:D ...hehe, don't worry kwun, if not many good players coming again, we'll gladly accept the RUS team to come over here again and give the rest of the competitors another whipping...except of course Tony and Halim who will hand out their own brand of whipping..:p ;) :D ...

How does it work...? Can just anyone enter? I know it says US Open but its not like any one of us "amateurs" can just walk in an play a match with Dabeka or Nakanishi. And btw, does anyone know what is happening with Raju Rai. Is he going to be getting surgery. Because well normally he should beat Chris Trenholme, (altho Chris was playing exceptionally well). I feel for the guy. He's a great player...altho I support Chris the whole way!!

actually, it truely is an open, you can enter to compete in it. all you need to do is to be a member of USAB, and you can pay the entry fee and play in the qualification round.

Oh cool..but just the qualifiers right? You only get in the main draw if you win your qualifiers? And do you know what the approximate entry fee is? Thanks!

I've noticed that Zhou Mi has been playing lots of small tournaments, so I'd anticipate her coming to play US Open.
If Chen Hong comes too - that would be great, maybe he can play mixed double with Zhou Mi and take two titles. :D:eek:
Heck, if USAB will let them play Men's Doubles, they might take three titles...:D:D:D:eek:

No, they will win all 5. Look at the recent level of US Open, both Chen Hong and Zhou Mi will win the MD and WD also just from picking anyone from the street as their partner. :D

i agree. if she can play the Miami Pan Am, OCBC is even closer. and it provides better prize money also. it is a good strategy for Zhou Mi, she can easily win these smaller tournaments like NZ and US, the prize money will cover her expenses and with quite a bit left to make pretty good living. better keep that on while she is still fit.

it will certainly attract more players as the prize money went from 1* (US$30,000) to a GP/2* event (US$50,000). but as i mention, the geographical location as well as timing doesn't work out as well so i doubt too many players from the larger badminton powerhouses will come.

Just wanted to apologize for my last post, I was short on time, and running out the door, so I may have sounded rather rude.
What I meant to say was, it would be great if more pros from other nations participated in the US open, and further that we'd be able to see Canada vs US rematch of the Pan Am Championships @ the US open.

:)..back to the U.S. Open...I read a couple links on the history of the U.S. Open and apparently, prior to 2001, it was called the OCBC Open, with OCBC & K&D Graphics(Don Chew's companies) being the main sponsor. However in 2001, in the link below, after the inception of the name U.S. Open, i read Yonex has been a part or co-title sponsor with OCBC and K&D Graphics. And if not mistaken, at that yr, the prize money was $15,000 with $5,000 of which being sponsored by Yonex. Perhaps that's why they've been calling it "OCBC U.S. Open" ever since?!?...Now, whether the prize money is still being shared by both OCBC and Yonex, that i can't confirm. Many parents said you have to pay $55 for admission and only $75 to play 2 events. For $20 bucks more, your have a chance to play with the higher level players, experience big tournament feeling. An hour private lession cost from $40 to $60. They said its a good deal if you dont feel embarassed

Flight tickets to the US are relatively expensive... :( Many national associations in Asia don't want to spend so much when there are other tournament options closer to home, within the region... :) After Indonesia Challenge, there is the Indian Open Gold GP the next week, followed by Japan Superseries, then Chinese Taipei Open Gold GP... That's 4 weeks in a row... :)

Hi friends!
I'm the coach of portuguese Badminton player Filipa Lamy ( http://filipalamy.no.sapo.pt ) I hope that this tournament will be a great tournament for her ranking and for her olympic qualification.
Hugs
Hi Chris, I meant other countries..so far 15 countries confirmed including china, taiwan, malaysia, India,England to set to play Suarabaya challenge...I think most of them after WC, fly to Indonesia then India....I am curious which players China will send to Surabaya...
I hope next year, US Open will not clash with any tournaments...
Doesn't matter what date US Open is schedule, as long as it's not Gold Series or above then will be hard to attract any top player. I was fooled thinking badminton will emerge in US after the successful World Championship 2005 ... I was very wrong:crying:

