Congratulations to all those involved in the new RichmondPRO Badminton Center:)! It's hard enough to get started in the first place. Best of luck with the business side of things! We could always use more quality drop-in places;).

Thanks for all the response and well wishes. To answer some questions:
1) Rates: court rental is $16/hr. We'll be having some good intro deals so keep your eyes peeled.:) :) :)
2) Hours: we're planning to be opened 9 am - 11 pm. Some tweaking might be needed depending on daily response.
3) Coaches: a few of them are Yao Ming, Kiran Kumar, Alvin Lau, Chris Lee, Harry Pan. There will be a bunch of assistants there too.
4) Update: some of the courts are being layed down this week, most of the lights are in place. The inside looks very.... green hehe
5) Pics: a few will be coming soon after the inital set of courts are layed down.
6) Out-of-towners: make sure you let us know when you're in town. Always nice to meet fellow bc'ers
That's it for now. Will update again soon.

Richard (as I understand it) is one of four partners. Ximing YAO was a coach at VRC for a long while and has not been happy with the way that things were ran at VRC (esp. by the head coach there). This is a great opportunity for Ximing to actually get things going based on his knowledge and experience AND be properly credited with training the players instead of someone else (who shall remain nameless) taking credit.
When LB comes back into town, he's going have to allocate more days in order to recover from being tortured at (in no particular order) VRC, C1/C2, Collingwood and now Richmond PRO!

I was there today with Mr. Mystery, aka Mr. CD-ROM. The ceiling is about C2 and SmashCity. Three courts are ready for demonstration purpose. A group of recreational players were invited to knock around. The distance between single serving line and the wall is too close in my opinion, a potential liability issue. The concrete wall is not padded at all. I can't imagine someone smash up their body parts in a rare but possible event.

Pete LSD, I think you are the type of player who can hit the shuttle but don't know what badminton is all about. An average badminton player know where/when to hit. You don't hit the shuttle if it is going out just for the sake of hitting. I was one of the players invited to test the court. The place is perfectly designed for badminton. All the players gave good feedback when I was there. I think you have to seriously review your playing style. No body in their right mind will slam their body to the wall. The distance between the back line to the wall is more than 4 feet. Only players who intend to hurt themselves will intentionally slam their body to the wall. I hope you are not one of them.

07-02-2006, 01:45 PM
sry string, i will have to disagree with you there. i'm sure that four feet is good enough and that isnt wut my post is about.
i'm sure that there are other reasons why you should have a good distance between the back line and the wall, such as spectators. you cant deny the fact that there are going to be people sitting along the wall watching and if there isnt enough room, that will interfere with the line calling. some of us are NOT professionals and cant instantly tell when the shot is out so many factors can influence our line-calls.
Pete LSD
07-02-2006, 02:36 PM
I am just speaking from the point of potential liability, forseen and unforseen.
If you have time why not come to VRC on Wed and Sat evening to try out the courts.

four feet?
Too little space. Anyone who has seen me go back for my big scissor kick smash in coubles knows I tend to land behind the court.
I've played a in a couple gyms with only 3-5 feet behind the court. Not only is it a physical limitation, it also plays psychologically. Soon as you get near the back of the court, you tend to leave shuttles that are in for fear of hitting your racquet.
Will still check it out when I'm there in August.

I am just speaking from the point of potential liability, forseen and unforseen.but why bother with that concern, when it's not your own business? i'm sure the business owners have taken those possibilities into consideration. if you happen to sit on the sideline and you get your face smoked then worry about it. in the meantime, this is another good badminton facility for a district that definitely can support these clubs!

I have not seen the place yet (hopefully sometime before they open) but I understand that there will be no on allow to sit along the back wall. The sitting/waiting area is in the middle of the facility so I would assume that the owners/operators will request people to move to the sitting/waiting area when not playing. Not ideal but better safe than sorry.
As for the distance, 4 ft is probably cutting it close. Regulation court requires 5 feet between courts and 8 feet between end to end courts. Only time will tell if 4 ft is enough to prevent some players from destroying their racquets or bodies :)

