Predicted winners on the left
MS
Shon SM v Roslin
Lee HI v Bao CL
Both matches are finely balanced, but homeground advantage may just tip it. I hope this won't be so as an all-Korean final will be anti-climatic. It could very well be Roslin v Bao in the final.
WS
Xu HW v Lu Lan
Zhu Lin v Wong MC
Another two that are finely balanced. I only hope it won't be all-Chinese. What does it say about the state of affairs if the best players in the world are here with the exception of the top Chinese ladies, and still the final is all-Chinese?
MD
(QF not yet completed)
WD
Yang/Zhang v Nurlita/Poluakan
Lee/Lee v Novita/Polii
Indonesians did very well to reach this stage but can't see them getting past the top brass.
XD
Widianto/Natsir v Laybourn/Juhl
Lee/Lee v Eriksen/Schjoldager
Another two good matches.
For MS, I think Roslin has enough fire to burn Shon, even on Shon's homeground, but Bao may again lose. LHI is very strong currently.
For WS, it looks like the 2 Chinese girls are stronger, but WCM may still have a chance.

I feel sad the other way :crying: :crying: :crying:
Since Chandra/Tony still so good, how come they have to split to make the badminton MD level for the whole world down in the past 6 years? They are so good, but cannot play together, which made all the champions in the past years meaningless. :crying: :crying: :crying:
So it'd better to name all the winners during that time as the winners without Chandra/Tony participation

I hope SSM vs BCL. if not that then LHI vs Roslin. I really like both Korean players. I really, really hope SSM is starting to get good again! I will never forget when I saw him lose to Amir Gaffar at WC 2005 in Anahiem, I felt soo bad for him! At the same time I was dissapointed though.
SSM and Shoji Sato are probably my favorite underdogs of all time. (is KJ considered an underdog?)

they *could be*, but even if they do beat their senior counterparts in the SF, that doesn't mean they are *now* INA #1 MD...they've still got a long ways to go, as their max. ceiling potential is still open, before they can call themselves the next INA's MD "great", as they have to prove themselves they can sustain or play consistently tournaments in and tournaments out.. ;)

Yeah, agreed if u call someone chinese player, it could be Malaysian Chinese, Singaporean Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, American Chinese, or chinese frm China itself..
So u might wanna consider calling them as CHN player, which is more convenient for us...

I'm torn apart here in MD. Both are from Indonesia. Although I idolize Candra/Tony, I will also like it if Kido/Setiawan can beat them. Then it is a good sign for Indonesian's badminton overall progress. So this time I will root for Kido/Setiawan. A lot are being said about Kido/Setiawan being ready for the #1 Indonesian pair. I totally agree. Luluk/Alven is finished. They have hit the ceiling. Time to shove their ass out of the door. I don't enjoy watching them playing at all especially Luluk. He will make the same mistakes over and over and over again in one set. However, Kido/Setiawan still have a lot to learn before they can enter the Hall of Fames of Greatest Indonesian Men Doubles Pairs. They have the potential, but they still have to learn a lot. One of the very first step they can take is to beat Candra/Tony.
No question in XD, I'm definitely rooting for Widianto/Natsir. Show them that you are the REAL CHAMPION!!
WD is hard as well. Technically and logically, the Indonesian pairs have something like 1% chance to beat their opponent, but miracle(s) do happen, right? If they win, I'm gonna hold a big party here in Creston! So go INDONESIA!!!!

gotta be kidding me..you mean the KOR pair Lee/Lee withdrew??...wow, if that's the case, what a lucky break for the INA ladies..
Yup, just checked the scoreboard, and it's confirmed. For some reason the KOR pair suffered an injury, right at the interval point with the INA ladies leading 11:9...Unbelievable!!...well, i guess they'll be facing most likely the CHN pair in the Final....good luck ladies-;):p :)

well, as expected, Tony & Candra, for all intents and purposes will be the new KO MD winner. It's a good sign for the young INA pair, as they've given it all they've got by winning the 1st set & even pushing Tony&Candra to the brink of elimination, barely losing the 2nd set by the slimmest of margin. I thought losing that set really took its toll in the 3rd set..:p
Too bad, but i think the young INA pair also learn another valuable lesson...Perhaps next time those 4 players meet, it could be "3rd time's the charm" for Kido/Setiawan..;)

