View Full Version : Cheers Asian Satellite 2006, Singapore
I spent a tiring whole day yesterday to witness the Asian Satellite Badminton Championships 2006 Round 1 held at the new venue, the air-conditioned Toa Payoh Sports Hall.
This venue is certainly much more comfortable than the Singapore Badminton Hall, where all the previous Satellites were held, not only because the airconditioning at TPSH makes a great difference but also its high ceiling lights do not block the view as they do at SBH, even worse as the low fluorescent lights there really hurt the eye.
The seating capacity at TPSH is larger and the seats are better arranged in a circular pattern but without backs for support. There are no pillars blocking one's view as in SBH. The one setback, however is the high aluminium railings surrounding the gallery to prevent one from falling over. This should have been set lower or better still, in transparent plate glass, so as not to disturb one's viewing pleasure. The SBH is good for training players but certainly not good for the spectators!
This Satellite is meant for the young and upcoming players, the national second teams, to ply their talents and pit them against equally gifted players in the region. In general the standard has improved but so far I could not see any outstanding candidates yet. Maybe they will display their style later in the competition.
For the first time, I met Magical Phoenix and moonsilk in the morning. MP was there to support Chong Wei Feng #11 and all the other Malaysian players on behalf of yannie. :) And moonsilk gave support to the Thai contingent although their first team was not around, competing in the HK Open. During the XD event in the evening, I met Iwan and we had a good chat. But I could not see badMania.
Round 1
Men's Singles
This event saw two early seeded casualties - Beryno Wong (MAS), #9, fell to Adnan Fauzi (INA) in 3 games lasting 55 min. Compatriot Kenn Lim, #8, was rudely pushed aside in straight games by Pakkawat Vilailk (THA) in 35 min. Erwin Djohan (SIN), seeded 3, did not appear.:(
Ten out of 32 matches lasted the distance in three games, but all were completed in less than an hour each match.
Daren Liew (MAS), #5, almost lost to Wisnu Haryo Putro (INA), 13-21, 21-17, 22-20 in another record 55 min. Another close shave was Raj Popat (WAL) #15, who was extended by 'tiny' Singapore Sports School challenger, Febriyan Irvannaldy, 18-21, 21-17, 21-18 in 53 min. Filipino Ben Jonas Garcia put up a brave fight against unseeded Johnathan Tan (SIN) 21-19, 14-21, 13-21 in 45 min. And Azrihanif Azahar (MAS) #10, stayed on court for another 45 min before ousting Chia Y Lun (TPE) 21-12, 18-21, 21-16.
Today's Straits Times featured a writeup on Tommy Sugiarto and Derek Wong and was hoping for a match between these two sons whose fathers, Icuk Sugiarto and Wong Shoon Keat met in 1983 SEAP Games with the latter beating Icuk in first singles to claim team gold for Singapore. But with Tommy seeded 2 for this event, it is impossible for Derek to create another upset like his father.
Women's Doubles
The Malaysians dominated, especially when playing against their Singapore counterparts. Only unseeded China-born Zhang Beiwen & Gu Juan were able to stop Chong Sook Chin and Tan Sin Lan, 19-21, 21-19, 21-14 in 55 min. But the Malaysian pairs had to submit to their Indonesian and Thai opponents in two other matches. All the seeded pairs received byes in R1.
The Swiss pair of Caren Hueckstaedt and Huwaina Razi were impressive in defeating Singapore Sport School's Valerie Wang and Noriko Goh, 21-14, 21-12 in 25 min.
Clearly Singapore's women's doubles department is lacking in attention and there is a lot of work to bring them nearer the standards of their ASEAN counterparts. ;)
Men's Doubles
Two seeded pairs fell along the wayside. Arolas Jr. Amahit/Wilson Frias (PHI) #6 lost to Singapore's Daniel Yudi Kurniawan/Bagus Suprobo (probably new Indonesian imports) 11-21, 9-21 in just 20 min. And Malaysia's Goh Ying Jin/Au Kok Leong #5, were defeated by Indonesia's Ahsan/Bona Septano 15-21, 13-21 in 25 min. There were 16 matches compared to the 32 for MS and only 4 matches went into rubber.
Try as they might, the Singapore pair of Derek Wong/Johnathan Tang just could not break the Malaysian combination of Lok Chong Chieh/Chan Kwong Beng. After wining the first game 21-18, Derek and Johnathan lost the second with a similar margin and they also failed in the rubber, going down 11-21 in 40 min.
Mixed Doubles
This will be reported separately. :D
I will upload some pics for the MS. Enjoy! :)
kokcheng 08-30-2006, 01:56 AM what an extensive coverage?Superb write-outs and photos.Thanks a lot,Loh.
The Thai badminton team must be the world's most honoured. For which team in the world has the privilege of being 'escorted' by a Thai Princess and even joins them in pitting her skills against others?
So, Thais who are residing in Singapore arrived in droves to give their full hearted support to the Princess and the small stadium suddenly became alive with the waving of tiny colourful Thai flags and spontaneous cheering from the supporters
HRH Princess Srivannavarinarinatana partnered Nattapon Naktong in the Mixed Doubles in her workout against Malaysia's Mak Hee Chun and Sanatasah Saniru. Although the Princess and Nattapon lost, she captured the imagination and appreciation of all present. Her discipline on court and her show of humbleness thereafter was a delight to watch.
Here are some pictures for the memory.
ctjcad 08-30-2006, 02:37 AM Loh,
I know it's a small tourney consisting of juniors and upcoming players, but thanks for the brief review and photos. BTW, is the tournament you're covering different than the other Singapore Satellite tourney's thread??....Maybe the admin/mods can merge the 2 threads together??..
Here are some pics of the young participants:
Loh,