Hi everyone
I have just returned from the badminton centre and this is what's in store. We hope to open for play on Saturday 8 July, but is subject to final inspection on Weds. Please call 604-231-0999 to confirm. If it's a go, times of operation are from 9am - 11 pm. I will post a confirmation after the inspection.
We're really pushing hard to have things completed and hopefully, we won't have to answer the oft asked question "When are you opening?" anymore. :p :p . For all those who have dropped by for a sneak peak or for a tryout session, thank you for all the feedback. I think generally, the centre has been received positively. For those on BC discussing the distance between courts, etc, let me assure no one was hurt during these trials (or close to being injured :). Anyway we've done what we can to fit the courts within the dimension of the buidling and yet make them playable.
Coaching and camps will begin shortly after the opening. Please call the centre at the above number if you're interested or simply drop by. We are still building our website and there are many pics that need to be taken for it. The nuts and bolts are in place though.
To book a court, please call 604-231-0999 or once again, drop by. Please be patient as I'm sure there will be an initial rush. Herer's the summer playing schedule:
- drop-in 9am -12 noon $4.50/session. we have 5 courts reserved for drop-ins at first and will adjust according to demand
- rentals 12 noon - 11pm $16/hr.
INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL
Purchase a 12 x 1 hr session card for $168.00.
Works out to about $14/hr! Now, that's a great deal!
This special will run for 1 month and you have 6 months to use up your card from the day of purchase. I suggest for everyone to stock up :p
Well, we're rounding the final corner but there is still work to be done. We're trying to enjoy the process but come Saturday we hope you'll all drop by to help us feel better about it. Please introduce yourselves to us using your BC name (you can ask for me, madbad). Those who already know me, don't be smart asses! :D :D
Oh, nearly forgot–please park in the back. We have a parking lot there and that's where the main entrance is. Unfortunately, your car will be towed if you park in the front.
Till the next report

The latest news is that we have a second inspection scheduled for Fri am as a result of the initial Weds inspection. Naturally, the opening date will depend on the outcome. Three of our coaches were present too to hand out a few "spankings". Thank God I was too tired to play against them. :p :p
Over the last 2 weeks we have had a ton of enquiries and we thank everyone for their interest. We hope to be able to accomodate you for the days/time slots you requested. Thanks again, everyone

Too bad that I couldn't play a couple of games but my intention was to show the Winex products anyhow.
My impression of the place is that it is great. Clear ceiling height is the same as C2. Others have made note of the 4' clearance between the walls and the back of the court. Yeah, could be better with a foot more but that moves the courts ends closer and that could hamper folks from getting to the courts so that's a tradeoff. Lights are good although it would be nice to have dark curtains covering the top to avoid lights from the other courts. My only other concern is courts 1 and 2 being end to end and the distance between the two ends are too close (for my comfort).
The court mats are from Victor or Pro-Court whereas the ones in C1 are from Gelflor and C2 has the Nagase mats. WWCBro mentioned that the mats are not as "grippy" as the ones in C2.
BF'ers who were there this evening included Pete LSD, TTT, Speed76 (Mr & Mrs), Wood_22_Chuck and bro and Mr. Mystery (aka CD-ROM). NB: I thought Pete LSD was nuts to be playing a game with nylon shuttle using his 32lbs tensioned racquet.

Thanks for the fun tonight! :D
Everyone was very friendly and the games very, very fun, especially playing against provincial-level players.
The surface is very reminiscent of the flooring at Cameron Community Centre. The concrete back wall is too close to the ends of the courts. Not more than two racket lengths from the back line (singles).
Ceiling height is good. The place feels cavernous!
I could be wrong about this, but it seems like only the VRC players were bringing out shuttles to the court.
When changing sides, there's a big perspective change, as on one side, you're looking at the back wall pretty close to the end of the opponents side, and on change-over, now the back wall is FARRRRRRRR away.
It was great seeing WWC in person again, and some familiar faces from Cambie CC and socializing.
Also managed to try out the 21-rally-pt system and it's actually creates a new dimension to the game. I recommend people actually try it out before meting out judgment.
Thanks madbad and gang, for a wonderful evening :D

Just wanna thank our hosts for inviting us to check out the place. I am very grateful for the chance to play in another classy establishment:).
For sure, me and my partner were quite happy to provide feathers to play against a certain provincial level player:p. Actually me think we got the best deal out of the lot of us;).
Not only did VRC members bring their numbers to the club, they brought out their egalitarian habits with them too:D. Definitely lots of Sosan Black shuttles flying around the courts.
Lighting around the courts is not perfect but it's more than adequate. Like wwcbro, I too find that the flooring is not as grippy as C1 or C2 but it still does the job well and forces me not to slack off too much on my footwork. IMO, the only major downside is the feel of the courts which is reminence to Cameron CC but at least it's not a John Braithwaite CC type of hardness:p. However, I am one of those players who are spoilt by VRC environment so it might not apply to most players:o. The place looks great! Good work, guys!
Thanks for the fun tonight! :D

