Sorry kemana, we're talking about the Singapore Asian Satellite to be held in Singapore the last week of this month. Not the WC in Madrid. Coming to Singapore is much cheaper than going to Madrid.

Serla (MP) - I thought you are not supposed to be in Singapore so soon but it seems you're here already and attending (which) uni? Time really flies!

Hope to see at the SB Hall. Have you decided on which days and times you'll be there? :)

Hahaha I'm also surprised that I'm already in Singapore. I'm studying at SMU.. BadMania is right... hahaa right in downtown. I've decided that I'll come everyday if time permits, that is. Really looking forward to see you there, too, Loh!

Congratulations Serla (mind telling me what this means and why Yannie addresses you by this name) and welcome! You must be very special as the SMU is quite selective and this uni is certainly making a name for itself despite its short history. The SMU badminton captain is Gerald Ho, an ex-national player and Singapore's former no.3. You must have impressed at the interview(s)! ;) And may I know how come BadMania knows where you're going?

So the venue has changed to Toa Payoh Sports Hall. I wonder whether this is the same hall that I went to watch table tennis? I'm sure quite a number of BFers will attend. Do PM me your handphone no. when you're ready. :)

Hahah.. Serla is my name.. weird name? Hahaha. Wow.. that's cool if the captain is Gerald Ho. BadMania and I have been in touch for quite some time, and he is the friend of a lecturer at SMU.. Hahaha. The prof who interviewed me was very nice, so some credit goes to him? Hahahaha. I'm happy to get into the uni as well.

Anyway, I don't even know where the Sports Hall is, but what I know that it's VERY near my house. Hehehe.

Wah, you all think this tournament is equivalent to the WC or what?

Nevertheless, I think Serla will be armed to the teeth (Yannie is going to specialize in this soon, orthodontics, right?). If any talented Thai second team is coming, I'm sure Georgina will be there with her latest image equipment as well. As she is now the Da Jia (Big Sis :D ), I think she's now enjoying the activities put up by the NUS fresh undergrads during the "Rag & Flag" celebrations before the start of the new term.

Don't know who Wei Feng is (not Georgina?) and have not really met erin.

But I think you can rely on Serla! :)

Hi Loh!!!

It's almost as exciting as WC, hahaha! You can probably ask Serla why, when you meet her! :p
Btw, nope... I ended up choosing economics - as it's a wonderful subject... :D
About Wei Feng... you can probably check the "Malaysian Junior" thread for Chong Wei Feng... He is not Georgina... ;)

I've never played at the TPSH although Chew5555 and his kakis are regulars there. So yesterday, I decided to take a trip to TP after work to get acquainted. It is quite far from my office at Raffles Place, unlike the Singapore Badminton Hall which is much closer and this enables me to make more frequent trips there.

TPSH is circular in design, not very big nor tall and is set in the midst of the sports complex comprising the TP Swimming Complex, Singapore Table Tennis Association training centre, TP Stadium and the Sports Council TP office.

My visit coincided with the 2006 National Wushu Championships and it was actually the first time that I had a chance to witness such a competition. The Hall is big enough for 4 badminton courts with room to spare. The ceiling looks a little low and the lights don't seem to be very friendly as they are relatively dim (bad for the camera) and directly overhead. But the seats up in the gallery, though they are more like the less comfortable benches without backs, are quite well spaced out and exudes a breath of warmth when occupied. Movement around the gallery is free and easy.

The most welcomed addition is the airconditioning which contrasted glaringly with the heat and discomfort that a visitor has to bear for long periods at the SB Hall.

Here are some pics. Balance seems to be very important to the wushu exponent. The non-weapon hand is used not only to add beauty to the form and stance but also used to stabilise the body, something that badminton can learn from.

Those going to the Toa Payoh sports hall by MRT should alight at Toa Payoh MRT station and take a short walk through the pedestrian mall (HDB Hub). The Toa Payoh sports hall is next to the Toa Payoh swimming complex/Toa Payoh Gardens. If you are interested in getting some badminton equipment, Classic sports/Safra Toa Payoh, is next to the sports hall/stadium.

I can't help noticing in pic.12 how similar the holding of the Chinese sword by the lady in white, is to that of forehand grip in badminton.

With the non-weapon hand used as a balance, the similarity extends further. But I think by far the more important aspects of Chinese wushu are the footwork and stability, something that the badminton exponent could study further and learn from.

With 'animal-like movements' including jumping, lunging, 'flying', sudden jabbing/dabbing with the peak for birds, diving, etc, for various schools/styles of wushu, this makes it all the more interesting. :D

Hello,

Anybody with news on when the draw will be out. Hong Kong Open's draw is out and the tournament date is the same as this Satellite.

Perhaps this reflects the difference between the organizers standard of a 5 Star tournament and an A grade satellite???

Hope the draw will be out soon.

Cheers.

Hi BaddyNut

Didn't know that you're also interested in this one. Anyone in particular that you have in mind?

Agree that the SBA is unusually slow in coming out with the draw. Don't know what's holding them up, but I expect it to be out very soon as the competition is on Monday. :)

I'm always interested when Malaysian Back up squad is involved. Especially this time when Singapore will be defending its fort. I expect lots on Singapore entries and see how the Singapore national Program fares.

are Kendrick & Ronald competing or are they opting for the more prestigeous event?

According to the just released Draw List, some interesting info on the Men's Singles can be gathered:

Nine countries will be participating with the number of participants in brackets:

Main Draw: MAS (18), SIN (11), INA (9), PHI (6), THA (4), VIE (3), TPE (2), EGY (Egypt) (2) and WAL (Wales) (1).

Qualifying: SIN (19), INA (9), TPE (8), PHI (2), ENG (England) (2), and THA (1).

