Greetings,
Please respond if interested.
Looking to form a group for our Coaching And Training Sessions (CATS).
Venue: High Street Road, Glen Waverley, Victoria, Australia.
Time: Every Wednesday 8:00pm-10:30pm.
Level: For Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Skills.
Trainees Intake: Maximum of 16 trainees. Venue has 4 courts.
Please respond to this thread so that CATS can start ASAP (estimated to start on Wednesday, 26-July-2006).
If you do not wish to join the Forum @BadmintonCentral, you can email me direct chris@cccbadminton.com
I will send you 3 ATTACHMENTS; namely the Address/Map of our Venue, the CATS Program and the Enrolment Form.
============
CCC Badminton Club was formed in the hope that it will help more people to enjoy playing badminton.
CCC Club has 2 objectives:
1. To help those who are beginners to get to know the game quicker.
2. To provide experienced players with a venue to train.
FRIDAY CCC SOCIALS (max 32 players only) = Concentrate on Playing Games.
The PLAYING OF GAMES is the only activity involved in this session.
Link is http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32267
WEDNESDAY CATS (max 16 trainees only) = Concentrate on Learning Skills & Perfecting Strokes.
In this session, COACHING AND TRAINING are the main activities involved, with a few PRACTICE GAMES being played at the end of the session.
COACHING is performed by Mr Chris Hoh who has over 20 years of badminton coaching experience, yet is innovative in his coaching techniques. You will receive invaluable information/instruction/demonstration of different SKILLS from him.
Chris' coaching course is a structured program, with 20 chapters involved. And the Chapter of the Week is taught in a strict order of application. The session is conducted in a formal learning environment.
TRAINING is performed by doing DRILLS (repetitious exercises) to perfect your strokes and footwork. You will be doing drills suggested by Chris, the best drills related to the Chapter of the Week.
PLEASE NOTE: Chris does not provide Circuit (Physical) Training.
Chris is only qualified for Badminton Coaching. He believes that for Circuit Training, e.g. steps, trunk curls, squat jumps, press-ups, pull-ups, squat thrusts, etc, it is better for you to employ a qualified gym instructor.
WEDNESDAY CATS Session is conducted as follows:
8:00 pm to 8:30 pm Warm-up Drills and Warm-up Footwork (Dancing)
8:30 pm to 9:00pm Learning the Chapter of the Week
9:00 pm to 9:30pm Practising the Chapter of the Week
9:30 pm to 10:00pm Drills for the Chapter of the Week
10:00pm to 10:30pm Playing Games using the Chapter of the Week
Payment Structure
A different fee structure (different from FRIDAY SOCIALS) will apply. The calculations will be based on Chris' professional coaching fees and the number of trainees. But it would be in the vicinity of $15 to $20 for the 2.5hr session.
If there are 16 trainees it would be $15 per session. So far we have 8 interested, and if this is the final number, it would be $20 per session.
BTW, Chris' coaching fees (as of 11-July-2006) for Private Coaching (1-on-1) is set at $30 per hour. This does not include court hire.

Greetings,
A question was asked by one of my trainees who is repeating the CCC Program of 20 Chapters.
Question: If I am happy with my Overhead Clears (one of the chapters), and if the Chapter of the Week is on the Overhead Clears, can I do something else?
Answer: If you are happy with your skills for the Chapter of the Week, you are welcomed to practise other skills during the session.
You have your court for the full 2.5 hours and you can choose whatever practice you wish. However, you have to find another trainee who would be willing to be your practice/drill partner.
But I always say “Don't just think of the stroke production in isolation”.
You might be able to do a good Overhead Clear when the shuttle is being hit to where you are standing. But if you cannot do a good Overhead Clear when the shuttle is being hit to position away from you, then you have not mastered the Overhead Clear.
So, what I am saying is “You must think of stroke production together with the necessary footwork involved”.
However, if you can return a good Overhead Clear, whether a shot is hit to you as a Defensive Clear or an Attacking Clear and whether that shot is hit to a position away from you, then I don't see any reason why you have to go through that chapter again. If you have mastered the subject matter of the chapter, you are encouraged to practise your other strokes/skills.
But don't fall into a trap, for example, of practising the Smash when we are doing the Overhead Clear, and then later practising the Overhead Clear when we are doing the Smash.