Best put in my bit of observation...after being "dragged" in by WWC's comment:D
Did dropped in about a week ago just to hit around and I concurred with most of the observations made by others. As for the mat being less "grippy" it is all relative...If the mat is squeaky clean it will be be more "grippy" :) When I commented the mat is not as grippy...it is not that you will slide all over the place. It a million times more grippy that any wooden floor. It is a positive comment. The underpads, I feel is equal or better than C2. The back wall, well, it is there. The only other minor point is the net...the holes in the net are just the right size that if you smash into the net the shuttle will stuck there. So, another learning tool for "Why you must prepare for your smash":D
No comment on the comparison with Cameron Community Centre, as I have never played there before.
Other than that, I enjoyed myself and thank you to Madbad, Richard, Edward & Tim.

Hi Everyone
Good News! The Badminton Centre is scheduled to open on Sunday 9 July. Hours will be 9am -11pm. We have a few little things to clear up but as far as the courts are concerned, they're ready. I'm off to a meeting now and will provide an update later on. Thank you

Thanks Richard & Madbad for the amusive night, I would say the club was satisfactory.:) Got an idea of drop-in people....the club can provide checkered card for whoever collected ten stamps may get one free drop-in, exactly as same as those pearl bubble tea shop's favored style, I think it helps to retain the constant customers.

The 4th badminton centre in Richmond is going to open in September. It is about the size of Clear1 (with 6 courts) and is less than 3 min walk from RichmondPro (Minoru/Alderbridge). I think Richmond is the only city in Canada/North America that has so many badminton centres and courts.

Where is this one? I don't think Richmond is able to substain all four locations but I may be wrong.

You are just a wizard. How did you know I would come here? :D
I haven't played this 21x3. In the past in our training sessions I played:
- 15x3, server score;
- 15x3, rally score (similar to 21x3);
- 15x3, 1 using server score and another rally score; etc...
I think the 21x3 is not much different than the 15x3, rally score. Personally I did not like it at all. It just has to do with my playing style. In this type of game I had the most trouble against the guys that were fast with very good smashes but not so good at placement shots. ;)

Pete LSD, mind your own business. I have some reasons I don't want to start a new thread. At the moment I just want people to know there will be another new badminton centre coming soon. As you may have noticed, the name of this thread is "New Badminton Centre, Richmond BC" and I did not write anything off this topic. The name of this subforum is RicmondPro Badminton Centre. ;)
We don't know your reasons of posting in this thread of this particular forum, so people will have to use our own interpretation and inferences, whether they are good or bad.
Oh ya, Pete LSD has the same "privilege" as you do. He can respond to your posting bascially any way he wants (subject to profanity I guess :) ). Hope you recognize that. Also, posting information in public and then telling people to mind their own business...does it make sense to you? You wanted to get the word out right...but don't you want some feedback though?
Oh by the way, there are moderators in this forum. So no, you can't really write whatever and wherever you want. ;)

BingoB,
Let me give you some suggestion, buddy.
The best thing in BC/BF is, the mods tend to give us a lot of freedom in discussion, instead of using rather robust/over-strict rules. There's no need to use a lawyer-like statement to argue about a word or a title. Whatever your intention is, it seems not-accpetable by a lot of other members in the forum, including me. If you want to introduce something new, it's always welcome to share. However, intentionally hijack other threads, it's not acceptable any time.
What do you mean by you can write whatever you want? Can I just drive the cars like zip-zap on the road, and claim, since it belongs to the public, I can do whatever I want, and others can't even complain?
Give you some advice. If you want to make friends here, rather than being the public enemy, please behave. We welcome different ideas, but we don't accept mis-behaved manners. If you want to against such rules, and still go for your "boundless freedom", the BingoB user name will be disappear very soon, I suppose...
Good luck...

The place looks good. If really nitpicking, may be for court 6 and 7, the sideline is a little bit closer to the wall then usual. But just like the distance between the baseline and backwall, it's mostly psychological. As madbad told me, it may actually be a good thing, since you can use the sidewall as a reference to judge whether the birdy will go out or not.

