First of all, this is not a dismissive post. Rather, i was amazed to find some pro badminton players to be rather chubby and i wonder if there have been any others in the past who were very good ?
Take a look at Chin Eei Hui for example, in the Malaysian Women's doubles team...(she's on the left). They managed to take Gold at the commonwealth games 2006.

You call that ... fat  ? Obviously you haven't been to North America before o_0 ... (jks) :p ...
But seriously, I don't think it's fat... a lot of gymnists have fairly large thighs, but it's all muscles.

i think she just has a larger body structure, but those legs are muscles. even fat pro's probly have good technique and footwork to compensate. but they are at a disadvantage though, larger target for smash and larger. it'd be better if they shed the fat

I've heard that for strength and power sports, it is often good to have a slightly higher body fat % because it leads to greater strength and power gains. Something about hormone levels.
Is it possible that for some players, who have a "power hitter" style, that the slightly greater weight is offset by the gains in power?

maybe helps in weight transfer, but it would only be marginal anyways unless the greater weight is muscle, if its fat, then the disadvanatages would outweight the small power gain, ex) slower footowork, less endurance, lower ability to jump, etc.

some people can have good cardio vascular ability but be chubby. also some women look chubby when it is really muscle, just the way they are built. Men don't have the same half muscle/half fat thing.

Zhang Jun definitely did not look fat in 2000.
Fat top players? The answer is soooo obvious: Taufik Hidayat for MS, Mia Audina for WS.

you also have to remember muscle structure for individuals differ.
some look fat but in reality what you see is merely a layer of fat covering muscle.
look at olympic heavy weight lifters... they look fat. but we can't even lift a small fraction of what those guys train with on a daily basis...
some people look cut. simply because they lack this layer of fat covering their muscle, while others look chubbier/plumper due to this layer of fat.
Choong Tan Fook & Lee Wan Wah definitely are a class above the rest.
In 1 tournament the commentator mentioned they are the 2 biggest players on the circuit and their sheer body size is intimidatingto opponents.Maybe that's their tactic.
I think their pockets should be quite fat too.

CEH maybe not as slim as WPT but she got no fat tummy and me and my friend admire her for that..(becoz both of us have that!!!hahha)and she have a energetic smash!admire for that too. and long as i remembered...she can jump..and most of us can't!! so for me..she is not considered as fat!!

Zhang Jun is very strong~! He's one of the few, if not the only one in the Chinese national team who can do quadruple skipping ie, he can swing 4 times in 1 skip, according to my coach. They train together in 2000 and that's when he saw Zhang Jun did that during skipping exercises. Fat still? Well, that's for you to ponder.:D

Zhang Jun's just a little on the chubby side, I would say he's a natural endomorph but with badminton he keeps relatively fit. Another player would be Gu Jun, ex World and Olympic champion with Ge Fei. Heryanto Arbi was quite fit when he was playing, though I'm not surprised to hear that he gained a lot after retiring - his brother is Eddy Hartono, former Olympic silver medalist in MD, who was definitely on the bigger side even in his playing days.

I don't know about "fat" exactly, but Ant Clark used to be on the bigger side (most obviously in early '07) - he just looked like a normal bloke but still moved brilliantly. His weight loss for AE '08 was very noticeable, perhaps done in prep for the Olympics.
