badMania 07-28-2006, 08:32 AM MEN'S SINGLES
Chen Yu vs Chen Hong -- a battle of the Chens...Chen Hong to win.
Chen Jin vs Mohd Hafiz Hashim (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- can Hafiz break his jinx and won a match against Chen Jin? I don't think so....Chen Jin to win!
MEN'S DOUBLES
Fang Chieh-Min/Lee Sheng-Mu vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man -- the unknown Chinese Taipei pair has impressed me by beating Hoon/Tan today. However, their luck should run out by tomorrow. The Korean pair should win the match!
Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae vs Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- it could be an all-Korean Final on Sunday and the increasingly dangerous pair of Jung/Lee should have an edge over the veteran Malaysian pair of Choong/Lee.
WOMEN'S SINGLES
Eriko Hirose vs Zhu Lin (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- can the Jap beat the relatively inconsistent young Chinese player? I certainly hope so!
Yao Jie vs Hwang Hye Youn -- the Korean created an upset by beating the second seed Xie Xingfang today. However, I think Yao Jie will win.
WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Lena Frier-Kristensen/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl vs Saralee Thoungthongkam/Sathinee Jankrajangwong -- the home pair has a slight edge, but not that both Kamilla and Saralee will be playing in the XD earlier.
Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui vs Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- with no Chinese pair left in the draw, the Korean pair should take the title.
MIXED DOUBLES
Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung vs Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thongthongkam (MATCH OF THE ROUND) -- a thrilling match in store...althought the Korean is slightly superior, home advantage favor the Thai pair. I hope the Thai pair win!
Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter-Juhl vs Lee Yong Dae/Hwang Yu Mi -- the Korean has a slight edge after several impressive performances in the past few weeks. But, the Danes are no pushover. Like the first match, it could go into the rubber set.

ERR....I don't think any Chinese players were in Manila for the Philippines Open. You can't compare the standards of players there vs in Bangkok this week!
Dreamzz 07-28-2006, 09:34 AM i predict the malaysian women will win, but then i would, wouldn't i?? :D
xijiayu 07-28-2006, 09:37 AM CJ is strong but i hope MHH to win.
nugroho 07-28-2006, 09:42 AM i think chinese women are in trouble with only one representation on semifinal from WD and WS category...
hmmm.. i hope it will happen more in the future... dont get me wrong but it will be more interesting with no domination from one country....
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 09:52 AM i agree .. like ms n md ... it is not dominated by one or two country only ...so it's more interesting 2 see ... ws n wd are boring ... hehehe

Strongly agreed.
This is what I hope to see as well in womens' badminton.
Chen Jin never participated in PO. I hope Hafiz will do well and advance to the Finals. It will be a close match. For WS.. i hope Yao Jie will win.
After winning the ABC title in doubles... i hope LWW and CTF can win this TO. :)

It's been Lin Dan era for a quite long time. Before that, it was Chen Hong era. He used to dominate, won a lot of titles. He is still a 6* star title holder (how many people equal to or better than that? only Lin Dan, Taufik, Chen Jin) . He plays at very high level, with decent skills and powerful attacks. He's also polite, and selfish-less (his off court at Korean open). He looks good, well beauty is in the eye of beholder. Generally he's a nice guy, while very few people like him here    Very few people even count him as one of the top players.
If we define top players as top ranked players, the top fours are:
Lin Dan, Lee CW, Gade, and Chen Hong !
If we define top players as won highest star tournaments(6 and up), the only top players are (happen to be 4):
Lin Dan, Taufic, Chen Jin and Chen Hong!
Lin Dan and Chen Hong are the only 2 top players in both category, if Chen Hong is not one of the top players, who is entitled to? Maybe only Lin Dan can claim that. No body else can! Even though badminton has entered Lin Dan era from Chen Hong era for quite a long time, Chen Hong is still a strong competitor.
BCL, well, I have to admit, he's a runner up expert. Anyone remember he won anything big, 6 star Danish open in which year?
I predicted Chen Yu would achieve something early. Simply because he's a long time victim of the current IBF system. He's good enough to be at any tournaments, but unfortunately he did not have chance to participate really. So he deserves something.
By the way, I am not a fan of any particular player, I'm just a fan of badminton. That's the key difference between my posts with other die hard fans.
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 11:58 AM i know chen hong is a good player ... but i think he is in 2nd group players .... the top player should be lindan, peter gade, lee chongwei n taufik hidayat ... they win a lot of tournament n beat a lot of top player many times .... but for chen hong, i think he still difficult 2 beat players like lindan, chong wei, hyun il, peter gade n taufik ...
EastDevil 07-28-2006, 11:59 AM My bet is on Chen Hong. He has been advancing into the later rounds of tournaments consistently for the recent months. Its about time he makes the final step. Furthermore, he is the only guy I have seen smashing like that with a NS8000, power. He got to be rewarded for hanging in there while everybody keep saying he is going down.
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 12:00 PM it's time 4 chen jin n chen yu to show their strength n win the title ....
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 12:03 PM hopefully he can win to then the wc ... but i think it's still difficult 4 him ...
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 12:05 PM group #1 : Lindan, Lee CW, Taufik H, n Peter Gade
group #2 : Bao CL, Kenneth J, Hafiz, Chen Hong, Chen Jin, Lee Hyun Il
group #3 : Chen Yu, Kuan Ben Hong, Shon SeungMo, Park Sun Hwan, Bonsak, Eric Pang, etc
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 12:06 PM Final : Chen Yu vs Chen Jin ... remember that, hehehe

