Yes, I think Korea is definitely looking forward to great stuff from him in the future. He turns 18 in September! Already he is the national champion in men's doubles. In the Korean nationals, he beat former Olympians and also his present partner, Jung Jae-sung, who entered that tournament briefly re-united with his ex-partner, Lee Jae-jin. He is world junior champion but has also recently won a 3* tournament(German Open) and reached the finals of a 5* event(Chinese Taipei Open). This (http://www.koreabadminton.org/tournament/menu3/people_view.asp?pnum=202267&sp=1) is an information page. If you can't read Korean you at least get his name in Chinese, his age, and another photo. Babelfish is not totally useless for this kind of page, even though some translations are pretty hilarious (ie. junior badminton and Kang Hae-won become it gives U badminton and it is strong the unit, respectively)

This article (http://www.koreabadminton.org/news/menu1/hot_news_view.asp?hnum=10840)gives Lee the epithet Park Joo Bong II. It seems to be attributing to him this quote:

“한국 배드민턴의 미래, 내 손안에 있다!”

which means: "The future of Korean badminton is in my hands!" That seems pretty cocky and it doesn't give any context for this. I think they are being sloppy and putting words in his mouth. Near the end of the article, he says "At this point I don't have enough experience so the Asian Games in Doha in December will be difficult but if I continue to improve at this rate, I think I can win gold at the 2008 Olympics".

I like his style a lot, wonder who his influences and coaches are.Well, in this article (http://www.badmintontimes.com/article/articleRead.jsp?menunum=2&no=2037), he is pictured with Park Joo Bong and he is quoted as saying "I want to become a great player like Coach Park Joo Bong." It also mentions that Park graduated from an agricultural high school in Jeonju. That is in North Jeolla Province. Lee is in his last year at the tech high school in the fairly rural Hwasun in South Jeolla. I wonder whether the two feel a connection in background there. It is often said that people from Jeolla Province suffered a fair bit of discrimination during the 38 years when most of the elite (including 4 presidents in a row) hailed from Gyeongsang province. The tide finally started to turn when a Jeolla native won the presidency in '98.

As for coaches, he must be coached by Malaysia's Tan Kim Her on the national team and at the high school, the two coaches are Gong Hyung-sung(don't know him) and, coincidentally, Jeong Myung-hee, who might be familiar to some of you as Park Joo-bong's mixed doubles partner back in the day. She and Park won 2 world championships and 4 All England titles together.

I read from the star online that he was spotted and brought to the national squad by Tan Kim Her.

Here's a quote from the Star Online August 5 2006:

One of Kim Her's career highlights is that he spotted young Lee Yong-dae during a selection trials in a school at Kwangju.

The 18-year-old now forms a lethal partnerships with 24-year-old Jae Jung-sung. The duo are currently ranked fifth in the world and are seen as among the title contenders at this year's World Championships to be held in Madrid from Sept 18-24.

Here's a quote from the Star Online August 5 2006:
One of Kim Her's career highlights is that he spotted young Lee Yong-dae during a selection trials in a school at Kwangju.I have no reason to doubt that Tan Kim Her was instrumental in getting Lee Yong-dae the partner and the experience he needed to excel internationally, but some of the facts here are a little off. Kim Her started in Korea in 2005 according to this posted article (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34251&highlight=tan+kim) and here is the excerpt:

Kim Her, a former national player, accepted the Korea BA’s offer to train their men’s doubles pairs in January 2005.

However, Lee has been on the national team since 2004 (http://www.koreabadminton.org/tournament/menu3/people_view.asp?pnum=202267)and even won mixed doubles bronze for Korea at the French Open (http://www.koreabadminton.org/tournament/menu3/tournament_view.asp?gnum=3000323)in March, '04. Lee was already firmly on the radar in Korean badminton in 2004 and even earlier. He played in 6 international junior tournaments in 2003 and 2004 including the World Junior championships in '04 (http://www.koreabadminton.org/tournament/menu3/tournament_view.asp?gnum=3000336)where he won a silver and a bronze in men's and mixed doubles respectively.

Lee Yong-dae was recently chosen as the July MVP (http://www.badmintontimes.com/article/articleRead.jsp?menunum=2&no=2265)(outstanding athlete) by one of the sports papers here, Sports Chosun. Those papers are pretty seedy but they are mostly about sports so I guess it's a kind of honour.

Two Badminton Stars, Two Generations

http://www.chinabadminton.com/ball/images/upload/2006/08/24/074724.jpg

“Hi, Mr. Park.”

“You are learning fast. Work harder.”

Lee Yong-dae, 18, of Hwasun Technical High School, is called the “second Park Ju-bong” for his promising career as a badminton player. There are several similarities between him and Park Ju-bong, 42, who used to be a top shuttlecock player and is currently coaching Japan’s national badminton team. First of all, they were born under the same zodiac sign, dragon, with 24 year age difference.

Lee has played badminton for ten years since he first grabbed a racket when he was a 2nd grader in 1996. Park became a player in his 4th grade year. They both received early educations.

