MD QF

HE / SHEN vs LINDLEY / LANGRIDGE
tough one, both relatively unknown, but i'm with the chinese here.

YOO / JEON vs LEE / HWANG
another tough one, i give the edge to yoo / jeon.

KIDO / SETIAWAN vs JUNG / LEE
doesn't get easier, does it? jung / lee to benefit from home support, though kido / setiawan have done very well to beat the danes.

GUNAWAN / WIJAYA vs KOO / CHAN
match of the round by far. i'm going with koo / chan based on their annihilation of sigit and flandy.

Maybe she has the chance to have Zhou Mi as sparring partner too. I think Malaysia really improve a lot in WS. With WMC, Julia Wong or maybe Lydia Cheah and hopefully Zhou Mi if possible in WS, plus WPT/CYH in WD. Maybe Malaysia could get a medal in Women teams events in Doha Asian Games.:D Even though Malaysia is unlikely to beat China and S. Korea in Doha Asian Games but who knows they may surprise Hong Kong, Japan or Chinese Taipei.

If BAM and Cheah Soon Kit can put in additional effort to train up a few pairs of WD which comparable to WPT/CYH ( would be even better if comparable to YW/ZJW or Gao Ling/Huang Sui), exactly as MD that Malaysia has six or seven pairs of world class MD, then, Mas should have an overall balance team in both Mens and Womens.:D

Beating Guo/Xie so easily should imply that they are in good form. Guo/Xie is not a great pair but definitely a good and able pair. They can beat all the current top pairs: Cai/Fu, E/L, Choong/Lee, etc. when in top form.

On the other hand, Malaysian MD performed badly in this tournament, so I guess they are not in top form. I guess Rexy has his plans.

If Tony/Candra can beat CCM/KKK, it seems they will for sure take the title. All the other 6 pairs are not as strong as CCM/KKK. Just remember how they comfortably beated Kido/Setiawan 2 months ago: the scores are kind of close sometimes, but K/S really had no chance to win.

Taufik seems to be going uphill. It's surprising to see that his stamina can last 70 mins. One or two months ago he would surely collapse in the 3rd game. If he keeps recovering, he would be formidable in the WC.

Just want to make a comment on the 2 INA's WD pairs. They've been the "surprise" so far for the INA's squad. Seems to me that they indeed had practice and prepared well for this tourney, albeit the absence of CHN's top pairs. Personally, i feel what they've accomplished by reaching the QF is pretty good. A spot in the SF will "basically" be a success for them. Just hope both pairs still have enough juice left for next week's HK Open.:p

Seems like Indonesian's men singles players are rolling down the hill real fast. Taufik is a HAS-BEEN. He certainly is a living legend now after he won Olympic and World Championship back to back, but that makes him "full". He is not hungry anymore so to speak. Worse still, PBSI still has not found the successor to Taufik. I am putting a lot of hopes on Simon, but it seems that he is not there yet. Hopefully he will become better and better soon. Indonesians and Taufik's fans, like me, will have to pray REAAAALLLLLYYYY HARD for the World Championship in Madrid.

Great news for Indonesian fans is the advance of two women doubles pair to the quarter-final. First time I have seen something like that happen in like, what, 5 years? Maybe more. Kido/Setiawan have done well too beating Laars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen. Hope they continue to do well in this tournament. They are one of our hopes in World Championship as well. I won't expect much from Luluk/Alven. They are a good pairs, but they lack something that gives fear to their opponent. I am really doubtful they are going to make it to the top ever.

actually Tony and his partner(former Pelatnas player Halim Haryanto), lost to another "senior" pair (http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=11775&draw=6) just last month at the Thailand Open..although it wasn't with Candra...
Speaking of the MD's QF match, the Kido/Setiawan vs. Jung/Lee should be a very entertaining one as well..As a matter of fact, Jung/Lee actually beat Tony/Halim in straight sets in the Macau Open, just after the recent Indonesian Open..:p

I think KKK/CCM will have good chance to win over veteran Chandra/Tony, two quite contrasting styles where Malaysian pair play with tremendous speed while Indonesia pair is more on net control and power smash. I think it's a 50-50 ball game.

Well only time will tell if he is a has-been.......I think he still is able to play at a level very few (if any) are/have been/will be capable of. The question is can he any longer do it at the right time as he did when winning his goldmedals?

Agree that he might not be that hungry anymore, but once again it is unkown how much he has "lost" in capacity. IMO few opponents will still be lucky to have 50/50 chance to beat him.

Predicted winners first

MD
He/Shen v Lindley/Langridge
Lee/Hwang v Yoo/Jeon
Jung/Lee v Kido/Setiawan
Tony/Candra v Koo/Chan (match of the day)

My feeling is that the best 4 pairs are in the bottom half. The top half looks very light indeed and seems like easy picking for Lee/Hwang.
I underestimated Tony/Candra yesterday. Now that I have a hint of their level, I think their match against Koo/Chan will be a good one. I think it's finely balanced, depends on who wants to win more on the day.
But my feeling tells me it will be an all-Korean final.

