The English pair was no pushover and they won the first set 21-18. Subsequently, the Danes had to retire because one of the player was injured. So, the England pair progressed to the semi-final.
The next match I watch was Flandy Limpele/Sigit Budiarto against Chan Choong Ming/Koo Kien Keat. The Indonesian pair was simply awesome and they were almost flawless in the first set. They won the first set convincingly at 21-12. The second set was a close one. The Indonesian established an early lead at 11-5, however, they started to make mistakes which led to the Malaysian pair gaining some quick pts. The Malaysians eventually caught up and the score was tied at 19-19. However, the Indonesian veteran pair proved that they still had something to show as they won the second set 21-19. Congrats to them!
After the match, there was another break as the next one will only begin at 6:30pm. Again, I wandered around the stadium and saw some fans asking for Sigit and Flandy's signatures. A group of primary school kids also had their wishes when Sigit gave them his. I also saw Rashid Sidek mingling with a group of Malaysian; Yap Kim Hock, Sigit, and Flandy sharing some friendly banter, with Flandy sending his regards to Rexy; and finally Yap Kim Hock giving his ever-erratic boys (CCM and KKK) a lecture.
When the break was over, the last matches of the day began. First, the Malaysian young pair, Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong vs Jonas Rasmussen/Peter Steffensen. It was more like a mis-match in the first set as the Danes were completely in control (esp JR). JR was very dominant and there was nothing the young Malaysian pair could do as they lost 10-21. They put up a gallant fight in the second set, however, it was not enough and they lost closely 21-18.
The same scenario was followed in the WD match between Jo Novita/Greysia Polii vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen. The Indonesian pair was still a class below the World Champion and they could not kill off the Chinese pair even when they had a few chances to do so. They ended up yielding the pts to the opponent. The second set was better as they could keep up all the way till 18-18. However, the World Champion still won quite convincingly 21-13, 21-18.
The local favorite, Ronald Susilo had a few good moments when he led Peter Gade 18-16 in the first set. However, his over-defensive strategy was simply too conservative and could not withstand Peter's constant attack. Peter won 21-19 in the first set. The second set was worse for Ronald as Peter raced ahead quicky to reach game point at 20-13. It was at this point that Ronald started to play some nice attacking game which yielded him a few more pts. However, it was not enough and Peter won 21-16.
The last match of the day was the local doubles pairing of Hendry Saputra Kurniawan/Hendra Wijaya against Thomas Laybourn/Lars Paaske. The first set was similar to yesterday's match. The Singaporean pair was quick to establish a huge lead as they won the first set 21-13. The second set was opposite of the first set. This time, the Danes took the initiative from the start and took the set without difficulty at 21-12. The real show began in the third. It was close from the start as both pairs played under the constant cheering from the local crowd. Hendry/Hendra was the first to reach 11. They had a few good pts to lead at 19-18. However, at this point, the Danes staged a comeback and they managed to reach match point at 20-19. The match was not over and there were indeed a few dramas which really increased the temperature inside the stadium. Crowds were loudly cheering every shot as the Singapore pair managed to equalize at 20-20 and then 21-21. At this point, it was a pity that they made the crucial mistakes and eventually lost 21-23. What a game....
Overall, it was another fantastic day. Hopefully, Team Indonesia will have 2 finalists on Sunday.

Well...I have not been to the SIS for a number of years and with the developments surrounding it (many new condominiums, etc), its no suprise that I was "lost"...hehehe :D Yup, no outside food was allowed. Only food from the Cheers stores inside the SIS was allowed inside the stadium. The food was okay....I bought a couple of bakpao ($1.40)...nasi lemak ($2.20) and an ice milo ($2). Altogether, it was S$5.60...rather expensive (esp the ice milo)...but I can understand.

I hope it's not too serious and that he recovers quickly.Well.don't be angry. i just tell my opinion. For me,theycan be the world no1, they are still very skillful and good players.Just hope them can recover soon.

Badmia,
Buildings around SIS was developed quite some times (perhaps, 4-5 year old at least.) Construction nearby cause you confusion. Even for me involving in that particular project, used to lost of the way sometime as road / area are often diverted or change.
Price of Food in SIS is NOT rather expensive. It is indeed very expensive charging like 6* hotel rate. You can get the same thing with half of the price that you paid outside. But outside food is NOT allowed. So the rules make us either eating expensive stuff or not eating at all.
BTW, what time will you be in SIS? I am at office (5-minute drive) and counting the time for gate opening.

"I det afgørende sæt pådrog Jens Eriksen sig en skade, der gjorde ham ude af stand til at spille færdig."

As Mag said, it should be Jens Eriksen who's injured.
They got it wrong, its not Eriksen.

Rest of badMania's post, snipped for brevity..
wow, must be a long day-thanks again for sharing your report and experiences during the QF, badMania..Regarding your comment of "seeing a number of restaurants surrounding it", hmm, sorry, are they new restaurants?? I thought you went to SIS before?? Cos i remember there were a commercial complex w/restaurants already on the left side of the stadium(if you are exiting the stadium). Yah, for sandwiches, i remember last yr. i couldn't find one nearby(i had to buy and bring some foods/drinks from near my hotel, prior to coming to SIS and put them on a makeshift table in front near the entrance door, as they wouldn't allow outside food to be brought in. I guess that's why the Japanese players who tried to eat McD, were told they couldn't do so)..:p:rolleyes:
The commercial complex with eating places were demolished. We thought of going there for lunch on the first day and found empty land. :D

Yah, it's typical for food prices here in the U.S., if you go to sports arenas..In some instances, even if you bring your own reg. bottled water, it can't be brought in..:p

I can understand the reasons behind forbidding outside food as it protects the food vendors in the stadium. However, the food available is hardly for human consumption. Its simply terrible. Furthermore, during the later days, there's such a crowd that it too difficult to buy anything and the food are all gone in no time. Its almost like starving the spectators...