Greetings,
I received a suggestion that if I need to make up the numbers, a parent would like to be in CATS as well.
Parents of trainees are most welcomed. In fact, my private customers will tell you about this.
In my Private 1-on-1 Coaching for a younger child, I always ask the parents to participate as well. They pay me for the 2 hours($60) to coach. It does not matter if I am coaching 1, 2, 3 or 4 persons. I feel better when the information/instruction/demonstration of that session is received/acquired by more people. And it is not good for the parents to sit idly just to watch the coaching. The parents(most of them play Badminton too) might as well learn something new and get some exercise.

Greetings,
I have received several emails regarding our fee structure for CATS.
It looks like our Wednesday CATS (Coaching And Training Session) could start with 8 trainees. Therefore CATS will take up 2 courts for the night, being 1 court for 4 trainees.
I will make a bold decision. I will structure CATS to be $15 per trainee for a 2.5hr session.
I will allow the other 2 courts for SOCIAL Badminton, charging $10 per player for the 2.5hr session.

Hi Helmut,
See that you are in BadmintonCentral Forum now... CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Spoke to Paul & Sherryn Danaher last night. They are asking if you have completed/corrected our CCC 2005 Xmas Party photos.
Paul also suggested it is time for us to have another Social/Dinner soon. We will have to get in touch with Jenny, Jerry, Herman, Judy, Mike, etc...
Of course, we will have a lot of new faces from our CCC @Glen Waverley for our next Social/Dinner.
Our last Social Event was 10-pin Bowling, and our last Social Dinner was at Bismi Restaurant @Brunswick.
Some new members might give us better ideas/suggestions.

Hi Chris,
I'm interested in this coaching seesion. But is it only for young trainees? I'm afraid I would be too embarrassed to stand among 10 kids....hehe...hope I am not the only adult there.
7.30-10.00 is even better for me.

Hi aannn,
You are nicely placed in the middle of our family of trainees.
Based on the responses so far, I am expecting 4 younger than you and 4 older.
Those who have attended our CCC Coaching @MSAC, Albert Park, like Helmut, hkhung, etc will tell you that our usual age group ranges from 6 to 60.
And the usual experience of our trainees ranges from “have never played Badminton before” to “have played for 30 years”.

Hi BadFever,
So far 10 trainees have shown interests in our Wednesday CATS.
Therefore, there is still 1 court left for our Wednesday Social Badminton.

Greetings,
I received several enquiries regarding our fee structure for Wednesday CATS (7:30pm-10:00pm).
As of 26-July-2006
$20......Trainee of casual attendance for selected chapters (48 hours booking required).
$15......Trainee of regular attendance for all chapters (enrolment application required).
$10......Social Player of casual attendance for playing games (no coaching/instruction required).
Confirmation from trainees is still not finalised.
But it looks like our CATS (Coaching And Training Session) might start with 8 to 12 trainees.
Therefore 2 to 3 courts will be taken up by CATS for the night, being 1 court for 4 trainees.
Assuming that 3 courts will be taken up by CATS for the night
This will allow only 1 court for SOCIAL Badminton. But we do not want overcrowding of Social Players for this ONE court.
So for those who just want to play SOCIAL Badminton, please post here your name.
To Date: Our Wednesday night Social Players will be;
> BadFever
> Fuji
> yschin
> Kim
> DoublesPlease(will be irregular)
Personally, I think that we should only have 6-8 social players for ONE court. But I will let you guys decide for yourselves.
Since I will be involved only with the CATS trainees, I will need someone to take care of the Social Players.
Any volunteers???

Hi LilyC, BadFever, Fuji, Kim, yschin, jo3ker,
Not surprisingly, it is the World No.1(LCW) Vs the World No.2(LD) again in the FINAL for the Mens' Singles Event, Macau Open 2006.
It is happening right now, as I type.
I can say that most CCC members are rooting for LCW.

