Ooooops, Paul, you beat me too it, confirmed, not posted yet.
Talking about US Open. There was a blooper when some of the Pros were asked by the Media People weather they are joining the US OPEN.. guess what was the players answer? What US Open? Is there US Open?
The media men were shocked. They were thinking weather they got their info wrong ( No Such Open ) or the players blur. It was really funny looking at the reaction from both sides.

..here is the draw, i guess it just came out....
Not much big names, but it has some pretty interesting participants..Among the well known players, the Asuncions siblings are here...Along with MS top seed Yousuke Nakanishi..Hmm, the duo of Mona Santoso and Angeline de Pauw(bottom half) are participating- personally, i'm looking fw to both of them cranking it out..And on the top half, the local duo of Grace and Johanna are playing as well..I'm looking for a rematch between those 4..
And as usual Tony, and now Halim partnering is joining the festivities:cool:...With Howard Bach and Bob M. pairing in the upper half, i wouldn't be surprise to see those 4 in the Finals..it should be a fun one to follow..;)
BTW, i noticed the name Chandra(from INA), who will be playing MS, MD and XD..does anyone know who he is??harimau, do you know??..

Just real quickly reviewed the draw and as usual, I question some of the seedings, or there lackof:
Grace Peng and Johannah Lee are not seeded in WD.
Lili Zhou is not seeded in WS. Mona Santoso is not seeded either and COINCIDENTALLY, Mona is playing Lili in the 1st Round.
Howard Bach and Bob Malaythong are not seeded, yet Dean Schoppe and Matt Fogarty are seeded 3/4 (no offense to them, nice guys :)).
Nick Jinadasa plays the # 1 seed in the 1st Round in the MS.

..Whoah, the XD field looks like the most fun and entertaining. Check this out:
Halim H. & Angeline De Pauw
Tony G. & Minarti Timur  ... Too bad though, as they will most likely meet each other at the SF, if they get that far..If they meet, wow, it's gonna be almost like the Final..But i will make an early prediction that Tony & Minarti will be the winner, but who knows;):p
Plus a lot of other very good combination pairs...surprised not to see Grace playing XD..oh my, this looks like a pretty nice treat..;)

Rofl - Kyle is playing Chandra... ouch! Could Kyle pull the win out?! I sure hope so! I train with Kyle during the Canadian season! Hes in ridiculously good shape haha, but very unflexible so I think it takes him more effort to move

He is not the Chandra Wijaya. His name is only CHandra; yup he was an ex pelatnas who resigned or dismissed from there last year. I saw him played against Ety and some older guys at OCBC on SAT; it was a good for fun only. But later on that same day, he also picked up some double game with TONY G, HALIM H, and HOWARD BACH and they also switched around pairing with different player among them all. But he does nt look too sharp among the four he might be the weakest one. I hope he does nt still have jet lag or what ever.

I just saw Minarti Timur and the other Indonesians at the Asuncion Badminton Center yesterday. No idea why their still here in the Philippines. Are they joining or not?
Lili Wang is a Chinese player who married an Indonesian player, Tek Ming. They're currently based in the Philippines. :)

The no 1-seeded Asuncion siblings lost to Vitaly Durkin/Valerya Sorokina in 3 tight sets 21-19, 20-22, 20-22. The winner will meet Eric Go/Mona Santoso in the QF today.
The other suprise came from MD where Howard Bach/Khan Malaythong lost to Alexander Nikolaenko/Vitaly Durkin also in 3 close sets 21-13, 21-23, 20-22. This guy...Vitaly Durkin must be pretty good  The winner entertains the no 1-seeded pair of Mike Beres/William Milroy today.
Meanwhile, Tony Gunawan/Halim Heryanto had no problems with their first test, an easy 21-9, 21-5 victory over Tommy McKee/Christopher Lun and should go all the way to win the title! Partnering with Angelina De Pauw, Halim is also in contention for the XD tile. The pair beat the 5/8th seed Brian Prevoe/Amelie Felx 21-17, 21-17 to reach the QF.

