rgds
badMania 09-20-2006, 11:56 AM Errr..I don't think Park Sung Hwan's match against John Moody and Lin Dan's match against Bobby Milroy have started. So, there could still be some upsets
We have nice exciting matches to watch tomorrow...
2cents 09-20-2006, 11:59 AM I remember people argued before who got the easiest draw. Now let's review it now since things are getting clearer. Here is my order (from easiest to hardest) for this round:
Hafiz, Lee HI, Gade, Chen Jin, Lee CW, Lin, Palyama, Bao, Hidayat, Sony Pang, Kuan, Persson, Sato, Park, Chen Hong
So, It seems Hafiz, Lee HI, Gade, .. get easy draws, while Chen Hong gets the hardest. Taufik seems in form.
aquaboi 09-20-2006, 12:10 PM Now the real battles just get started ...
Chong Wei Lee vs Persson
Bao vs Sony
Chen Jin vs Kuan
Lee Hyun Il vs Pang
Hidayat vs Chen Hong
Sato vs Gade
Palyama vs Hafiz
Park vs Lin
yes...agree! hidayat v chen hong will be the match to watch...ch will have to wait another day for a chance to beat taufik...:D
Taufik will win. Chen Hong has bad record with Taufik, only 1 win.
Only Bao Chunlai can stop Taufik.
badMania 09-20-2006, 01:06 PM As one of you have said, there's plenty of mouth-watering clashes tomorrow. A total of 36 matches to be played from 2pm Madrid time. So, here's my pick for tomorrow's matches:
MS ROUND OF 16
Lee Chong Wei vs Joachim Persson -- no problem for Lee!
Bao Chunlai vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro -- I hope Sony wins...but...But is superior!
Chen Jin vs Kuan Beng Hong -- Kuan has done his job...reaching the last 16. He will not beat Chen Jin.
Taufik Hidayat vs Chen Hong (MATCH OF THE DAY) -- Taufik has been Chen Hong's nemesis and his luck against the Chinese player shall continue tomorrow...probably in 3 sets.
Park Sung Hwan vs Lin Dan -- a more difficult opponent for Lin Dan compared to today's...but...shouldn't be a problem also.
MD ROUND OF 16
Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto vs Roman Spitko/Michael Fuchs -- shouldn't be a problem for the INA pair.
Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan vs Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah (MATCH OF THE DAY) -- a tough tie for Kido/Hendra and a test of their credential. I hope they win.
Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo vs Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Lin Woon Fui -- the Malaysian pair has an edge.
Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen vs Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae -- a close candidate for match of the day. Experience vs youth...and I pick youth!
WS ROUND OF 16
Zhang Ning vs Wong Mew Choo -- no question, the Chinese player should win!
Kaori Mori vs Jiang Yanjiao -- a tricky tie for Jiang, but, she should manage.
Yip Pui Yin vs Pi Hongyan -- Pi to win!
Tine Rasmussen vs Xie Xingfang -- the Danish player has recovered well from her injury. She could pose some problems for Xie.
Eriko Hirose vs Xu Huaiwen (MATCH OF THE DAY) -- a tough tie for both players...I pick the German to win.
WD QUARTER-FINAL -- all four Chinese pairs are expected to make it
Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing (MATCH OF THE DAY)
Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota vs Du Jing/Yu Yang
Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen
Saralee Thoungthongkam/Sathinee Chankrachangwong vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
XD ROUND OF 16
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs Koo Kien Keat/Wong Pei Tty -- with CCM's withdrawal in the MD, it could motivate KKK to win this match. A real tricky test for the defending champion. They should win.
Jonas Rasmussen/Britta Andersen vs Robert Blair/Natalie Munt -- the Danish pair has had a rest day, while the English pair struggled in beating the Chinese Taipei pair. Both sets ended up in deuce. I pick the Danish pair.
Zhang Jun/Gao Ling vs Zhang Wei/Yu Yang -- thankfully, Lee Yong Dae/Hwang Yu Mi lost surprisingly today. Zhang/Gao should have a clear path to the semi-final.
Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting vs Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms (MATCH OF THE DAY) -- a thrilling match is in store...expect 3 sets...with deuces. The English pair holds a slight edge.
Robert Mateusiak/Nadiezda Kostiuczyk vs Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam -- Sudket/Saralee should progress.
ye333 09-20-2006, 02:05 PM MD:
Fu/Cai - Kumar/Sanave
should be an interesting match. I still remember how Kumar/Sanave troubled Candra/Sigit in last year's WC. The Indian players have amazing reflexes and appeared even faster than Sigit sometimes.

