Not sure if anyone has posted this before, but here's a cool badminton flash game:

http://dev.revoke.ca/flash/badminton/

It's not particularly accurate (as far as rules go anyway) but it's good fun and very addictive :D!

Thanks to cliff from the NZ Badminton Forum for finding it!

Oh and you can control the direction of your shots by holding the arrow key and the shot key before you hit it.

EDIT: It seems to run faster if you download it (click the download link at the bottom of the page) - more like a real game of badminton (in the speed of it at least).

Well I did about 5 jump smashes in a row just to win 1 point. And although the ball died on the other side and I got the serve, my score was still 0!

The jump smashes are awesome though, normal human beings would never be able to perform so many, so high in a row. Haha! I can only dream about even doing one.

Yes, it's really easy to score actually. You can score easily 2 ways, and the 3rd way, though harder is the most fun.

Easy scoring:

1) Jump serve and push the right arrow "-->" to serve deep and the opponent can never return the serve.

2) When you are in a rally just keep pushing your opponent deep, he will returner shorter and shorter. Finally, do a deep jump smash and you'll win the point.

Not so easy but fun:

Do #2 but instead of smashing deep, smash angle when the opponent returns very short.

Other tactics

short serve

attacking clear get behind the shuttle

wait in the net then jump and kill it off

Lol, yeah as I said - the rules are messed up :D. But it's still fun all the same (just so long as you don't jump smash serve :p)!

Hehe yeah (although it ruins the fun of the game if you do it), and I just found out you can double hit - although it's pretty hard, you still get a point if you win the rally :).

Did anyone know there was a Japanese badminton game on NES?

Look it up, it's called "Super Dyna'mix Badminton"

I like how the difficulties are represented by countries, China being at the top :p

The programming is simply wonderful. It takes a while to really get the controls down at the level where you can actually play well, but it's worth the effort. After a while you can play the Chinese and make a good game that looks oddly like a real one.

all based on this game..
Anybody know any developer or anything about the code...
It will be interesting for BC programmers (include me) to contribute to update it to a multiplayer game and also have have like tournaments and stuff - Phaarix suggestion..

Hello everyone

I developped the badminton game on revoke.ca, and thank you all for the interest you've taken into it. It's actually just a prototype, so this is why it's not fully fonctionnal, and also it's why it's located on the "dev" subdomain of my server, which is supposed to be locked to outsiders. I really wonder how you found it, but it doesn't really matter to me that it came out here.

I plan on finishing it someday, and adding an online multiplayer mode. That would be really great, since there aren't many "good" badminton games available to us, badminton players.

And also, it is based on the Super Dynamix Badmiton NES game ;)

Hey, you've done a great job so far, keep it up :)! Someone posted it on the NZ Badminton Forums so that's where I found it, other than that I have no idea how it got around hehe. I can tell you for sure that it would be very popular if you added multiplayer. As for Super Dynamix Badminton, yes that's the first thing that came to my head after playing this :D. Although I never really got into the NES game, I think this is a lot more fun even in it's prototype state!

Hm, if you don't hit a direction button, the shuttle will fly over the net.

ONly hit the "stroke" button and perhaps UP or DOWN!

When i play on the left side and hit RIGHT, then the shuttle will not fly over the net, don't know why.

Perhaps you have to jump before...

xt6666, SDB is a game of skill.

You have to get behind your shuttle, a bit more if you want more angle, a bit less if you want to drop or clear instead of smashing or driving, tighten the angle with the forward key so the shuttle grazes the net without going into it...

You have to work on the little things, just like real life. Otherwise, you can't beat that Chinese player ^^

PhoenixMateria

It takes practice... SDB is probably the most annoying game there is at first, because nothing seems to work ^^"

At first you shouldn't even worry about your opponent. Look at the shuttle, look at the shuttle's shadow, and try to make a shot. Then make various shots. Just get the hang of hitting consistently.