I observe that this year's satellite is named differently. To give credit to, and to appreciate the contributions of, the sponsors and organisers, their chosen name for the championships is thus reflected accordingly. My post is also to make it easier for me to post the pics separately. There will be more pics if I have time to attend the other rounds.
This tourney may not be as prestigious as the IBF Opens, but it is run professionally with an updated website, better than some of the higher ranked tourneys in terms of information, scores and results. Not only are SBA officials in attendance but umpires from neighbouring countries are also present. Even Olympic bronze medalist, Rashid Sidek, is here as coach to the Malaysian team. An ideal preparation for the young professionals aspiring to greater heights. ;)
Here are some pics taken of the WD matches during Round 1:
Nice pics loh.. keep it up.
yannie 08-30-2006, 07:45 AM Erwin Djohan (SIN), seeded 3, did not appear.:(
Thanks a bunch, Loh! For the write-up and wonderful pics!
This stadium seems to be much much much larger than those used for junior tournaments in Denmark!
Erwin is currently injured, his leg sprained... hope he will recover soon.
It looks like the unseeded Indonesia pairs are creating havoc on the seedings.
In R1, Suryatama Yonathan/Nadya Melati overcame Malaysians Lim Khim Wah/Goh Liu Ying #4 21-18, 16-21, 26-24 and apparently went on to defeat Arolas Jr. Amahit/Therine Thristie Chan, 21.13, 21-11 today in R2. to gain a place in the QF.
Then another Indonesian pair, Tantowi/Yulianti, created another major upset by beating Malaysia's #1, Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khe Wai, 21-13, 21-17 in R2 to proceed to the QF. They must have got their inspiration from Nova and Natsir!
The following pictures complete my quota for all the events in Round 1:
storkbill 08-30-2006, 09:24 AM I second Loh's observation that it's very well organised and professionally run with up to date results on the website. Got aircon somemore and next to HDB hub and plenty of restaurants :)
One player I took noticed was the Thai WS player Sitee P.... because I heard the familiar sound of an AT800OFF being smashed I turned to see who it was and it was this pint sized little girl smashing away. But the AT800OFF is unforgiving and you can hear clearly when she mishits :) Anyway, she beat Zhang Beiwen and is into the quarters against the No.1 seed Julia Wong

Definitely better than the supposedly 6* HK Open  The updates for the HK Open are frustratingly slow. BTW, were you in TPSH today?