..alright guys, as promised, i was able to go tonight to watch Day 1 action and took some pics, although only the matinee matches, as i came after work..When i came, the place was pretty quiet, not many people. But i would assume it'll get more and more people, as the QF days come.
Some "noticeable" reviews:
The matches that i saw weren't that much interesting, as 50% of the combatants were up and comers/juniors. And the rest were usual OCBC players.
-Saw a couple of Trinidad & Tobago MD players(see pics below). I believe they actually scored an upset over the OCBC jrs.
-Saw the Asuncions siblings in action(see pics below). Although Kennie lost her WD match against a Russian pair, which i thought played very2 well. They won in 2 straight sets, come storming back in the 2nd set after being down 15-7. Kennie's partner was the weak link, i believed. Kennevic on the other hand, played a long match pairing up with Eric Go.
-Saw Chandra(Ko Wi) in action(see pic below). IMO, i thought he wasn't that impressive.
-Saw Tony & Halim pairing up(see pics below). Not much actions, as they were playing 50% capacity.
-Saw the 2 SGVBC gals, Grace and Johanna in their catchy blue uniforms(see pics below). Hehe, DinkAlot must be a big supporter of them..;):)
-Saw the Yeh twins in actions(actually took quite a few pics of them just for our friend LazyBuddy)..;)..They took an early exit though, against Grace & Johanna.
-And finally saw the defending GGBC WD pair, Angie and Mona(see pics below). They won in straight sets, although the Smash City's gals gave them a run for their money in the 1st set, only to lose it near the end. I thought they were playing casually, take it easy against Daphne Ng and Lauren Todt. IMO, too little action to tell if the defending GGBC Open's WD pair were really playing serious or not, but yah, it's true, that Mona gal really plays like a "guy". Body movement and smashes just as hard as a "guy" also. Although her movement on court were not as smooth as Angie..:p;)
Overall, 2nd Day 1st Rd matches weren't much interesting. But the 2 pairs which caught attention were the Russian WD pair and Trinidad & Tobago MD pair...Anyways, enjoy the few "clear" pics below and sorry for my unstable hand.:p I will try to get more & better and less blurry pics in the coming days...;)

You're not going to OCBC to watch Grace play? I believe they are playing against the #1 seed from Canada. If they win, they might get a rematch with Angie and Mona, looks like a GGBC rematch.
I will be at SGVBC tonight, win the pot, I'm in.:D

MS-Japan
MD-Tony/Halim
WS-Lili

MX-Halim/Angie
In the Mixed Doubles, if the #2 canada loses to Russia, Halim/Angie will have to beat 3 russian teams to win. Wow, how exciting is that.

Unfortunately, most the predictions are not going to be realized. The Russians are totally dominating the doubles and the women's singles. They have beaten most of the seeds (including some ex-Indonesians). Surprising indeed....
Some of the notable upsets:
MD
Mike Beres/William Milroy (top seed) lost to Alexander Nikolaenko/Vitaly Durkin 15-21, 17-21 -- I have mentioned in my post yesterday that Vitaly Durkin is quite a player...and he showed his ability once again by advancing in both MD and XD.
WS
Lili Zhou lost to Evgenya Dimova 18-21, 18-21 -- totally speechless....the Russian girl is going to play in 3 semi-finals today!
WD
Amelie Felx/Florence Lavoie (top seed) lost to Johannah Lee/Grace Peng 10-21, 3-10 (retired) -- I understand that Grace and Johannah are from SGVBC? So, there's something for the home crowrd to cheer for in the semi-final today.
Eva Lee/Mesinee Mangkalakiri (seeded 3/4) lost to Nina Vislova/Valerya Sorokina 18-21, 6-21 -- another surprise win for the Russian...they are not to be underestimated!
Irina Ruslayakova/Evgenya Dimova beat Angelina De Pauw/Mona Santoso (seeded 3/4) 21018, 21-6 -- wow...probably the first time an Indonesian pair lost to a Russian pair in badminton? The Russian is guaranteed a place in the final after their second-seeded pair also won.
XD
Vitaly Durkin/Valerya Sorokina beat Eric Go/Mona Santoso 21-16, 21-19 -- second loss in one night to Russians for Mona Santoso!
Mike Beres/Valerie Loker (seeded 3/4) lost to Howard Bach/Eva Lee (seeded 5/8) 17-21, 9-21 -- Howard will want to exact revenge on his loss in MD to Vitaly Durkin. But, not easy....
Halim Heryanto/Angelina De Pauw lost to Evgeny Dremin/Evgenya Dimova 17-21, 21-17, 16-21 -- yet another shocking defeat...even the presence of the ex All-England and World Champion did not matter.
Sergey Ivlev/Nina Vislova bt Mike Beres/Tammy Sun (seeded 2) 21-12, 21-17 -- another final appearance guaranteed for the Russian as they continued to steamroll their opposition..this time the second seeded Canadian pair.