Sounds like coaching now that I re-read myself ^^"

Heh, but it wouldn't be a very good idea to look at the shuttles shadow as it comes towards you in real life :p.

Anyway, can you direct the shuttle in SDB? I can't figure it out... although I've got the timing of hits down ok now, I can hold a decent rally every now and then :D.

EDIT: Ah never mind I've got it now!

Are you holding the "hit" button down? Once you're in position behind the shuttle you need to hold down the button and the player will automatically hit it back. That's what had me confused anyway, I was just tapping the button as the shuttle came to me.

phaarix,

You direct the shuttle by pressing either the 'up' or 'down' arrow keys as you make your shot, corresponding to your character's left and right respectively.

You can also change the angle with 'forward' for a steeper angle and 'back' for a less steep one.

For example, if you get in position at some distance behind the shuttle, jump, and press forward+up as you make your shot, you'll smash to the line on your left side.

The one I can't figure out is pressing 'back' and 'forward' to smash to the other line... ^^"

Oh, and don't always hold the button down. Depending on how long you hold it, you can do different shots. You either tap it right or hold it very shortly for a drop shot.

Thanks, I've got the controls down pretty well now, just need to practice :D! I have been able to beat the Canadian and American players so far. Had a look at the China player though and he's crazy! I managed to get one point heh. Though I think I got lucky. The game is a lot better than I thought at first sight, I never really gave it a go until now and I've gotta say it's pretty cool. Especially considering it's on the ancient NES. Are you able to beat the Chinese player?

Yeah, an up to date Badminton game would be really cool. Have you played Virtua Tennis? Now if we could get a "Virtua Badminton" of the same sort of quality I could imagine that would be an incredibly fun game. If a NES Badminton game can be this fun, then why haven't we had a single (proper) Badminton game since? If a country like China really got into the game development industry then I'm sure we would...

PhoenixMateria
10-27-2006, 10:03 AM
Yeah, I can beat the Chinese, but the games are pretty close. You just can't be afraid of his smashes is all. Oh, and heap up the pressure, continuously.

That and you have to be really consistent, since it's either you attack like LD when there's the slightest opening and smash the shuttle on a line at the other side of the court from him, or make less mistakes than the computer.

I can beat the Chinese doubles on my own, just switching characters on serve. Try it sometime, it's easier than singles. Weird

As a side note, phaarix, you said the game is much better than at first sight once you start playing correctly. Isn't that like badminton itself? :p

Haha, yes indeed :D! Living in New Zealand I was brought up with the impression that Badminton was sort of a "sissy's" sport and I played Tennis till the age of about 11 which was when I started to play Badminton and liked it so much I gave up Tennis to focus on it :). That's the problem... Badminton is always a sissy's sport until you see a 200 km/h smash  and make your first perfect baseline to baseline clear.

People have that image and that's why badminton isn't popular. It's not about media coverage or anything like. We have to teach them what badminton really is, that's all.

Speaking of which, the music in SDB isn't the best, hm? ^^"

Lol! No it probably gives the complete opposite impression of what Badminton's about! I think that's one of the things that put me off the game originally... heard the music and immediately got the impression that the game had nothing in common with the actual sport :p.

This image though... it's quite annoying really. I took my racquet to school about a month ago. I was asked by one of my "friends" if I played Tennis or Squash >_>. I told them no I played Badminton. They then said something along the lines of "Oh my god you actually play Badminton? That's a gay sport".

Thing is a couple of weeks later after seeing me play Badminton during lunchtime their idea of Badminton had completely changed and they now see Badminton for what it really is - a fast, serious, and competitive sport. Yet somehow before even seeing it they still managed to form the idea that Badminton was a "gay sport".

By the way, are you programming in Java? I don't know what language creates a swf file, I'm not too good with flash.

the game where u played with cone ppl who swiped at the shuttle was sooo frustrating! i think i dont have the patience for it, tho i was impressed with my opponents smash and like real life mine was misjudged an useless lol:eek: ha, but the other one playing with the super jumpsmashing lil ppl was terrific!
i think it was really funny reading everyones tips on beating the computer, ha i would never have imagined that we could be giving each other tips that were helping us beat non existant opponents! long live real badminton though!