You are absolutely right. Here is another double standard.
When Gade losses, people said Gade is still the best, even he lost because of his age (just check some posts today). While for Chen Hong, people said he is not good no matter what he is still winning, he is not good simply because he is getting old.
So getting old, as an excuse, can make Gade the best, no matter how he performs. While getting old, as a reason, can make Chen Hong inferior, no mattter how he performs.
Is it funny or not?
TKG2609 07-28-2006, 12:32 PM hehehe maybe after winning the wc, it might change people mind about him ...

Nolar..Actually i watched a few of his matches and i think that he is a top player. I was really happy when he bet Lin Dan for the All England title 2005.

Gade never win wc yet ;)

Same feelings too. Even when I watched him lost to Chen Jin, I felt he's better than Chen Jin.
taneepak 07-28-2006, 07:22 PM I understand that Chen Yu comes out on top of Lin Dan, BCL, and Chen Hong during serious training sessions. What he lacks is to play as well under big time 'match atmospherics', and as a consequence is always out of the national team for team competitions.
khelben 07-28-2006, 08:37 PM I understand that Chen Yu comes out on top of Lin Dan, BCL, and Chen Hong during serious training sessions. What he lacks is to play as well under big time 'match atmospherics', and as a consequence is always out of the national team for team competitions.
I've heard that too. He seemingly does well only against his own team mates. Playing against someone who trains day in day out with you makes it a totally different ball game. For example, there is no on-court coaching, and the familiararity of the opponent's game now is so extreme that there are literally no more surprises. So along with this radical change in dynamics, we should also be expecting some results to occasionally veer off the expected path.
However, I still feel Chen Hong stands in better stead to win the semi finals. Afterall, he has been there and done that. But both men have huge stakes in this game. For Chen Yu, the chance of being in another final and having a shot at gold has eluded him for the past 3 years, while Chen Hong is still struggling to find some winning form ahead of the World Championships. All in all, I hope it will be a great match. Sometimes it matters not that both sides are from the same country. A great match is still a great match regardless of the setup.

You're most welcome!
Unfortunately for us there are no Malaysians/Indonesians in tomorrow's finals.
yannie 07-29-2006, 04:54 AM chen yu might be the next zhang ning, the older he gets, the better he plays... who knows...
xijiayu 07-29-2006, 04:54 AM This is just another 'consistently' poor performance by Msia players, eventhough most top Chinese players pulled out in the final minute. For MD, I have doubt that CTF/LWW could improve more since they are not young anymore. We have a couple of young and potential pairs around and I think it's time to put more pressure on them to achieve some thing bigger.
MS is still the most worried dept for me as we have absolutely no one who is on par with LCW. MHH has not progressed for long, KBH can be dropped from the national team if he continues to lose to unknown players. Other players like YKB and JC have not achieve anything impressive. Young MS from rashid's team have not proven themselves. I am really worried, to be honest.