Thanks for the update. Yes, the Russians are strong...go-go Grace and Johannah! :D

yes, indeed...the Russians are coming in *full-force*...They're ALL GOOD!!..:)I think Viper2005 earlier predictions of all Russians in the Finals in all the fields could come true... ;)

i missed this match, but watched Durkin played in his MD's match-he's solid(will show his pics)...
WS
Lili Zhou lost to Evgenya Dimova 18-21, 18-21 -- totally speechless....the Russian girl is going to play in 3 semi-finals today!
yup, saw that match; i can't believe Dimova played in 3 matches also-she's solid also(will show her pics)..
WD
Amelie Felx/Florence Lavoie (top seed) lost to Johannah Lee/Grace Peng 10-21, 3-10 (retired) -- I understand that Grace and Johannah are from SGVBC? So, there's something for the home crowrd to cheer for in the semi-final today.
from what i recall, she injured her ankle(most likely her right ankle. She had to be helped and carried off the court by one of the tourney's official. And i saw Paisan took some pics of her using a HP, as she was being carried off from inside the arena to outside..:p
Eva Lee/Mesinee Mangkalakiri (seeded 3/4) lost to Nina Vislova/Valerya Sorokina 18-21, 6-21 -- another surprise win for the Russian...they are not to be underestimated!
yes, this duo is amazing...playing against U.S. top WD pair, they fight their way and able to win in straight sets..Nothing fancy or power smashes, just pure hard work, smart shot selections and defense..(will have pics of them)..
Irina Ruslayakova/Evgenya Dimova beat Angelina De Pauw/Mona Santoso (seeded 3/4) 21018, 21-6 -- wow...probably the first time an Indonesian pair lost to a Russian pair in badminton? The Russian is guaranteed a place in the final after their second-seeded pair also won.
the GGBC defending WD champ will not see a rematch with Johanna and Grace..I guess this is not their luck..(will have some pics of them also)..
XD
Vitaly Durkin/Valerya Sorokina beat Eric Go/Mona Santoso 21-16, 21-19 -- second loss in one night to Russians for Mona Santoso!
i did not see this one, as it was played before i came...but i wasn't surprised either..
Mike Beres/Valerie Loker (seeded 3/4) lost to Howard Bach/Eva Lee (seeded 5/8) 17-21, 9-21 -- Howard will want to exact revenge on his loss in MD to Vitaly Durkin. But, not easy....
i did not see this one either, but also interested to see Howard's rematch against Durkin..Howard will want to avenge his lost, but i think it depends on Eva..If she can't handle and take off pressure from Howard, i doubt they'll win against Durkin and Sorokina..
Halim Heryanto/Angelina De Pauw lost to Evgeny Dremin/Evgenya Dimova 17-21, 21-17, 16-21 -- yet another shocking defeat...even the presence of the ex All-England and World Champion did not matter.
saw the end of it, rubber set..i thought both Halim and Angie committed many self-errors...One word though, Dremin is a "monster of a player";) (will have pics)..
Sergey Ivlev/Nina Vislova bt Mike Beres/Tammy Sun (seeded 2) 21-12, 21-17 -- another final appearance guaranteed for the Russian as they continued to steamroll their opposition..this time the second seeded Canadian pair.
saw the end of this match...(will have pics of them)..

Kyle Foley is out of singles but still in doubles.

Andrew Dabeka for the win! His style is ugly but effective. His net shots are unreal... he just can't bend his back or something. Watch him move around its so wierd looking.

The Russians are coming right at the doorsteps of the US.
China may be able to prevent their advance if the prize money is upped many more times to make the very long journey to OCBC (perhaps far too small for an upgraded Open) worth their while for the world-class Asians. Then our fellow BFers in the US will be able to enjoy many more top-rate Opens. ;)