Hey~ but LCW did well - it was a close match - well done LCW!
I'm glad that he made it into the finals and stays as World NO. 1. ;)
Also... a big congrats to LD! ;)
It would be good if we can watch it on TV though... i'm sure it was another exceptionally well played match between the two.
I had to actually search on the internet last time for the Malaysia Open and only got to see the very last 3 minutes of the final match between LCW and LD - but at least it was a history making moment - when LCW became world NO. 1~ :)

Hi yschin! :)
Yeah... it's either little more extra inspiration or less pressure on him.
I think... he was under a bit of "stress" yesterday.
He's got his own ambition to achieve and being the world no. 1 player - there would be a lot of expectations from his fans / Malaysia citizens as well. Maybe he wasn't psychologically / emotionally adjusted to the right state yesterday. Perhaps he also panicked when Li-Dan won the 1 set coz some points were "given" to LD when he made some errors...
Hopefully with little self-adjustment and more time for him to get used to the "pressure", he will soon be winning again in the next tournament.
~ 3 cheers for the all the good work yesterday though ~ :)
All the best, LCW! ;)

Greetings,
CATS = Coaching And Training Session.
I am happy that the name CATS is coined.
You do not know how strange or funny what CCC Badminton means to different people.

Greetings,
Here are some comments for the session;
Attendance: CATS=9(Regulars=8, Casuals/Drop-Ins=1), SOCIAL=5.
CATS
Chapter: 1 Footwork-Backward
Unfortunately, because it was Enrolment Day, we ran out of time to play any practice games at the end of the session.
Trainees are asked the jot down notes on what was instructed/demonstrated in the lesson/chapter. This will help trainees to mentally revise(at home) the material taught. The jotted notes will become invaluable information in months/years to come.
To help you to remember, here are some key points;
Thumb and index finger for control: Forehand grip
Form straight line from elbow to racket head
What directions the racket head should be facing
How to use the Counting System
Falling backwards to the direction of where you want to go
How to use the Breathing system
Position of racket head: 10, 12, 2, 4 o'clock
Non-racket hand for balancing
Chest facing not towards the net before stroke
Non-racket shoulder higher than racket shoulder before stroke
Weight transfer into the stroke, ie hit the shuttle while moving forward to base position
Footwork can be practiced at home(no need for actual badminton court)
Footwork can be practiced with weight tranfers(no need for actual steps taken)
Parents of trainees are asked to print out our 20-Chapter Program for their children. For those without printers, tell me and I will get a printout for you.
SOCIAL: I want to thank Fuji for taking care of the SOCIAL BADMINTON. It helped me to concentrate on CATS without any worry/concern.
Welcoming first time to Social @Glen Waverley: Eric-L

