Speaking of food, there's a lot to try about in Taiwan...
U wouldnt want to miss the 'Xiao Long Bao' there and some Taiwan famous snacks are also mouth-watering... such as 'mua ji'
Spicy food like 'Ma La Wo' also a favourite of foreigners.. It is something like a spicy steamboat
And speaking back to badminton....
I wonder if LCW is going to Chinese Taipei Open?

BJ, which camera are u using these days?
The camera that I used today is the Sony V3 camera. I was needed to go to other places in the afternoon, and so, I can only carry this little thing. The aperature of V3 is very limited so the only thing I could do is to pull up the ISO, which degrades the quality of pictures.
Starting from tomorrow, I will be taking my Canon Rebel XT to Taipei Open, and pictures should be a lot better as the lens is a lot faster. :)

There are 4 courts in the gym (the place is an university gym.)
BadmintonRepublic.com is a badminton site that I built since two years ago. Now, it is the largest badminton site in Taiwan. A lot of people used/referred information directly from my site.
My forum member, "jcl", whose English name is "Colin Jao", is the original owner of his pictures (as indicated at his pictures.)

If people kept on using and modifying pictures from my site without getting permissions from the original authors first, there will be no more pictures sharing.
If you want to use our pictures, you need to be aware of the following things:
1. Do not modify the picture and do not remove the author's name. It is clearly to see the last two pictures are my pictures, but the person who used my pictures modified them and took my name out from it.
2. State clearly where you got the pictures.
3. If we say you cannot share these pictures, then it means you can only see them by watching them on badmintonrepublic.com. You can not copy, modify, spread, or reproduce them.
The above site/person failed to do so, and it has caught our attention. If this kept on happening, there will be no picture posting anymore.
Is the picture modified? i think i saw the names below the picture.

Whats the matter?
bluejeff
06-24-2006, 12:09 PM
Whats the matter?
It's simple. Someone wants free lunch and don't even want to give credits to people who give him free lunch.
Event timeline:
1. People (including myself) took pictures at Taipei Open.
2. We posted our pictures online and let others see.
3. Other people (more than one site) copied and modified the pictures that we posted online. All authors/photographers' names on the pictures were all erased/modified and people who used our pictures never mention where he got the pictures. All they did was posting those pictures as if it's their own pictures.
4. We were informed about this by other members of the site and started to make contacts on this matter.
5. Some of the violators apologized and agreed to follow the guidelines while others think everything in the world should be free and people should share everything with them and they should be able to do whatever they want, including erasing authors/photographers name on the pictures and copy everything they want.
6. Due to above circumstances, we photographers don't feel good about it as all our pictures are now becoming others work. Therefore, we will stop posting any further photos of Taipei open online.
Personally, I don't like those people. Especially with those people who have no respect to the photographers. If they want to use pictures that way, then they can do the same thing as me: Buy an international air ticket and fly to the tournament yourself and take your own pictures. "Sharing" is not a word for making everything free.
Here is what I think:
-I don't mind if people download my pictures and save it in their computers for ones viewing.
-I don't mind if people re-post my pictures to other sites as long as they mention the source and not to modify the pictures.
I do agree with BlueJeff.

bluejeff, before i post my suggestions/opinions, just want to say thank you for taking your time to go to the tournament to take some pics and post/share them here. Your hard work is much appreciated.
Now, regarding what happened, i didn't quite follow, but sorry to hear abt it.
But here are my suggestions if you, or anyone else, want to do in the future to avoid a similar situation:
1. I know this will take a bit of work, but how abt if you put somekind of a watermark across your picture. Like those from the Getty's website??..I know it *might* take a bit more work, but if you do, even if people want to copy/save them on their computer and *EDIT* them, they won't be able to erase the watermark from the pic as easily, if it's possible. Unless, they know a way to do so, which personally i'm not familiar with..
2. Another way is to apply an encrypted code(s) on the pics, so if someone wants to d/l them, it won't be as easy for them to do so.
Anyways, those are just my suggestions. But if you feel those are too extreme, then that's fine also...;) :)

the fact that these photos were taken by bluejeff means that they are in some sense his property. he was under no obligation to even share the photos with any of us but chose to do so anyway. all bluejeff asked for was that others acknowledge his effort in taking these photos, which i think is a valid and legitamate request. i mean all one needs to do is to identify him as the source, something which can take as little as 2 seconds to do.
anyway here's thanks to bluejeff for his generosity. looking forward to more photos.
p.s. the photos are already free to begin with, and since no money is involved, there is no way to even remotely link this to piracy.

Oh... I was just amazed that someone who stole software would be able to make righteous comments about other people's hardwork being taken.
Of course, from what you have just said here, its alright to steal, but not modify stolen goods. As a thief, it would be hypocritical to be caught saying: "I stand behind Blue Jeff ... I guess it's just someone who doesn't know how it feels when your hard work was taken and modified as someone's work".

Bluejeff has the right to his work irregardless whether he paid the players or not. Copyright protects the intellectual work. He has the right to his picture of the sunset even though he did not pay the sun for setting. So by saying his work should be free is plain wrong.

I agree with your basic concept in general. But as I used to use a lot of priated software and in fact, I still do with that CD authoring software in my computer and I admit the guilt, I wouldn't be able to criticise someone else for doing it and make righteous comments since its mea culpa one way or another.

u don't pay the players, so the pic should be free :)
Well, I don't think about this often, but in fact, I do pay them. I paid for the Taipei Open tickets and I paid Yonex and other badminton companies a lot of money every single year. Personally, I don't think there is very many people pay more than I do to badminton in terms of money (if that's what you care.)
It is up to me to post pictures or not, and I will be the one who makes decisions. So far, the pictures are free as I have not yet charge anyone a penny. The only thing that I am asking is not to modify pictures and do specify the source when re-posting. Is that something too much to ask?
About the watermark. Heck, I am not good at photo-editing. Every time when I do those, I need to scratch my head and try to learn how to do it by asking my friends. I wanted to make those marks lighter, but I'm not sure how to make it work generally applied to all pictures.
Those watermarks didn't exist at the day 1 and day 2 pictures because I trust everyone in the badminton world and I never thought about adding those marks on. However, after I was informed by several people about the incidents, I couldn't post pictures like I used to. Adding them on was not fun for me as it took me a long time to put them on. I don't want to do those, but what choices do I have? People at other sites use all kinds of excuses to break the rules and claim those pictures are now theirs. It made me wondered why must I share pictures online? I know people want to see pictures, and I am willing to share them, but why do people kept on asking for more and more?
I went to the Taipei open pretty much every day and I enjoy games and environments there. By providing pictures online is a way to let people know how players did in here. If you want to ask for more, please buy an air ticket as I did and fly to the tournament yourself.
i think bluejeff is not a badminton fan

Although the tour is over, there "might be" more pictures coming up. (I am having some problems in hardware on reading out the pictures)
thanks all who are making peace. and i agree, we should make peace in BC.
as for the photos, i think they key is to share. even if the photographer puts his name on it, i think it is totally OK. afterall, by copyright law, the photographer do own the picture (as it is a public event) and he has the right to put appropriate credits on them.
as long as we can enjoy the picture, that's all that matters, right?