The next van trip is surely in plan. I got quite a few requests from local badminton players to hook them up with the van gangs. I am sure frendies also spread the word around in MTRL as well. So, don't be surprised that the next visit become an "invasion from the East". :p
For some personal reason, I might need to book more site-seeing, shopping and hiking activities, rathern than 24/7 baddy battles, if I do come with the group. However, I will definitely sqeeuze some time, and go for the torture sessions in various sites. Plus, never count me (or us) out in FOOD parties. :D

Good, now I know who Smashingbird is. Will be good to have your group over starting next week.
Actually, I was a very gentle bouncer, nothing remotely close to what they teach at the Zinedine Zindane school of bouncing.
We also racked our brains on how to use our initials and we settled for PRO. So in the future, you don't have to write the whole name out; just use PRO.

The idea of the black curtains is to take away the glare from the overhead lights from the court in front of you. They will be long enough to serve that purpose. It's not there to provide a backrop or partitioning between courts. We want the facility to have an open feel and not feel divided.

There is more than enough gap between the others (I think between 7 and 8 ft or more) so that is not an issue.

agree with this view. constructive suggestions are a good thing. a smart business should reach out and listen to what customer thinks about their business. ultimately, happy customer is the key to their eventual success.
of course, from the other point of view, customers should not expect businesses to implement all suggestions that are given, good or bad.

Sure, most suggestions should be looked at. In reality, even if it's a good one, it takes time to implement it. Imagine having to put to use several suggestions. In the end, the owners have their business model set out and if suggestions fall within it, they're generally receptive. Me personally, I love hearing all the feedback, just as long as people don't expect us to have Rexy here next month running a clinic :D :D (hmmm.... now, that's an idea :p )

the poles in the middle are too close to some of the courts, and spaces between the courts are also too close, which makes it dangerous. SOmetimes ppl will run to the other court coz they cant stop.
Wow, we have a lot of "killers" around :p
Have you have an opportunity to try out the courts yet? From those who have, the poles have not been an issue. As for court spacing, to my knowledge, again little or no grousing so far. We realise that everyone will have their opinion on the set up but we can't build the courts to their specs. We have a defined space (with pillars) and we've layed out the courts in the most efficient, and hopefully safe, manner possible. Thanks for the feedback, it's been noted.

Cappy 75 had asked the question of how to request a private lesson on another thread:
To arrange private lessons you can PM me or call PRO (604-231-0999) with your contact # and the info will be passed on to the coach of your choice. Please indicate what level you're interested in. The coach will then contact you to arrange for a suitable time. You pay the coach yourself, who will settle then with PRO (we have a system set up). Rate is $38/hr.
Hope that's all clear. Any other questions, I'm here.

I got some feedbacks from some of my friends after they played badminton at RichPro. There are some issues you guys have to address about the facility. 1) there aren't any air circulation at the far end court, can;t just have that entrance providing fresh air for the whole complex 2) the boy's washroom, the curtain is too short and not wide enough, so some water are out, and making the floor very wet and slippery, its very dangerous. ( dont want to get sued ) 3) need something to block between the shower area and to the door, just feels weird! 4) the ladies' washroom, the water pressure for the shower heads aren't strong enough, takes forever to shower, and waste lots of water too...More the pressure, shorter time to shower, save more money!!!

To address these concerns:
1) Circulation–we have 3 doors open to promote better circulation plus we have ground level fans going at the same time. It's a hot time of the year but these temperatures are an aberration. Once they drop I'm sure things will be more tolerable.
2) Men's locker room–we have lengthened the curtains and put rubber matting on the floor next to the showers.
3) Door to locker room–we have installed a stopper to limit how much the door opens. You shouldn't be able to see inside them from the outside
4) Water pressure in Ladies' locker room–we checked them and they seem to be fine. Acceptable water pressure.
Softhands, don't rely just on your friends' observations, why don't you come by and see for yourself. :)

And before you start thinking I checked the ladies' shower heads personally.... :p
Madbad, did you come out unphased when when checking the ladies shower heads? he he he!
Maybe softhands is referring to when more than one shower head is on therefore the overall pressure on each maybe a bit low. Or maybe both men and women's shower preassure should be turned up a tab.
I have not had a chance to try out the the Pro club but if I get the time I would try to. I was in Richmond during the weekend visiting family/relatives and played badminton at Thompson on Sunday.

Softhands–it is certainly not our intention to be inconsiderate to our customers. In fact I would say we have gone out of our way to provide the best customer service possible. We have recently acquired more benches and if need be, we can move a couple more to the locker rooms. We are also sourcing lockers, which will complete the locker rooms.