Hello CATS trainees,
A dear friend sent me this email, warning me of problems teaching/coaching younger children.
I thought they are so funny, so I post them here for you.
Kids are Quick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Maria, go to the map and find America.
MARIA:........Here it is.
TEACHER:...Correct. Now class, who discovered America?
CLASS:........Maria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Greg, how would you spell "crocodile"?
GREG:.........K-R-O-K-O-D-I-A-L.
TEACHER:...No Greg, that's incorrect.
GREG:.........Maybe it's incorrect, but you asked me how "I" spelled it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Ryan, what is the chemical formula for water?
RYAN:.........H I J K L M N O.
TEACHER:...Ryan, what are you talking about?
RYAN:.........Well, yesterday you said it was H to O.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Hunter, name one important thing that we have today that we didn't have 10 years ago.
HUNTER:.....Me !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Adam, why do you always get so dirty?
ADAM:........Well, I guess it's because I'm a lot closer to the ground than you are.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Beth, give me a sentence starting with "I".
BETH:.........I is ......
TEACHER:...No Beth. Always say "I am"...not "I is".
BETH:.........All right. I am the ninth letter of the alphabet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...George Washington not only chopped down his father's cherry tree, but also admitted it. Now Alex, do you know why his father didn't punish him?
ALEX:..........Because George still had the axe in his hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Now, Michael, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?
Michael:......No Miss, I don't have to. My mum is a good cook.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER:...Daniel, your composition on "My Dog" is exactly the same as your brother's composition. Did you copy off of him?
DANIEL:......No teacher, it's the same dog.
Hi trainees@ccc,
I was sent a mail from the owner of our gymnasium(see below);
=== start mail ===
Hello again to you all. Trust that you are enjoying the facility.
The matters in this update:
1. It's come to our attention that a certain gym user group has been going up to the mezzanine and taking the table tennis tables out of their locks and using them. This has resulted in gouging in and blue paint on the walls. The table tennis tables are not to be used by any group. They are for school use only. Thank you to those users who did ask in person if they could be used.
2. We are currently adding a cancellation clause into our gym hire policy. I will forward this to you when the clause has been implemented.
3. Thanks for the careful use of the gym. Security, care of equipment and lighting has been a seldom problem. Your constant attention to these matters is very much appreciated.
Let me know if you have any queries or wish to give feedback.
=== end mail ===
Well, I know it wasn't us. Our players do not even to go upstairs to the mezzanine floor at all.
We are there for BADMINTON ONLY.
I think that we have looked after the Gym in a good or proper manner. And I think we all love the Gym and we will take proper care for it.
To new players @CATS & CCC; Please read POST#429 of this link
Then again, we are not playing. Rachel is.
Hi Chris@CCC! :)
1) Taiwan does have many unique animal species that cannot be found elsewhere in the world and it's just a shame to some becoming extinct. I'm sure they are the having proposals as to what can be done to reduce the risk of extinction or maybe they are already doing something about it. (hopefully it's the second one). I guess the good thing is that people are now more aware of the issue and doing what they can to help. ;)
2) Coaching at the Boroondara Sports Complex? I haven't been there!!! Is it good??? I drove pass it the other day - looked very stylish i must say. hehe... Should be better than the Balwyn Leisure Centre - it's kinda old there. :p
3) I must say, the MS between Rachel Hindley and Huang Chia Chi was really good! Yah~~~ I saw them both with the left hand for balancing and yes.. I was very excited when I picked that up, too. :D (It's a nice photo of Rachel there.) Oh!!! I think I also saw a player (can't remember who... think it was a guy...) did a tumble/spin type of shot - I was so impressed... coz I find it so hard to apply them whenever i'm playing. :(
4) Thanks for the email on diet drinks! I guess it all comes down to: never consume excess amount of a particular thing, because "overdose" that one thing (whether good or bad by itself) can still end up with a bad outcome.
To Chris & everyone@CCC! :)
5) When I was reading the MX on the train this afternoon, look what I saw in the paper:
[Shuttlecocks are the unsung victims of bird flu. The slaughter of millions of Chinese geese to prevent the spread of the disease has left a shortage of the fine feathers used to make the badminton projectiles. Only the thickest, heaviest goose feathers from northern China are used in premium shuttlecokcs and sometimes as few as two feathers a goose make the final cut. Now makers are settling for substandard feathers, and the sport's devotees say it's just not badminton. "It feels almost like duck," complained Dan Chien at California's San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club yesterday.]
Cheers. :)
Perhaps, according to General Zhang Fei, who served the Kingdom of Shu and who lived during the era of the Three Kingdoms of China between 168-221 B.C, the consumption of Lui Char might be better for Badminton:).
