The main draw will start tomorrow morning with matches in MS (2 rounds), WS, and XD. A total of 80 matches will be played.

Here's some of the interesting matches (predicted winners in bold as usual):

MS ROUND 1/64
Andrew Smith vs Shoji Sato -- the English player is seeded 9/16, but, I think the Jap will win.

Marcus Jansson vs Alamsyah Yunus -- a tricky test for the young Indonesian player. Can he win?

Boonsak Ponsana vs Kenn Lim -- should be a breeze for the home favorite, but Chen Hong should await him tomorrow night.

Mohd Roslin Hashim vs Park Sung Hwan -- Roslin lost to Kendrick last week and he faces another tough first-round opponent. I don't think he can win.

Sho Sasaki vs Peter Gade -- a tricky test also for the Danes (who is in a honeymoon in Thailand), but he should manage.

Mohd Arif Abdul Latif vs Hong Seung -- with Lin Dan's withdrawal, the young and promising Arif should win.

WS ROUND 1/32
Pia Zebadiah vs Eriko Hirose -- tough first draw for Pia. It will be a huge upset if she manages to win!

Lee Hyun Jin vs Judith Meulendijks -- tricky draw for the newly crowned Macau Open champion, but, she should win.

Adrianti Firdasari vs Yu Hirayama -- again, a tough first draw for the Indonesian girl. I hope she advances.

Salakjit Ponsana vs Lu Lan -- the Chinese should win.

Kanako Yonekura vs Yao Jie -- yet another tough match for both players. Yao to win.

XD ROUND 1/32
Eric Go/Mona Santoso vs Devin Lahardi/Yunita Tetty -- the newly formed Indo pair should win their first match.

Lingga/Yulianti vs Hsieh Yu-Hsing/Yang Chia-Tseng -- I believe this is the young Indonesian pair's second World Grand Prix tournaments, after the Indonesia Open this year. They came back from Thailand with a victory in the Satelitte event few months ago. I think they will win their first match.

Keita Masuda/Tomomi Matsuda vs Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl -- the Danes won the Macau Open few days ago after an impressive victory over Zhang Jun/Gao Ling. They should reach at least the semi-final to have yet another rendevous with the Chinese pair.

I'm quite curious about the Shon Seung Mo vs. Sony Dwi Kuncuro match. Probably the best first round match!

I don't think Sony is playing. SSM is playing Chan Kwong Beng (Malaysia) in the first round.
I'm intrigued by HRH Princess (of Thailand ?) in the mixed doubles playing against Lee Jae Jin and Lee Hyo Jung !

Yes the princess of Thailand is playing in Mixed Doubles. But she is not a threat. Her opponent should win with a breeze.

what does it mean when a player is seeded 9/16? usually it's 1st seed, 2nd seed.....

what does it mean when a player is seeded 9/16? usually it's 1st seed, 2nd seed.....

MS usually has up to 16 seeded players (based on rankings). If he's seeded 9/16, then his ranking (based on the players involved in the tourney) is 9 to 16.

Some notable early results:
Andrew Smith bt Shoji Sato 21-14, 21-15 -- this guy has improved a lot...and could pose some threat in the future. He should win again tonight and face either Chen Yu or LCW tomorrow.

Marcus Jansson lost to Alamsyah Yunus 11-21, 12-21 -- a good result for the young and inexperienced Indonesian player. He will face Lee Hyun Il later at night.

Hsieh Yu-Hsing lost to Chen Hong -- 21-16, 17-21, 13-21 -- another struggle by Chen Hong. Jeffer could push him yet again tonight.

Jeffer Rosobin, Boonsak Ponsana, Vountus Indra Mawan (the young Malaysian player) and Chen Jin also advance (after his opponent withdrew). I made a mistake in my earlier post. Boonsak will face another young Malaysian player (Mohd Nazri Latifi) tonight and he should advance to Round 1/16 to face Lee Hyun Il tomorrow. Vountus also has a winnable tie against Jung Hoon Min.

what does it mean when a player is seeded 9/16? usually it's 1st seed, 2nd seed.....

It means he is seeded 9th to 16th. There will be eight players in total who will be seeded 9/16. This is instead of directly seeding 9th, 10th, 11th etc.

Only in Malaysia perhaps?

Sigh...not even a Melaka Open title will raise KBH's spirit. He lost tamely yet again 19-21, 11-21 in 30 mins to John Moody. Other young Malaysian players like Beryno Wong, Mohd Shafiq Jamaluddin, and Wee Chung Pei can beat their first round opponents without any problems.