From what storkbill has written, he is obviously present and I chose the wrong day to rest, missing you and him! :crying:

yup, but only for a short while as had other stuff to do... would love to watch the whole or even half a day but time not enough :)
elwin81 08-30-2006, 10:25 AM thank you very much Loh for the report.
Nice pic from Rashid as I haven't seen him for many years already.
magical_phoenix 08-30-2006, 11:20 AM Thanks Loh for the wonderful pics!! And also the writeup too. Hope to see you more in action! Are u going again??
badMania 08-30-2006, 11:22 AM thank you very much Loh for the report.
Nice pic from Rashid as I haven't seen him for many years already.
I bumped into Rashid when he + another coach were lecturing Tan Chun Sheang (the no 4 seed) after the youngster suprisingly lost his match to an unseeded Thai player this evening  I also saw him at the Singapore Indoor stadium in early June during the Aviva Singapore Open 2006.

i see, thanks again for the info, Loh...BTW, do you know the max. age of these young players competing in the CASS??thx.. :)
Cheung 08-30-2006, 01:12 PM Loh, how close can you get to the court for photos? Are they very strict about your seating position? There seems a good number of people in the audience.
How about your camera settings? Were you on ISO1600? There's a lot of noise in the photos.

I knew Rashid is coaching loads of younster under 2010-2012 project. I haven't see him personally for ages already. Quite miss him.
I think I can only see him when his players are playing. Most of it is not major tournaments.

I'm afraid I couldn't get close to the players and I took my pics from the highest level (L3) just close to the railing, opposite the crowded area. It is quite a distance from the main action and the lights are not bright enough, I suspect.
Even with a tripod, some of my pics came out blur. None of them was as sharp. And my DSLR is actually quite noisy, maybe it needs servicing.
I haven't tried using the manual mode as I am not competent enough. So I used the "Progam" mode on my Nikon D70, set to ISO1600 and "under direct sunlight" instead of "shade" as the latter seems to produce a yellowish tint on my pics and make them look darker.
Not the best of conditions, but the pics turn out quite OK, certainly not perfect unfortunately. ;)

From my personal assessment, the players are as young as 15 or 16 and as old as 23 or 24, with the exception of that couple from Egypt. You will notice from the XD pic that the lady even wear longs to play, perhaps for religious reason. Her partner seems to be well over 30, possibly the coach for the Egypt contingent. Maybe they intend to take a holiday in the region and sign up for the tourney at the same time. :D
It would appear that they do not set a min and max age.

Hi Elwin, yes I think Rashid is shouldering quite a heavy responsibility in preparing Malaysia's youngsters for major competitions like the Asian and Olympic Games.
I'm sure you're looking forward to the Madrid WC. But what are you doing in Robin Hood county, studying for a higher degree? :D
Wish I could join you in Madrid! :)
Cheung 08-30-2006, 11:30 PM Thanks Loh. ISO 1600 explains the noise. Kwun's experience is the D70 is noisy at this level. Try setting to tungsten light if you have a yellow twinge.
Try setting to Aperture priority and use the maximum aperture possible that your lens allows. Shooting with aperture priority is what I'm doing know.