Lee won the national championship five times when he was a 5th grader and joined the national team in his 9th grade year. Park was a 10th grader when he was selected to play for the national team.

Lee won the German Open this January to become the second high school student champion after Park, and became a champion in the Thai Open for the second time last month.

Park has special affection for Lee who is tracing the same career path like his shadow. With his Japanese team playing in the Korean Open, which started on August 21 at Jangchung Stadium in Seoul, he did not hesitate to lavish his advice on Lee.

Park spoke highly of him, saying, “Yong-dae is smart, and his play is now on the highest level. Compared to last year, he has more power and will get stronger. I have high expectations.”

He also added his advice, “Do not hurry up for the final smash. Nice play is OK, but it is important to make points without a mistake.”

His advice is that too aggressive play can increase physical pressure and put one in danger when his shot is blocked.

Park won the world championship seven times and a gold medal in the Olympics.

Lee, whose name means “big dragon,” dreams of surpassing the towering career of Park. He appreciates Park’s advice.

Anyone has the personal details of Lee Yong Dae? ThanksHe was born Sept 11, 1988 in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do. He is 180cm tall and weighs 72kg. He started playing badminton in his second year of elementary school so this is his 11th year in the sport. He feels the best part of his game is his defense and his net play but that he lacks power. He hopes to be a schoolteacher or coach after retiring. This info is probably based on a questionnaire or something that the national team gave these kids. It says his first international tournament was the German Junior International in 2004 but the KBA website elsewhere shows him as having competed in the same tournament in 2003. The KBA site says he placed 3rd in men's and mixed doubles in Germany in 2003 and 1st in both those disciplines at the same event in 2004. So one of those was his first international tournament. His name in Chinese is 李龍大.

I actually only saw him once on TV when he played at the Thailand Open.

I saw him in person last week here at the Korea Open and he's getting to be popular among the badminton enthusiasts here. Since he's still young, he has a boyish charm.

In the pictures on the links posted on this thread, I think those were old pictures. His hair is now a little longer with some bangs and his built is more formidable. After the match that night, I saw him drag their ice box (for cold water and energy drinks, I guess) down the stairs to the 'restaurant section' of Jang Chung Gymnasium. So, even when you are the national champion, you're not exempted from doing menial chores, I guess.

I have pictures of him during their play, but I have problems posting them...

Slight error...hehe...Choong/Lee could be the top seed if they win the title today...too bad they lost! So, the Malaysian pair has to settle as the no 3 seed. Fu/Cai will be no 1 followed by Jung/Lee as no 2!

Well, that's the way it is!
You should be happy that some BC'ers are willing to share pictures at all.
Some pictures are from tournaments, others their off-court/daily life pictures, so they will be posted in different threads.

...i remember back in 2002 or 2003, during the U.S. Open, don't remember which round that was, i remember noticing LeeYD and the rest of his teammates sitting & watching as a group. Funny thing is, i happened to sit right in front of his group. Throughout the whole match, i was chanting, clapping and cheering for Tony & Bob, who were playing against Ohtsuka & Masuda for Japan and LeeYD and his gang were cheering for the Japanese pair-LeeYD & his friends were chanting the Japanese pair's sponsor name(aih, forgot the name, maybe Tonami??). At the end of the match, i clapped for the USA pair and out of nowhere i felt this small nudge on my back side and as i turned to see who it was, it was none other than LeeYD and a couple of his friends. I gave them a very quick stare and and he nudged me again. I guess i might've annoyed them with my cheering..haha:p :D :) Anyways, that was one of my experience & LeeYD sure still has the same youthful face.
I believe he came and played in 2 U.S. Opens.

Translating from: http://www.koreabadminton.org/news/m...asp?hnum=11002 (http://www.koreabadminton.org/news/m...asp?hnum=11002) with my own comments in parantheses.

(I guess this article is based on the interview with him in May or early June because he has already got over his finger injury and participated in the Summer National Tournment just finished yesterday. JJS/LYD won the title in MD!)

The title reads - 龍大不敗 (YD Never Defeated) will be continued.
(In Korea, we love to use this term. We think he is the next-generation leader in badminton korea.)

He had been injured with his little finger during training last April which followed the ankle injury in January. In fact, he has been threatened by the tortures on his waist side caused by continued participating in numerous tournaments for all his shcool periods. So, he could enjoy the recovery times having enough rest and relax. He said, "this is the longest resting period since I had started this sports."

But his mind was not easy as his body because he could not take part in the Spring National Tournament which makes his team(Samsung Electro-Mechanics) ranked 3rd. "Everytime my coach told me how my recovery went well, I felt sorry."

In his final match from high-school years, he got three gold medals in Asia Junior Badminton Championships in July followed by getting three gold medals also from the World Junior Badminton Championships in November which was a new record in the badminton history of Korea. He recalled, "it was the last tournament participating as a junior representative and I was stressed a lot by people's anticipation. But I was really delighted and it was my glory for I could get three gold medals."

After graduating high-school, he joined Samsung E-M. "I am so happy cause I can play in S.E-M team with many good players." In 2007 Yonex Korea Open, he and JJS got 1st rank in MD which showed his successful future in senior stage. JJS is his senior and best player in the world so LYD plays with feeling he supports him as a good partner.