KBH has to seriously think about his future....a break from badminton will be good for him.

John Moody give KBH bad vibes. At least Msia is sending more of their younger players now. I don't understand this KBH. Always lose to unknown players. Not that the unknown players are not good. Just that.. its KBH.

Really beginning to think tat he cant play outside Malaysia la.....
Some said tat he is another LCW in making, sorry i cant see tat... his weak mental is the problem he could'nt overcome himself.... LCW at his age had redi beaten a string of top players in the world, while for KBH sadly to say, its the opposite way.......

Well, the BAM has tried everything with KBH. The switched him over to Li Mao but it's his mental state that is most fragile. He still has that TC mental block which, if he does not overcome, will end his career in a hurry. Poor chap, I'm sure he's trying his hardest but even if the body is willing, his mind isn't :(

Maybe it is more of his attitude...
He was probably over confident with his recent victory in Melacca open..
Overlooked unknown players... however... John Moody is not a bad player... he is NZ ace.... seen him play and has won quite a number of Australasia titles

Some more results in the MS Round 1/16 (4 more still yet to be completed)
Mohd Roslin Hashim lost to Park Sung Hwan 17-21, 21-14, 21-14 (the longest match so far...and MATCH OF THE ROUND). Park will meet his compatriot...Hwang Jung Woon later tonight.

Sho Sasaki lost to Peter Gade 8-21, 13-21 -- easy win for Peter. Peter will face the Thai no 2 player, Poompat Sapkulchananart tonight...a tricky tie for him yet again.

Krishnan Yogendran bt Chetan Anand 23-21, 21-11 -- a good victory for the non-BAM player. Somehow, these non-BAM players perform better than KBH in recent months. The Malaysian will play Yousuke Nakanishi tonight...a winnable tie for him.

Meanwhile, both Hafiz and Shon Sheug Mo also won the first round matches and will meet each other tonight. Hafiz should win that one...

KBH is still raw and when he is losing, he will throw it all away. He needs a psychologist to help him. Maybe Li Mao and other people will help him. I wish I can be his motivator, he will get his ears burn if he sees me.:D

He is too far away from comparison with LCW. LCW only lose to one and only one international player most of the time, in most tournament. :crying: KBH lost in first round (in MO) and for the second time again, first round in this tournament when playing non-Malaysian players. Some picks from tonight's matches:

MS ROUND 1/32
Lee Chong Wei vs Chen Yu (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- if LCW is in his top form, he will win...but...does he have the motivation to go far in this tournament, esp after Lin Dan's withdrawal? Nevertheless, I still pick LCW to win!

Lee Hyun Il vs Alamsyah Yunus -- huge match for the young Indonesian player. It will be a major upset if he can win tonight.

Boonsak Ponsana vs Mohd Nazree Latifi -- expected to be another breeze for the home favorite.

Chen Hong vs Jeffer Rosobin -- the Chinese has struggled in the past few tournaments. Jeffer will definitely push him to the distance! Chen to win in 3 sets (again)!

Jang Young Soo vs Chen Jin -- another breeze for Chen Jin.

Poompat Sapkulchananart vs Peter Gade -- the Thai no 2 player has the potential to sneak a surprise or two...but the Danes should be too powerful for him!

Shon Seung Mo vs Mohd Hafiz Hashim -- Hafiz to prevail!

James Chua vs Eric Pang -- the Sarawakian beat Nguyen Tien Minh earlier in the afternoon, but the Netherland player should win.

Some results from the WS ROUND 1/32 (a few more matches have yet to be finished):
Ai Goto bt Julia Wong Pei Xian 21-18, 7-21, 21-15 -- no luck for young Julia...losing in 3 sets. The Japanese player will meet Soratja Chansrisukot tomorrow (quite possibly the only home player left in the main draw by end of today).

Pia Zebadiah lost to Eriko Hirose 21-19, 14-21, 12-21 -- a good match for Pia...the most important thing is the experience gained in pushing the relatively more superior Jap to 3 sets. Good one! Meanwhile, Eriko will meet Judith Meulendijks tomorrow.

Adrianti Firdasari bt Yu Hirayama 21-10, 21-16 -- a good result for Firda...can she beat Kaori Mori tomorrow?

Zhu Lin bt Monthila Meemek 21-9, 21-12 -- no luck for the local player...