Wow, Loh....u got a really good camera. How wish I can have my own DSLR.
I do hope Rashid's project goes pretty well as I would like to see this youngster in major tournament in the future. Can't wait............
Yes, I can't wait for my holiday in Madrid in few weeks time. Are you certain that you can't join us this year? It seems u have been to my place or u are a robin hood's fans? I finished my undergradaute degree 2 years ago and I'm doing a PhD now.
badMania 08-31-2006, 11:11 AM Here's my second writeup on the Singapore Satelitte 2006.
I arrived just in time to watch the closing stages of the XD quarter-final matches. Tantowi/Yulianti edged out their compatriot Frans Kurniawan/Nitya Krishinda 21-19, 23-21; while Lingga/Devi Tika Permatasari beat Yonathan Suryatama/Nadya Melati 21-17, 21-17. Tantowi/Lingga will meet Ong Jien Guo/Amelia Alicia Ancelly and Lingga/Devi Tika will square up against the local favorite Koh Yan Sen/Vanessa Neo Yu Yan in the semi-finals tomorrow.
I met up with Loh and wasn't paying much attention to the WS matches. Anyway, Gu Juan beat Melicia Kurniawan quite easily 21-9, 21-9. She will meet the no 1 seed Julia Wong Pei Xian. Indonesia's only representive in the semi-final tomorrow is Maria Kristin Yulianti, who beat her compatriot Maria Elvira Christina 21-5, 21-18. Her opponent will be Shinta Mulia Sari who unexpectedly beat the no 2 seed Xing Aiying 21-16, 5-21, 21-13.
Three of the MS matches went into rubber-set. The attention of the home crowd was of course directed towards the match between the no 1 seed Jeffer Rosobin and the upcoming Singaporean player Derek Wong Zi Liang. Derek was fast and furious in taking the first set 21-18. However, he committed too many unforced errors in the second set with at least 10 of the points gifted to Jeffer because of his out return. He lost the second set 11-21 and was unable to give much resistance to Jeffer as the experienced Indonesian player wrapped up the third set 21-13. Jeffer will play the Thai youngster Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the semi-final, who impressed me in his victory over Indra Bagus.
As for the other 2 matches (which I did not really pay attention to), Darren Liew and Andreas Adityamarwan won their matches against their fellow compatriots Chong Wei Feng and Fauzi Adnan respectively despite losing the first set. They will meet each other tomorrow. Serla came into the stadium just in time to watch Weifeng play but too bad...her idol lost :D
Then, the MD and WD matches began. the no 2 seed Frans Kurniawan/Rendra Wijaya were again impressive as they beat their compatriot Mohd Ahsan/Bona Septano 21-14, 21-14. They will have a tough match against the no 4 seed Malaysian pair Mohd Arif Latif/Vountus Indra Mawan who beat Peerasak Wirayapadungpong/Kovit Phisetsesarasi in two tight sets 21-19, 21-18.
The last match of the night featured the no 1 seed Yoga Ukikasah/Yonathan Suryatama against the no 8 seed Chan Peng Soon/Chang Hun Ping and Yoga Yonathan won 21-17, 22-20. They were down 20-17 in the second set, before taking 5 consecutive points to win the match. They will also have another tough match against the no 3 seed Koo Chung Kiat/Abdul Latif Mohd Razif.
In the WD, the no 1 seed Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati were hardly troubled as they beat Zhang Beiwen/Gu Juan 21-10, 21-14. Their opponent will be the no 3 seed Vanessa Neo Yu Yan/Shinta Mulia Sari who thrashed their opposition 21-5, 21-12 in just 20 mins. The other semi-final will feature the no 2 seed Yao Lei/Fu Mingtian against Puspa Shendy/Devi Tika Permatasari. Puspa/Devi struggled to beat Lim Yin Loo/Haw Chiou Hwee in three tight sets 21-18, 19-21, 21-19. There were plenty of long rallies with smashes and returns from both pairs. The Malaysians were particularly impressive with their defense. They were leading 19-17 in the rubber set but again, the Indonesian pair proved to be better as they took the last 5 points and won the match which lasted nearly an hour.
So, 9 of the 10 semi-final matches tomorrow will feature Indonesian players. Unfortunately, I don't think I will attend the semi-finals tomorrow due to the live telecast of the HK Open.
magical_phoenix 08-31-2006, 11:36 AM Here's my second writeup on the Singapore Satelitte 2006.
How come u're so happy Weifeng lost! Grrr!! Hahaha. Anyway, he's not my idol, he's my friend *faint!! Anyway, "nice" to see you today badMania! Hahaha
badMania 08-31-2006, 11:46 AM Again from Bola:
The Singapore Satelitte is supposed to be Maria Kristin's test if she is to remain in Pelatnas next year. She is scheduled to compete in 3 Satelittes starting from the Singapore Satelitte this week, JPGG Surabaya Satelitte next week and the Malaysia Satelitte (21-26 Nov). Technically, she is supposed to win at least one of the tournaments! She will have 2 tough matches coming up if she is to win...against Shinta Mulia Sari tomorrow and possibly Julia Wong Pei Xian on Saturday. A victory here will definitely boost her morale.
She's also seeded no 2 for next week's JPGG Surabaya Satelitte but with Pia Zebadiah's participation (as the no 4 seed), her chance of winning next week is not promising...
Wow, Loh....u got a really good camera. How wish I can have my own DSLR.

