My tips here: Men's Singles

LD to beat Hafiz (Good Game)

Gade to beat Chen Hong (Won't make same mistake twice after World)

Taufik to beat Susilo (Taufik getting better slowly)

LCW to beat Bonsak (Should be a walk in the park for LCW)

Men's Doubles: Go Denmark & England but I dare say that it'll take some mean feat to beat the Chinese pair after watching their display at the Worlds, unbelievable pair. Chandra/Tony may be the only ones to come close to them!!

Differing from your viewpoint a bit.....LD, CH, Taufik, LCW, KKK/BH (Malaysian doubles), and the Chinese pair. CH is getting hot again. KKK/BH is going to beat the Danes (I am very sure on this).

Wow! Great MS matches today, but even better matches tomorrow in the semis. With LD, TH, LCW and PG, who I believe are the 4 best MS players today, I think this is one of the best if not the best QF and SF rounds this year.
Too bad there will be no live TV broadcast of the QF here in the Philippines. Can't wait till tom so I can watch the SF.

I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised that former Japan Open Champion, Ronald Susilo, has reached the QF although his imminent meeting with Taufik will be strongly in the latter's favour. If Ronald can put up a good fight and even win a game, this will be a great boost to his return to international badminton after his disastrous Achilles tendon injury.

Ronald had an easy R2 match against Naoki Kawamae (JPN) 21-12, 21-12 after having received a bye in R1. But he was severely tested in R3 against another Japanese, Sho Sasaki, before triumphing 21-11, 14-21, 21-14.

Sasaki had earlier shocked 9th seed, Dicky Palyama (NED) 21-17, 21-9 in R1 before he eliminated compatroit Kenichi Tago (was he the recently crowned Asian Junior champion?) 21-17, 21-17 in R2.

I think Ronald's head-to-head contest against Taufik Hidayat is not good but he is the only Singaporean to have survived this far, all the other of his teammates have been eliminated in this Japan Open.

However, in the WS, Xing Aiying derserves mention as she beat WR28 Soratja Chansrisukot of Thailand in three games, 21-18, 17-21, 21-9. (Naturally fellow BFer, Georgina must be terribly disappointed that her Thai friend had lost after scalping the famous Kaneko Yonekura 21-18, 21-19 in R1.)

Aiying put up a spirited fight against No.1 seed, the great Zhang Ning in R3 before losing 15-21, 12-21. She has improved on her previous performance against the evergreen Zhang, but obviously she still has a long way to go.

On the other hand, Li Li, who is Aiying's 'elder and more experienced sister' in the Singapore team, was unable to defeat fellow Commonwealth competitor, Susan Hughes of Scotland, in R2 and went down meekly in the rubber, 12-21, 21-18, 13-21.

So now all Singapore hopes are on Ronald Susilo to perform the almost impossible task of ousting Taufik Hidayat in the QF. Maybe the fact that Ronald was once the Japan Open champ can motivate and inspire him to create magic. As the underdog, Ronald has nothing to lose.

The MS semi-final lineup could never be better, IMHO. The biggest guns from China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Denmark. It is hard to make predictions (as opposed to the quarters) as their level are almost equal. Only Taufik's fitness may be a bit suspect.

Don't give up hopes on PG yet as we all know that Dannish players usually play into their 30s, and sometimes even into their late 30s. I mean look at Poul-Erik Hoylsen(???), he won the Olympic title at the age of 36 I believe.

I believe PEH was just above 30 when he won the Olympics gold, maybe 31 but not as old as 36. Their current doubles pair of Jens Erikson and Lungaard may be around 36 or older.

Yeah, nothing wrong with wanting your own countryman to win. As long as don't insult other players.

LCW looks thin. I think in arm-wrestling (or even WWE wrestling), Lin Dan will beat LCW. So Lin Dan is definitely stronger in that sense.