Yeah..we have to dream it for a while....US is rich but no one gives S*** for badminton yet...:(:(
The only one who seem to care [from an outsider's perspective] is that guy [whoever he is] who leads OC Badminton Club. He keeps organizing [and funding] the US Open year after year after year... :D
I know it is tough for badminton in the US, but it was difficult for soccer as well [in the USA]... Badminton need to keep growing at the grassroot level. Decade after decade after decade... [easier said than done, I admit]... when there is a mass following, then the business will grow. If the grassroot business grows, then sponsorship $$$ and prize money $$$ will also grow... And if Nike, Adidas, Wilson, etc. are involved... cha-chiiiinggg! $$$ $$$ Then badminton can be a sport that US athlete's choose as a career... :)
Yes, worldwide badminton itself has to grow. BWF is not doing enough right now... Too much internal fighting there eh? :crying: I am scared to read that article about badminton's decline in Denmark due to the lack of $$$ for players... Aiyaa... very scary. Declining Denmark and European involvement is very very not good for worldwide badminton... :crying:

I'm sure you guys wil have fun watching this US Open. Maybe some of you will laugh your heads off watching some players.
Ants, you don't seem to be the disrespectful type of person, so maybe you can clarify your statement. For us people living in the US, we don't get the chance to see many top players compete here. You are lucky you live in Asia and gets to travel to different Opens to watch the top players. I am thankful of the few that shows up here and all the rest no matter what their skill levels are. Only once a year do we get to see international players compete here. And it's a chance for local players to see how they match up against people from other countries.

He probably was just kidding....in the US, some of us fortunate ones were able to go to the world championships when it was at the arrowhead pond....other than that event, we will most likely never see a 5 or 6* tournament.
No matter what anyone says...any tournament that has professional players will beat the living you know what out of us :)

I personally think that the popularity of badminton in North America is key for badminton to get the recognition it deserves as a sport worldwide. Movers and shakers in advertising and promotions, financers and marketing innovators, would usually originate from that side of the world. Whatever kind of rating this current US Open has, I am glad that you guys are supportive, as it is important to keep the interest in the sport going.
I do agree though, that it will be a big boost if a super series will be held in the US one of these days. But the follow through for such activities though, should be continuous, it can't just be a one time event that will happen every 5 years, to be able to get some mileage

Just coincidence, this year bdm US Open has same week with Tennis Grand Slam US Open/07 schedule (27/08 - 09/09/07). Total prize-money has stunning difference -- bdm offers US$50,000 meanwhile tennis provides US$19,653,000! Gosh, so sad for badminton 'small prize'...
There's LIVE-SCORE facility from the organizer despite the level of tourney is only GP and lack of top players. GP Gold tourney should do like this!

Are my eyes deceiving me? Yesterday the Japanese MDs loses to the # 237 ranked team and just now MS # 1 seed, # 13 ranked speed demon Shoji Sato loses to unseeded, #53 ranked Scott Evans from Ireland!
Congrats to Scott Evans!
Dang, what's going on at the U.S. Open? :p
I'm now predicting last year's winner, Yousuke Nakanishi or Tien Minh Nguyen to win it all in the MS.
The Japanese must be feeling tired after the WC. I'm sure they will bounce back in Japan Open.

Thats true. They told me before ( No Offence ) that they "the Japs" don't like American Food. In fact most players in the tour love Japanese Food.

Yup! I was wondering whatever happened to her after 2004/2005. Is she planning a comeback? I remember her match in the Uber Cup against Gong Ruina where she took the Chinese player to 3 hard sets. After that match, and winning a major title or two, many predicted her to become a force in WS to counter the Chinese. But she got injured the next year, right?

With small crowds or fans showing up to watch baddy tourneys in Canada, cannot justify the cost to stage the event in big arena, and no major sponsors to pick up the tab. WC85 was held in University of Calgary arena and even then crowd attendance is very small. WC05 was held 20 years later in Anaheim and the SF and finals with PG-LD, TH-LCW and then LD-TH in finals was not full, lots of empty seats if you consider the seats occupied by the players. I organized 12 of us to see WC05 in Anaheim, now we can expect a long wait before WC comes back to North America.