Thanks Elwin and yes my Nikon D70 has given loads of pleasure and has been my constant companion! :) Only thing is that I haven't really taken the trouble to master it as I only rely on its "user friendly" qualities, ie, I only use the automatic, programme mode for all my pics, never resorting to manual! :D
A few years ago I travelled parts of England, Scotland and Wales by car and we stopped by Nothingham and visited the forest of Robin Hood and his men. I still remember the huge and imposing centuries-old trees that Robin & company used to hide in to await their wealthy victims. :p
BTW, you must be Malaysian but I also note that you use Singapore as your location. Did you ever study here? ;)

I'm saving money for my 1st DSLR now. Hope I can get one soon.
You must be visiting Sherwood Forest and the Giant Tree is there. This place is not very interesting at all. The only place I like most in UK is Scotland.
Yes, I am a Malaysian. I have been in Ngee Ann Poly for 2 years. So far, that is the greatest moment I had being a student. Opps.....I'm off topic now.....PM me if u got any Qs. :)
jeremykok 09-01-2006, 04:04 AM bad mania, it seems that u had already know that draw for the JPGG Surabaya Satelitte... can u lead me to the website to see the draw?
badMania 09-01-2006, 08:56 AM Please refer to the thread on JPGG Surabaya Satelitte. The draw is not out yet...the seedings for the various events are out.
badMania 09-01-2006, 09:12 AM It's all-Indonesian Finals in 4 events, with only WS featuring a Malaysian player. Predictions for the finals, with winners in bold:

Err... it's Tan Chun Seang... Haha... Poor CS, lost early as well! Bad tournament for him... Hopefully, he will do well in Surabaya Satellite!
Erin and Yan are glad that Daren got this far though. Jia You, Daren! Keep up the fighting spirit! Same to Wei Feng...
Beryno, Lim Kenn, Li Qun and others... Don't worry, you guys have chance to shine again very soon!
yannie 09-01-2006, 12:43 PM Frans Kurniawan/Rendra Wijaya
Is Frans the guy who played MD with Kowi?