Zhongbo XIE/Yawen ZHANG v William MILROY/Tammy SUN

Hirose is probably the strongest Japanese. but unforutnately, she still has a way to go...
Tracey HALLAM v Monthila MEEMEK
dunno
Ning ZHANG v Mew Choo WONG
watched WMC 1st round match. probably one of the best non-chinese-derived players around. but unfortunately, bad draw against Zhang Ning. Li Mao will have to wait another couple of years.

hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 05:24 PM Here is my pick:
XD
Zhongbo XIE/Yawen ZHANG v William MILROY/Tammy SUN
Xie/Zhang went from getting the toughest draw in XD draw (before Korea pair withdraw) to getting the easiest draw to sail into QF. 2 sets!
Nathan ROBERTSON/Gail EMMS v Bo ZHENG/Tingting ZHAO
The record are not so good for Zhao/Zheng, but lately they play very well meanwhile Nathan/Emms play below their best play. Chinese pair will win in 3 sets.
Sudket PRAPAKAMOL/Saralee THOUNGTHONGKAM v Robert MATEUSIAK/ Nadiezda KOSTIUCZYK
Thai pair will move on to QFin 2 tough set.
Thomas LAYBOURN/Juhl Kamilla RYTTER v Mohd Fairuzizuan MOHD TAZARI/Sock Ai OOI
No question at all. The Danes roll on in 2 set.
Jun ZHANG/Ling GAO v Wei ZHANG/Yang (F) YU
It will not be easy for Zhang/Gao to win their junior pair cause they probably play each other so many times in their training. 2 tough set.
Jonas RASMUSSEN/Britta ANDERSEN v Robert BLAIR/Natalie MUNT
This is the Danes chance after Jens/Mette withdrawal. 2 sets.
Nova WIDIANTO/Lilyana NATSIR v Kien Keat KOO/Pei Tty WONG
Will be hard fought 2 sets for the Indonesia pair to win.
MD
Haifeng FU/Yun CAI v Rupesh KUMAR/Thomas SANAVE
Wuushhhhhhh, sail through......for Cai/Fu in 2 sets.
Luluk HADIYANTO/Yulianto ALVEN v Roman SPITKO/Michael FUCHS
Ditto.
Jens ERIKSEN/Martin LUNDGAARD HANSEN v Shuichi SAKAMOTO/Shintaro IKEDA
Same here.
Tan Fook CHOONG/Wan Wah LEE v Markis KIDO/Hendra SETIAWAN
The Indonesia pair held advantage bywinning their last meeting only 2 weeks ago. 3 hard fought sets.
Mohd Fairuzizuan MOHD TAZARI/ Woon Fui LIN v Zhendong GUO/
Zhongbo XIE
Hard to predict. Judging by Malaysian pair who almost lost to Russia pair in first set today, it will be 50-50.
Lars PAASKE/Jonas RASMUSSEN v Jae Sung JUNG/Yong Dae LEE
It a shame, why LP and JR only play together in Thomas Cup event this year before this WC. So the Korea pair will advanced in 3 sets.
WS
Chen WANG v Petra OVERZIER
Wang sail through.
Petya NEDELTCHEVA v Susan HUGHES
Petya more consistent than Susan. She will win in 3 sets.
Yanjiao JIANG v Kaori MORI
Judging from Kaori MOri lately performance, 2 sets for Jiang.
Hongyan PI v Pui Yin YIP
Pi advanced in 2 sets.
Xingfang XIE v Tine RASMUSSEN
The same result as Hongkong Open semifinal, XXF roll on with 2 sets.
Huaiwen XU v Eriko HIROSE
2 years ago with Cheng Shao Chieh, Eriko is one of the rising star in WS who were not came from China squad. But after two year, she cannot break through the top elite WS. So Xu will win probably in 3 sets.
Tracey HALLAM v Monthila MEEMEK
Tracey will win in 3 sets.
Ning ZHANG v Mew Choo WONG
Zhang Ning will win in 2 sets.
MS
Chong Wei LEE v Joachim PERSSON
LCW will win 2 tight set.
Muhd Hafiz B HASHIM v Dicky PALYAMA
Hafiz will roll on in 2 set if he play his usual standard.
Peter GADE v Shoji SATO
PG will roll on in 2 sets.
Jin CHEN v Beng Hong KUAN
Same here
Sony Dwi KUNCORO v Chunlai BAO
THeir record is 6-0 for Bao Chun Lai. It will take 200% effort from Sonny and BCL under performed for Sonny to win. After he won his second title this year, BCL will be much more confidence. He will sail through in 2 sets.
Dan LIN v Sung Hwan PARK
If LD play seriously, he will advanced in 2 sets. If he goofing around, 3 sets.
Taufik HIDAYAT v Hong CHEN
iTH had to play better than today in order to win Chen Hong. If his standard like today, CH will win. TH will advanced in 3 tough sets.