(sorry guys for the belated pics & summaries)...Been a bit busy and had to catch some zzzz, for my jet-lag, after my long trip..:p..Anyways, here they are..Saw some very interesting and entertaining matches. 2 of which went to rubber sets, where in one of them, one of the top seeds and crowd favorite fell to another player who played in last yr's Final. Video clips will be up in a while, so hang on for those..:p;)
Here are some pics and reviews of the MS QF Round:
- Andrew Dabeka vs. Scott Evans - Saw a very interesting match with a very emotional ending. Evans was playing very casual the 1st 2 games, displaying some outstanding defense, But in the 3rd game, with some supports from the crowd, Dabeka tightened the game. In the end, even Evans had led for a brief period, and after a controversial and questionable call, Hughes complained to the SJ and Umpire where he received a black card. He went off to the side bench and was really upset. In a way Evans was upset at himself for blowing some lead.
- Yousuke Nakanishi vs. John Moody - It was no contest, as the cat-quick Nakanishi really controlled the whole match. Moody tried his best, but just wasn't able to counter Nakanishi's speed.
- Nguyen Tien Minh vs. Richard Vaughan - This is got to be the most entertaining early match of the day. The crowd favorite Nguyen T.M. really controlled the 1st game. But after winning the 2nd game, Vaughan seemed to gain more confidence. The momentum carried over to the 3rd game, and with several long shots and errors from Nguyen, opening the way for Vaughan take the lead. At the end, he was able to hold of Nguyen and advance to the Semis.
- Lee Tsuen Seng vs. Sho Sasaki - Lee T.S. played comfortably with his experience, along with some nifty net plays. Sasaki made a valiant effort coming back in the 2nd game, but Lee T.S. didn't want any part of a rubber set and ended the match in straight sets.

Another entertaining set of matches. One of which proved to be arguable the most entertaining match of the day.
- Anna Rice vs. Yun Hwa Lee - Lee was in control of the match, while pushing Rice all over the court. Rice tried, but it was no contest as Lee won in straight sets.
- Lili Wang vs. Pai M.J. - Saw a slow start by both players, but Pai M.J. was able to book herself in the Semis.
- Elizabeth Cann vs. Agnese Allegrini - Witnessed an interesting match between these 2 young and hard-hitting players. Allegrini showed some grit, challenging Cann, but it was Cann who was able to hold off the Azzuri's charge.
- Jun Jae Yun vs. Kanako Yonekura - With the crowd chanting & clapping "Nippon, clap, clap, clap, Nippon..." and "Ganbatte" very early on, Kanako would certainly welcome the support and cheer. And she surely needed it as the young and up and coming KOR Jun really controlled the pace of the match. In the 1st set, she was slow to react and seemed off pace. But after a scintillating rally in the 2nd set, inspired by some persistent & eye-catching plays along with a lot "Nippon, Nippon!!" and "Ganbatte! chants from the small Japanese supporters, it was the younger and more fit Jun who claimed herself a spot in the Semis. I think we have seen the return of KOR's #1 WS player, after ending her injury period. And OTOH, I think it's safe to say that perhaps Ms. Yonekura's badminton career is essentially in the end.

Saw several exciting matches. In the end, 2 of the 3 U.S. pairs were able to advance to the Semis.
- Yu Hsun Chien & Yu Lang Lin vs. Howard Bach & Bob Malaythong - Saw a player, in Chien Y.H., who played in the U.S. Open a few yrs back, but now is playing with a new partner. They held their own in the 1st set, but the experienced and more explosive U.S. pair finished off the match with the support of the many U.S. fans.
- Roman Spitko & Michael Fuchs vs. Tony Gunawan & Raju Rai - Even playing against an opponent who is as tall as an NBA player AND playing with a singles specialist in Raju Rai, it was Tony who dominated the net and wrecked havoc against the Germans. In the end, it was the Master and his Student, working together and advancing to the Semis.
- Naoki Kawamae & Kenishi Kawaguchi vs. Mike Beres & William Milroy - A pretty quick match, as the young JPN pair used their faster pace against the Canadians. Beres & Milroy didn't seem to find their pace and when they did figure out what to do, it was too late for them.
- Halim Haryanto & Eric Go vs. Tadashi Ohtsuka & Keita Matsuda - It was an easy win for the experienced JPN pair, whilst at the same time set up a Semifinals Rd. meeting against their compatriots. The JPN pair was quick to the punch, as the newly formed U.S. pair just couldn't find their rhythm, nor defense nor their game.