ctjcad 09-01-2006, 01:39 PM Err... I have only personal pics of him, so can not post in here... But Kowi played with Frans before. Now Kowi moved to USA.
Ko Wi, as they called him, is Chandra..Yes, he has moved here to the U.S., living in Northern California to be exact. He actually played in the recent 2006 U.S. Open (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34946) @ OCBC abt 2-3 weeks ago(you can see his pics in there).
He also participated in the just concluded 2006 SummerSmash at SGVBC (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35611), with another ex-Pelatnas gal Mona Santoso, this past weekend(played in 3 events MS, MD and XD but lost all of them).
On good fortune, I was able to meet and chat with him last weekend. Friendly guy & quite reserved. I think he's only 20 or 21 yrs. old. He said he was in Pelatnas for only abt 1 yr or so and just quit earlier this yr, as a matter of fact just a few months ago. He mentioned he will be coaching at SmashCity Club and GGBC in Northern California(see Places to Play sub-forum under USA West for more infos). He also mentioned as of now, he is just doing some part-time coaching/sparring while helping with one of his "sponsor family's" small business.:)
badMania 09-02-2006, 11:29 AM In that case, the answer is YES. Frans Kurniawan was paired up with Chandra (no relation to Candra Wijaya of course) last year. Rendra Wijaya was originally paired with Rian Sukmawan. Since Rian Sukmawan has left the Pelatnas early this year to rejoin Djarum (and is now paired with Eng Hian), while Chandra also left the Pelatnas, Frans is now paired with Rendra Wijaya. I was impressed with their performance over the 2 days that I watched them. Too bad they lost to their more experienced counterpart, Yoga/Yonathan in the final today. Nevertheless, the Singapore Satelitte represents their best tournament so far. I hope they will meet Yoga/Yonathan again in the final of the JPGG Surabaya Satelitte next week!
badMania 09-02-2006, 11:47 AM So, it's a clean sweep by the Indonesians in all the Finals, with Pelatnas coming home with 4 titles and Jeffer Rosobin taking the men's singles title.
It's also nice to see Yoga/Yonathan winning their first international title (albeit a Satelitte title) following Hendra/Joko's footstep. I hope Rendra/Frans can do the same hopefully in next week's JPGG Surabaya Satelitte. Along with Hendra/Joko, the 2 pairs do have the potential to be promoted to the main team soon, esp since Pelatnas only have 3 main MD pairs right now (including Flandy/Sigit which I think will not remain long in Pelatnas).
Nitya/Nadya also won their second titles (following the India Satelitte last year), while Devi Tika also won her first title with Lingga. I don't know whether Lingga and Yulianti are going to be split for good, so, perhaps Sandy could comment on it. It could be that these 2 pairs will turn out to be very good pairs later on...so...we shall see. I am not too worried about the talents we have in XD, with Rizal/Gresya slowly proving to be a good backup pair of Nova/Butet.
It's also nice to see Maria Kristin proving to Hendrawan and Lius Pongoh that she still has something in her, esp after her impressive victory over Julia Wong Pei Xian today. Another win at the JPGG Surabaya Satelitte will be good for her, but, the competition is going to be more intense with the participation of Chinese and Japanese players (+ Pia Zebadiah).
While the main team is resting for the WC, the second team will now continue its journey to Surabaya for another week of satelitte competition.
Sandy 09-02-2006, 10:54 PM Talking about mixed double split & Frans/Chandra pairing, I need to open this link
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28725
Actually Lingga Lie & Yulianti played together since junior age in Djarum. I guess PBSI wanted to find best combination.
Devi Tika is from SGS Bandung, she has good results in this year, won WD in Sinar Mutiara (paired with Richi Puspita Dilli) beat Lily Siswanti/Shendy Puspa. Looking the WD SIN Satellite, paired with Shendy, they lost to Nitya/Nadya in very closed match. I thaught Devi is good double player who can paired with some players easily.
Congratulations to Maria Kristin, won again in Satellite tournament. If not wrong, this is 5th Satellite tittle in 5 difference place, Malaysia, Viet Nam, Jakarta, Surabaya and Singapore
Flash back 2 years ago, in Malaysia Satellite 2004, interesting results that 4 semi finals are from Indonesia, Maria, Firda, the young guns Pia Zebadiah & Sylvinna Kurniawan

Just showed to PBSI that Indonesia is has many talented player in Girl's Single (also Boy's Single), need give them good coachs, good training & more chance to play in International tournament.
zzz... 09-03-2006, 04:20 AM Can someone pls post Final pics?
Thanks
badMania 09-03-2006, 04:54 AM Actually Lingga Lie & Yulianti played together since junior age in Djarum.