..alright, here's the review and some pics from the QF day. I will divide them in 2 separate posts..
Came in a bit late, missed some earlier XD matches, but saw the end of 2 of the XD matches..Crowd was almost the same size as yesterday, but filled up soon just before the MD & WD matches..Overall, the matches were much more interesting the yesterday's matches..
Here are some notable reviews:
-Saw the XD match between Halim/Angie vs. Dremin/Dimova(see 10th pic) was pretty fast paced. I saw the tail end of it, but Halim and esp. Angie made more self-errors towards the end, which basically put an end to their quest for a SF place. One player which caught my eye after watching this is Dremin from Russia. He is young, tall and fast. Their outlook:And after seeing him deliver some pretty powerful hit downs, i think they have a chance to take the XD title to the bank.
-Saw the MS match between top seeded Nakanishi vs. Go. The match went rubber set, with Go giving Nakanishi a run for his money, but fell short. Nakanishi made quite a lot of self-errors in the 3rd set, which helped brought the score closer. But in the end, he prevailed over Go. His outlook:he has a good chance to take the MS title, but he got a bit of scare from Go.
- Saw the longest and probably the most intense match of the day. MS match between Ivlev and a Canadian guy(sorry, forgot the name, it has a long name). Quite worth a watch, as both players have different styles of play:Russian quicker with more power shots while the Canadian with more patient and simple game. At the end, the Canadian made more self-errors thus the defeat.
- Saw the youngest player on the court in WS match between Cee Keputra(17th & 18th pics) vs. Eva Lee. No contest, but Keputra has shown pretty good hope for U.S. future in WS field.
- Saw Dabeka played, but his opponent i believe was older than him.
- Saw the SGVBC gal won their match in a WO. I believe Amelie Felix injured her right ankle. Didn't see what happened, but it looked quite severe(looked like similar injury to WCH, hopefully it's not) as she was carried off the court and outside the stadium by a tourney's official. Too bad for her though.:p Outlook:Grace and Johanna have a chance now to win the WD title. But they will have to go thru the Russian pairs starting tomorrow(SF) and if they do pass the test, then most likely they'll play another Russian WD pair.
- Saw 2 Russian WD pairs, dispose of their opponent. Personally, the pair of Vislova(2nd & 3rd pics w/ white skirt)/Sorokina has the best chance to challenge for the title. They look and work as a team.
- Saw 2 Russian MD pairs, dispose of the top seeds. Again, Dremin and his partner really took care of the Brazil pair. While Durkin and his partner took care of the top seeds Beres and Milroy. Outlook : tomorrow MD SF matches will be 1 heck of a show.
- Saw Chandra and his partner loss to the Canadian pair. No match as there are many self-errors. Bottom line after seeing 2 matches:there's no question why Chandra(Ko Wi) is no longer in Pelatnas..;)
- Saw the defending GGBC WD champ, Angie and Mona, just lost it out there on the court. From the very beginning, i can feel both Angie and Mona just didn't have the fire in their eyes to play. Came out very flat and non-aggressive with their body language-> I guess they were still feeling the affect of their losses in the XD. Then after the 1st set ended, saw them sort of arguing and threw their rackets on the floor mat. After that, they never recover and lost tamely. The funny thing was, their opponent wasn't even dominating, as Dimova's partner was awkward, slow and reg. smashes. Oh well...
- Saw Tony and Halim just toying their OCBC pupils. Almost non-watchable.:p
Anyways, the SF day should be one entertaining day. I, myself, am looking fw to the MD and WD matches. With XD and MS, WS as gap-fillers...Sorry again if some of the pics are still blurry..:p..
Enjoy the pics and stay tune for more pics tomorrow..;):)

yes, i'm using a cheap reg. Kodak digital camera(CX7530 to be exact)...Yes, i was trying to find that feature but unfortunately, it has limited options for a faster shutter speed..Maybe you guys can help me out a bit; the only options it has are:
1. ISO speed (which ranges from ISO 80 to ISO 400)
2. Exposure metering(multi pattern, center weight and center spot)
3. Focus zone(multi zone and center zone)
4. Long time exposure (from none to 4 seconds)
and to use a Night feature(which probably has the fastest shutter speed)...But then the pic will be a bit dark, as i can't use flash during play...anyways, will play around with the settings some more...:p:rolleyes:

yah, i think that's what i'm gonna try this time around. Yesterday when i tried the Sport mode, the pics came out pretty dark(as it only allows very minimal light). Esp. it gets a bit challenging when taking action/sports photos without flash..:p But i think the ISO on my digicam the last couple of days was set to Auto, that's why it's producing darker pics. This time i'm going to boost the ISO speed to 400, maybe even 800, as it is the max ISO speed provided..

Amazing...the Russians are going home with at least 2 titles after their WD and XD pairs marched to the finals tomorrow.
In the mixed doubles, Vitaly Durkin/Valerya Sorokina beat the home favorites Howard Bach/Eva Lee in 3 tight sets 21-18, 17-21, 21-15. The Russian pair will meet their counterpart Sergey Ivlev/Nina Vislova. Later on, the two Russian girls (Valerya Sorokina/Nina Vislova) managed to beat Johannah Lee/Grace Peng again in 3 sets 21-19, 18-21, 21-11. They will play against Marina Yakusheva/Ella Karachkova.
In the men's doubles, Valery Durkin also partnered Alexander Nikolaenko and beat Kyle Foley/Brian Prevoe 21-8, 24-22. They will meet the overwhelming favorite Tony Gunawan/Halim Haryanto, who are not troubled so far. They beat the other Russian pair of Evgeny Dremin/Sergey Lunev 21-13, 21-15. It will ba a major shock if the former World and All-England champion lose tomorrow!
The men's singles is the only event to have the top seed Yousuke Nakanishi playing against the second seed Andrew Dabeka in the final. As for the women's singles, Ella Karachkova is going for two golds as she will meet the home favorite Johannah Lee tomorrow.

Tony Gunawan is NOT GOING to the World Championships. There will be a new winner!

