Greetings from SFO!

Just arrived and glad to know that my hotel provides free internet service :D

Browsed through the draws and the XD event has been completed.
Not much surprises and glad to know that all the three INA pairs have progressed.

Selected results:
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir bt Jonas Rasmussen/Britta Andersen 21-14, 21-16 -- another Danish pair (Lars Paaske/Helle Nielsen) awaits tomorrow!

Hendry Kurniawan Saputra/Li Yujia lost to Zheng Bo/Yu Yang 21-19, 15-21, 11-21 -- the newly formed Chinese pair will face Robert Blair/Natalie Munt next.

Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Ryter-Juhl lost to Daniel Shirley/Joanna Quay Swee Ling 18-21, 18-21 -- probably the first upset? The Kiwi-Malaysian pairing will face Hwang Ji Man/Ha Jeung Eun next.

Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen beat Songphon Anukritayawon/Kulchala Voravichitchaikul 21-13, 19-21, 21-15 -- a tough victory for the still not in-form Chinese pair. They will have an easier task against a Japanese qualifier pair tomorrow.

Toru Matsumoto/Miyuki Tai lost to Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa 14-21, 7-21 -- an easy first test for the newly formed INA pair. They will face the WC silver-medallist Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg next and they should stand a chance!

Howard Bach/Eva Lee lost to Mohd Rizal/Gresya Polii 12-21, 14-21 -- the young INA pair will meet Zhang Jun/Gao Ling next. Let's see how they will perform against the experienced Chinese pair!

BCL may have just had an off day.
i hope TH does well though, love watching him play when he's serious ....

Morten
10-11-2006, 07:48 AM
Well if we take a look at Roslin and TH theres nothing new and surprising in those results imo. Roslin can be a pain in the ... to play cause of his defensive style and he showed us in Korea Open that he still got it in him, in my opinion hes malaysias 2nd strongest atm. When it comes to TH he can play some very nice badminton, but what he lacks atm is his stamina and no one even with that potential can wipe world class players if they got a bad stamina, if TH starts training serious and gets motivated he will be back, if not he will be a threat but nothing more than a dark horse in major tournaments.

Wow...just woke up to see quite a number of upsets in the first day of the Japan Open.

It was a close and surprising rubber-set victory for Taufik Hidayat against the recently crowned WC silver-medallist. Now, he has a VERY smooth route to the semi-finals, with matches against Koichi Saeki (who had beaten Ng Wei) and either Sho Sasaki or Ronald Susilo (a good tournament for Ronald as well if he can reach the quarter-final!). This victory against emphasizes the point that if Taufik truly wants to win, he can achieve that! China might have to rethink its strategy of fielding Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin for the Asian Games

For the other games involving INA players, Sony Dwi Kuncoro was beaten by Lee Chong Wei as expected in straight sets. Simon Santoso benefited from Kuan Beng Hong's absence to win two matches and progress through Round of 16 with a clash against Chen Hong. A victory against the WC semi-finallist is a bonus!

Meanwhile, Jo Novita/Gresya Polii also survived a rubber-set match against an unknown local pair and they will face Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen next. As with Simon, a victory is a miracle!

For the non-Pelatnas pair, Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya did not break a sweat as they beat an unknown local pair in just 16 mins  Their next clash against Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen is quite mouth-watering indeed.

Seems like China has had quite a rough day yesterday.

In MS, they only have 3 out of 16 players with the exit of Bao Chunlai, Chen Yu, Li Yu, and Qiu Yanbo.

In MD, the only pair who survived is the World Champion Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun. The two others: Guo Zhendong/Xu Chen and the newly formed Zheng Bo/Xie Zhongbo both lost to the WC silver-medallist Anthony Clark/Robert Blair and Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man respectively.

So, if INA is to win the gold medal, one strategy they could do is to let Simon play first singles (he is on track right now, based on ranking) and Taufik plays second singles. It's a safer point to get 1 point rather than to put Taufik as the first and Simon as the second singles. Meanwhile, INA should also bank on the second doubles (if it gets that far). The third point will be a little tricky. Let's hope Sony is recovering in time because he is likely to play the 3rd MS after his loss in the second round yesterday.

Roslin beat a chinese player... that is a good breakthrough for him. Taufik's performance against BCL is not that convincing. He was rusty and a little slow. However i hope this is just a warm up match for him. He was lucky that he won that match. However well done Taufik.

Badminton: Olympic champion Hidayat beats Bao in Japan Open

TOKYO : Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat came through a tough three-game match to knock China's world silver medallist Bao Chunlai out of the Japan Open badminton tournament on Wednesday.
The encounter was on a knife-edge at 18-18 in the final game before the unseeded Indonesian rallied to win 21-12, 12-21, 21-19.

"It was tough for the first match. But it was a bit unlucky for me to play such a strong opponent in my first match since my ranking has gone down," said Taufik, 25.

"Because, even if I had lost, it's all right. But if I win, it gives me a bigger chance to advance further. I can concentrate on my other matches better than today."

The unpredictable Hidayat has spent much of this season on the sidelines due to injury and crashed out of last month's world championships in the third round.

"It's only my sixth tournament. That's why my ranking has gone down. One of my goals here is to move up in the rankings because of the Asian Games at the end of this year," said Hidayat, ranked 34th.

Hidayat's next opponent will be Japan's Koichi Saeki, who beat ninth seed Ng Wei of Hong Kong and Yusuke Shinkai in his opening matches.

Meanwhile, world champion and top seed Lin Dan of China eased aside Japan's Yusuke Arita 21-11, 21-17 in his opening match.

Asian champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, the second seed, downed former Asian champion Soni Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia 21-13, 21-18.

European champion Peter Gade of Denmark thrashed Takuma Ueda of Japan 21-13, 21-13, while fifth seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand beat Takashi Kawauchi 21-15, 21-5.

Former Japan Open champions Muhammad Roslin Hashim of Malaysia and Ronald Susilo of Singapore also reached the third round along with Chen Hong, Roslin's brother Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, and Simon Santoso of Indonesia.

Joint ninth seed Shoji Sato of Japan and Dicky Palyama of the Netherlands failed to clear the first hurdle, while Keoh Kay Bin crashed to a 21-15, 9-21, 23-21 defeat to Poompat Sapkulchananart of Thailand.

In the women's competition, Soratja Chansrisukot of Thailand shocked 1998 Asian Games gold medallist Kanako Yonekura of Japan 21-18, 21-19. - AFP/de

I still cant forget what he had done in Malaysian Open
He refuse to accept the ethnic cap,
he doesn't respect our culture!!
Futhermore, he threw on the floor the mock cheque right after the ceremony.
Where is the sportsmanship that a player should have?

Get the facts right before making a statement. One thing for sure, he didn't arrived in S'pore when he was 10 yrs old. His Indonesian club was Jaya Raya and he was trained from VERY young age in Indonesia but because he thought he couldn't go far due to high/intensive competition in Indonesia and decided to leave Indonesia to get better chance.

Don't u think that it is much more interesting if TH vs LCW in semi? No worries for LCW revenge over Bao, as LCW sure win over it. with 9 times winning record. The WC is consider a "slip" for LCW.. no worries...