It sure is hard...

I only just gave that cone game a proper go. You really do have to spend a fair while getting used to it. I lost my first game 21-0 lol. But after 20-30 mins of playing I finally won my first game 21-16 :D. You have to be clever with your shots and actually push him (the cone) around the court to win. It's surprisingly realistic for such a simple looking game!

It's quite easy once you get his style of playing. He gets quite predictable :)

I think the best I got was 21-3... still, it's quite fun to continue playing...

The only thing I fear is his smash, which comes by so quickly and surprisingly

Could someone please send the game to me? I'm not lazy but it seems that you need some sort of username and password to log in and play the first aforementioned badminton flash game. Thanks ^^ jasonyoung1993@gmail.com. You'd probably want to copy and paste since most people forget the gmail thingy. Also if you're copying and pasting, watch out for the period ;). Just some words of advice. Btw, my first tournament's tomorrow for those of you that've read my thread.

I click on the link, and it pops up an window where im going to enter username and password. But I cant enter the site:crying:

At first it seems impossible but it does take practice! Eventually you start to discover patterns in how the opponent plays and it gets a bit easier then.

matchbow
04-06-2007, 09:40 AM
I've beaten it 21-11 and 21-16. the computer doesn't smash enough.

I think it's good that you can never tell what move your opponent will play. it makes you get ready for everything. and after you get some practise to get used to it, you'll be missing way fewer shots. it's just, you can pretty much never do a netshot directly to the computer, or else he'll kill it

Tsumaranai
04-06-2007, 11:17 AM
I think it smashes plenty. I can never retrieve them. Haha. Well, it'd be cool if they could extend the game, and give different levels of computer opponents and make it multiplayer. I find it too difficult and uniform. It also seems like you have to be too close to the net to get the drop shots, and those rackets are looong.

In the badminton game with cone ppl, a crosscourt dropshot can be just as effective as a smash...

Well if you want cheap points when it's your serve, you can try doing a low serve, then immediately go to the net and follow up with a smash shot. He'll kill the ball and you'll counter kill for the win :D

Mmm I started beating the flash cone game awhile ago but today I decided to play again and I found that after you hit a bad drop, you can actually return the computer's net kills. I also found that you could net kill the net kills! if you time it right.

I played two games and on the 2nd one I net killed the net kill twice and lifted it twice. pretty cool although I've never seen anyone net kill a net kill before... at most get a lucky block... but lift returns happen quite a bit more regularly in real life.

Here's the latest badminton game. For those who didn't enjoy the first version because of the difficulty, there is now an easier v2 released. http://www.badminton-information.com/online-badminton-game.html

I find that the first one is more fun, since it's more challenging. My best score on that version is 21-1, though. I've become pretty good at it. I'd have to say the sound effects for the second version are even more odd. They sound more like the result of tennis strokes than badminton. There is no multiplayer option; hopefully the third version that's in the works will incorporate such capability. I don't like the faint peachy color in the audience, as the shuttle gets sort of camouflaged. Anyway, since no one noticed or posted yet about it..

Side notes: You can walk out of the singles court boundaries on the left, but not the right. o.0 Also, the court seems larger, so it's a little more difficult to get to drops. Smashes could definitely be tuned to be more retrievable. Sorry, some few last things. I'm kind of reviewing as I play. Movement is noticeably quicker and you can finally score points from clears. Also, it'd be kind of embarrassing if everyone already knew about it, and I'm just rambling. If you did, don't tell me; I look like a fool already.

It's actually a little too easy to score from clears, I think. Also, I think the net play has improved so that it isn't so easy to kill every low return after a low serve anymore. It seems that the reason why the games are still so uneven (I keep winning and the opponent gets less than 10 points) is because of the clears. The opponent should be able to return them much more often.