Yes, they're back for more exhibition actions..I will confirm with Halim tomorrow to ask what's his plan, if i'm able to meet him...Abt Tony and Howard teaming up together again for the upcoming WC, hmm, i doubt they'll go back and defend their title- i don't know..But i will confirm with Tony tomorrow as well, if i have a chance to meet him..;)

Just came back from the SF day of the U.S. Open...got lotsa pics and reviews to share with y'all...but i will reply to badMania's review first..
They will play against Marina Yakusheva/Ella Karachkova.
yes, and i think it will be quite a battle, both pairs are solid..But i think Ivlev and Vislova are gonna get the title(will have pics later)..It should be a close one, unless one pair decide to "give away" the match to the other..?!?!.. :p
Hmm, nah, i doubt Tony and Halim will lose..The weak link of the 4 of them is Nikolaenko...Though Durkin is a real deal, very solid and consistent player..(will have pics later)..
The men's singles is the only event to have the top seed Yousuke Nakanishi playing against the second seed Andrew Dabeka in the final. As for the women's singles, Ella Karachkova is going for two golds as she will meet the home favorite Johannah Lee tomorrow.
both matches will be interesting...Johannah suffered a scare in the 2nd set, as she appeared to injured her right ankle, but rallied back after being down and won in a tight 2nd set(will have pics also)..
Alright, that's a quickie review...stay tune for the pics and my review in a bit..

Yeah, what's going on with Charmaine Reid's top? It looks like she's wearing a sports bra or something.
I can't see any photos that are in focus that show any of the Canadians wearing that. The only others I can tell are Canadian are just wearing regular polo shirts with dull colours.
sorry event for the blurred pics...yah, as far as i remember, the Canadians basically wore a simple red and plain white polos/skirt/shorts..As far as i remember, the only ones that wore different colors were C. Reid and Dabeka..

..OK folks, here are the pics and review of Day 4 actions...Arrived a few minutes before the start, and surprisingly not many people were in the stands..Almost none!!..Considering this is a Semifinal day, i was a bit surprise by the lack of attendance..Only til the start of the MS/WS or halfway thru the XD matches, were people start filling in..
Anyways, here are the pics and noticeable reviews:
- XD match #1 - Dremin/Dimova vs. their compatriots Islev/Vislova...the match was pretty fast, almost done within 20 minutes..Islev was throwing bombs whenever he can while Vislova was just as quick at the net...Didn't see the same Dremin as i saw in the QF, seemed slow out there-Dremin and his partner really never had a chance to regroup and established their game....This match was going to be the start of a bad day for Dimova..
- XD match #2 - Bach/Lee vs. Durkin/Sorokina..wow, it was a pretty good match all around. The Russian pair took the first set, but the OCBC pair fought back to regain the 2nd set..However in the 3rd, it was coast to coast for the Russian..Again, Bach tried his best, but it was Bach's partner which was "attacked' most of the time..As Durkin was basically "aiming" at Eva Lee and she couldn't do anything much..
- MS match #1 - Nakanishi vs. Wojciekewics(sp.??)..Nakanishi basicaly controlled the game from the beginning..No match..BTW, he reminded me LCW and the way he plays(small stature, lean but very2 quick)..
- MS match #2 - Vaughn vs. Dabeka..It was an interesting match, but Dabeka really controlled Vaughn..
- WS match #1 - Johanna Lee vs. Dimova..wow, what an ending to Dimova..Not only did she lose the 2nd set, after leading by a few pts and having Johanna slightly injured her right ankle, but at the end, she threw her racket in frustration..After the match, she basically put a towel on her head and just walked away..It was a great ending as fans were really pulling for the local and hometown Johanna..
- WS match #2 - between Eva Lee vs. Nantuchova(sp??)..it was no contest, Eva gave it her all, but came short..
- MD match #1 - between Durkin/Nikolaenko vs Foley/LeFoie(sp??)...The Canadian pair tried their best, but Durkin was there controlling and really played magnificently..
- MD match #2 - between Tony/Halim vs. Pavel/Dremin...no contest for the 2 veterans..still quick eventhough playing against a pair almost 10 yrs younger than them..There was a play during the match, where Dremin tried to do a Tony Gunawan's impersonation of throwing the racket out and then grabbing another on from the sideline..After the play, the umpire had to call Dremin and asked him what's going on??..Also during the match, i quickly glanced to see Durkin's reaction, who was sitting on the bench, and all i saw was him shaking his head and in "awe"...Tomorrow he will get a lesson from the Tony-meister himself..hehe;):p
- WD match #1 - between Johanna/Grace vs. Vislova/Sorokina...Well, folks, Grace and Johanna gave it all their best but there's just too much to defend, too quick, too strong, too clever and most importantly too young..Again, they did it with hard work, smart shot selections and defense..After watching 3 continuous days, we'llprobably have the "best overall" *woman's* player in thie tourney, hands down in Vislova, at least from myself..Her game is so efficient yet she made it look effortless that people watching her game will enjoy it..Very2 consistent and doesn't make a lot of mistakes..Thruout the tourney, she really controlled the game and seemd to thrived playing from the back, moving side to side, front and back with fluidity..One thing i noticed abt her technique, she always if not most of the time put her racket up and in a ready position for the next shot..Her partner is the weaker link, but she's also quick at the net..
- WD match #2 - between the other Russian pairs...I'll say it was a doozer..
As far as the outlook for tomorrow's Final matches should be interesting also..I certainly hope all the combatants will give it all their best and give a good showing to the public..I think the XD pairs from Russia were the luckiest winner(as Tony had to WO cos his partner, Minarti Timur wasn't able to come; imagine if they would've played)..hmm:rolleyes: :p ;)
Anyways, enjoy the pics folks. I will divide this into several posts(lots of pics to share)..And sorry for the blurry images, still..:p
Off topic:I think i've given it my best after trying certain settings. Apparently my camera's lens spec is 34mm to 102mm only..:p:( And even if i use the Sports mode, i can't change the ISO nor the LT exposure...the picture will still come out dark...