EastDevil 07-29-2006, 05:27 AM china MS is looking pretty strong going into 2008 olympic
Not really in my opinion. They have a lot of good depth, but when it comes to dependable ones, there's only Lin Dan. The rest is still not consistent enough to be depended on.
If we look at the potential champions materials around, its quite even in that each country have one or at most two of them. But China's advantage is that they have enough good quality players to wear out the best guys from other countries. :D

CTF/LWW is very young compared to the current world number one men's doubles. :p

azneric 07-29-2006, 09:16 AM whoa...korean player lee yong dae in both mix and double final
event 07-29-2006, 10:17 AM whoa...korean player lee yong dae in both mix and double final :eek:Yes. They had 3 players who were in two semi-final matches each today but only Lee Yong-dae won both his matches. The other two, Lee Jae-jin and Lee Hyo-jung, who both had a few occasions to wear two hats in finals of tournaments in 2005, only succeeded separately today, not together in their mixed semi-final.
Both mixed and women's doubles tomorrow will be Korea vs. Thailand and both will involve Saralee Thoungthongkam.

The other two, Lee Jae-jin and Lee Hyo-jung, who both had a few occasions to wear two hats in finals of tournaments in 2005, only succeeded separately today, not together in their mixed semi-final.
Lee Yong Dae seems to have formed a very lethal partnership with Jung Jae Sung in the MD and Hwang Yu Mi in the XD. I think the key thing is to find a younger partner for him. I think Jung Jae Sung is 26 or 27, while Lee Yong Dae has not even reached 18! As for the XD partnership, do you know how old is Hwang Yu Mi? They will go far...
As for Lee Jae Jin, he hasn't been winning titles with Lee Hyo Jung this year...despite not playing in MD  . Only in the past 2 tournaments we have seen the new partnership with Hwang Ji Man. I am not sure how this new pair will fare in the LR...since Korea has the tendency to mix and match the players. I thought Hwang Ji Man is pretty settled with Han Sang Hoon. But...apparently Tan Kim Her has other ideas.

But...apparently Tan Kim Her has other ideas.Jung Jae-sung turns 24 at the end of August. Lee Yong-dae will turn 18 a few weeks later. Hwang Yu-mi is 23 now. You're right about the mixing and matching. It isn't just a Tan Kim Her idea, either. It started before that. Kim Dong-moon and Ha Tae-kwun were the same age and played together when they were in middle school apparently and still from 1995 to 1997, his regular partner was Kang Kyung-jin. The same thing seems to have happened with Lee Jae-jin and Jung Jae-sung. They were seeing results back in 2000 when they were both in high school and then played together all through university but then were split up. Tan Kim Her may have done more mixing because this is a rebuilding period and finding the right combination has been a little tricky. This is Lee Yong-dae's 3rd year on the national team but he is only now coming into his own and I think Tan did right in finding him a strong partner. As for mixed, if Hwang passes her prime, there is always Ha Jung-eun, who is only a year older and she and Lee were runners-up in the nationals last year losing to Lee/Lee in the final.

TKG2609 07-29-2006, 02:35 PM but why they dont have any special player in men single ????
event 07-29-2006, 06:45 PM but why they dont have any special player in men single ????Define special. Lee Hyun-il is #7 in the world, was runner-up at the All England this year and won 2 tournaments last year. He was ranked #1 for almost a year back around 2003. Shon Seung-mo was the Olympic silver-medalist. Neither of them are consistent these days. Park Sung-hwan reached the QF of this event but in my opinion he isn't destined to be a champion. Korea's men's singles players have never dazzled the world like their doubles players but they're still good.
2cents 07-29-2006, 06:58 PM Lee Hyun-il ... was ranked #1 for almost a year back around 2003.
Can it be verified?
Ranked #1 for a year? How many players did that before? Any experts help to answer? Ranked #1 for a year is really the #1. If ranked #1 for a couple of days, even weeks, doesn't mean much. The ranking system had so many pitfalls. But for a year, is different!

The ranking system had so many pitfalls. But for a year, is different!Maybe I was exaggerating. I checked and I found he was #2 for several months in late 2003. I must have remembered that wrong. I wouldn't think being #1 for a whole year would be that rare. When LCW took the #1 spot away briefly a few months ago, hadn't Lin Dan been ranked #1 for a year or more continuously?
event 07-30-2006, 08:06 AM Can it be verified?Yes. You can verify it with the historical rankings function on the IBF website.Ranked #1 for a year?Well, technically, I didn't actually say for one year. I said "almost a year". Either way, it looks as if my memory was way off. In fact I can only find him ranked #1 for one week back in early 2004 (http://www.internationalbadminton.org/histmensingles.asp?rankno=425&cat=m).
If you want to check who was ranked #1 for the longest, try that function.