Notable Absentees: China, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Good turnout from the Philippines. Pleasant surprise from Egypt, England and Wales.

The number of seedings with Indonesia seeded at both No.1 & 2, among others are: MAS (8), INA (3), THA (3), SIN (1) and WAL (1).

Apart from host Singapore which has a total of 30 participants (11M+19Q) in the MS event, Malaysia and Indonesia each sent in a total of 18 players. However, Malaysia has the most number of seeded players (8) who will compete against the no.1 and 2 seeds, Jeffer Rosobin and Tommy Sugiarto from Indonesia. Unfortunately, the real test is not available with the absence of powerhouses China and South Korea.

02. Malaysia - 13 (9M, 4Q, 1S)

We will see who will emerge as the top four players who will most likely be the future stars of their respective countries. :)

I will take a day off tomorrow, Tuesday, to watch the start of the MS, WD, MD and XD. A very long day indeed! I hope to see some of you at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

I pity the winners of today's qualifiers as some would have to play 3 matches, in the morning, afternoon and evening just to gain entry to the Main draw. By tomorrow, they would have lost much of their energy and would be easy prey for their opponents if they should advance any further.

Ok...here's my turn to write about my afternoon at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall. I did not turn up yesterday because I had to settle some personal matters. Therefore, an apology to Loh and Serla for not turning up yesterday.

It was raining cats and dogs since early afternoon and I was lucky to get there when the rain stopped for a while. It was 3pm when I entered the venue and there were matches going on. I took some time to find a good seat and it happened that there was a group of Indonesians there (including Shinta's dad and brother + possibly a badminton coach at a secondary school). We talked about the Indonesian junior players and also the Singaporean players. Shinta's dad even asked me how the Singaporean contingent is doing at the HK Open.

Over at the court, I watched quite a number of doubles matches, most of them won easily by Indonesian pairs. Frans Kurniawan/Rendra Wijaya looked quite impressive in their comprehensive defeat of a Vietnamese pair in just 15 mins. They will meet their counterparts Akhsan/Bona Septano in the QF tomorrow. I also caught the thrilling closing stage of the match between Mohd Arif Latif/Vountus Indra Mawan (both looked very very young) who managed to scrape through the quarter-final after a rubber-set victory 23-21, 16-21, 22-20 over the Singapore pair Ricky Widianto/Chayut Triyachart. The Singapore pair was at match point but eventually lost the match!

Next up was WD and MS matches. Both the Indonesian pairs progress through to the quarter-final without breaking a sweat. Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati beat a Swiss pair 21-13, 21-10 in 25 mins, while Puspa Shendy/Devi Tika Permatasari also thrashed their Philippines opponent 21-9, 21-8 in just 20 mins. The local pair Vanessa Neo Yu Yan/Shinta Mulia Sari also have no problem beating their Malaysian opponent 21-12, 21-10.

In the MS, the most anticipated match was between Tommy Sugiarto (the no 2 seed) and Chong Wei Feng. Tommy was earlier stretched to 3 sets by a China-born Singapore player and this could have an effect on his performance. He was sluggish in the early stages of the first set and let Chong lead 11-6 at the interval. Slowly, he displayed some good touches and managed to level the scores. It was tight at the closing stages but Tommy managed to win 21-19. The second set was also close but Tommy was in the lead until the score was 17-15 to his advantage. Somehow, Chong managed to get a second wind and snatched the second set 21-17. It was also obvious at this stage that Tommy has run out of gas. It was probably the match with the most towel breaks, almost once for every point since the middle of the second set. The umpire also gave Tommy a yellow card perhaps for requesting towel breaks too many times?. When he lost the second set, I knew that it was all-over for Tommy. He basically gave the rubber set to Chong Wei Feng who won easily 21-8. What a disappointment!

The other exciting matches include the match between Alamsyah Yunus and Indra Bagus. It went to deuce in the rubber set, with both players shouting histerically every time they got a point. Indra Bagus won 22-20 in the exciting rubber game.

The last few matches I watched were the XD and MD. All 4 Indonesian pairs won their XD matches and will meet each other tomorrow. The most impressive pair was perhaps the newly formed Tantowi/Yulianti, who beat the no 1 seed Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khee Wei 21-14, 21-17. The other 2 matches were mismatches as Yonathan Suryatama/Nadya Melati and Frans Kurniawan/Nitya Krishinda won easily in 20 mins. The last Indonesian pair, Lingga/Devi Tika Permatasari had some problems beating Syed Akhbar Syed Mustakin/Yeow Mie Xie. They were trailing from the very beginning until the opponent reached game point. They managed to come back and force a deuce at 20-20. They took the last 2 points of the set and won 22-20. The second set was also close. They were leading 14-11 before mistakes began to creep in and they found that they were trailing 15-18 in no time. Only at this stage that they came back yet again and won the second set 21-19.

As for WS, I watched only a portion of the match between Maria Kristin Yulianti and Chen Jiayuan. The Indonesian girl won 21-19, 21-16 and will face her compatriot Maria Elfira Christina tomorrow. The match which caught my attention was between Melicia Kurniawan and a Thai girl. And that was because of the Indonesian girl's coach, Liang Chiu Hsia. I was quite surprised to see her in Singapore and apparently, Melicia is one of her protege. The young Indonesian girl won 21-19, 21-13 and she will face Gu Juan tomorrow.

So, that's all from me for now. I am still not sure whether I will go tomorrow evening (matches will start from 5:30pm).

Hi badMania, we really missed you yesterday. I was too tired to go today after standing up most of the time at the mini stadium and it was raining as well. But tomorrow's timing after office hours will suit me better and I hope you can make it too. Wonder whether Serla and Georgina will show up?
