Hi all,
I hear Candra Wijaya will be at this year's summer camp at ClearTwo starting at the end of this month. Any of you lucky ones joining the camps?
Wish I could be there to at least see some of the action. Too bad I will be out of town while he is here :crying:

Greetings,
I hope all is well! This year Northville Parks and Rec is hosting another
tournament with a special event included... Our goal for the weekend of
June 2nd through the 4th is to promote this game that we all love which is
BADMINTON of course. A lot of you know that this sport is also like family,
many of you may agree that the community of badminton players is like 2nd or
3rd family and to some the only family. We not only want to promote this
game but also during the event just enjoy one another's company, like a
family reunion or something you know? I know am starting to sound NUTS but
I think you all get what I am saying.
This year our special event is called "The World Class Experience" and I am
not going to share each person's bio on who's participating cause it's not
about their fame or what they've accomplished it's about giving everybody a
chance to see this game played at a higher level and most of all a chance
for anybody to learn how to play this game at that high level. The players
who are participating is Kevin Han, Halim Haryanto, Eric Go, Raju Rai, Kathy
Zimmerman, Erin Hois, Katarina Prax, Camilla Stroem and as well as other
midwest athletes like Matt Wrobel and other midwest players we're inviting
that can play that game at high level... Again it's not about them
personally... these are friends and individuals who share only one passion
which is to help bring awareness to this game. I understand they are not
super world champions or hardcore world legends but these are players who
love to coach, who love to help make this game grow and most of all these
are players who have amazing character as well as everyone else who plays
this sport. If we wanted Lin Dan or Peter Gade we would had broke our back
to get them to come out but I believe that each of these individuals can
help bring this experience alive and help us bring more awareness to this
game.
The world class experience will consist of the following... Team
tournament...
Team U.S. International (Imported players)
Kevin Han
Halim Haryanto
Katarina Prax
Camilla Stroem
Coach: Martin Barnes
Team: USA (Born in the U.S.)
Raju Rai
Eric Go
Erin Hois
Kathy Zimmerman
Coach: Tom Charmichael
as well as Pro's vs Joes which will consist of Midwest and Mid-Atlantic
players vs the Pro's.
The schedule of this event is June 3rd from 12:30-4
12:30 to 1:00 - Skills contest (fastest smash, trickiest shots, highest jump
smash, etc.)
1:00 to 1:30 Pro's vs Joes
1:30 to 4:00- Team match up, 21 points, split at 11.
Matches:
MX- Haryanto&Prax vs Go&Zimmerman
WS-Stroem vs Hois
MS- Han vs Rai
WD- Stroem&Prax vs Hois&Zimmerman
MD- Han&Haryanto vs Rai&Go
Team that wins the most matches win. This event is FREE... also Truth Spa
and Salon are setting up a couple message tables as well and they are FREE!
FRESS BODY MESSAGE, even for spectators and players... it's 15 minute per a
person. When was the last time you actually had a message for beautiful
lady, and um, yeah... guy too? Also they're giving away free gifts as well.
Not that this tournament is beauty parlor or anything but it's the free
message and free beauty tips that count right? hahaha... So that's a
perk...
Another huge perk is that everybody will get a chance to play with these
pro's... Ever dreamed of playing doubles against or with 2001 world champion
Halim Haryanto? or even get coaching tips from Kevin Han or Halim? Ladies
and Gents... these players are here for you... It is a chance to get
personal, and ask them any questions and get tips on how to build your
skills and it's a chance for you to play against them and brag to everybody
that you beat a world champion... Take advantage of this huge offer....
All this is FREE! No catch or anything, just thank them for coming out.
Getting back to the tournament... If you havent signed up, it's cool... As
long as you sign up before next Wednesday or Thursday, you're totally fine.
NO extra fee... If you need a doubles partner or mix parter, we will do our
very best to get you one. If you're worried you'r out of shape or a bigginer
or something, DON'T! This tourmament is all level, beginner/out of shape
and up. We need you all to be apart of this and help us continue to build
up this game.
If there is anyway we can help by asking any questions or anything, please
email us. This tournament planning team consist of Lilly Feng, Richard Teo,
Joe Barabario and myself. Lilly, Richard, and Joe and I are totally
committed to help you and help make this game grow. We are here to help. All
of them have been working hard to try to bring this world class badminton
experience LIVE in front of you and also an opportunity to ask questions,
get to know these players and become a better player both on and off the
court. If you have any ideas please let us know, we would love to hear them!
Help us, help grow this game. We need you!
Thank you for your time!
Dan