Many young pairs showed some of their skills, and did they. But it will be down to either the JPN and KOR pairs who will stake a claim in the Finals.
- Panita Phongasavithas & Vimla Phongasavitas vs. Miyuki Maeda & Satoko Suetsuna - The 2 young local sisters/pair gave all they've got, but it was the more experienced JPN pair who locked the match and set themselves in the Semis.
- Hyun Hee Joo & Seul Ki Oh vs. Pek Siah Lim & Chiou Hwee Haw - When the match started, i couldn't figure out who would win. But as the match progressed, it was clear that the young and stronger KOR pair would anchor themselves in the Semis and set up the 1st of 2 JPN vs. KOR matchup in the Semis.
- Yun Hwa Lee & Jae Youn Jun vs. Jung Eun Ha & Yu Mi Hwang - It was the battle of the KOR pairs as the 4 compatriots duked it out. In the end, 2 of their compatriots had to give and it was Ha & Hwang who booked themselves in the Final.
- Aki Akao & Tomomi Matsuda vs. Noriko Okuma & Michiko Kanagami - It was again a battle of 4 compatriots. But this time, it was betwee the Japanese. In the end, the #1 pair in the tourney stamped their way to the Semis, setting up another KOR vs. JPN matchup.

8 pairs duked it out, but it wasn't til the last XD match, where the fans saw perhaps the most exciting and nerve-wrecking match of the day.:p:cool:..Sorry again for the not-so-sharp pics..:p
- Tony Gunawan & Minarti Timur vs. Rudy Wijaya & Lili Wang - the 2 veteran pairs squared off first, but it was the crowd favorite who prevailed in the end. Once again, it was the age-less Minarti who set up the many smashes fom Tony as well as some splendid cross court net shots which drew some "Oohs and aahs" from the crowd, with the expected around of applauses.;) A very enjoyable match, nonetheless and we probably won't see another match from these 2 doubles specialist legend again.
- Howard Bach & Eva Lee vs. Tadashi Ohtsuka & Satoko Suetsuna - The current U.S. Nationals played and showed why they deserved the title this past Spring. With Lee setting up the attack and Bach pouncing and pounding his way to the gut of the JPN pair, it was an easy victory for the U.S. pair.
- Mike Beres & Valeri Loker vs. Kennevic Asuncion & Kennie Asuncion - With the support of the Philippines crowd in the bleachers, the sibling Asuncion combo never let down their concentration and kept the pressure on the Canadians. In the end, with the great PHIL crowd support, it was Loker who had to fend off most of attacks from the PHIL pair and the Asuncion siblings made sure they booked their way in the Semis,
- Halim Haryanto & Grace Peng vs. Keita Masuda & Miyuki Maeda - What a match it was! With the U.S. pair dominating & smashing their way to victory in the 1st game, it seemed like they would be on their way to the Semis. But NOOO, it wasn't to be. Lo & behold in the 2nd game, everything seemed to crumble and fall apart for the U.S. pair. As the match extended in the 2nd game and the JPN gained more confidence, the JPN pair closed off the 2nd game after Peng's net shot went wide and out. It was downhill from there for the U.S. pair as they just lost their concentration, and perhaps their energy in the 3rd game. Even with Tony's coaching and the crowd support, it was the JPN who took advantage and made less errors in the 3rd game, as Halim seemed to make really costly mistakes. With some support from the Philippines crowd who shouted "Let's go Miyuki", the younger and fitter JPN pair stormed their way and eventually closed the match. In the end, a disappointed crowd gave their last cheer to the 2 pairs who played their hearts out.