Post-Park Joo Bong

YD got his racket first when he was second-year grade in elementary school(in Korea, it is about 8 year-old). The reason he got the racket was for diet! In his 2nd-year grade he was getting fat, which led him to search for a good sports to lose his weight. He came to across badminton team in his school and started it. Finally he lost his weight but then he was fallen in love with the sports. He loved to play all around the court holding the racket. He began to particpate in the tournaments and won matches one by one with prizes he was more favorable to badminton. At last, badminton became his life and way to go. He says, "badminton is a turning point in my life."

Todays, YD is a star in the world of badminton korea. He was asked if he liked to appear on the air. But he said, "I've participated in a Sports Channel. But I couldn't say any word. Too hard for me. It's much better to play hard."

People call him 'Post-Park Joo Bong'. He deseves this honor when you see his net play as well as sharp drives sending the birdy into the empty places in the court. "Once I feel I can manage a game from the starting point, I always have confidence not to lose to any players." When he heard that he is a successor of Park Joo Bong, "I feel burdened when I hear that from people. It is highly honored to be compared with the Teacher Park Joo Bong. I am concerned if I could do well. But it still gives me more motivation for my play.

Doha Asian Games will be good motives

"I am an athlete. But I am not playing which makes me feel down. But badminton is not sports only for a single year. So I think this is a process to build my shape for more important games and moments in the future."

When he got stresses from playing, he tries to divert his focus into another area like computer games. "I think too much. they say you are hardened by your useless many thoughts," he smiled. "When playing on the court, even though I have to concentrate on my own game, I usually find myself thinking
the next games or the courts playing around next to mine. Therefore, I guarantee my win for any games if there's only one court in the gym. But if there are three to four courts, I can hardly get my concentration where sometimes I can't help losing the game. So I am trying to learn to be calm with good concentration."

In the semi-final of Doha Asian Games in Mens's Team matches, he was too strained so that he could not move as he wanted. "At that time, I was overstrained. I did nothing. So I felt this is a real game, a real big game!"
Anyway, the AGs were good experiences for him to be precious assets for growing more.

-----

That's it. Enjoy fellas!

Koo/Tan are 1:2 against the other Korean pair, Lee/Hwang. BWF Head-to-head is missing the match in the Doha team event where Lee/Hwang first beat Koo/Tan.

JJS/LYD did really well to make it to the finals of the WC. Especially trashing the Jap pair in the semis who trashed THB/KKK in the quarters! Too bad they didn't win but it was really close, right?

I watched LYD playing in the recent WC. He was fast & sharp in attacking when playing against JPN pair in the SF but made too many unforced errors against INA pair in the final. Although he lost in the MD final to INA pair, he will still be the one to watch in Beijing Olympic and years to come.

hwang jung woon of course.. or lee jae jin Unlikely. Hwang Jung-woon is a singles player. Jung Jae-sung won't be retiring any time soon. Remember, he is a doubles specialist who doesn't play mixed. Just to give you an idea of their relative ages, Jung turned 25 on Saturday. Lee Jae-jin turns 25 in January and Hwang Ji-man just turned 23. Han Sang-hoon turns 23 in October.

Korea is now slowly having 2 solid men's doubles pairs, similar to the times of the legendary Ha Tae Kwon/Kim Dong Moon, Lee Dong Soo/Yoo Yong Sung.

In fact, Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae and Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man are evenly matched. Lee/Hwang beat Jung/Lee in quite a couple of events this year; when they won the SCG Thailand Open and German Open  Jung/Lee themselves won the Korea Super Series and a silver-medallist in the World Championships.

Not to mention, Korea does have a solid back up pair in Han Sang Hoon/Cho Gun Woo (World Junior champion with Lee Yong Dae).

Korea's haul of 3 MD titles this year is on par with China (Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun winning 3 titles) and 2 titles behind MAS (Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong winning 4 titles and Chan Chong Ming/Hoon Thien How winning 1 title). In contrast, INA only wins 1 title in the World Championships

His partner was Park Sung-hwan. They beat the likes of Guo Zhendong, Ong Soon Hock, Koo Kien Keat, and Tan Bin Shen on their way to the win in 2002. Han and Cho won the Osaka Challenge, reached the semi-finals of the Philippine Open, and lost in the 2nd round to Jung/Lee in the Thailand Open.

In addition, there's also another Junior player Yoo Yeon Seong, who is currently paired with Kwon Yi Go in the Indonesia Challenge 2007. Han Sang Hoon/Yoo Yeon Seong are among of the pair that has beaten the current World Champion Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan in R16 of the All England this year. Look out for this pair

HTK is LYD mentor.. And KDM is his coach now ......Kim Dong Moon isn't even in the country. He is in Canada. Perhaps you are thinking of Kim Moon-soo, gold medallist from '92, not '04. He coaches Lee at Samsung and coached him on the junior national team.

Ha Tae-kwun is a player for the Samsung and team coaches on the national team, as does Lee Dong-soo. It goes without saying that Lee has many mentors available.