WD
Wei YANG/Jiewen ZHANG v Saralee THOUNGTHONGKAM/Sathinee CHANKRACHANGWONG
Chinese pair will steam roll the Thai pair. Not to mention the Thai pair lay a long match today against Japan second pair. Not to mention the Chinese already won 6-0 against the Thai.
Jing DU/Yang (F) YU v Kumiko OGURA/Reiko SHIOTA
Du/YU already won 2 title this year. 2 easy set for the Chinese. They probably smile alot after they know their toughest rival in this QF draw the Korean pair withdraw.
Ling GAO/Sui HUANG v Yu-Chin CHIEN/Wen-Hsing CHENG
11-0 for Gao/Huang so far. 2 closed sets. And the Chinese will roll to SF.
Pei Tty WONG/Eei Hui CHIN v Yawen ZHANG/ Yili WEI
THe Chinese already win twice this year against the Malaysian pair. And this time it will make number three win. They already past their toughest fight in this QF draw against the England in R16. So All China WD SF this year.
Chu Liuxiang 09-20-2006, 05:41 PM Now the real battles just get started ...
Chong Wei Lee vs Persson
Bao vs Sony
Chen Jin vs Kuan
Lee Hyun Il vs Pang
Hidayat vs Chen Hong
Sato vs Gade
Palyama vs Hafiz
Park vs Lin
Park Sung Hwan beat Lin Dan during their last met at MO2004 SF. Lin Dan better be careful this time.:D
2cents 09-20-2006, 05:59 PM CHN team has won 30+ matches without losing any. But it will not be the case tomorrow. It's guaranteed that some CHN players will lose tomorrow, the question is how many and who are they?
MAS team did pretty good also, especially the men's team, without losing any, except CCM early withdrawal for family reasons. Hope CCM gets well and becomes stronger in the future, since he has to be the man in the house now.
INA team, DEN team all are doing pretty good. The early rounds of WC are definitely boring because its limitations. Usually in open tournaments, many youngsters, new bloods, came to play, and upset veterans, some low ranked but decent players, like Chen Yu, Simon, Qiu YB, YKB,... made a lot of upsets. But now at WC, they are excluded to play, so you can only watch big guns slaughtering in early rounds.
hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 06:00 PM Just for fun! :D
Lets analyze who had the toughest draw and the easiest draw to become the champion in WC2006?
Lets start with XD!
The easiest draw probably should go to Nova/Lilyana. Due to Jens/Metter withdrawal, they will only meet tough opponent in SF and F/ Probably all will be Chinese pair.
The toughest draw shoud go to Zheng Bo/Zhao TT.
In order to become the champion, they beat Hendry/Li in R64. Will fight Nathan/Emms in R16. Later had to win Kamila/Thomas in QF. And probably meet XieZB/ZhangYW in SF and Nova/Lili or Zhang/Gao Ling in final. Fiuuu!!!!
Can they made it? At least both ofthem only play XD .
hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 06:03 PM For WD.
The easiest draw should be Yang/Zhang Jie Wen. They only had to worry their SF round against Wei Yi Li and Zhang Ya Wen. And their toughest rival GaoLing/Huang Sui in final.
The toughest draw should be went toThai pair, Saralee/Sathinee. They barely scrapped through in 3 sets against Japanese pair in R16. Had to Win 3 Chinese pair from QF,SF and Final to win the WC title. Can they do it?
hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 06:07 PM From MD!
The easiest draw should went to Jens/Martin. After CCM/KKK withdraw, they only had to meet top rival in SF, probably Cai/Fu and then final against Korea/Malaysia or Indonesia pair.
THe toughest draw should go to Jung JS/Lee YD. They will meet Jonas/Lars in R16. Malaysia or China pair in QF. Chong Tan Fook/LWW or Indonesia pair in SF and maybe Denmark or China pair again in final. Tough luck!
hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 06:09 PM From WS:
The easiest draw should go to Zhang NIng. Thanks to Yao Jie withdrawal. ZN only meet top rival in SF, Wang Chen or Jiang Yan Jiao and probably her nemesis XXF in final.
Toughest draw should go to Jiang Yan Jao. In order to become WC, she had to beat Kaori Mori in R16. Wang CHen in QF, ZN in SF and maybe XXF in Final.
hcpoirot 09-20-2006, 06:14 PM And now for MS:
THe easiest draw will be for Lin Dan. HIs toughest opponent should come in SF. Peter gade/Taufik/Chen Hong and then maybe LCW or Chen Jin in final.
The toughest draw had to be Taufik. He had to beat 4 number one or ex number one ranking player in order to become the MS champion. Chen Hong in R16. Peter Gade in QF. Lin Dan in SF and maybe LCW in FInal. Can he do it?
Lots of his loyal fans said he still can do it but lots of people doubt him judging his recent form and performance. We should wait and see. His first test start today. :)
red00ecstrat 09-20-2006, 06:34 PM Xingfang XIE v Tine RASMUSSEN
The same result as Hongkong Open semifinal, XXF roll on with 2 sets
Tine RASMUSSEN is a "BLACK HORSE"! She will be a real threat to the top players in perhaps a year!;) so watch out Xie!
2cents 09-20-2006, 06:59 PM Just for fun! :D
Lets analyze who had the toughest draw and the easiest draw to become the champion in WC2006?
If we need to analyze, we need to define what is the toughest or easiest. I would use the multiplication of their opponents transparency (the courerpart for strength) to calculate:
Official ibf rate Taufik, LD, LCW, PG, LHI as the top tier, I would like rate LHI a little bit lower, I know many people argued with me before, but you can rate another number and calculate again.
Assume the #1 seed Lee CW's strength is 0.8, then Lin Dan's 0.8, TH: 0.8, PG: 0.8, CJ: 0.5, BCL 0.5, CH 0.4, LHI 0.5, Sony 0.4, Persson 0.0, KBH 0.2, Pang 0.0, Sato 0, Palyama 0, Hafiz 0.4, Park 0.3, then here comes the easiness of their draw:
LCW: (1-0.0)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x100= 5 :D :D :D
Persson: (1-.8)x(1-.5)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x100= 1
BCL: (1-0.4)x(1-0.8)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x100= 1.2
Sony: (1-0.5)x(1-.8)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x100= 1.0
Chen Jin: (1-0.2)x(1-.5)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=1.6
KBH: (1-0.5)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x(1-0.8)x100=1
Lee HI: (1-0.0)x(1-.5)x(1-.8)x(1-0.8)x100=2
Pang: (1-0.5)x(1-0.5)x(1-0.8)x(1-.8)x100=1
Taufik: (1-0.4)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.48
Chen H: (1-0.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.16 ( )
Sato: (1-0.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.16 ( )
Gade: (1-0.0)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.8
Palyama: (1-.4)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.48
Hafiz: (1-0.0) x (1-.8)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.8
Park: (1-.8) x (1-.4)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=0.48
Lin D: (1-.2) x (1-.4)x(1-.8)x(1-.8)x100=1.92
that number is calculated by his opponents, will totally independent of himself.
Wow, Lee CW has the far more easiest draw
How come so many people here complained that LCW got much tougher draw than Lin Dan.
Chen Hong and Sato are the most unlucky one. As a seed, Chen Hong should be better than Sato because Sate was not seeded. But no body here complained for Chen Hong's toughest draw. People only said he's weak, but his draw is the toughest which independent of himself.
Of course most lower seeds, no not seeded, have much tougher draw than top seeded. here is the sorted order from easiest to hardest:
LCW: 5 <--- too easy comparing to all others
LHI: 2
Lin D: 1.92 <---
Chen J: 1.6