This is the first time I watched Nitya/Nadya as well as Shendy/Devi play. Devi is calmer and more composed compared to Shendy, who actually made many unforced errors (although Shendy is damn tall for a girl  ). They nearly lost to a Malaysian pair in the quarter-final and that match was one of the best I watched at the Singapore Satelitte. Shendy/Devi could have some potential.
Tantowi/Yulianti (esp Yulianti) actually looked more impressive than Lingga/Devi when I watched both of them play. However, Lingga/Devi won the final  So....I guess the coaches are trying to form the best pairs as what you said.
I am not worried with the qualities of backup pairs we have at Pelatnas for MD. Yoga/Yonathan, Rendra/Frans should be ready to step out and compete in 3-4* events. They have started sending Yoga/Yonathan to more events this year...which is good news. I hope they do the same for Rendra/Frans. As for Ahsan/Bona and Lingga/Tantowi, I didn't come in time to watch them play on Wednesday, so, not much comments.
What the heck happen to Hendra Gunawan/Joko Riyadi. I thought they are already promoted to the main squad and ready to be sent to the Korea and HK Open. They have not been competing since the Malaysia Open 2006, when they lost the first round to Chew Choon Eng/Hong Chieng Hun
Loh, great pics. and thanks for so many of them! :D
Can someone pls post Final pics?
Thanks
Sorry I missed the Finals but will try to post some pics on the semi-finals tomorrow. ;)
zzz... 09-04-2006, 11:43 AM Sorry I missed the Finals but will try to post some pics on the semi-finals tomorrow. ;)
what a pity... but thanks for all the nice pics..:)
In the absence of powerhouses China, South Korea and to a lesser extent, Japan, Indonesian youths made a clean sweep of all the five badminton events.
I was there during the semi-finals and witnessed the triumph of these youngsters. Only Julia Wong (MAS) managed to beat Gu Juan (SIN) as the sole non-Indonesian to enter the finals. But Julia was also to succumb to the might of Indonesian, Maria Kristin Yulianti the next day.
Knowing that a complete white-wash was in store during the finals for the Indonesians, I chose to attend a more exhilarating event: the RSAF (Republic of Singapore Air Force) Open House at their Airport Road base to be informed of the latest 3rd Generation arrangements to defend the country if under attack.
Here are the results of Finals:
XD - Lingga/Devi Tika Permatasari bt Tantowi/Yulianti, 21-17, 24-22 (29m).
WS - Maria Kristin Yulianti bt Julia Wong (MAS) 21-13, 22-20 (36m).
MS - Jeffer Rosobin bt Andreas Adityawarman, 21-19, 15-21, 23-21 (59m).
WD - Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati bt Puspa Shendy/Devi Tika Permatasari, 15-21, 21-17, 21-17 (55m).
MD - Uki Kasah Yoga/Suryatama Yonathan bt Rendra Wijaya/Frans Kurniawan, 21-19, 18-21, 22-20 (43m).
SEMI-FINALS

Hi badMania, good to note that you're home safely.
Yes, my main intention was to take as many pics of the upcoming talents so that more of us would recognize them. Unfortunately, I could not take all of them as I was late during some sessions and the pics did not turn out as well as hoped. But under the circumstances, at least I've managed to do my part.
Its going to be another week of competition here as the Cheers Age Group (Doubles) Championships are now in progress, ending on 9th September.
Hope to see you soon!
The following pics recorded the mini titantic battle between Darien Liew and teammate, Chong Wei Feng, during the quarter final, which Darien prevailed 13-21, 21-17, 21-13 in 50 min.
They are reproduced here for their ardent fans, Yannie and Magical Phoenix. ;)

Hi young lady, I noticed you've changed your BC name now. Hope you like 'our' pic Serla sent you.
And thanks to you, I got a chance to know Song better. I've seen him play previously and was impressed even then. It is good that he played against such an experienced player as Jeffer Rosobin, aged 27. Song can only get better (provided he continues to train deligently).
I must also thank Serla for introducing me to Chong, who played very well during the tournament. I'm sure we look forward to seeing more of Chong and Song in Singapore. :)

Song asked me to bring him to Orchard Rd after his match against Jeffer?!?