When I call someone an old dog, I don't mean it as an insult. An old dog is experienced and tenacious (another word for it is "dogged"). I can see how it can be perceived as an insult, with him being a muslim and all. If that is so, I take it back and let this be the last word on this matter.

 , "underestimated" them??wow..well, i understand this is their 2nd tourney playing together after 5-6 yrs. of both not playing together, but by the looks of things, and what they've accomplished so far with winning the recent Indonesia Open, they are surely in sync..
Usually, the winner or the outcome of a closely or tightly contested and skilled players will lie on which player(s)/pair makes more self-errors(so it's all in the head and mindset)..And I doubt all four players will come unprepare and unmotivated, esp. not Tony and Candra..;)

As can be seen here, Roslin has been predicted to lose..aiyaaa..dunno wut to say la..give him support la..
Do remember that..he was :
1) Ex world Number 1
2) Unbeatable 3rd single in Thomas Cup 1998
3) Able to beat higher ranks player than him.
E.x Sun Jun (1st rank at that time) 1997 i guess
Peter Gade..most of their encounters
4) Solid in defensive style

Therefore, give him support & let him prove himself..coz one thing for sure
he's much experience and better than Kuan Beng Hong (ultimate loser i guess)..if only la he plays in Thomas Cup as third single (semi against denmark)..maybe Malaysia will meet China in the finals. In addition, we might be able to bring back the precious cup to malaysia..who knows..!! :-)

Don't confuse prediction with support. I will always support Malaysians against other players, but prediction-wise we should try to be neutral. For Roslin, I will be happy if my prediction is wrong.

On this note, I also notice that some posters make predictions exclusively in favour of their fellow countrymen only. Technically, you cannot call them predictions, more like wishful thinking.

Who would have thought, at semifinal stage, the only singles players left for Malaysia are Wong MC and Roslin. Incredible. I think Roslin has an even chance against Shon, while for MC, I will give her a 40% chance against Zhu Lin.

HASHIM Roslin has beaten LEE Chong Wei(1*), PARK Sung Hwan (9/16*) & CHEN Yu(5/8*) to reach the semi of korea open.
Shon Seung Mo has beaten SMITH Andrew(9/16*), JONASSEN Kenneth
(3/4*) & PONSANA Boonsak(5/8*) to reach the semi of korea open.
So i think tommorows Semifinals between these two is going to be a triller.

I think it's not a matter of mental strength or focus, at least not yet. Basically, we're just physically not at the level of the top Chinese WD. Mental strength only matters when their opponents are their equals.

Even Chin/Wong is an anomaly. The second Malaysian WD does not even come near.

However, I do think Chin/Wong is a top ten pairing, and for that, I am glad enough. For now.

hmm, i have mixed feeling of surprises..Wasn't surprise Tony/Candra pulled it out, albeit in a 3 setters..But somewhat surprise to see Markis/Hendra pulled it out vs. the KOR's #1 pair...The victory by the latter pair shows that perhaps they "have arrive" and become INA #1 MD pair to contend with..
On that note, tomorrow's match between the junior INA Pelatnas vs. their senior counterparts should be another interesting match; it could go 3 setters as well..Let's see if the juniors have learned anything from their recent defeat against their seniors at the Indonesia Open..:p

Think on the positive side, KKK/CCM have gotten a valuable sparring lesson from two great players. Although the Malaysians lost to Chandra/Tony but they know they are within the same level as this great pair. I wish other younger Malaysia pairs have more exposure in playing against great pairs from other nations. It's not about winning and losing rather what knowledge/experience do you gain from those matches.
As for Wong Miew Choo, I am so happy for her as she has been such a hard worker with average results until now, I think have Zhou Mi as sparring partner has helped tremendously. Why not hire Zhou Mi as sparring coach as Malaysia does have pretty decent women team now with Wong Miew Choo, Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah(Junior), should be no problem advance to Group A in Uber cup with the help of Zhou Mi.(I am sure Li Yongbo will send another warning to Zhou Mi if this come thru but why even care about the conflict of interest express by coach Li as Zhou Mi also need to making a living like anyone else)
As for Roslin, well done and should include him in the Asian Games squad.

Roslin should be included in the Asian Games squad. He beat Korean third singles Park Sung Hwan at his home ground prove that he is reliable as Malaysian third singles (or fourth singles if Wong CH is selected). With LCW and Hashim brothers in MS and KKK/CCM and LWW/CTF in MD, Malaysia should be a strong contender in Doha Asian Games Mens Team Events.:D