The toughest draw had to be Taufik. He had to beat 4 number one or ex number one ranking player in order to become the MS champion. Chen Hong in R16. Peter Gade in QF. Lin Dan in SF and maybe LCW in FInal. Can he do it?
Logical errors here. If you think Taufik is stronger than Chen Hong. then Chen Hong gets tougher draw than Taufik. The same apply to Sato, he has to overcome Gade, then the best of Taufik/Chen Hong, how come Taufik gets the toughest
pramilainc 09-20-2006, 08:46 PM ... probably not.
Brave_Turtle 09-20-2006, 09:03 PM 90% TH will win it
CLELY 09-20-2006, 09:09 PM Definitely Yes! From head-to-head statistic in their 8 duel, TH leading 7:1 to CH. I guess CH still keep traumatic to face him.
kontrabando 09-20-2006, 09:15 PM If TH is back to his old form, I'd say TH has a 90% chance of beating Chen Hong...It's hard to predict TH's condition at the moment as he himself is hiding his true form IMO...I'd say 50-50 chance...If he beats CH in straight sets, PG or even LD is in deep trouble...
pramilainc 09-20-2006, 09:30 PM Let's hope CH is back to his 'Lin Dan beating' form as well, and I think TH is too arrogant to take the match seriously...
ye333 09-20-2006, 09:36 PM I don't think so. No one can beat CH without taking the match seriously. I believe Taufik will be serious and will beat CH in straight games.
Let's hope CH is back to his 'Lin Dan beating' form as well, and I think TH is too arrogant to take the match seriously...
Eurasian =--(O) 09-20-2006, 09:41 PM Taufik still doesn't seem 100% to me. I really, really hope that he can still achieve his former great level. t3tsubo 09-20-2006, 09:53 PM personally i like chen hong's playing style the best out of all pro players. He seems to rely SO much on deception and tricky shots that he looses most of his points in unforced errors and or badly judged shots.
with chen hong i dont think its a matter of physical toughness that will win him a mathc but mental.
seeing that, taufik is still one of the if not THE most rawly talented player out there, so he has a good chance of winning