here's what i thought of some of the matches i saw.
XD - Bach/Lee vs. Durkin/Sorokina: like ctjcad said Howard tried as much as he could to cover Eva. i thought the final points of the match could've gone either way but the Russias outsmarted the American pair simply by attacking Eva. It was a hard fought match for them. After the match, you could see the disappointment that was on the face of Howard. Man do I wish I have the legs of Howard.
MS - Nakanishi vs. Wojcikiewicz: Nokanishi dominated from the beginning until the end. He was very quick and ran Wojcikiewicz all around the court and it was clearly visible that Wojcikiewicz wasn't able to keep up with Nakanishi.
MS - Vaughn vs. Dabeka: i would have to disagree with ctjcad on this. I thought either individual would be able to take it. They both seemed evenly matched. Just whoever was the more consistent in the end.
WS - Lee vs. Karachkova: the match was over right from the beginning. Eva was either hitting everything long or into the net. Karachkova controlled the entire game from the beginning.
MD - Gunawan/Haryanto vs. Dremin/Lunev: no contest at all. the russian pair simply couldn't get through the defenses of Tony and Halim. They would throw smashes from all directions but were deflected right back. I was amazed with the control Tony and Halim had. Though they had a slow start in the 2nd set, they never lost control of the match. I think the umpire told Dremin to put his rackets away when he went to grab a second one while losing his first one during a rally. My friends and I had a nice laugh since we've never seen this done before. :p Most of the points that the Russians scored were not from great shots they hit but from simple errors committed by Tony and Halim.
This is what the finals will look like come tomorrow night.
XD - Durkin/Sorokina vs. Ivlev/Visova (all Russian final)
MS - Nakanish vs. Dabeka
WS - Karachkova vs. Lee
MD - Gunawan/Haryanto vs. Nikolaeko/Durkin
WD - Vislova/Sorokina vs. Yakusheva/Karachkova (another all Russian final)
i will have pictures up ASAP. it's bedtime for me :p

i think a similar situation happened at the 05 WC. i think it was a 3rd round or a QF match between a Malaysian Pair and I forgot the other side. I remember seeing one of the Malaysian player changing his racquet in the middle of a rally. he did it though very fast as if he never left the court. i don't remember though if they won the point but i think they won their game and moved on to the next round.

wow....the russians are pretty good....i guess badminton is really getting more and more popular....
Bdminton is more popular in Russia than most countries and Russians had been good in badminton for a long time. This is not something new. Russians were consistantnly ranked #4 or #5 in Europe in the 1990's behind Denmark, Sweden, and England. They have dropped to about #6 now behind Netherlands, and Germany; but that happens. This current performance is really not an indication of badminton becoming more popular in anywhere.

All the finals have been completed. Team Russia is the big winner of the US Open 2006, with 3 titles in the bag. The first match of the final saw Sergey Ivlev/Nina Vislova beating their compatriot Vitaly Durkin/Valerya Sorokina in 3 sets 15-21, 21-15, 21-13. Later on, the two Russian girls (Nina Vislova/Valerya Sorokina) won their women's doubles final by beating Marina Yakusheva/Ella Karachkova 21-15, 21-18. Vitaly Durkin had to settle for two silvers as he and his partner (Alexander Nikolaenko) lost to the ex World and All-England Champion pairing of Tony Gunawan/Halim Haryanto 10-21, 19-21. This is their 3rd titles after pairing up once again since last year (with golds in Bitburger and Chinese Taipei Opens 2005). Remember that Tony also won golds with Howard Bach in the World Championships 2005 and with Candra Wijaya in the Indonesia Open 2006. He also won the mixed doubles event of the Chinese Taipei Open 2005 with Cheng Wen-Hsing after beating the first seeded pair of Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung. So, it has been a fruitful 12 months for Tony Gunawan.
In the men's singles, there was no upset as the top seed Yousuke Nakanishi triumphed over Andrew Dabeka 21-16, 21-13. In the women's singles, the top seed Ella Karachkova also won the gold after her opponent (Johannah Lee) retired (probably due to injury?) at the interval of the first set when the score was 11-6.
To round up, we have been pretty surprised with the emergence of the Russians in the US Open 2006. Will they start to come to Asia and compete with the best or will they compete only in the European tournaments as before? We shall await...