DanWho is this Dan guy who doesn't consider Halim's world championship a super achievement? He and Tony beat the previous world champions, Kim Dong-moon and Ha Tae-kwun in the finals, including 15-0 in the first game! You can't even say he's over the hill considering that he's won 2 tournaments last year.

Candra is here now! :D
At the end of the session today, we did a 4 vs 1 demo against Candra (he played defense)...
... and of course, he won pretty much every single rally.
If you want to see him in action, drop by ClearTwo between 12:00 - 2:00, and 3:00 - 6:00 on weekdays until the 10th :)

So I managed to drop by and catch the legendary Chandra Wijaya in the 3 vs 1 demo with towbsss et al.
Wow, I've seen the back person smash at full force before, and I've always thought that it was at devastating speed. However, when Chandra's the guy on the other side, NO PROBLEM at all! Very unreal to see a true international professional vs Canadian provincials, let alone 3 of them against Chandra.
Holy moly!

Nope. C2 is a private enterprise operated by Darryl Yung (an Ex-Canadian National player). The Canadian National training centre is in Calgary.
I think I will drop by today with my camera just to watch.

yes he is. Most pros doing camps won't even let parents of paid students take video or photos during training. The photo taking restriction on wood22chuck was by C2. I'm sure candra wouldn't mind at all.

So let me understand this: is this so "the secret" doesn't leak out? Whatever "the secret" is?
-dave
i can understand the restriction for videotaping. if every student videotapes
their badminton classes and passes the video among friends, then friends may decide to watch the video instead of enrolling in the classes.
but photo-taking?? to me seeing photos of a facility is a good and positive PR for the facility involved. and frankly, what kind of "secret" can be leaked by a photo anyway. strange policy indeed.

With the picture/video taping, it's just that ClearTwo probably feels that they had to pay for/pull a lot of strings to get Candra over here and people who simply come in and shoot pictures or photos, especially those who may not even play at ClearTwo... yeah, I hope you understand...
It's not like they're banning you from watching or anything... but yeah, one of the issues would be trying to get a picture with Candra... when he's supposed to be coaching, cuz I've seen that happen.
I will try to get more photos/videos, but they will be uploaded after the camp is over (10th) :)

...it's just that ClearTwo probably feels that they had to pay for/pull a lot of strings to get Candra over here and people who simply come in and shoot pictures or photos, especially those who may not even play at ClearTwo...
towbsss, I don’t know whether as one of their coaches you’re speaking for C2’s management on this forum, but unfortunately this is a very shortsighted and narrow-minded statement/opinion. The badminton community is small and mobile. Many of you maintain memberships at VRC but train at C2. I myself play mostly at VRC, but this doesn’t preclude me from dropping in at, taking lessons at, or referring people to other facilities, including C2.
The number of people who are knowledgeable and passionate enough to come out to see an international player is relatively small. Inviting the public to come watch (post #18), but then making an issue of picture taking, regardless if they play at C2 or not, is contradictory. Interested fans should respect the coaching hours, but I don’t see what is the problem with taking pictures before or after lessons, so long as Candra himself is willing to oblige.
Furthermore, to bring up the issue of cost, C2 is treading thinly. More than one parent has expressed frustration with the high cost of the summer camp and the lack of coaching that Candra seems to be actually doing. There is a perception that C2’s coaching staff has been the main beneficiaries.
Having seen several international caliber players come through the area lately, though not actually coach here for various reasons, I am pleased to see Vancouver finally able to land someone of Candra’s stature. Credit to C2 for being a pioneer in the market. But, on the business side, C2 has dropped the ball on the PR potential of this visit. Hopefully, with 1 week left in the summer camp, C2 will take the opportunity to make things right.

