View Full Version : Interview with Tony/Candra after against Chan/Koo in QF Match
jiayou 08-26-2006, 10:15 AM Tony & Candra interviewed by Edwin Leung :
Tony, could you say a few words and comments of today match?
Tony: We were a bit tired in the second set. I am happy to win this match, as i havn't play the malaysian pair before, they are really fast and attacking is strong, hence we try to kept attacking and drive all the time, on the 3rd set they seems a bit nervous and make some error, hence we won the last few points luckily.
How about your performance compare to your top?
Tony: 80% compare to my best performance for today, while yesterday is a bit weaker. Today I play better than yesterday.
What do you think re the match tomorrow?
Tony: Yes, I hope we are getting better and better, I have confidence to play more better than today.
Candra, please give a short comment about the match.
Candra: I could say 80% performance to my best performance, today I play better than yesterday.
Have you play with the malay pair before?
Candra: I have partner with Sigit and have played against them before, but with Tony this is the first time.
Is this the first time you play again with Tony after so many years?
Candra: No, we partner in this year Indonesia Open, this is my second time, next week Hong Kong Open the 3rd time.
Will you move to USA like Tony?
Candra: No, I retired from playing in PBSI this year, and I am working for a company in Indonesia. I will return to Indo afterwards.

deROSE 08-26-2006, 11:35 AM Tony looks a little bit like chinese but chandra doesn't really....
If IBF know how to market the sports of Badminton then Chandra/Tony should be invited as wild card in coming World championship.

badmad 08-26-2006, 01:17 PM Tony looks a little bit like chinese but chandra doesn't really....
same here... I too think that Candra is not of chinese descent. his looks are too indonesian look.
byelnats 08-26-2006, 02:34 PM Actually Candra and Tony are of Chinese descent. Just like Hendrawan and Alan Budikusuma or Halim Haryanto. It is true that Chinese (mainland and overseas or descendants) seem to dominate the badminton world. Indonesia's Great, Rudi Hartono and Liem Swee King are Chinese descent.

Pardon me, I don't know much about Indonesian names or population structures, but neither 'Candra Wijaya' nor 'Tony Gunawan' seems to be a Chinese name, is it? In fact the former is actually a quite common Indian name. So why are you 100% sure that they are of Chinese ancestry? Where did they get these "foreign" names from?
cappy75 08-26-2006, 02:58 PM You're asking questions that are verging on political history and politics of Indonesia. The country adopted a national policy in the past to have every citizen regardless of ethnicity to adopt an Indonesian name. Search the forum for more treads on Candra Wijaya. You'll come up with many useful references;).

Xaviman 08-26-2006, 10:39 PM what about the ibf ranking points of the doubles player who play with differents Accompanists??
cooler 08-26-2006, 10:47 PM how come candra is able to represent USA so soon?

not only i am sure they are chinese but also sure they have chinese name as well, but rarely use it especially in indonesia.
I am similar to them, have chinese name also, but seldom use it, if you ask indonesian (esp. indon chinese), they will know about this, cos very common.
as cappy75 mentioned, it's more related to national policy.

FYI :
Candra Wijaya = Chen Jia Liang 陈甲亮
Tony Gunawan = Wu Jun Ming 吴俊明
because of politics in 60er in Indonesia
jamesd20 08-27-2006, 04:57 AM how come candra is able to represent USA so soon?
He isn't representing USA, he was entered + reccommended for entry under the national association of USA, which any player can be reccomended and entered for any country.
Only TC/UC/SC/WC/OG are actually representing the country you enter under.
taufik-ist 08-27-2006, 06:37 AM yes 100%, they are
they are chinese - javanese mixture :), u can see from thier 'dialect'

I am sure Badminton become more popular than beforeBelieve me, I was looking for a chance to ask Punch about that today but he didn't have the time to sit around and chat like on previous days. Medal ceremonies and all. I'm sure he would have smelled from a mile away my intention to get something on the rumour mill. I'm sure he would have laughed it off or just said "no". I wish it could happen though. I'd like to see Tony & Candra take on the world again like in Sydney.
Sorry guys. I spend 7 days on the inside and come out with zero inside information. Just a few out-of-focus pictures. I fear I've failed you.

..it's under a different topic header, but if you read from post #16 onwards, it'll tell a "rough" history behind it :http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38637
Btw, yes, Wijaya and Gunawan are Indonesian names. However, both of them are of chinese ancestry/descent:Tony Gunawan's chinese name is Wu Junming and Candra Wijaya's chinese name is Chen Jialiang..;)