..after watching the XD Final, i thought the 2nd best, or most arguably the "best" Men's player for the Russian team is Ivlev..Boy, the guy has all the shots covered:ie. smash and esp. his backhand, very2 strong in comparison to Durkin's..Then i thought, perhaps Ivlev could've paired with Durkin in MD, but maybe Ivlev's game is probably more suited for a single game...Same thing with Karachkova, she tried playing WD, but i can see her technique more suited for a single game..(will comment later and have some pics)..

..it's too bad Johanna had to W.O. in the Final..She tried her best, but i guess it wasn't meant to be..Wise move, as she accepted the loss graciously with the fans giving her a big round of applause for her effort..(will have more comments later and pics)..

yes, they really took advantage of an already weak field of players(with the absence of Minarti Timur, Lili Wang etc.)..all they've got to go from here is up..

Alright guys, here are the pics and reviews of the Finals Day...
XD - Saw a real fast actions match. Both pairs seemed to want to get the title very bad. I thought both pairs played evenly thruout the entire match. With a couple of fancy shots here and there and some costly errors as deciders for the match. Again, the outcome were on the gals as they were the ones protecting and controlling the net. Could've gone either way, but the male partner, as a customary in XD, i thought Ivlev played very aggressively, despite having a pretty good size knee brace. I thought his shots were quite consistent and complete..Smashes, you got it. Backhands drives, you got it..At the end, he and Vislova were the winners..
WS - Saw an unfortunate ending to Johanna. She gave her best by coming out and at least playing thru the 11 pts, but after that, she just couldn't force it anymore. I guess it wasn't meant to be for her. The Russian gal was the lucky winner..But Johanna was very gracious, even thanked the crowd who applauded her effort after the award ceremony..;)
MS - Again, the cat-quickness of Nakanishi really was the difference. He basically controlled the game from the beginning. While Dabeka relied on some good opportunities at the net to score some points. In all, he wasn't able to create shots where Nakanishi would have a difficult time retrieving. Saw a couple of shot selections whic Dabeka made which really was like a "free-points"..BTW, i chatted with a fan and we both agree Nakanishi reminded us of Lee Chong Wei(the way he moves and his strokes)..;)
WD - Well, the 2 top pairs surely deserved the spotlight. But i think Karachkova is not suited to play WD. I noticed everytime she hold her racket, it was always low, not at a ready position like what Vislova and the rest of them were holding. However, Karachkova's partner was holding her own also, making some nice cross court shots. Both pairs played their best, but at the end, the consistent pair won the match, in 2 very tight sets. And Vislova was the only double winner for the night.
MD - Nothing really surprising. Tony & Halim really came out with a purpose and just want to end the match as quickly as they can. Both of them setting up each other for some serious hit downs. Esp. Halim, wow Howard must be wondering if it was him doing the hammering-down, hehe;) I also wonder, what if Ivlev was to partner with Durkin?!?! Eventhough the Russian coach was yelling instructions to his 2 players, it has no effect. After a tight 2nd set, at the end, the vast experiences of both Tony & Halim really took its toll on the young Russians.
All in all, the Finals was fun, but for me personally, it didn't have that sense of the dramatic. As the expected winners won and vice versa. On that note, this U.S. Open could be the last one Tony Gunawan will play in.
Anyways, i will divide the pics into several posts. Hope you all don't mind as i took quite a lot. Enjoy-:)
BTW, did anyone watch the live webcast of the Finals??..I took a pic of the camera area where they shot the games in one of these pics..Oh, the 1 pic below which shows 2 gentlemen standing, it was part of a special presentation given to one of the IBF member.

OK guys, just came back from the Finals day of the U.S. Open...When i arrived, was quite surprised that the venue barely has some people..;)
I have been to the US Open Finals many years and I have not seen this small of a crowd as this year. After counting out all the free ticket holders, it looks like there really weren't many who attended. Considering the big bang of badminton explosion we were expecting in USA from the last year Worlds, this is a very disappointing attendence to the only Grand Prix event held in USA. Is badminton becoming any more popular than it was, or is it going down hill in USA?

I imagine a lot of it is lack of press. Unless you check the forums here or on a few select sites, you would never hear of the tourney...
BTW, How are free tickets passed out?