It's for sure that the business owner should "please" the customers. However, as us customers, we need to respect the time and effort the business spent for us.
Give it time and please only provide suggestions in a "friendly" tone. Somehow, I feel some of your suggestions are a bit offensive. True, we are the paying customers, and want to enjoy all the expereince. However, no business can satisfy every single individual, especially need to consider the cost and profit as well. If we are paying affordable price, sometimes, we can't expect all the stuff to match the luxury standard. :o
STRING

I agree with you LazyBuddy. No business can 100% satisfy every single individual, especially Softhand. I have been playing at this place every week. I notice lots of improvements since opening day. Lots of positive and constructive feedback from players, except Softhand. One thing I notice from 1st tread is that the tone of Dontkillme, Birdiekiller and Softhand sound very similar. I wonder if they are related to each other??? The washroom door issue keep coming up from these people even though it been taken care of. Well Softhand, if you worry that other can see you or your lady friend(maybe your girlfriend) in the washroom. I can guarantee you in won't happen unless you purposely run into the opposite *** washroom. I hope you won't do this!!! Only people with this kind of intention will come out with this idea!! Based on your complaints, I guess you maybe one of the regular there. If you like to go there, why don't you just address the issues to the business owner. If you not sure who, you can ask at the front desk. Personally I found the owner very friendly and open to all suggestions. LazyBuddy is right on the price too. Let me put it this way, if you are willing to pay only 25K, expect to get a Honda civic, don't expect to drive a Ferrari!!!
A good idea for the club is to have a suggest box (if they not yet have one) which would be useful for customer input.

from wut i've seen, i dont like. simple as that. if u read my other posts i've given examples from the drop-ins which i went to and didnt enjoy. its not like i directly said that i didnt enjoy taking their lessons. i have no right to because i havent taken them. u say it like i'm just attacking them but IF ur the vincent i think u are then u would recall me being at c2 last week. maybe i shouldve taken a look at their lessons before the harsh words were said but after seeing the adv lessons, i stand by my limited opinion.
went to PRO a few more times. although i cant rly bring myself to understand why the other 2 courts in the half of the centre arent being used during the drop, doesnt rly make that much of a difference. my friend started complaining to me that there wasnt any food and he wanted some after playing long and hard games :D.
we were also talking about how kool the mens washroom looks when the lights are turned off. however, there is/was little air going in there so it got kinda hard to breathe after a while.
because i havent stepped on the back to back courts yet, they DO look pretty close to eachother. made me uneasy when i was walking between them to get back to the benches. the other courts look completely fine. there was one time when my racket skimmed the wall but thats because the birdie was lifted way out during a drill and i still went for it.
looks good still. would anyone care to explain to me how the coupons work and how u get them?

I think the coupon was in one of the Chinese dailies as RichmondPro took out an ad in the paper.
The Richmond Review local paper (Aug 5th edition) has a full page on the facility detailing when Richard and Kelvin came up with the idea (back in the World Juniors that was held in Richmond back in 2004).
I checked the Review website but it looks like they don't have the article online yet. I will give it a few more days and if it is still not available, maybe I will scan the article and post here.

Hi All
Just got back from out of town, so haven't posted much. To matters at hand.
I'm glad some of you got to read the article on PRO in last Saturday's Richmond Review. It was really nice of them to dedicate a whole page to us. Naturally, I missed picking up a copy as I wasn't around so if someone could scan the article and post it up for us, that would be great.
Beginner Summer Camp is in full swing. Thanks to Chris Lee and assistant for running the camp. I think we have 16 students, which is wonderful. The advanced Camp starts next Monday so for those still interested, sign up quicky!
Tonight, we had a friendly inter club match with our friends from VRC. Fun was had by all with some enthralling matches keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats. PRO won the match 14-9 but in the end, everyone had a good time and went home happy (and tired :D ). Thanks to all the VRC members who participated. We hope to see you around more.
Also thanks to all the BC Forum members who showed up tonight to support the event.
We have an upcoming ANNOUNCEMENT to make. However, we need to go sort out some logictical issues first but hopefully we'll be able to make it in a couple of days.
Till the next time

last time i went to richmond pro for drop in, i found that although it has more courts compared to clear 1/2 it seems really small and really squished. might be the way they arrange the courts. but other than that, the courts itself seeems pretty nice.

I understand we'll be using the 8 courts in the inner part of the facility for the tournament so courts 1 and 2 won't feature in the equation. In any case I'm also told we could be (finally) putting up some curtains for these courts next week. We'll see.