Pai Min-Jie bt Lydia Cheah Li Ya 28-30, 21-14, 21-17 -- a marathon match for both players (65 mins) and the Chinese Taipei player won the right to face Zhu Lin tomorrow.

Salakjit Ponsana lost to Lu Lan 15-21, 10-21 -- another bad draw for the Thai...going down to the young Chinese player in 2 quick sets.

Kanako Yonekura lost to Yao Jie 19-21, 8-21 -- Yao survived a tricky tie and faces another tough match against Lu Lan tomorrow.

Wong Mew Choo bt Anu Nieminen 17-21, 21-12, 21-19 -- phew...a close shave for Wong. She will not have an easy time tomorrow against Xie Xingfang.

In the XD, it was another disappointing result for Devin Lahardi/Yunita Tetty, losing to Eric Go/Mona Santoso in 2 straight sets 12-21, 11-21. This pair has a bleak future...as compared to other pairs like Mohd Rizal/Greysia Polii or Anggun Nugroho/Vita Marissa.

He has got good touches but is mentally weak (LCW was like this if you guys can remember, always losing till we questioned his mental strength -- now what do we hear of him : he is good; he can beat LD from now on; he will be next world champion).

I am dissapointed, but I'm sure Kuan is even more dissapointed than his fans do....

This got to be expected somehow. Starting from the Malaysian Open, LCW have been playing in a lot of tournaments and reaching the finals, that's an awful lot of games. No player can maintain solid performance for that long, they will definitely slip sometime and crashes out. LCW is definitely good, but he's also human. Actually, I am happy that LCW crashed out early. All players will slip and its better to slip when it doesn't hurt too much. Furthermore, they don't slip often, so its better to happen early and quickly move on as that also mean they will be less likely to slip again in the near future. :D

I am impressed that one young single player is in last 16. I hope he will grow up more in future. YKB and JC also advance to last 16 and will now meet each other for a place in QF, probably against MHH. I hope YKB to win because I hope he will make it to Asian Games. If KBH's poor performance continues, we should drop him from Doha and send LCW, MHH, YKB and probably one young single for exposure. Win or lose doesn't matter for me in the AG and since we are difficult to get a point through 3rd MS, why not bring some young player for exposure?

Badminton-Top seed Chong Wei out of Thai Open
Thursday July 27, 2:22 AM
BANGKOK, July 26 (Reuters) - Top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia made a surprise early exit from the Thailand Open on Wednesday after losing to China's Chen Yu 21-19 14-21 21-19 in the men's singles.
Chong Wei, the world number one, launched a spirited fightback late in the match, but 27th-ranked Chen held on to take victory and advance to the third round.

Chen varied his game from powerful returns to delicate drop shots, which sent Chong Wei to the floor several times.

After losing the opening game, a visibly frustrated Chong Wei found his way back into the match, coming from behind to take the second game by seven points.

The Malaysian trailed in the third and final game but clawed his way back into the 59-minute contest, saving three match points to bring the game to 20-19, but Chen continued to attack, forcing an error to deny the Asian champion victory.

Second seed Peter Gade of Denmark had a comfortable win over Thailand's Poompat Sapkulchananart, wrapping up the second round match 21-7 21-13 in 35 minutes.

The four-time European champion frustrated Poompat by drawing him to the net with light flicks before smashing the shuttlecock high into the back of the court and forcing the Thai onto his backhand.

"Having the world number one go out makes no difference to me," Gade told Reuters. "I'm happy with my performance so far. I didn't give anything away today and it was a comfortable win for me."

China looked set to dominate the tournament after the opening day, with all of their players through to the next stage.

Third seed Chen Hong came from behind to beat Rosobin Jeffer of Indonesia 19-21 21-13 21-17 while fifth-seeded Bao Chunlai saw off Malaysia's Wong Beryno 21-8 21-14 in the second round.

Sixth seed Chen Jin of China defeated South Korean Jang Young Soo 21-14 21-17 to progress to the next round.

China's mixed doubles pairing Zhang Jun and Gao Ling scored a first round victory over Malaysia's Tan Bin Shen and Ooi Yu Hang 21-11 21-10 in just 20 minutes, while in the women's singles first round, top seed Xie Xingfang of China progressed with a 20-minute 21-7 21-10 victory over Rachel Van Cutsen of the Netherlands.

Team mate Zhu Lin beat Thai Monthila Meemek 21-9 21-12 while compatriot Lu Lan defeated Thailand's Salakjit Ponsana 21-15 21-10 to book her place in the second round.