Flandy/Vita,cosmic! Extra-ordinary performance to beat 2x Olympic Champ, keep the spirit. MS division--> Last year Anaheim WC SF scene finally happen again in Tokyo. Time for LD being single-fighter to defeat PG and TH or LCW, no BCL and CH anymore in last 4, can he? With his title now WChamp plus WR#1 and Top-seeding in this tourney OMG so many pressures for him to step-up. All top 4 freeze their opponents with straight-set and they are in 'top-form' condition, really hard to predict who will take 2 place in finale??

I think they've been making movies only on the sports that are popular in the USA - with soccer as an exception because it's the most popular sport in the rest of the world (even the USA made one film on soccer recently - THE GAME OF THEIR LIVES, on the US team's [the team was only put together and trained for 10 days!] stunning 1-0 win over England at World Cup 1950.)

There was one film, as far as I know, on table tennis anyway - Japanese fantasy film PING PONG. China should make a film on badminton.

BTW, I'm a film critic, apart from being a badminton fan.

Good morning from Salt Lake City (Utah)...it's now 5am...yes...I am still having troubles sleeping through the night

A very good day for Team Pelatnas, esp in XD where Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir managed to overcome the first Chinese hurdle by beating the newly-formed Zheng Bo/Yu Yang in 3 tough sets 15-21, 21-14, 21-18 in 48 mins. Up next will be their nemenis, Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen, whom they have beaten in the previous meeting.

The more encouraging result comes from Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa, who scored an unexpected win over the 2-times Olympic champions Zhang Jun/Gao Ling in two close sets 21-19, 21-19. Once again, Richard Mainaky has to be credited for bringing Flandy in to partner Vita. This partnership should do well in the Asian Games in Doha. Their next opponent in the SF is the ever so dangerous Thai pair Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam. Now, can both INA pairs create an all-INA Final in XD?

Over at the men's singles, Taufik Hidayat continued to show the right motivation and wasted no time by beating Ronald Susilo 21-15, 21-11 in under half an hour. He will face Lee Chong Wei who once again has beaten Boonsak Ponsana (that's the nth time this year I believe) also quite comfortably 21-18, 21-14. It should be an interesting match and Taufik holds an edge because of his form this week!

There was no surprised in the MD as Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya beat the local pair without a fuss 21-16, 21-12. They will face the WC gold medallist Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun in a repeat of the HK Open match. Speed wise, Tony/Candra will definitely lose to the fastest pair in the world. They have to play strategically, esp with Tony against Cai Yun at the net.

The Malaysian scratch pairing of Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong should reach the Final after they have beaten their toughest hurdle so far in Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen in 3 exciting sets 21-18, 17-21, 21-14.

I still maintain my view that the only pairs who have a chance to BEAT the world champion if both pairs were to rely on fast attacking plays are the Malaysian pair featuring KKK and Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan. Yap Kim Hock and Rexy Mainaky will be delighted with the performance of KKK/TBH. It's a possibility that they will be paired for the long term because CCM is already 26 yo. KKK/TBH is definitely a pair for the future...young and very very promising indeed! However, KKK does still need to be more matured in his performance. He tends to lose it if things are not going right for him (eg: the WC semi-final match in mixed doubles).

I couldnt say much as i had nvr watch KKK/TBH played. KKK/CCM has very good defense esp CCM, which really loads of trouble to guys like CY/FHF. But perhaps KKK/TBH will give better offensive advantage to the combination.

Individual talent is one thing. Being able to combine well as a cohesive team is another. Combining well takes time for the partners to play as one. Unfortunately KKK and TBH can't be said to have played together for a longer period than Cai and Fu, who have attained such a high level of understanding, almost telepathic.

KKK and CCM have been Malaysia's regular top pair for quite some time now, yet they find Cai and Fu hard to beat. So one can't expect too much from KKK and his new partner, TBH. With luck, they may eventually reach the final but it will be very difficult to snatch away a win from a seasoned pair like Cai and Fu, who have been playing much better lately. Of course, if KKK and TBH prove to be a good combination and are allowed to continue playing together, then with time they could be deadly. :p
