..Hmm, looking at their results since the beginning of the yr, esp. after the "disaster" at the Uber Cup, i don't know what's going on with the JPN #1 WD pair...I don't know if injuries are a factor, but for some reason, they seemed to be "maxing" out as a pair, in comparison to last yr's performance; and all of this since PJB came in to be their coach?!?!..They're still quite young, but perhaps a change in partnership is a consideration or bringing in a new coach??...

BTW, red00ecstrat, thanks for the 2nd day pics..

hmm, what do you mean by "unusual"??..is it the case of players from different countries playing as a pair??..I believe since it is an Open tournament, any player(s) from any country(ies) can pair up with each other (ie. see Tony G. and Minarti Timur currently paired up in the XD field, or if you remember Tony G. paired up with a Taiwanese player(Cheng Wen Hsing??) in the recent Taipei Open).. ;)

I believe Mr. Shirley's previous partner, Sarah Rune-Petersen(both of whom had reached the Semifinals of the WC last yr), had quit the NZ team and gone back to her native country of Denmark. I believe she mentioned that plan earlier in the yr or late last yr(sorry don't quite remember). I don't know if he had gotten a new partner, but if not probably that's the new/temporary partnership for Mr. Shirley..;)

a lesser known player. Still can improve a lot on the psychological aspect. Not sure if he's really listening to his coach. Although he won, he doesn't seem to be concentrating that well. Maybe too confident of a win. But I think it's askill that needs to be practiced otherwise, when you're under pressure ina higher level match, it's difficult to make the shots.

Unfortunately, I am still tied up in Singapore due to some personal matters...and it's increasingly unlikely for me to return back to HKG before the semi-finals. I do hope to return back on Friday in time to catch the semis and finals

Meanwhile, I just have to be contented with watching the Singapore Satelitte later this afternoon.

Cheung, thank you so much for your pictures. Just a very technical question: the corners of most of your photos taken are darker than that of Red's. Is it issue of equipment?

Sure, you should Cheung..;)...get to know her better..;):)
No, really, eventhough she's not as fluent or comfortable in English, i knew she's able to converse in English because i actually experienced it myself on 2 occasions. And both happened at last yr's World Championships.
1. First, it was the days before it officially began. I was helping out in the tournament's official hotel(tournament's desk) and noticed many players going in and out and up and down the elevators. One morning i noticed she was about to go to breakfast when a couple of Japanese people appeared, I guess they're related to the JPN players, and approached me. Both of them were trying to look for a JPN player, but unfortunately they couldn't speak nor understand English and vice versa, so i was quite baffled. Knowing i'm in a bit of a quandry, out of nowhere Ms. Yonekura appeared, as usual smiling and greeted other players. I then quickly called her before she was gone and asked her if she can help the 2 Japanese people. In my initial conversation with her, i noticed she can understand what i was inquiring and vice versa. Soon after she whisked those 2 Japanese people with her to the dining area.
2. Another occasion occurred also at the World Championship. But at that time, i wasn't involved. It happened when i was down at the back area where the players were coming in and out. At that time, i was about to meet some INA players, when i noticed Ms. Yonekura was talking to a couple of people, also conversing in English. I didn't know what they were talking abt, but i didn't notice any translator beside her.

but Mr. Shirley has his regular xd partner from new zealand. Maybe she wasn't available or injured.

Shirley undecided about his badminton future
08 August 2006
By JONATHAN MILLMOW

Daniel Shirley will put thoughts of retirement in the background for a few hours tonight when New Zealand clash with Singapore in a badminton test in Palmerston North.

The world-class doubles player has lost both his mixed and men's partners this year and he admits it has forced him to weigh up his options.

Shirley and Sara Runesten Petersen were ranked as high as No 8 in the world but Runesten Petersen has retired and returned to Denmark.

His men's partner, John Gordon, has only just started hitting again after damaging an Achilles tendon in February and time is against him being sharp enough for next month's world championships in Madrid.

"It is a tough situation to be in at the moment," Shirley said. "Since the Commonwealth Games I've been deciding what to do with my badminton. I gave myself a couple of months to make a decision but it's been so hard because it's been such a big part of my life.

"I need to make a decision pretty soon."

Shirley, 27, is full of praise for his new partners, Renee Flavell in the mixed doubles and Craig Cooper in the men's. However, the facts remain he may struggle to be as competitive overseas with them. Shirley and Flavell won a tournament in Australia a fortnight ago but struggled with a tough draw in the New Zealand Open last weekend.

Shirley expects New Zealand to test a weakened Singapore tonight and in the following two tests, in Wellington on Thursday and Auckland on Friday. Singapore's top women's singles player Li Li and top men's doubles exponent Hendri Saputra both returned home yesterday.

Meanwhile, New Zealand is expected to host next year's world junior championships.

They are likely to be held in November at Trust Stadium in Waitakere.

"It's looking good but we don't want to speak too soon," Badminton New Zealand boss Peter Dunne said.

Are the corners dark? If so, it's should only be the 1st and 3rd shots with our HK player. I think those were with the 17-55/2.8 USM
Except the time when Spitko is being told off by the umipre. I cropped that one and the 4th shot. I can't really notice any light fall off in any of the other shots. got mew choo`s photo?????? I do, I do...except I have some technical problems at the moment. Try to resolve them tonight. First time I seen her play. Although she won, I don't think she can win with that style of play. She has a knee injury before and her style is quite stressful for that knee (rally, rally style)

Those pictures were taken with a Canon 20D with 70-200mm F2.8L, 50mm F1.4, 17-40mm F4L. I was using manual mode all the time and shooting in continues mode. Only when he moves position. Say most of the shots are from afar, then he'll use the 70-200 lens.

When he gets to near court, he'll use the 50 or the 17-40 lens. 70-200 that close by would be difficult to use. It's not like during one match he'll be running up and downstairs 10 times. Mind you, if he could do that, then I would think he would be able to chase the shots I give him when we play together;) hehe

Tony and Minarti get a lot of respect but they just can't quite keep up with the pace.

This 1st pic of Tony is out of focus. Ohh, but what an amazing shot. He was standing on the right side of the court receiving a straight smash. He did a backhand return and directing it cross court to his left side. The Thais were left standing. The crowd gave a "uhhh" of appreciation for that shot.

Playing back at home is not easy with all the expectations. Look at the desperate disappointment after losing. The bag is practically dragged open across the court at the end of the match.

All those WMC fans had to wait so long for this:o

Cheung, you're an expert photographer now! Did you use the same equipment as Red? Your pics come out much darker and stronger in colour.

If you want more tips from Red, don't make him run too much on the court1