Okay, I'm sorry for the contradiction cuz I thought it was okay for people to come see Candra, but then I found out that ClearTwo management didn't really want the public to come in... so, that's why I voiced the new opinion. I was told it was okay to watch, but no photos/videos. I actually think it's nice to see some people take the time to come out

I'm sorry you/they feel that way. I honestly think the cost of this summer camp extremely reasonable. $475 for 9 days (5 hours per day) of training with 2 international players, as well as the regular C2 coaching staff is fair. As with Candra's supposed lack of coaching, sometimes it's up to the athletes to speak to him. Think of a professor who offers office hours for his lecture. You have to take the first step to say something, whether it be a question about the lecture, or simply just saying hi. From what I can see, Candra is somewhat quiet, but if you get to know him, he's funny and he is eager to teach. You just gotta take the first step and ask him.

Haha, PR? This was almost an invite only camp at ClearTwo. I don't think it was ever intended for the public to know that Candra was coming to ClearTwo, hence maybe then, you'll understand why they don't want photos/videos. It's just some of us were a little too excited and leaked a little too much info *whoops* :D Though I am considered staff, I (hopefully) obviously function on my own, and I guess it would be my mistake for... advertising? So sorry to disappoint some of you, but I'll try to get some footage?

I actually don't know. It's not really a demo, it's just that he uses a couple of the students from the camp for a little practice cuz he needs to play a tournament the week after the summer camp. However, there's a really good chance he will be doing at least something...
I will try to arrange something for at least one of those days, but no guarantees (sorry! >__<). However, PLEASE respect the C2 policy of no pictures/videos!

The difference between C2 and a national training centre is that C2 is, at the end of the day, a business. What is C2's target market? By all means, lock the doors during training hours, but do share with the "mere public" after the session is over. What is C2's vision for promoting and developing the game? It is disappointing to see that this is how C2 intends to run a business.

It is disappointing to see that this is how C2 intends to run a business.
I'm sorry that you feel a badminton center thinks of its athletes first

You just gotta take the first step and ask him.
Absolutely, if I were his student, I would ask him technical questions that had been trouble me before and during my training with him. To use an analogy, he would be like a Shaolin martial-art grandmaster traveled all the way from China to Richmond, and I would take the opportunity to ask him wushu questions that had been bugging me.
But hey, at least you can come watch... it's not so bad :)
Seriously, it is a great experience to watch one of the best badminton players in actions.
I will try to arrange something for at least one of those days, but no guarantees (sorry! >__<). However, PLEASE respect the C2 policy of no pictures/videos!
No problem! :D

hopefully it will not be a secret visit and interested "public" will be allowed to take pictures with grandmaster ;):D

Please quote my entire paragraph and what kind of comment I was answering to. It has nothing to do with taking pictures, isn't it? ;) :D

Toby, remember when the World Junior Championships were in town...do you think that, without Coach Ming pulling some strings, the Chinese team would've visited VRC and you would've had the occasion to play in those exhibition matches? The point is that when there's such an opportunity to benefit the badminton community, it becomes more than just about who's paying, who's pulling strings, who's playing where...it's about the spirit of promoting and developing the game.
I have nothing more to say. Peace out.

That's if the 'Grandmaster' can even speak English to you. Candra Wijaya's English is pretty limited, with Darryl doing almost all of the teaching to the summer camp group. You might as well ask Darryl about technical questions.
If C2 is so protective of Candra when he's not coaching, you won't be able to ask him questions anyways. IMO, asking him technical questions is worse than taking pictures with him since you're threading on C2's business directly (which is to instruct). C2 staff might not take kindly when you ask him technical questions while you're not a student there. Students are paying $400 each to get him to come out here to 'instruct'. So obviously some people do have more entitlement to him than others. Whether they take advantage of his presence is another different matter.