hcyong 09-20-2006, 10:15 PM WD QUARTER-FINAL -- all four Chinese pairs are expected to make it
Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing (MATCH OF THE DAY)
Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota vs Du Jing/Yu Yang
Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui vs Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen
Saralee Thoungthongkam/Sathinee Chankrachangwong vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Definitely an all-Chinese final. Very hard to believe otherwise. But as for the semifinal, I hope it won't be all-Chinese, although there is more than half probability that it will be. Cannot see the Chinese top 3 (Gao/Huang, Yang/Zhang, Du/Yu) losing to other pairs except Lee/Lee. So, only Wei/Zhang is a bit vulnerable. If it was Saralee/Sathinee or Chien/Cheng taking on Wei/Zhang, then maybe they have a chance, but Wong/Chin ... well, I think we shall see all-Chinese semis, but I hope not.

Lots of his loyal fans said he still can do it but lots of people doubt him judging his recent form and performance. We should wait and see. His first test start today. :)
..hmm, there's another slew of posts in other threads on Taufik's chances...And the most glaring of his challenge is his supposed "ban" from IBF which will be decided at end of week. I'm sure if it's not hanging in his mind by now, it's probably creeping up on him as the day nears.. :p
For the top half of the draw, don't underestimate Bao and Chen Jin...LCW is not automatic to be in the Final..;)

Unprepared champion Hidayat in second round scare

Defending titleholder Taufik Hidayat, seen here in June 2006, suffered a second round scare in defence of his crown at the world badminton championships after admitting he had not warmed up properly.
(AFP/File)
Defending titleholder Taufik Hidayat suffered a second round scare in defence of his crown at the world badminton championships after admitting he had not warmed up properly.
The titleholder from Indonesia underestimated his little known opponent, Kestutis Navickas of Lithuania, and was made to endure some anxious moments before he escaped to a 19-21, 21-15, 21-10 win.
Hidayat, who is still making his way back after long-term injury problems, was completely in control at the finish but started at the difficult end and was surprised by his tall opponent's ability to combine steep attacks, often with spectacular jump smashes, with remarkably good court coverage.
"I didn't warm up properly because I was over-confident," acknowledged Hidayat.
"There was a problem with the drift (slight wind) and I hoped I would be able to adjust, and eventually I did."
A turning point came when Navickas served out at 11-15 in the second game when a run of two of three points at that stage might have put the champion in real trouble.
The third game saw Taufik take an early lead, and although he was still not out of difficulty at 13-8 he made a surge of high-paced rallies, often with flat attacks mixed with sudden fast flicks to the back, all of which had Navickas scrambling.
"I turned the match round on the second game," said Hidayat, smiling in relaxed fashion after his second round hiccup.
"And I improved from yesterday (when he beat Ng Wei of Hong Kong in two close games).
"But I will warm up for longer tomorrow (Thursday). Tomorrow there is a chance of the quarter-finals. And my opponent will be very different, so I will have to be prepared."
That opponent should be Chen Hong, the former All-England champion from China, against whom Hidayat said he had never lost, though he had forgotten his defeat in the Japan Open 17 months ago. But even though Hidayat has an excellent 7-1 record against Chen, there are also reasons for caution.
If Chen reaches the third round he will be particularly motivated to improve this dismal head-to-head, and Hidayat admits that while his troublesome back is "okay", it is also "not one hundred percent."
It may need to be.

madbad 09-20-2006, 10:39 PM I'm just trying to imitate the previous post "Will Taufik beat Ng Wei".
From neutral perspective I think TH has a better chance, but CH is one of my favourite players, so I want him to win.
The longer Chen Hong keeps Taufik on the court, especially into the 3rd game, the better chance he has of exploiting Taufik's lack of stamina. Other than that, it seems pretty bleak for Chen Hong. Sorry!
2cents 09-20-2006, 10:42 PM Let me look at the relationship between easiness index with their ranking. The higher ranked player is supposed to have easier draw.
LCW: 5 ---- 1
LHI: 2 ---------------- 5
Lin D: 1.92 ---2
Chen J: 1.6 ------3
BCL: 1.2 -------------------- 7
Sony: 1.0
Person: 1.0
KBH: 1.0
Pang: 1 .0
Gade: 0.8 ----------- 4
Hafiz: 0.8 ---------------------- 8
Taufik: 0.48
Park: 0.48
Palyama: 0.48
Sato: 0.16
Chen H: 0.16 --------------6
so the difference between the easiness index and ranking:
Lee CW = 0 <-- this is fair
Lin Dan = -1
Chen Jin = -1
Gade = -6
Lee HI = 1
Chen Hong = -10
Bao CL = 2
Hafiz = -3
Taufik = 31-12 = 19
From either the table (slope from upper left to bottom right), and also the difference, it's clear that Chen Hong and Gade got the most tougher draw than he should deserve. While for Taufik, he should feel lucky because he should deserve the 31st easiest draw. Now he's 19 positions better than that :D :D :D

There was no indication that his statement was said in jest, so I made an assumption he was puffing his chest out showing some bravado. True, no pressure on Cheng Hong at all but I still think Taufik will make him eat humble pie.
madbad 09-20-2006, 10:50 PM Jin CHEN v Beng Hong KUAN

HAHAHAHA. Poor KBH, the only player to be counted WAY out of the league. All we expect from him is a decent showing and see how long he can keep Chen Jin on the court.