Wow! How did this come about? Is Tony's contract with OCBC up?
Where's Tony going to live? Denmark? Any additional details? If so...maaaan, once I move to the OC, I was planning on taking lessons with Tony. :D
Extraordinary news indeed! I imagine he's being well paid for his services, so more power to him and his family. It sounds analogous to a Ronaldo or Beckham signing by Real Madrid, a lot of good press, but hopefully some distinguished play too :)

IIRC, the total prize money of the tourney has dropped significantly over the past years. That'll be a detriment to any tourney.
I have been to the US Open Finals many years and I have not seen this small of a crowd as this year. After counting out all the free ticket holders, it looks like there really weren't many who attended. Considering the big bang of badminton explosion we were expecting in USA from the last year Worlds, this is a very disappointing attendence to the only Grand Prix event held in USA. sorry folks, had a bit of trouble last night uploading the rest of pics...:P
anyways, here are some more..notice in 1 of the pic, i've sort of zoom in on the ankle brace for Johanna's right ankle-she didn't show any limp, but it must've really been quite bad..Also i've shown 3 pics of Johanna talking to the chair umpire and then to the tournament's Referee(in red) before giving her congratulatory to Karachkova..And in 1 of the pic, she was being interviewed by Jennifer Coleman(U.S.A.'s women singles player)..

I remember seeing Vislova play at the WC'05. She's got quite an unorthodox grip and hitting style, IMHO. Very interesting and entertaining to watch.

wow, you have quite a memory, Quasimodo..;)...yah, she does have an unorthodox grip & hitting styles, let alone her way of defending..however, she does have a very sound fundamental technique(s)-esp. she always have her racket in a ready and up position..

from the photo, tony is using the ns9000, halim look like he's using at700. I know halim was using at700 2 years ago already.
andrew dabeka using a at800of and his japanese opponent is using ns7000 i think

My guess is, Tony is leaving because the Danish's club most likely offered him a "better financial" contract..But after what he learned in his study here, who really knows what the real reason is, only Tony knows..;)
As for Halim, he's staying put here, but who knows how long his contract @ OCBC will be??..
One thing is for sure though, without Tony G., U.S./Southern California/OCBC/L.A. badminton scene will take quite a bit of an effect..:p :(
Really unfortunate that Tony is leaving, the impact to US badminton is tremendous. I hope Tony will take a trip to Northern CA and do some exhibition games before his departure, I am sure all Bay Area fan wish him the best.
Obviously financial has a lot to do for his decision and if Tony still can perform why not grab whatever is available out there. Compare to Zhou Mi(Former Chinese women's singles), Tony is considered quite lucky, at least PBSI did not threaten him for playing at some other countries. Poor Zhao Mi :(

Thank you, my friend, for the hardwork in reporting and especially in trying to put up the pics of the US Open in good time for all to see. The more pics you post, the more time you have to spend and I hope our readers will appreciate this.
Your great effort would have been better rewarded had you used a better camera, in my view. But I'm sure after this experience, you will avail yourself with upgraded resources for future tournaments that you may find time to cover for our members' benefit.
Many thanks again! :D

well, since this is a once in a yr event in the U.S., i don't mind going out there, taking pics, uploading and sharing with you all...i've enjoyed and pleased to do so...:)
I actually thought abt purchasing a new digicam, prior to this tourney, which can cover longer distance and has faster shutter speed, but i didn't have time to select or find the right one..on that note, yes, i totally agree with you (and others), that an upgrade to the choice of digicam is for sure A MUST..:pHopefully next time if i'm able to attend this tourney, i'll take much better pics to share with you all..;):)
another thanks for Chris who tirelessly provides all these pics for us. dont' worry about the quality of the photo. we all appreciate it just as much. :)

Hi, guys!
I`m from Russia, from Moscow region.:) I enter into a youth team of the central federal district of Russia. Has read through here, that you write about badminton in Russia and was surprised very much... Badminton is not very popular here, I can even say, that it is not popular at all.:( When someboby asks me about my passion I answer that badminton and often people have two types of reactions. Whether one asks if it is a kind of joke, others speaks, that it isn`t sport at all.:( People in Russia know badminton just like some fun game in which you can play on a beach or smth. like that, not sport.
We are very glad for our folks. Many of us also did not expect such result. Thanks you for detailed reviews about games and photos! ;)
P.S. I Hope, I have made very few mistakes and you have understood all that I have written here.

lenti, you're welcome...On that note, if you by any chance know some or all of the Russian players which just competed, could you pass along to them that we folks in the Los Angeles and Orange Counties area really appreciate their participation. Without them, especially with the lack of other foreign players playing, this will be a much smaller tournament.
So, our wish is for them, if they can come back again, to participate in next yr's US Open tourney.;)