Chong & Song did a song and dance
On the baddy court at Toa Payoh
The birds did fly
And sometimes went wild
But the guys held on 'solo'
Then came Gina and Serla
To push their spirits higher
Serla shouted "Chong"
Gina followed up with a huge "Song"
The guys went a gogo with full vigour
Yannie was far away
And could only say and say
"The juniors are so cute"
"Better than their seniors, even Ah Fook"
They just went nuts over them.. everyday... :D

Yes, I led the way by shouting Chong's name first so that shy Serla can emulate. :D
This is a special one for ants as promised.
I think the ladies wouldn't mind because there is no way that ants or others could recognized them from this pencil drawing if he/they should meet in person. :D ;) :)
Sorry ants, forget to post pic. :)
Here goes (Pardon the poor uneven fluorescent lighting):

Hi young man (I presume so), I've replied to your other post. But I need to run through my album to see whether I took appropriate pics of her to post for you! :)
Have patience. :p

Serla, I hope I've not disappointed you (and Gina). Drawing with a single pencil on computer paper is not my preferred cup of tea. But when ants requested our group pic, I can't afford to fail him because he is a good friend.
So I took the liberty of sketching the three of us after office hours and went home to take a digital photo to be able to post it on BC Forum this morning at the office. I can't do this on my home computer. But my reading light at home cause a little havoc to the already 'unrealistic' drawing. It might as well, cause as I quite understand, you and Gina do not wish to have your real selves publicised? But ants and I have posted our pics in the BC before (and even Yannie), so we are quite immuned to it. :D
maybe ants and others can recognize??? Though Geor and I actually don't look that fierce. ...
Serla, don't visualize it that way...:p
Smiling does not gel with fierceness. If ever there is such a thing as fierce smiling...hahaha ;)
Georgina 09-13-2006, 09:35 AM OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
I cant stop laughing!!
Loh,you sure have lots of hidden talents ya?!
Very artistic in fact!
Ya,I dont think anyone can recognise me in that!
HAHAHAHA!!!
Wow.. LOh! you drew that? Nice.. looks almost the same with the Originals. Just that your version is black and white.
Dreamzz 09-13-2006, 01:55 PM that is amazing, this guy is full of hidden talents.
yannie 09-13-2006, 01:58 PM Whoa!!! Loh!!! You're wonderful... Poet, artist... maybe singer next time?
Dreamzz 09-13-2006, 02:01 PM hahahaha, write, draw, take pictures, play badminton, sing?, dance?, play an musical instrument?

Here goes (Pardon the poor uneven fluorescent lighting):
Haha...I recognized you and Serla. Haven't met Georgina though :D
Whoa!!! Loh!!! You're wonderful... Poet, artist... maybe singer next time?
I think you've given me an idea of what to do when I'm forced out of work. :crying:
I'll plant myself at the entrance of one of the more popular and well-utilized MRT (train) stations. When human traffic is very high, with my guitar in hand and a mouth-organ close to my lips, including a pair of big sun-glasses to hide my face, I will belt out musical numbers, from sentimental ones like "Gina", "Fascination" or "When I Fall in Love..." (Nat King Cole) (since there are many youngsters in pairs) to fast rocks like "Jail House Rock" (Elvis Presley) or "Rock Around The Clock" (The Comets) and some Broadway musicals like excepts from "The Phantom of the Opera", "The King and I", "My Fair Lady", "The Sound of Music", "Les Miserables", "Nothin' Like a Dame", etc, etc. I'll make sure that my sound system will be able to drown out my voice so that my deficiencies will be well-hidden.
During the lull periods, in order to entertain myself, I will recite poems written by amateurs and academics which I collect from the internet and try my hand at sketching portraits of those who dare to risk their faces being distorted and turned into cartoons! ;)
How's that for a living? :D