Cappy75, I am saying that a student of Candra should ask him technical questions. See the quote below, I was commenting to what Towbsss was saying about a student there should ask him questions. Yes, I know his English is limited. If I were a student there, I would take into the account that he is from Indonesian and his English is limited so I would try to add body language/badminton actions to help pass my message/question to him. It is not easy but "if I were a student there," then I would try my best.
"$475 for 9 days (5 hours per day) of training with 2 international players, as well as the regular C2 coaching staff is fair. As with Candra's supposed lack of coaching, sometimes it's up to the athletes to speak to him." -- Towbsss
Now, you know that I didn't say anything about a non-student can ask him questions.
It is just me. As an outsider, I will be quite happy to "watch and learn" from Candra in actions at the ClearTwo.
Glad to read and know that you guys had a great time with Candra. :) He is simply the best. One of the most humble player i've known in the pro circuit.

I understand what you mean, but right now the intention is for him to coach a summer camp and that's that. The extra stuff at the end is a bonus.
On the bright side, I think C2 has a big exhibition in the works, but I have no idea when... don't ask! I don't know!
(Edit: Not anytime sooooooon)
AND, I think me and my bro are gonna play Ronne/Candra for drinks after training tomorrow :)

Fair enough, but it seems that not many students actually had technical questions for the 'Grandmaster'. It does shows you how much guidance he could give to the participants onsite. Not sure if it's because of his limited English capacity or the students' shyness. If Thomas Stavngaard is doing 95% of the teaching, then Candra is obviously underemployed. I was told that Candra was walking around most of the time observing and doing not much else beside providing sparring to C2's top guns. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that C2 could at least be more lenient with the public seeking Candra after-session.

Well maybe someone have to instruct Candra what to do.. if he is just standing there and doing nothing much.. there might be a reason. He might not know what to do. And since His english is limited.. no one dared to ask him directly?

Today's short conversation scene between Chandra (Indonesia) and Thomas (Denmark). :)
Setting: A potluck at the ClearTwo centre, where the parents, the Canadian and Denmark players, and the coaches celebrated the conclusion of the Summer Camp. A TV was set up to show last year's Korean Open and a couch and a coffee table were placed in front of the TV. Korean Open (3): Chandra/Sigit vs Ericksen/Lundgaard.
Time: 645pm.
Chandra and Thomas were watching game 2. (Please remember that their Englsih are not that good so I fill up the gap of the conversation).
Chandra: Damn. It was very close. 15-13 lima-belas, tiga-belas. (the game 3).
Thomas: You lost? (Thomas with accented English. Apparently, he didn't know the result).
Chandra: Yes.
They continued to watch it for a bit.
Thomas: You looked "dumb", now you look "old." :D
Chandra: :( (grabbed his paper plate and pretended he wanted to throw it at Thomas. Then, he put it back onto the table.) then gave a quiet smile.
Then they continued to watch it for a bit.
Darryl in the background taking pictures at the potluck scene and the two world-class players.
* I got a picture with Thomas too! * :D

I apologize for the inaccuracy. Yours make much more sense. Thank you for the correction. I did miss some of what they said because there were background noise. So the part "dumb" was actually "young." :o
Earlier before they sat together to watch the TV, I suspected that it was last year's Korea Open. Chandra was happen to be nearby so I asked him whether it was from the last year's competition, and he said yes. I did check it again. The game is indeed from the 2005 Korea Open, which Chandra/Sigit lost to the Denmark pair 15-7, 13-15, 13-15.
SmashingBird, did Chandra also said that the Chinese opponents were very fast?

You guys r so lucky to have so many Int'l World-Ranked players at your club! I really look forward to the demonstration game here at Mandarin Club in Toronto featuring Gong Runia, Cao Chen and coach Zhang Shao Chen this Saturday. I'll keep you guy update with the details too! Lucky guy. Man, I only played badminton for a few years so I didn't start to pay attention to the international game until recently. The 2004 World Junior Championship in Richmond, Canada, was the first international game that I watched. It was incredible. That's why I want to become a better player.

Thanks! Please give us the update. I learnt how to pick up a birdie with my racquet by watching Gong Ruina's game (dvd). The one she did it was so clear that I had no problem copying it. I wish I could be there to watch her demo.