It is very very difficult for CH to defeat TH. He will be facing at least 2 opponents at a time.
1. He has to be able to defeat "himself", being traumatized when facing TH[ which I think is the hardest].
2. TH is fit now and motivated to retain his title.
I remembered watching CH vs TH during the Sing Open [Final], CH's facial expression and body language had showed that he had lost even before the match started.....TH won 15:8, 15:3

cooler 09-20-2006, 11:46 PM Badminton: Hughes in upbeat mood after ‘one of the best’
ELSPETH BURNSIDE September 21 2006
Susan Hughes pulled off one of the best wins of her career so far when she eliminated the No.16 seed to reach today's last 16 of the women's singles at the world badminton championships in Madrid.
The Scot, a Commonwealth Games medallist, landed the opening three points against South Korea's Hwang Hye- Youn and never looked back, claiming a comfortable 21-15, 21-12 victory in just 40 minutes. "I came here hoping that the five months' hard training I put in over the summer would pay dividends and it did today," said the 23-year-old from Glasgow. "This is right up there as one of the best wins."
Hughes now meets the Bulgarian, Petya Nedeltcheva, a No.5/8 seed, who was taken the full distance before knocking out Singapore's Li Li 13-21, 21-19, 21-15, and she remained in upbeat mood.
"After today, I'm feeling confident about playing Petya," she said. "I think I definitely have a chance to go through to the quarter-finals."
Hughes is the only Scot left in the championships. Watson Briggs and Imogen Bankier had a glamour mixed-doubles tie against England's Olympic silver medallists, Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, but lost 21-12, 21-10, while in the second round of the men's doubles, Stewart Kerr and David Forbes went out 21-12, 21-11 to the Japanese pair of Shuichi Sakamoto and Shintaro Ikeda.
Robert Blair, the former Scottish internationalist who now plays for England, reached the last 16 in the men's and mixed doubles.

Agree. Not sure can be a champion of WC.
2005 singapore open, Taufik beat the following: Simon, Peter Gade, Lin Dan, and Chen Hong.
For this time, I am not sure Taufik can beat Chen Hong. But Chen Hong performance also bad.
Maybe Taufik can beat Chen Hong, but not sure can beat Peter Gade and Lin Dan. He just come back from injury, family problems, and last one at hongkong... It is all will be impact to taufik.
If taufik nothing problems, no body can beat him or difficult to beat him.