To all CATS trainee:
For people who go to the gym, you can use dumbell to train wrist strength. This is further illustrated in the following articles:
http://www.grapplearts.com/Grip-Strength-Training.htm
http://www.ironmind.com/ironcms/export/IronMind/GripTips/griptip32.html
Also people can buy a hand grip for the same purpose. It shouldn't cost more than $5. This is illustrated as followed:
http://www.aiyafitness.com/htm-exercise-equipment/exercise-equipment-hand-wrist-exercise.htm
For anyone who is interested, I can demo the particular excercise upon request if i bring a wrist spring on wednesday to show people. I have been using wrist spring, i believe it adds to a faster reaction time on tighten up the wrist from the relaxed grip.
Anyway, i will let Chris or Bill to explain the rationale behind training for wrist.
Personally, i rather spend more time training calf and forearm instead of wrist basing on the theory that i belief the fundamentals of badminton are
a) footwork (hence training for calf especially the first step of moving back) b) clear (hence training for forearm)
c) service (low service - Lily, that was the chapter i believe you did last week with Chris on sunday, high service - underarm clear, i believe low service focus on the delicacy of the stroke and racket hit rather than power)
C u all wednesday!
To Chris:
I thought chapter 3 on this wednesday nite is gonna be drop shot. Please clarify that.
Hi hkhung,
Yes, I have changed my mind. I have decided to follow the Original 20-Chapter Progarm after talking to you on Sunday.
Because of this Friday's Friendly Match, I think it is better for Chiranthi and the rest to learn the Doubles Service tomorrow.
Hi Chris, thanks. See you tomorrow.
Hi Fuji,
I wonder if you have time to print out the 2 Attachments, namely;
(1)the CATS Program and
(2)the Enrolment Form
to give them to Carol Lee before she attends our CATS next Wednesday.
If she could fill in her details before she attends CATS, it would save us time on Wednesday.
Hi BadFever,
Now that you have been back to playing Badminton for 4 months, you should be able to last at least 2.5 hours or more.
Of course, you are welcomed to CATS. But it will be no more playing but practicing.
Chris would be talking for half an hour before any playing. So technically, it's only 2 hours. If you can play single for a long time on wednesday nite, you should be fine, mate.
Anyway, join us sometime and see how you go!
Hopefully, "coaching" is not confused with "crouching" as in the famous chinese movie - crouching tiger, hidden dragon.
Greetings,
LilyC just asked me why there is "no preview/to be expected message for CATS, Wednesday 23-Aug-2006".
And this is my reply;
“Hi LilyC,
You can sure see the stress I am experiencing at the moment.
Yes, it is because I am not only, having many new enquiries about CATS Wednesday and CCC Friday, but I am also having many discussions for arranging our Friendly Match (for our higher skill level for 4-Sep-2006).
But the worst stress is that I am having computer problems. I have been going to Helmut's house for him to fix my computer lately.”
And our session, CCC Sunday @MSAC will be cancelled this Sunday, 27-Aug-2006, although we were trying, unsuccessfully, to book Monash Uni(Caulfield Campus) for that day.
Marissa, Jill and Tim have booked me for coaching on that day, instead.
Anyway, when things settle down, I will continue to update you guys about our CATS & CCC activities.
Cheers... chris@ccc
Andrewghw, I still prefer my new Proace Platinum 110. Wide body racket suite my playing style better. So, I will be using the Proace for the time being. I can lend you the nano kevlar to play. If you like the nano kevlar very much and would like to own one, I am happy to sell it to you.
Hey! thanks Bad fever. What is your price for the racket? Good to have one of those and can use to it. I'm still use to my realy old Yonex Aerotus but its time for me to try and switch. What I like about your racket is the reflex is very good and surely a very fast racket.
Hi HKhung,
My racquet is 14yrs old. Had it since 1992. But only played on and off thats why is still with me. known to be a fragile racquet and breaks easily. But is a very good racquet. It has a small carck already and could give way anytime thats why I bought the racquet from Badfever and getting use to the new racquet before the Aerotus break.
Cheers!
My racquet is 14yrs old. Had it since 1992.
It must be a very durable racket if you been using it for 14 years. Anyway, see you this wednesday.
By the way, are you interested in joining any competition soon? If so, there is a monash graded (A to C grade) this weekend and Melbourne uni tournament (also graded from A to D grade) the following weekend. I will post the contact if people are interested.
Continuing CATS@Waverley with a 2nd thread (giving correct session time)
Hi everyone@ccc,
Because the session time of this CATS thread is “8:00pm-10:30pm”,
and we have changed it to “7:30pm-10:00pm”,
it is better to continue this thread with a new one.
To go to the new thread, just click on http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35687
This new thread will prevent causing confusion to our new trainees.
So bookmark this new thread, and please use it for your future postings.
Hi Hkhung,
Well, I've stop playing for a while now and to play competitive badminton again, I would need to play constantly for at least 1yr before I will consider any tournament.
I would most likely miss this Wednesday's social as I need to be in Brisbane tomorrow and will only be back after 9pm. So will have to see you guys on Friday.