i havent watch that MD match yet but i would guess to say tony and candra were handicapped by
- not played together very much since the olden days, therefore, synergy wouldn't be as good as kido/Setiawan who practiced and played together alot more.
- i wouldnt say tony G is in top form.
- kido/Setiawan prolly watched alot of tony and candra games before(tapes), where as the reverse is not.
1st and 2nd were close because young team usually start off explosively from their built up energy and aggression to win. Experience pairs like tony and candra knows that. If there were such thing as best of 5, or 7 games, the match wouldn't look that close when tony/candra keep on clicking like the 3rd game.

Finally managed to get into the net after 4 days....and what a surprise tournament it has been. Team Indonesia manages to place at least 2 finalists with a potential title in Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir. They have been unstoppable so far and only an in-form Nathan Roberson/Gail Emms, Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen or Zhang Jun/Gao Ling stand between them and another WC title in Madrid. Next week will be interesting...
Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan have exceeded my expectation in progressing beyond the quarter-final with yet another defeat at the hands of the senior pair Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya. I think Tony/Candra are going to win the title now.
Enough said about Luluk/Alvent...what a shocking defeat at the hands of an unknown England pair.
The WD pairs have been the suprise of the tournament so far. Jo Novita/Gresya Polii have confirmed their rise as one of the possible top 5 pairs by beating arch-rival Chien/Cheng. Lita Nurlita/Nathalia Poluakan also have their best tournament so far with a semi-final spot. It will be a miracle if either of these 2 pairs can beat reigning WC Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen..but..hey..we have seen these surprises happening this week.
Thats all from me for now...I will be flying back to SG tomorrow morning Zurich time.

I think the match in afternoon is over.
the next 4 matches will be go on at night.(i think LEE, Hyo Jung maybe injured, no mix double at night)At 11-9 for Korea in the women's doubles, Lee Hyo-jung started holding her left lower back and seemed to be in a lot of pain. They tried spraying a kind of aerosol linement on it but she said she couldn't continue. About an hour later, we got word that she had to bow out of the mixed doubles as well, denying the crowd a reply of the 2005 Korea Open final.

The style WMC employs doesn't set up well for a long run in tournaments. She seems to squeak by in every match and many are energy draining 3-gamers. By the time she gets to the latter rounds, she's running low on gas. Not surprisingly in this KO, she went down tamely in the SF, not to say she would have won. I think with some reserves in the tank, she should be able to give a better account for herseelf. By all accounts though, she's done very well after a long international layoff.

If you have chance to see how WMC play then you know why her play is such energy demanding. WMC doesn't have any tricks and deceptive moves so she rely a lot of hard running and hitting to keep herself in the games so every match for her is a long fight battle. Having Zhou Mi as sparring partner will help in sharpen her anticipation hence conserve some energy(hopefully). I am not sure you can teach deceptive moves to WMC as she is not that type of player. Li Mau must be scratching his hair(not much left anyway) trying to figure out how to push MC to next level. One thing I think Miew Choo can try is to mix her game with low drives like double ...

Yes, I have seen her play and I agree, she's a very one dimensional player. She's essentially a rabbit on the court. If you've seen those new American Express ads on TV with Andy Roddick playing tennis against PONG, well, WMC is like PONG. She just returns everything without doing anything special. Hopefully with more guidance from Li Mao and Zhou Mi, she can position herself better on the court and optimize her anticipation thus conserving energy. One thing we can't argue, she's got heart.

Thats all from me for now...I will be flying back to SG tomorrow morning Zurich time.
badMania, yah, i knew you would be a bit surprise..well, actually the INA pair of Polii/Novita were lucky, but they will have their work cut out for them in the Final..:p :)
On that note, have a safe trip back to S'pore and looking fw to you coverage and previews of the upcoming HK Open..boy, you're really traveling this 2 weeks, heh..:p;)