if INA loses 2 of its players, they have 0 left.. ;) ..and possibly 1 of them will get a "ban" from IBF...:p
If Bao and CH lose, their defeats will get "contagious" to LD and CJ...This is typical of Chinesse players (mens)...Look at what happened in OG...
modious 09-21-2006, 01:35 AM hope the two ina can win the matches...
I predict Bao Chunlai and Taufik to go through. :p
ccskaki 09-21-2006, 01:44 AM Hopefully Bao and Chen Hong will win!
Well most probably Bao will win. But I'd like to see Chen Hong beat the arrogant Taufik.
hcyong 09-21-2006, 02:11 AM Taufik and Sony are the two best Indonesian MS.
Bao and Chen are arguably behind both Chen Jin and Lin Dan in the Chinese MS order.
cao ci dan 09-21-2006, 02:22 AM Taufik and Chen Hong....mmmm...no problem!!!
ccskaki 09-21-2006, 02:32 AM Go Malaysia! Go China! Win Win Win!
But frankly I don't have much confidence in our boy LCW. He's just not there yet, eventhough he and his coaches always think he is.
I've watched badminton matches for years. Everytime a player or coach says that "this is our best chance to win blablabla...", the results would mostly turn out to be bad for them. The current Malaysian badminton national team is quite a big talker compared to previous generations, but with not much actual on-court success. Irrational confidence is not a good thing. That's why we always crumble when it matters most. Always loosing out in finals, it's not even funny.
Team China is different. They have a good system, good players, consistency, and they are rationally confident (not just talking big). They approach a tournament by training hard and having systematic preparations. And they deliver.
And the last time Malaysia ever won anything big in badminton, it was the Thomas Cup in 1992 under two head coaches from China. Other than that, we are at most the runner-up (World Championship runner-up, Olympics silver medal, bla bla bla).
I think it's a cultural thing. We are more relaxed and laid back (happy go lucky). Look at the responses in this forum, almost all are overly optimistic (Wong Miew Choo to beat Zhang Ning? My oh my...). The players must first recognize their weaknesses instead of boasting, before they can really improve and reach the top.
I agree that a player or coach must learn to be more humble in public and not talk too much about winning before the real thing. Let the player prove himself/herself on court. It is important to have confidence and self-esteem but don't brag and become too over-confident. The result will show.
Chu Liuxiang 09-21-2006, 03:16 AM Men Singles QF
LCWei vs BCLai
CJin vs LHIll
THidayat vs PGade
HHashim vs LDan:rolleyes:
Maybe HHashim vs Park Sung Hwan ( LD lost to Park during their last met):D
aquaboi 09-21-2006, 03:18 AM it's taufik...no doubt about it...ch will give him a scare but wont be enough...sorry ch, better luck next time:D
Dreamzz 09-21-2006, 03:20 AM i think there have been no real surprises in the MS and MD, except for CCM/KKK unfortunately having to pull out.
the only real interesting match in the MD is LP/JR vs JJS/LYD, that'll be a cracker.
also, in MS, the only real 50-50 is TH vs CH, yeah, i'll give the indonesian the edge here as well.
the others should not be bothered too much ...
CLELY 09-21-2006, 03:21 AM R/16 for INA's participants:
- Luluk/Alven vs Spitko/Fuchs (08.45pm--JKT time)
- Nova/Lilyana vs Koo KK/Wong PT (09.50pm)
- Sony vs BCL (11.10pm)
- Markis/Hendra vs Choong TF/Lee WW (11.45pm)
- TH vs CH (22/09/06 ; 12.30am)
Wow,more thrilling in this round although too late hour for INA's time.No serious hurdle for both Luluk/Alven and Nova/Lilyana to continue their step in QF.Unpredictable result for Markis/Hendra, MAS's veteran duo absolutely will pump up two times their efforts to keep MAS's hope after withdrawal of their team-mates yesterday. And Sony, still unconvincing to beat BCL.Maybe this is a time to correct his record against him.Last but not least,Big match for MS division at R-16--> TH's real hard-test to defend his crown is starting from this round. Good Luck for them, Maju terus-Pantang nyerah!

If all players and coaches are humble, the sport will be very, very boring.
Being over-confident, big-mouthed and the likes are the spices of the sport..
I strongly encourage players and coaches to be "over-confident and big-mouthed". That makes the competition more colorful, entertaining, and, last but not least, makes opponents "hot" and "itchy to fight"...That is the core spirit of competition in sport....:)

Let outsiders, observers and big fans (like Indra) do all the talking and verbal fighting to make the match more interesting! ;)
Look at Mohd Ali now, he can't even defend himself. :(

To a certain extent it is good for the sport but a little too much can be annoying. Remember too much of anything can be bad too.

It really depends on where you're standing, your point of view.
The IBF officials would like over-confident and big-mouthed players, colorful players to hype up the game of badminton. Controversies attract audiences. Rivalries attract audiences.
On the other hand, to the player himself/herself, over-confidence and being big mouth do him/her no good. It's good for the show of course, but not good to his/her medal collection. Let your game do the talking. If you win, then you can afford to talk. But I just don't understand players/coaches who talk before they win.

I don't remember any MAS players or coaches boasting, just the fans trying to pump up the chances. In fact, I'm sick of hearing them saying 'We hope to go one further', which meant they won't win the title! What's wrong with saying, " We 've worked hard and feel in great shape. Of course , we're gunning for the title but anything can happen. We'll see."
I'm sorry you lack confidence in LCW. Malaysia has every reason to be proud of him. Mind you , I believe he went to HKO , like a lone ranger, without any MAS MS spoilers to help him.And he reached the final because his aim was to play LD. You think LCW got to where he is through luck? He has to work thrice as hard as LD to reach the final .Would LD dare come to MO on his own or even with just one escort?CHN's MS confidence is so lacking, LD must be accompanied by CH and CJ. MO, CTO and HKO! Correct me if I'm wrong.Pls give credit where credit is due.