Well, Jun Jae Youn has started her effort to back on track, won the tourney. I think her latest title is 6* KOR Open 2005. With Lee Tsuen Seng victorious, maybe better for Hafiz to take part in GP tourney rather than participate in SS or GP Gold level without satisfaction result.

If the Russian team was the biggest winner in last yr's Yonex/OCBC U.S. Open edition, this yr's biggest winner is the Japanese team, winning 3 of the 5 respectable titles. With a full board of their 2nd & 3rd tiered players, it would be somewhat of a major disappointment for the Japanese team not to win anything. But behind all the supporters who cheered and chanted "Nippon, Nippon (claps)" continuously, they probably felt more at home playing here in the U.S.
Unlike last yr, the atmosphere and electricity were indeed in the stadium early on, as the enthusiastic crowd was definitely there to support the U.S. squad. Yet, even with their fans' support, for the first time in quite a while, it was the U.S. team who failed to grab any titles. Wits its, arguably, the #1 player, in Howard Bach, representing the U.S. in 2 of the events played at the same facility which has held this U.S. Open tournament for a while, the U.S. team failed to win any events.
The other representatives who bagged the other 2 titles included Lee Tsuen Seng from M'sia, winning the MS title, and Jun Jae Youn from Korea, who won the WS title.
The ending wasn't what the U.S. fans/squad/organizer were hoping for, but it was very enjoyable ending to this edition of the U.S. Open. A lot of surprises along the way but overall the players and organizers have given another memorable moment & exposure for all the badminton fans in the U.S., esp. Southern California region. Looking forward again to next yr's edition.
XD Final - Howard BACH & Eva LEE vs. Keita MASUDA & Miyuki MAEDA - 21-19 11-21 19-21
The first of 2 thrilling rubber matches of the day involved the U.S. pair vs. the JPN pair. Playing with the support of the crowd, chanting "USA, USA!!" in unison and in between rallies and breaks, Howard and Eva played with enthusiasm and vigor. Creating chances & taking advantage to attack on every opportunities and won a very entertaining and close 1st game. After the break, the JPN pair regrouped. And did they. Without any thoughts of what happened in the 1st game, the JPN pair rushed and pulled away from the Americans as they tightened up their defense and were on the attack more. On the other hand, the U.S. pair seemed to be out of focus and couldn't get the same rhythm as they did in the 1st game. With the U.S. pair scrambling and on the defense, the JPN pair pulled away and took the 2nd game. With 1 game each for both pairs and going into the rubber game, it was time to show which pair had the focus, energy and nerve of steel to win. And indeed, the 3rd game became a true barn burner as every rallies and points scored put the crowd and all of U.S. fans on the edge of their seats. The lead changes weren't much, but the U.S. pair held a slight edge up til the 11 pt interval. After that break point, the JPN pair turned on their game & coupled with a few erros from the U.S. pair, raced ahead & seemed to be in control of the game. While the U.S. pair seemed to be stuck at their interval score. The U.S. pair never gave up, rallying back and even came as close as 1 pt of evening up the score. But with a chance to possibly even up the score, and the game on the line, it was Howard who was on the spot. This time, as he did a few times early in the game, his serve went into the net and the JPN pair was in jubilation. The disappointed expression on his face really reflected back on the crowd as they gave a big sigh of disappointment and perhaps relief (after the tense moments). Nevertheless, it was a closely fought battle, as both pairs turned a very well played match and it was truly crowd-pleasing. Howard and Eva were gracious at the podium, though, even in defeat. Will Howard redeem himself against Masuda in the his MD match later in the day?? Or will his errors cost another losing effort?..

WS Final - Jae Youn JUN vs. Yun Hwa LEE - 21-18 21-16
The WS Final match turned out to be pretty enjoyable, as the fans were treated to watch 2 of the young and up-and-coming KOR WS players. And one of them, Jun Jae Youn, didn't disappoint the crowd. Playing as if it was another practice session, the 2 KOR gals, displayed some marvelous skills complete with an array of drop shots, cross-court net shots & trick shots, which drew several "oohs and aahs" & applauses from the crowd. Early in the 1st game, Lee took the initiative and led Jun by a sizeable score, even led by as many as 8 points. But not bothered by the big margin, slowly and surely, the ex-#1 WS for KOR turned on the afterburner and patiently caught up with Lee. With the score tied at 14 a piece, Jun showed her exquisite footworks and techniques, as she took over and pulled away to take the 1st game. After the break, Jun continued her lead by showing her superior yet consistent & simple style. Lee tried to catch and even up the match at 1 game a piece, but Jun never relinquished her lead. Jun's almost effortless style of play, coupled with a couple of errors here and there by Lee, essentially secured her first title after a recent struggle with an injury. At the end, the young Jun was able to redeem her recent lost to her compatriot, in a recent National championship match, and showed why she was KOR's ex-#1 WS player. And perhaps she is now back to compete and challenge the rest of the world's top WS players.

MS Final - Tsuen Seng LEE vs. Yousuke NAKANISHI - 21-14 21-10
After the wonderful performance by the 2 KOR young ladies, it was time for the 2 guys to display their skills. With the defending U.S. Open MS champion on the court, it was time for MAS' Lee to step up and try to dethrone Yousuke. It was a slow start by the defending champion, as Lee took a quick 4-0 lead, eventhough both were still feeling each other's playing style. But once each player warmed up, it was Lee who started to force the tempo of the game in his favor. By playing more accurate shot placements, not allowing Yousuke to perform his exciting crowd-favorite jump-smashes by playing more net-game and a couple or so erros from Yousuke, Ah Seng (nickname of LeeTS) took a big lead in the 1st set and raced away to take a tightly contested 1st game. After the 1st game, it was a bit different out there on the court. Yousuke finally started to get his rhythm back and began to show more of his trademark jumpsmashes, as well as his speed. The score was close for the 1st half of the 2nd game. But once again, Lee never lost focus of his strategy and started to take advantage of more errors from Yousuke. After the break point, it was Lee who dominated as he pulled away for a convincing win and thus dethroned Yousuke of his U.S. Open title. After
clinching his final point, Lee was seen very joyful as i'm sure many of his M'sian fans must be thrilled with his win.;)

WD Final - Miyuki MAEDA & Satoko SUETSUNA vs. Aki AKAO & Tomomi MATSUDA - 16-21 21-14 21-15
If the first match of the day was a nerve-wrecker, then this WD match turned out to be the most thrilling one, esp. towards the end of the 3rd game; very titillating. Playing with a shoulder & arm tape, strapped around her shoulder, this Maeda gal truly was a great competitor and showed why she deserved her double gold titles in this whole tourney. Though the match was being fought back and forth for nearly 1 hr. long, the JPN combo of NA-DA (Suetsuna & Maeda), fought with all they've got and showed a much better team chemistry. In the 1st set, the fresher legged JPN combo of AO-DA (Aoki-Matsuda), took their game and led throughout, closing the 1st set in nearly 20 min. long. But even after losing the 1st game, the exhausted and spent Maeda was able to gain enough energy, whatever was left of her, to force a rubber set. In the 2nd game, the NA-DA combo, regained their focus and ran away with the game. For some reason, the AO-DA seemed to lose their focus, playing much more defensively. For some reason, Maeda seemed to gain a 2nd pair of legs. And along with the support of Suetsuna, the rejuvenated Maeda was still able to keep on smashing, repelling & returning all types of shots that were thrown at her. The momentum of their 2nd set victory carried over to the 3rd game, where the game was tightly played. After several lead changes, and after the break point, the NA-DA combo raced ahead, whilst the AO-DA combo were left running and chasing all the shuttles. Even with the continuous chant support from the crowd of "Matsuda, GANBATTE!!", the NA-DA combo never relinquished their lead as they focused their attack on Aoki. Aoki in return, never was able to control the situation, and instead committed more errors, perhaps due to fatigue. Even her body language showed that she was panting. Towards the end of the match, there was 1 play which signaled the end of the AO-DA combo. It was when they just finished a long rally, and the NA-DA combo sent a cross court shot, which forced Aoki to rush over and dive for the shuttle. She failed to retrieve the shuttle, while sliding on the mat, and that play drew applause from the crowd as the NA-DA combo was set in winning the match. After the final point of the match, the NA-DA combo raised their hands, hugged each other in sheer jubilation and received high fives from their coach. Whilst the AO-DA combo was left still wondering and trying to regain their breath. All in all, the 1 difference i noticed between these 2 pairs, was the NA-DA combo really worked as a team/pair and their collected effort propelled them to victory. And the crowd rewarded them with a big round of applause for their effort.
One interesting note: I notice for these 2 pairs, each pair had a different coach.

MD Final - Tadashi OHTSUKA & Keita MASUDA vs. Howard BACH & Khan MALAYTHONG - 21-18 21-11
To cap off the night, the last match of the night gave the crowd, who waited til past 10 pm, with some high energy performance and hope of perhaps a victory, saving at least 1 title for the U.S. As a rematch of their recent World Championships Round of 32 match, the U.S. pair jumped to an early 2-0 lead. But the lead was soon evaporated and the JPN pair was on the attack, cutting and smashing whatever shuttles that were in front of them. The lead changed a couple of times, until the JPN pair was able to break through. Just like how they played against Howard and Bob in the WC, the JPN pair never gave much chance to the U.S. pair to unleash their attacks or set up one themselves. Even with a few brilliant plays from Bob & Howard, the JPN pair kept the shuttles low and never gave the Americans any rhythm and any further confidence. Along with several errors and long shots from the Americans, the JPN pair raced ahead and closed off the tightly contested 1st game. But even after the 1st game lost, the crowd still chanted "USA! USA! USA!", in hope it will spur an inspired U.S. comeback. But any comebacks by the U.S.' #1 MD pair quickly went down the drain as they trailed quickly by as many as 8 points (the JPN lead 8-0 to start off the 2nd game), some of which were the results of errors. And as if it wasn't bad enough, the lead grew to 9 pts, as the U.S. pair along with its fans/supporters knew that the JPN pair was just too much too handle. Towards the end, a frustrated and disappointed Howard and Bob could only get as close as 10 points, as they saw a chance of continuing the U.S. domination in the MD event slipped away. The JPN pair simply steamrolled their way to claim their first ever U.S. Open title with not much sweat. IMO, for some reason, Howard seemed to be pressing or perhaps trying to think too much out there in his 2 Finals events, as he also made 2 or 3 faulty serves during his MD match which found the net, a couple of which happened in a crucial stage of the match. At the end, it was Maeda's XD partner who became the other double gold titlist, and at the same time finally winning their sought after U.S. Open MD title which they lost at the hands of Tony G. and Bob M., 5 yrs. ago.
*Just a quick observation of this U.S. MD pair: IMO, usually in MD, 1 of the pair will be the setup/front court player, while the other the smasher/finisher. It seems to me, that this current U.S. pair doesn't have that someone to be a setter or front court player. If they have one, i can't really distinguish if it's Howard or Bob, as both seem to be interchangeable and not sure what role each player should be focusing on. I also wonder, I know they wanted to pair up Bob and Howard in preparation for next yr's Olympics's seeding, but what if Tony and Halim were still playing in the Finals?!?..we'll never know..

..no clue, whatsoever, abt their absence...however:
1. All i know is that, some or all of the Russian players (winners & runners-up) from last yr's U.S. Open had participated in this yr's World Championships in M'sia. And that includes the same Japanese players also..
2. But from posts in this thread, apparently Yonex USA sponsored or had asked the Japanese players to come and participate...And consider the traveling and logistical issue the Russian players will have to face, esp. after the just finished World Championships..:rolleyes::p..Traveling from Japan to U.S. (L.A.) will most likely take 10-12 hrs..IMO, a bit more bearable for the JPN squad..:p;)
